TIGERS2021 SCHEDULE

Aug. 20 MidtownAug. 27 at WhitewaterSept. 3 at McIntoshSept. 10 MorrowSept. 17 at HamptonOct. 1 North ClaytonOct. 8 at McDonoughOct. 15 RiverdaleOct. 21 at Mt. ZionOct. 29 Luella

The Fayette County Tigers are entering the season after one of their most successful years in recent memory. In 2020, the Tigers went 7-3 overall, losing just one game against region opponents and hosting a playoff game for the first time in many years. Fayette went out with a bang, losing a 41-35 shootout to North Oconee in round one.

Led by coach Nick Davis, Fayette is facing a different challenge: fighting complacency. Coach Davis made it clear that the team has a different group of players this year, as many leaders of the past have graduated, stating that the young team will need to group together to repeat the success of last season.

“We can’t afford to go backward, we can’t afford to start over,” Davis said. “That’s what happens, you have success one year, and then you go back to a 2-9 or 1-8 season. It’s just like you started your whole program over.”

The Tigers face one of the most challenging tasks a high school team can: create a winning identity or fall back to a perpetual state of mediocrity. The team is confident that they will not underestimate their opponents and remain a threat across their region with their sights on a deep run in the playoffs for 2021.

OFFENSE Dustin Waters returns at quarterback after starting in multiple games as a junior. Waters took over last season when the team’s starting quarterback injured his knee. Inexperi-ence showed for Waters as he was tasked with a lot, something coach Davis says has made the quarterback a better player this year.

“He had a really good offseason. He’s actually having fun.” Davis said. “The game is really slowing down for him. Last year we put a bunch on his plate, and mentally, not that he couldn’t handle it, just that he was inexperienced, he wasn’t ready for it. I’m really excited to

see what he does this year.”At B-Back for the Tigers,

senior Michael Graham, junior Myles Howard, and senior Ca-naan Johnson will hold down running responsibilities.

Coach Davis touched on the athleticism of Johnson, noting that the team has lots of depth in the backfield.

“He had some big games last year late in the season. He’s a big back, so we expect a lot out of him.” Davis said.

At tailback, Fayette features sophomore Javon Graham and Brandon Moss, as well as Johnson. Coach Davis men-tioned the ability of Javon Gra-ham but noted that the player would need to grow into his role and trust in his abilities.

Wide receivers and two-way starters Keion Bryant and Kyle Butler return as the team’s top two pass-catching options. Sophomore Phoenix Moss will also play at wide receiv-er. At tight end, 6’3” Ryan Hannah-Brown will make his return to the team, as well as junior Desmond Waters.

DUSTIN WATERSKYLE BUTLER

Page 9: 2021 FOOTBALL Schedule

Fayette’s offensive line features just one senior in Jordan Bridges, who will return to the left tackle, with Jordan Jackson at the left guard position. Junior Jor-dan Darden will secure the other side of the line at right tackle, and junior Ayden Payne will anchor the line at center. Junior Chaz Milling will start at right guard on the line.

DEFENSE Fayette will base out of the 4-4 defensive set, allowing the team a level of flexibility while putting key players in position to make big-time plays.

The defensive line will be anchored by defensive ends Jordan Jackson and Car-los Wall. Coach Davis said both players have natural talent and possess the ability to pick up accolades as the season progresses.

“Jordan Jackson has a shot to be an all-region player. He played real well for us down the stretch last year.” Davis said. “Carlos Wall will be a rising sophomore, and we’re excited about his growth and potential,”

Canaan Johnson also seeing some playing time at the edge-rushing position. Seniors Jordan Bridges and Elijah Olive will work together as the interior of the

defensive line. Senior Donald Godfrey and junior Brandon Moss maintain the in-terior positions at linebacker, while Desmond Waters and Keion Bryant, who will also slide up to weak safety depending on the situation, will handle the outside linebacker positions.

In the secondary, Dustin Waters and Nicholas Taylor make up the free safety position. Kyle Butler and Cameron Williams will take the starting roles at the cor-nerback position, with sophomore Marcus Collins also rotating in at the position.

SPECIAL TEAMS Fayette will have freshman Josh Hosmer punting the ball, with Nollie Brown also competing for the role. Kyle Butler, Keion Bryant, and Phoenix Moss will handle return duties for the team.

Long snapper and rising senior Matthew Wilson return sto the team. Coach Davis praised Wilson for his devotion to the game as well as the program.

“He loves Fayette County football,” Davis said. “He’s just one of those kids, from an athletic standpoint, who is a big kid and hasn’t really been able to get any time on the offensive line or defensive line, and he comes in every day and works hard. I mean, he loves Fayette County football.”

ANALYSIS Fayette County boasts an extensive roster, and despite not having as many seniors as previous seasons, they still have enough veterans to make an impact. Both sides of the ball will see familiar faces as many of the team’s best players start in multiple positions. For Fayette, the defense and special teams seem to be the areas that will need the most work. On the other hand, the offense features several talented players at running back and wideout. The only area of weakness on offense is the line, which will only have one returning senior.

Coach Davis did not mince words when addressing complacency, stating that it is vital for the team to start the season off with a winning record. “Now, because of what happened last year, on August 20 against Midtown, if you drop that game, everyone’s going to say, ‘Oh, it was a fluke, they

the old Fayette,’” Davis saidFayette opens up their season at home against Midtown, a team that they beat last year 20-14. A win in the opener would be huge for Fayette as it

would solidify the efforts of both the players and the coaching staff. Only time can tell, but the Fayette County Tigers seem primed for a season of success.

CHIEFS2021 SCHEDULE

Aug. 20 at LuellaAug. 27 HamptonSept. 3 Fayette CountySept. 10 at Upson-LeeSept. 23 at GriffinOct. 1 NorthsideOct. 8 WhitewaterOct. 15 at Harris CountyOct. 29 at Starr’s MillNov. 5 Northgate

The McIntosh football team heads into the 2021 football season looking to start fresh after a 2020 season that saw the team go winless through 10 games. COVID-19 regulations and precautions significantly impacted the campaign, as valuable time in the weight room and watching film was shifted to at-home workouts and Zoom meetings.

This season, the team was able to practice in full capacity and complete an entire summer program. Now, the Chiefs are looking to wipe the slate clean from last year and get back to a winning record.

A promising young roster will be the face of the program as just 10 seniors return to the team after a large class graduated last year.

Head coach Lee Belknap said the team is looking forward to turning the page and hopes it can stay that way.

“We’re hoping, just like everyone else, that we can stay away from masks and quaran-tines and just be normal and just focus on letting them be kids again.”

OFFENSE McIntosh will play in the Wing-T Pro, a variation of the popular style that will allow the quarterback to take snaps directly under center and from the gun.

The quarterback position has yet to be decided, with a two-way race between Sophomore Jayden Jackman and Junior Tate Morris.

“They’re both tremendous kids and work hard,” Belknap said of the two players. “We like both these kids. They have similar skill sets, and both can run it a little bit both can

throw it a little bit. I’ve al-ways believed in the old quote that a team is only as good as their backup quarterback, so obviously, one of them will fit that role, and that means we are in pretty good shape.”

Junior Omar Gonzalez will feature as the starting fullback, a position coach Belknap said was a big hole for the team after Ben Ander-son graduated last year. Senior Blake Hiley and Junior Mar-cus Malone will start for the team at the wingback position in a style offense that requires extreme diversity in skill.

“In our Wing-T, you gotta be able to run. You gotta be able to block, you gotta be able to block some more, and catch the play-action pass,” Belknap said.

The Chiefs like to run a more unconventional Wing-T because of the unique ability of 6’8” wideout Emeka Iloh, who also plays basketball for the school. Iloh is a two-sport athlete and will even see some playing time on the defensive side of the ball to create a “no-fly zone.”

MARCUS MALONE JRDEVON PATCHUS

Page 11: 2021 FOOTBALL Schedule

Another larger-than-life athlete will start on the Chief offense as 6’5” junior Theo Elwell will line up at the tight end position, giving the team another large target and durability in securing the edge rush.

Anchoring the offensive line is senior Nick Kallas, whose fiery competitive drive and ability to finish blocks will suit him well at the center position. At the guard position senior Josh Artiles and junior Grant McKenzie will be tasked with pulling, running, and plenty of athletic workload as the team’s fast-paced offense requires it. McKenzie will also see time on the defensive end of the ball. At tackle, Michael Figueroa-Bueno and Ian Fisher will secure the perimeter.

Coach Belknap joked that if the team cannot find a way to make the offense work with these types of players, the coaches’ “coaching cards” should be taken away. The level of optimism is high, and, with a healthy amount of talent, it will be up to the offense to start the year off with a bang.

DEFENSE Two-way starter Ian Fisher returns as a dominating force on the defen-sive line. Junior Lionel Liburd, senior Connor Price, sophomore Oche Iloh, and junior nose tackle Austin Tanner make up the rest of the defensive line.

Juniors Jake Gregory and Simon Lewis will start at linebacker, and senior Dev-on Patchus will start at middle linebacker. Coach Belknap had only good things to say about Patchus, mentioning that his strength in the locker room makes him a perfect fit for a middle linebacker.

“He’s a fabulous athlete and super strong in the weight room.”At safety, sophomore Rahtrez Barber, junior Andy Elwell, and senior Scott

Groome will lock down the passing game as a part of the team’s three-safety sec-ondary. Senior Armaan Jabrani and junior Marcus Malone will start at the corner-back positions for the Chiefs.

SPECIAL TEAMS Sophomore Arthur Richez will handle the team’s kicking and punting duties, and Connor Price will handle long-snapping chores. Armaan Jabra-ni and Marcus Malone are the lead options in the return game.

ANALYSIS Despite having a young nucleus on both sides of the ball, McIntosh wants to leave last season behind and bring back a winning tempo. The team is banking on a couple of promising yet inexperienced star players on offense, meaning there could be an adjustment period until they hit a rhythm. Defensively, the Chiefs will need solid play from two-way players to keep opposing offenses in check. The positive aspect of having a young core group of players is future potential. If McIntosh can accelerate the growth to this season, they can achieve a winning record.

PATRIOTS2021 SCHEDULE

Aug. 21 Northgate (at SMHS)Sept. 3 at NewnanSept. 10 Starr’s MillSept. 17 at WestminsterSept. 24 DouglassOct. 1 SalemOct. 15 at GACOct. 22 CarverOct. 29 at RedanNov. 5 Cedar Grove

Most people would like to forget the year 2020 and the height of the COVID-19 pan-demic. The Sandy Creek Patriots are no different. Despite managing to play six games, two of which resulted in victories, the program was either forced to forfeit the remaining four games of the season as COVID-19 rates increased at the school or saw the opposition do the same. The season was already handicapped due to the fact that the team held no summer program and missed out on valuable time training as well as growing as a group. Head coach Brett Garvin said it was miserable not to finish out the season but that he hopes the team learned from it.

This season, the Patriots will have to turn a corner and jump straight back into action despite having just four seniors on the squad. An entire summer program and much-need-ed time in the weight room should prove valuable for the team and help in their pursuit of finding their way back to the playoffs.

“This group right here works really hard,” Garvin said. “We’ve made great strides in the weight room, obviously since January to now, because they’ve had weight training every day, all spring, all summer. You can just watch kids move around on the field and tell they’ve been doing it. We didn’t get that eight-month hiatus where you weren’t doing anything. That really helped the kids. We have a long way to go, but we’re getting there.”

One thing is for sure in Tyrone: winning is what matters. Sandy Creek has a long and star-studded history. The likes of Calvin Johnson and Kedric Golston have made their way from the program to the NFL. However, the past is just that, in the past. If the Patriots want to get back to their winning ways, they’ll need a solid start to a year full of potential.

OFFENSE Junior Geimere La-timer will start at quarterback for the Patriots. Last season, Latimer started out as a wide receiver but had made the switch as the team needed someone to fill the role at the quarterback position.

“He’s really smart,” Garvin said of Latimer. “He understands the offense. He knows what he wants.”

Junior Dorian Graham returns to the backfield as the starter for the patriots. Graham started for the team last season and has only added to his repertoire. Gaining strength and size will help the starter bounce through tackles and get past defenders. The rest of the backfield features a rotating group of young talent that has yet to prove themselves. Freshman Mark Hill and transfer junior Malique Croom will add depth to the back-field and give Graham time to rest.

Miles Thornton, Rich VanZant, John Hopson, Kaleb Cost, and John Philips make up a rotating core group of wideouts. While the Patriots don’t have a traditional tight end, several of these players will fill in at tight end-like posi-tions from time to time.

DORIAN GRAHAMTRAVIS FRANKLIN

Page 13: 2021 FOOTBALL Schedule

Garvin touched on the ability of wideout Miles Thornton in particular. “He’s not gonna be the super-fast guy; he’s a bigger guy,” Garvin said. “He’s re-

ally smart and understands how to run routes. That’s about as important nowadays, with these complex offenses that people run, is knowing how to run the routes to get open. You end up being open a lot more than you probably should be just because you know how to run routes.”

The offensive line may be one of the Patriots’ most significant strengths as the team has plenty of size to secure the quarterback and create lanes in the running game.

Juniors Michael Muldrow, Jerall Joyner, Adam Buffkin, Sage Ford, and sopho-more Justin Moore make up the offensive line.

“Adam is the smallest one we got, and he’s 5’11 230 pounds,” Garvin said. “The other four are gonna average around 6’4” 285 pounds, so they’re big.”

DEFENSE The defensive line for Sandy Creek will be anchored by returning starter and junior Travis Franklin. Asaru Holloway and Jordan Cohen will end up starting, as well as freshman DaMarius Willabus-Payne.

At linebacker, juniors Marcellius Pulliam, Kenneth Thomas, and Joel Reid make up the defense’s interior. At outside linebacker, the team will feature many players, including Mathis Haygood, Jakob Gude, Charleston Davis, and Braylin Blackburn, who will all rotate in and out of the position.

The Patriots secondary consists of standout Kaleb Cost and Josh Walker with Ta-vis Franklin, who will play at safety. The rest of the secondary will be determined by committee, assessing who can make the jump once the season starts.

SPECIAL TEAMS Two-sport senior Dylan Appo takes over kicking responsibilities for the team. Apo plays goalkeeper for Sandy Creek’s soccer team, making him quite familiar with kicking a ball, even if this one is shaped a little bit differently.

Miles Robinson will handle long-snapping duties for the team. Josh Walker and Kaleb Cost will take most of the team’s return responsibili-ties with occasional rotation of other young players.

ANALYSIS Sandy Creek loves to win, and current circumstances have put a great hindrance on that ability. With a complete offseason, the team must learn to work together to regain the winning status. It won’t be easy for the Patriots as their team primarily consists of sophomores and juniors, but, like any team, it’s a matter of finding where players fit and utilizing them to the best of their abilities. The home opener takes place Aug. 21 against Northgate, a team the Patriots beat 28-14 in last season’s home opener. If everything works out for Coach Garvin and the team, they should improve from last year and find themselves in the playoff hunt.

STARR’S MILL

PANTHERS2021 SCHEDULE

Aug. 21 NewnanAug. 27 Mt. ZionSept. 3 Union GroveSept. 10 at Sandy CreekSept. 24 at Harris CountyOct. 1 NorghateOct. 15 at GriffinOct. 22 at WhitewaterOct. 29 McIntoshNov. 5 Northside

The Starr’s Mill Panthers have earned the right to get greedy. Winning five-straight region championships isn’t going to cut it anymore, they’re hungry to hoist the big trophy.

Most of the 2020 campaign was beautiful. After a season-opening overtime loss to Class 7A playoff team East Coweta, the Panthers reeled off nine-straight wins, including a 63-6 round one trouncing of Mundy’s Mill. It ended in round two with a disappointing 24-9 home loss to Coffee, a defeat that still stings.

They will kick off their 2021 campaign for the crown on August 21 as they host Class 7A Newnan to cap off the new Fayette-Coweta Kickoff Classic. It’s an ambitious opener, but the Panthers know if they want to be playing deep into the playoffs, they have to be battle-tested.

OFFENSE It starts under center with William Yarbrough returning at quarterback. He had his growing pains as a sophomore, and he’s ready to break out as a junior.

“Any time the man that touches the ball every time is back, that’s a good sign,” said Starr’s Mill coach Chad Phillips.

Yarbrough will be backed up by promising freshman Logan Inagawa. Andersen Cardoza is

slated to start at A-Back, with Greigh Joseph at B-Back and Brandon Mathis running the Z. Jameson Inagawa is ca-pable of stepping in at all three spots.

Evan Slagel and Reese Nuscher lead the way at wide receiver.

All-purpose weapon Marc Stampley will also see key snaps on offense.

“We want him to touch the ball as much as possi-ble.”

Josh Phifer is a matchup problem for defenses at tight end, and he is backed up by Cole Manetti.

The development of the offensive will be key, as they will be plugging in a nearly all-new crew. William Thomas, Carson Andrew, and Micaiah Shaber can line up at tack-le, while Connor Ritchey, Colton Smith, and Nicho-las Carbuccia battle it out at guard. Adam Sands will anchor the line at center. WILLIAM YARBROUGHGREIGH JOSEPH

Page 15: 2021 FOOTBALL Schedule

DEFENSE Starr’s Mill has a brick wall up front. Yale commit Micaiah Shaber and massive Darrien Doster anchor the interior, with Barrett Schmidlkofer and Tyler Glover crashing off the edge. Andre Laurent and freshman Jared Moore offer enticing depth.

The linebacking corp is still coming into focus with six talent-ed players duking it out for three starting spots. Ben Thompson, Dorsey Benefied, Christian McFall, Zach Stevenson, Colin Bar-tek, and Evan Bartek are all in the mix.

Will Clem, Nikita Jones, and Jeremiah Stuart are the top con-tenders at cornerback.

Marc Stampley patrols the deep secondary at one safety spot, with Josh Thompson and Bo Walker slated for big roles.

SPECIAL TEAMS Talented sophomore Max Prozny has earned the coaches’ confidence with his ability to handle all kicking and punting chores for a team that expects excellence on special teams. Barrett Schmidlkofer and Austin Cummings will handle longsnapping.

Will Clem and Bo Walker team up with Marc Stampley in the return game.

“Will and Bo, it’s their job to catch the football. Stampley’s job is to take it to the house.”

ANALYSIS For Starr’s Mill, expectations start with a region championship at a minimum, and there’s no reason to think they will relinquish the crown after winning five in a row. Even playing against improved competition, the Panthers return veteran talent all over the field and have to be considered the favorite. The real question comes in the second season. If their offensive line gels and the promising linebacking corp rounds into shape, all the pieces are in place for the Panthers to still be playing deep into the postseason.

WILDCATS2021 SCHEDULE

Last year was a good start for the Wildcats, but they think they’ve just scratched the sur-face. Facing long odds as they introduced a new head coach and had to install a new offense with extremely limited interactions due to COVID-19, Whitewater limped out of the gate with a 1-4 start. They could have gotten down, but they got to work, bouncing back to finish the regular season winning 4 out of 5 games to return to the postseason.

This offseason was a bit more normal for Coach Chad Frazier and his staff, and it showed.

“It was nice this summer to bring them all together to participate in 7 on 7s and padded camps,” Frazier said. “I feel like we’ve progressed significantly from where we were a sum-mer ago. It helps having the same system in place and a lot of veteran guys coming back who are really good leaders.”

Whitewater qualified for the playoffs and pushed Woodward Academy in a round one loss. It was a little taste of success, and Frazier’s crew wants more.

“Getting them to work and getting them to compete, that part’s been kind of easy,” he said. “They do a great job of rallying and supporting each other. There’s a real hunger with-in our group to win and be successful.”

OFFENSE The Wildcats’ Wing T offense will be in the hands of lefty Austin Williams. The dual-threat QB got a good taste of action last year with two starts, but it’s all his show now, and he hasn’t shied away from the challenge.

“I’m excited about what he brings to the team, not only as an athlete but also his leader-ship and his character,” said Frazier, noting that Williams regularly joins him to talk Xs and Os and watch film during lunch. “His work ethic is top notch.”

Ty Ellington is his primary backup, with promising sophomore Camden Reese nipping at his heels.

All three backs return, with Braxton Mueller at A-Back, Dalton Bonner at B-Back, and Adeoluwa Erinle at Z. Xavier Clay-Turner, Hakeem King, Logan Griffith, and Nathan Wallace offer valuable depth.

Colin O’Brien, Boyton Cheney, and Jaylon McClendon lead the way at wide receiver, with Ty Ellington lining up in the slot. Braxton Mueller can also split out wide.

The top three tight ends gradu-ated, but the cupboard is far from bare. Will Snellings and TJ Hill lead the way, followed by Wyatt Carden and Remington Ponder.

The offensive line returns intact. John Raines is back to anchor the line at center, with Ethan Crawford and Jaxson Gier at guard. Ethan Boelsterli and Bryson Phipps return at tackle, but they are both facing a fierce challenge from Ty-ler Huttenloch. Jonathan Navakas and Blake Elsenpeter will see snaps at guard. DEFENSE The defensive line will be a big strength for the Wildcats. It’s a blend of veterans and youth, but they all boast a lot of game experience. Seniors TJ Hill and Remington Ponder roam the edges, with sophomore Jonathan Navakas and junior Stephen Johnson inside. Xavier Campbell and Ashton Brown offer depth on the outside, with Tyler Huttenloch and Jaxson Gier on the interior.

A trio of formidable juniors form the linebacking corp in strong side backer Will Snellings, middle man Blake Elsenpeter, and Raul Aguirre, a new player to the team making a lot of noise this offseason. Ty Ellington, Hakeem King, and Ethan Crawford will be the prominent backups.

Boyton Cheney and Ford Van Meter lock down the top corner spots, followed by Nate Sikes and Jacobean Brown.

Spencer Field is slotted in at free safety, with Dalton Bonner at strong safety. They will be backed up by Jaylon McClendon and Josh Benton.

SPECIAL TEAMS TJ Hartley has big shoes to fill as the Wild-cats’ new kicker and punter. Noah Smith handles long snapping duties.

Nathan Wallace, Dalton Bonner, Corey Richardson, and Josh Benton look like the top options in the return game.

ANALYSIS If the second half of 2020 is any indication, the Wildcats are on the rise under Coach Frazier. An unconven-tional offseason showed as they limped out of the gate in 2020, but they flashed their potential as the year wore on. A full year together should have them primed to hit the ground running in 2021. It’s a tough region, but the Cats look likely to make a return trip to the playoffs, and they hope to hang around the postseason for a bit this time.

Micaiah Shaber is setting himself up for success. A beast on the football field and a dedicated scholar in the classroom, Shaber, a mammoth offensive and defensive lineman for Starr’s Mill, spent much of the summer leading up to this senior season getting acquainted with the Ivy League. The confer-ence combines several of the country’s most prestigious academic institutions, and Shaber has his pick to continue his football career at nearly any one of them.

Something bigger than just the fanatical passion for football in the southeast is draw-ing him northward to the Ivy League.

“The appeal about playing football at an Ivy League school is the competitive level of football, as well as the world-class education. It doesn’t get a lot better than that for me,” he said. “Athletes in the Ivy League not only share a love for great football but have sig-nificant goals and dreams that brought them to these prestigious schools. I was struck by the centuries of history when walking through the campuses. The history of football itself began at these schools and evolved a fantastic culture and tradition.”

His hard work goes beyond football and school, too. He’s studied piano since age 5, and he’s also building new fencing at Mid-west Food Bank in his pursuit of the rank of Eagle Scout.

Micaiah’s Starr’s Mill coach Chad Phillips sums it up simply.

“He’s a great kid.”Not only has Shaber done everything

asked of him by his coaches, he always goes the extra mile. Over the winter, when the coaches work with middle schoolers, Micaiah is right there with them offering the kids hands-on lessons on how to lift weights properly and safely. Phillips thinks he could make a great coach one day.

“The kids gravitate to him,” Phillips said.Micaiah’s summer included camps at five

Ivy League stops, along with a non-camp visit to one more. It was a fruitful trip as he received offers to play at all six schools. Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, Co-lumbia, and Cornell are all eager to have him suiting up in their colors.

“For me, that was thoroughly surreal. It felt like every kid’s dream to be able to walk

through the locker rooms, try on the jerseys, and to be given private tours,” Micaiah said of his whirlwind tour. “The best part was working with great coaches and meeting their current players.”

The Ivy offers didn’t come overnight. They are the result of hours of blood, sweat, and tears earned away from the loud crowds and booming marching bands of Friday nights.

“Being an Ivy League football player means not only having a tenacious drive to push physical limits, but also having the academic discipline to excel in classes,” said his mother, Michelle Kalbeitzer. “There’s no doubt that genetics plays a part in Micaiah’s 6’6” frame and 80+” wingspan, but that’s not the most special part about Micaiah. It’s his drive to attend 6:30 a.m. agility classes at the gym before school, his dedication to getting a ninth lift session in before the week expires, and his willingness to take care of business on the academic front.”

The unique process has prompted Mi-chelle to launch a Facebook page, “Football Mama,” to share what she’s learning about the recruitment pathway. She aims to post

tips and host webinars to help other parents out with the recruit-ing process, contacting coaches, social media tips, and other bits she picked up through Micaiah’s recruiting process.

“This has been an amazing journey for us. I’m elated to watch my son’s hard work be validated by prestigious Ivy League football offers,” she said. “What an honor!”

Mom knows a village is helping shape her son into a well-rounded young man.

“It’s important that credit also goes to Micaiah’s phenomenal support system — piano teacher, Scout leaders, church members, football coaches, SMHS teach-ers, gym trainers — all con-tributing to Micaiah’s character development,” she said. “They all challenge him to strive for excellence.”

Coach Phillips is quick to point to Micaiah’s mom for being a positive role mode.

“His mom works her butt off to provide,” Phillips said. “She’s really sacrificed her whole life to put him in position to be highly successful.”

She’s set an example for her son to thrive, no matter the odds.

“He never had a chip on his shoulder, he just comes to work,” said Phillips.

Phillips is confident Shaber is just scratching the surface of his potential, not just at the collegiate level, but he has the tools and mentality to potentially reach the NFL some day.

“He’s put himself in a situation to be highly successful. He’s got to be hungry and go get it,” he said. “He can’t wait for someone to give it to him, he’s got to go take it.”

Whatever Micaiah Shaber sets his sights on in the future, you better believe he won’t stop working until he’s got it in his grasp.

The War Eagles are ready to take off with a new flight plan. Coming off a trying season, Land-mark Christian is turning the keys over to a new coach as they look to soar back to the top of the mountain in Class A. Tommy Lewis is the new man in charge, and he’s eager to get started. Lewis brings a wealth of experience, having played college ball at William & Mary and leading teams in three states with five state championships under his belt. Lewis jumped at the chance to be part of what he believes is a tremendous and nationally-known Christian school community. There’s build-ing to be done, but the path to success is a simple one. “There are two things we have to do each day, compete hard and honor the Lord,” said Lewis. “Everything else falls into place.”

OFFENSE The War Eagles will base out of a spread attack on offense. Whoever takes the first snap of the season remains to be seen, as there is a fierce three-way competition at quarterback between seniors Tyler Foley and Archie Burgess and sophomore Carson Baer.

The winner of the battle will be able to lean on running back Micah Lewis and fullback Cody Lee. There is also experience in the passing game with senior wideouts Caleb Nichols and Henry Joves IV and junior Tobias Lewis. Justin Hardy is set to line up at tight end.

The offensive line will be Alex Larsh, Oliver Gustafson, Evan Westling, Evan Pickett, and Micah Rogers.

DEFENSE On defense, Landmark will look to take advantage of their athleticism with a 3-4 base look. Seniors Isaac Cruver and Austin Swint team up with freshman Chase Story on the defensive line.

Brandon Montford, Grant Thigpen, Avery Hardeman, and Langston Robinson comprise the linebacking corp.

State triple jump champion Joshua Smith mans one corner, with Caleb Nichols on the opposite side. Henry Jones IV and Gideon Cruver man the deep secondary at safety.

SPECIAL TEAMS Freshman Jackson Bilotti is in line to handle kicking chores, with senior Josiah Burdette punting.

Stephen Tanner will handle long snapping. Caleb Nichols, Henry Jones IV, Tobias Lewis,

and Cody Lee figure into the mix returning kicks and punts.

The Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats are starting from scratch. With a new coach, a new team, and even a new way to play the game, Mercy is eager to build a foundation for success.

After sitting out 2020 during COVID-19, the Bobcats are back with a lot of changes. Shawn Cahill has been tasked with leading the team as they transition to playing 8-man football and rebrand to St. Mary’s Academy next year.

Cahill, who boasts an impressive resume that includes playing college ball at North Dakota State and most recently leading a Class 7A program in Georgia, is eager for a new challenge.

“When you’re a 7A coach, you’re not really a coach, you’re a CEO of a small company. It’s not a lot of fun,” Cahill said. “When this job opened up, I took a look at it and I thought there’s a chance to go to a smaller place and almost start up a program.”

It will be a small roster light on experience with just a handful of kids who have played before. “We’re starting fresh. That’s the approach we’re taking,” he said. “We’re teaching basic football.”Cahill is installing a power offense. “The bottom line is we’re going to run the football. That wins games, especially when you get later in the season.”Eric Doan has never played quarterback before, but he’s flashed the potential to lead the team. “Where he has come from in June to now, it’s been a huge difference,” said Cahill. “He’s one of those kids that you

love coaching because he wants to be successful.”Julian Moses and Joseph Nguyen will share the load at running back. Athletic and long Clarence Jusu lines up at

wide receiver, along with Tommy Nguyen, Hien Vu, and Zhakii Parris. Ashton Hennie-Roed will see snaps at tight end and fullback.

The three-man line will be anchored in the middle by massive Collins Nwabuibe. Michael Bui and Josh Ramirez are slotted to start at the guard spots, with Jordan Courtois and Carlo Lopez backing them up.

Josh Ramirez anchors the defensive line, using his 6’2” 260 pound frame to plug up the middle. The other offensive lineman fill in around him.

Ashton Hennie-Roed and Michael Bui line up at linebacker. Sam Hampton and Tommy Nguyen are set at corner-back, with Zhakii Parris in the mix. Eric Doan and Clarence Jusu lead the way at safety.

The experienced Ashton Hennie-Roed will handle kicking and punting. Collins Nwabuibe is learning to be the long snapper, and Clarence Jusu has emerged as their top option in the return game.
