WHO WE ARE Established in 1972, the Hawaii Food Industry Association (HFIA) is a nonprofit 501(c)6 trade association that actively promotes the interests of Hawaii’s food and beverage retailers and suppliers through government relations, advocacy, member education and industry and community relations. By joining HFIA, you become part of a broad network of food retailers, from independently owned neighborhood stores to large supermarket chains, manufacturers, national suppliers, whole- salers, brokers, distributors as well as many associate members involved with the food industry, including transportation, finan- cial institutions, media, services & repair, publishing, insurance and more. We are the voice of Hawaii’s Food and Beverage Industry PROGRAMS & SERVICES We are your government and industry liaisons. Lobbying activities at Hawaii’s State Legislature and County Councils are our primary purpose and responsibility. We proactively advocate for the interests of our industry and our members. To accomplish this, HFIA has a strong and active voice within government to represent your views and interests. All members are encouraged to participate in HFIA’s Government Relations Committee (GRC), which decides the industry’s positions on bills up at the state and county level. We also disseminate information on new and upcoming legislation and regulations to our members. Community Relations enhances the reputation of our industry by showing that we care. HFIA represents the industry’s position on controversial issues in the media so you don’t have to. HFIA promotes all of the positive things the industry does for the com- munity, and also makes a point to contribute locally. HFIA works closely with the Hawaii Foodbank. Fundraising for the Foodbank is an important component of our networking and social events and our Executive Director Lauren Zirbel sits on the Hawaii Foodbank board. The Rainbow Fever Scholarships for Athletes Program, managed by the UH Foundation under the name HFIA Foundation, is another HFIA signature community service pro- gram. The HFIA Foundation also offers scholarships to member company employees who wish to obtain a retail management certificate from an accredited school. The Hawaii Retail Grocer Mag- azine is the only comprehensive magazine for the Hawaii Retail Food and Beverage Industry. Our magazine provides in depth coverage on issues that matter most to food industry businesses. The magazine also offers target- ed promotion of your company to fellow leaders and decision makers in Hawaii’s food industry. Member news and updates are covered free of charge and we offer advertising space to mem- bers at highly competitive rates. The Made In Hawaii Festival is the premiere exhibit show of Hawaii-made products. The Festival attracts over 40,000 visitors each year, and sales for participating exhibitors are estimated at over $10 million, including residual sales annually. The show is produced by HFIA, the 2021 Festival is Presented by Mahi Pono and the Central Pacific Bank Foundation. MORE MEMBER BENEFITS New Member Promotions. Networking through HFIA’s Annual Convention, Social and Golf events helps you build relationships with the people you do business with! These events promote camaraderie among members, while generating income to support HFIA’s educational and advocacy activities. Our events draw Hawaii’s top retailers and suppliers and provide attendees with ideal opportunities to share insights and build relationships. HFIA also hosts educational and social events where you can build relationships with your elected representatives.

HFIA Weekly Update email newsletters provide you with targeted local and industry specifi c business news. They also feature information on events, links to resources, and updates on legislation and regulations. Members can also share updates like new locations, new products, promotions, acquisitions, changes in leadership, or any other information you want to provide your fellow HFIA members.

HFIA actively contributes to member education.The HFIA Foundation off ers all member companies 50% tuition reimbursement for employees attaining a Retail Management Certifi cate. This specialized program was developed by the industry for the industry. In addition, all of HFIA’s membership meetings contain an educational component and are a great way for HFIA members to stay up to speed on industry news, trends, and information.

Meetings provide updates and exchange of ideas, problems, challenges, and new programs. Meetings include Board and General Meetings, and our Annual Convention, where members elect Directors, and receive the Annual Report.

It is our intention to allow grocers and food industry businesses of all sizes access to the full range of membership benefits, while providing a cap in dues for all members.

Note: 20% of membership dues are not tax deductible.

90% of HFIA Retailer and Supplier Membership Dues are tax deductible as a normal business expense. The remaining 10% is earmarked for lobbying and is not tax deductible under the IRC. If your company has a policy prohibiting any lobbying expenses, please advise us and we will not include any of your membership dues in the HFIA lobbying budget.
