Grade 7-9 Loot Boxes and Likes: Navigating Today’s Online WorldGames like Genshin Impact, Roblox, and League of Legends are free to play, yet they still earn billions of dollars every year. In this course, developed for students placing into our critical thinking program, students will take a closer look at how gaming companies reap these megaprofits by keeping millions of young users constantly engaged through pulls, pity systems, skins, and other microtransactions. To strengthen their analytical skills, students will read excerpts from published research and articles on mobile gaming and investigate Capstone-created case studies. Students will evaluate their own gaming habits as well as those of their peers and then debate whether they are informed users or simply being used. This will lead to a wider examination of how social media companies employ similar practices to keep us hooked to their platforms. Grades 7-9 - Beyond Being Right: Elevating Our Debates with Impacts and ValuesYoung debaters rightfully devote much of their energy to crafting their arguments with proper use of evidence and reasoning. However, many are surprised to discover that “being right” is not enough to win a debate. This course will provide experienced and inexperienced students alike with an intensive look into the skill of identifying and analyzing the impacts and values implicated by their arguments. Who will be affected by your proposal? Why is it morally right? Why should we care in the first place? Students will answer these questions as they debate over a mixture of fun and engaging topics drawn from both fiction and real life.
