“ Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing
up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundred-
fold.” Mark 4: 8
Dearest Sisters and Brothers in Christ, hope and grace and
peace be with you.
The weather has finally turned so now we turn our focus
toward doing some gardening. I can not speak for all of you but
as for me I find great joy while working the soil whether it be a
small raised bed or large acreage it just feels good to me. The
soil is prepared, the seeds sown or maybe a plant transplanted
as our growing season is rather short, things are watered and
with great hope, we anticipate a fantastic harvest that might be
shared with others. Not everything planted is for eating though
as flowers of all varieties add a splash of color everywhere as
well as attracting those insect pollinators that we need. Yes, I
think it might be safe to say the growing season is upon us. The
natural world also preparing to grow and show off its splendor.
As I mentioned it is the growing season, not only in the
physical world but also in our spiritual realm. Throughout these
growing days we will continue to be bombarded by the
craziness of this world. Our willingness to endure these things
will be tested so just like our gardens we will need to tend our
health both physical and mental so that we might grow and
flourish in Christ Jesus our Lord. We need to build on the
foundations that have been established within us. We will need
to feed ourselves with God’s Word and actively work to remove
that which tries to separate us from the love of God. With daily
care our roots will reach deep drawing all that we need for life
making us stronger and stronger. Together we will blossom and
begin to set fruit, fruit that we might see an abundant harvest
down the road.
My hope is that we all get some rest and pleasure in these
coming days. That our work will give us great joy as we labor
toward the harvest. That we trust in our Creator to nourish and
tend to us that we might give praise and glory to the Father,
Son and Holy Spirit. May your joy be complete in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Shalom,
Michael
Lifting Up to God in Prayer
•For our congregations in transition. We pray that God
raise up and prepare pastoral leaders who will be blessed
and be a blessing in each situation.
•For those who are awaiting a vaccine for Covid. May the
supply meet the demand all across the world.
•For peace and a way forward in Palestine and Israel
•For Bishop Emeritus Dale Skogman and former Synod
Vice President Pamela Long, both diagnosed with terminal
cancer. God grant comfort, the support of family and
friends, and that peace that only God in Christ Jesus can
give.
•Prayers of thanksgiving and gratitude for the Spirit that
gathered people across our Synod together in assembly.
We give thanks and praise for all that was accomplished,
discussed, experienced, and shared!
Check out www.prayfaithfully.org for a weekly Breath Prayer
and Daily Devotions and visit the Northern Great Lakes Synod
website: www.nglsynod.org.
We are supporting Habit for Humanity by
supplying a lunch for the work crew, now
Wednesday, July 28 for 20 workers. We
need help with preparing a lunch for the
workers. I will not know the location and
any worker’s food allergies until the week before. Donating a
bag of chips, juice boxes, fresh veggies and dip, yogurt cups,
fruit, etc. are just a few ways to help. Please call or e-mail me
if you can help with providing the lunch in any way for the
workers; 942-7492 or [email protected] and thank you!

We are planning on holding our
2021 Annual Bazaar and Quilt
Sale Saturday, November 20
while following the current CDC
recommendations at that time.
Our event is only possible with
lots of help! Please consider
joining us by crafting once a week this fall or by making
creations on your own for the bazaar. Our wreaths are a very
traditional, popular item and clipping branches before making
them is a fun and easy way to help while sharing fellowship and
fun with others! A beautiful quilt has once again been made
and donated by Connie Arnett Ritter for our raffle, and we are
grateful for your upcoming help selling those raffle tickets. We
are now looking for additional hand crafted items for the raffle
too. More information will be coming along and thank you for
considering to help in the many different ways.
Since there will be no Sunday School classes held in person due to the
corona virus, a teacher booklet and children
been given to each family for home lessons. Adult Forum will begin
the first Sunday of October, meeting after the Sunday worship
services. Protocol will be set prior to the their first meeting
concerning precautions to be used with the virus.
Congratulations to Becca Bahrman for
receiving her degree from the School of
Nursing at Northern Michigan University.
May God bless you as you continue in your
health care career and making a difference
in so many lives!
A big thank you to both Todd Barr for volunteer-
ing to plant and care for the flower beds this
summer season at Emanuel and to Roger Kimball
for his upkeep of both Emanuel and Haglund
cemeteries. We are grateful for you both and
your dedication to keeping our church grounds
and community beautiful!
Quilting at Toni Peterson’s is under-
way for this year! It is held at her
home, 214 Maple Grove Road on
Tuesdays beginning at 9:30 a.m. All
are invited to help make quilts for
Lutheran World Relief and we also tie some quilts for our annual
bazaar. We are always in need of supplies: sewing thread, and
clean/flat sheets for the backing of the quilt tops. Thank you for
supporting this outreach ministry.
….to all that helped with the annual high-
way clean-up and cemetery clean-ups!
Upon arrival with a crew to clean up the
Emanuel Cemetery, most fallen sticks had
already been removed! A BIG thank you to
those that did that, it made a shorter clean
-up with most time spent raking and spreading gravel and a few
leaves. Thanks to all (including the very young) that again
participated in being stewards of God’s creation!
Since we didn’t hold our annual bazaar last
November, the quilting group has many quilts
available for sale if you are in need of a
special gift or would like to purchase one for
yourself! Talk with Toni Peterson or the office if
you would like more information.
EXCITING NEWS! Thank you to the support of our congrega-
tion, friends and community for the last
three years, by attending many events;
holiday bazaars, soup & pie socials, the
Scandinavian Smorgasbord, rummage sales
and by donating to our GoFundMe
account, a community member Matching
Fund, supporting quilt raffles and many
other monetary donations, our new roof has been completely
paid. Thank you all we are truly blessed by everyone’s support!
2021 Worship Times at Emanuel Lutheran Church
March –June 9AM July-Oct 11AM Nov-Dec 9AM
Our Annual Congregation Meeting will
be held Sunday, June 27th
following worship. It will be held in
person in the fellowship hall with light
refreshments, socially distancing and
wearing masks. Copies of the Annual Report are on the table as
you enter the sanctuary and they can also be mailed to you, just
let the office know, 942-7245. Please bring your copy of the
Annual Report to the Annual Meeting.
Thank you to all that have been turning in
Econo receipts to support the World Hunger
Fund. We are hoping to submit them twice
a year beginning at the end of June for
Econo’s “We Share” 1% matching funds
program. If you would like to also help by
totaling up or grouping the receipts prior to
totaling, talk with Jolene to get the
information and methods used. We are also looking for a small
calculator with paper for adding up the receipts.
We are heading into high gear in preparation for summer camp, and we couldn't be more excited!!! There are a few things that we'd like to update you on...
End of Summer Worship Service ~After the overwhelming gratitude you showed for the Epiphany worship service, we have decided to offer another one to our association congregations and friends. The 30-40 minute service is intended for the weekend of August 14-15. It will be available to preview on our YouTube channel by Friday, August 13. It can also be sent via a direct link for those who wish to download it directly. The worship service will in-clude Bible readings from the lectionary texts, prayers, worship songs, and a sermon, all done camp-style, featuring summer campers and staff. The ser-vice will be a great way to celebrate what God has done through the summer camp ministry of Fortune Lake, while providing an opportunity to worship together, and maybe even giving your tech team a week off!
Camper Update ~ We are so excited for the long list of campers who are preparing to join us this summer! There is still limited room in Youth Camp (sorry... Vagabond programs are all full!), with additional availability in Intergenerational Camp and Staff Supported Rentals. Please encourage your congregation and community members to register soon. We have waiting lists for full programs in the event that some campers need to cancel unexpectedly.
Staffing Update ~ Our 2021 Summer Staff is shaping up to be a fantastic team! We are almost done hiring, but we have four more positions we'd like to fill: 2 male Cabin Leaders and 2 female Cabin Leaders. Please encourage the young adults in your community to consider joining us! Must be at least 18 years old and available June 13-July 30. No experience necessary, as we have a strong group of returning staff ready to pass on the torch.
Camper Fees and Camperships due by June 1 ~ Here's your gentle reminder that all camper payments are due to the Fortune Lake office by June 1, including camperships offered by congregations. Those who are not paid in full by that dates will forfeit their early bird discount. If you have any ques-tions, please reach out to Deborah at [email protected]
