Ishita Gupta 2020 GATE/Scholarship Winner

It is an honour ….. to be delivering my speech here tonight. My name is…. I am 12 years old. Next year, I will be attending Iona Presentation College. I …..the opportunity to speak tonight …...for my lovely parents, and... North Shore’s staff and teachers. To all the students here tonight, I congratulate .. accomplishments. It took determination, hard

work and motivation ….. where we are today. Now it is time to celebrate our achievements, .. challenges that await us. Without the skills imparted by North Shore, and support from my parents, I …... Duncraig Senior High school through GATE and receive a scholarship to IONA Presentation College. I started North Shore ... year 5. I have to admit, I was quite reluctant at first when …. had to go to a Saturday tutoring class. After all, what type of 11 years old would like ... their precious Saturday mornings, behind a …. tutoring class? Not me, that’s for sure. However, soon I started to notice improvements. My grades started becoming higher. I was not only pleased but shocked initially. This year, ... in the scholarship test for IONA. At first,…..private school, but luckily I got admitted. North Shore equipped me with the skills I needed for the test. The preparation had certainly worked. Attending North Shore has helped …..to receiving merit awards and scholarships. North Shore gave …. challenge myself, and to see if I can achieve things that I once thought ….. the test, North Shore had early classes to clear up any doubts about any concepts. Those classes ... helpful. North Shore provides ...my teachers and fellow students often push me, to not only achieve better scores, but become a better person. Once again, I would like to say thanks …...all the North Shore teachers who go beyond their duty …..effort to us. North Shore taught me to never give up, ……..to be many mountains we will have to climb. But one day, when we look back, we won’t believe how far we have come. Thank you

Rayan Jape 2020 GATE/Scholarship Winner

Good evening Mr Ng, Dr Law, my esteemed teachers, respected parents and fellow scholarship recipients. My name is Rayan Jape and today I would like to thank Northshore Coaching College and my teachers for this opportunity to share my experience with you.

I still remember when a few years ago, it felt like a struggle pulling myself out of bed every Saturday morning when mum and dad used to call out “Wake up Rayan, its time for Northshore.” Honestly, it was tricky to organize myself for the classes while managing co-curricular activities and of course homework! But as time passed, I started enjoying the challenge and this remarkably helped develop my critical thinking, problem solving and organizational skills. I learnt to enhance my performance under time-restricted challenges and handle the pressure better with the help of the time bound term ending tests. The holiday programs helped to consistently reflect on my skills and to make a plan for continuous improvement with the constructive feedback from my teachers. Discussion of different concepts and practice during the weekly sessions consistently helped build my interest and confidence in Maths, English and Creative Writing. These fundamental blocks will help me pave a strong foundation to expand my abilities further. Northshore taught me the importance of perspiration and perseverance. I conclude my speech today with this famous quote from former American Army General Colin Powell “A Dream Doesn’t become a Reality through Magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.’ So go on, achieve your dreams through Northshore!

Thank you.

Jasmine Wu

2020 GATE/Scholarship Winner

Good evening teachers, ...special guests. My name is Jasmine Wu. Thanks to North Shore I have been awarded scholarship offers from St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls, All Saint’s College and Perth Modern through GATE. I .. achieved the ICAS Medals for English and Spelling recently.I started North Shore in Year 2 …. enjoyed my learning journey since. The

teachers are exceptional and make every lesson interesting academically. I have made friends that …... by pushing each other up. North Shore has taught me so many valuable lessons and I am very grateful for all this knowledge that I have gained.

At the beginning….rocky. Spending three and a half hours studying at ‘Sunday School’ ….. very ideal to a six-year old at all. It was rather terrible to imagine getting dragged out of home on a Sunday afternoon. …..while, you get used to this ‘Sunday School’ …. actually start enjoying the learning journey ... accelerating through the progressive program. The most precious lessons I have gained from North Shore is learning how to embrace life’s many challenges and how to balance school studies, international music competitions and international level sports trainings. I am a WA Under 13 Girls state champion in table tennis and top 2 in the country, having represented Australia in the 2019 New Zealand National Open Championships, winning 3 gold medals, and in the upcoming Hopes Oceania Championships.Thank you, North Shore and all …. . taught me well. I would also like to thank …., Mrs Julianna Tse, for her excellent organization.Lastly, I ….Each of us has a journey; each person has a unique …... of us try to reach our various destinations. Along the way, there are hills and mountains …... climbing it you see another one in the horizon. A fulfilling life is …. as many of these challenges as we can along our diverse journeys.

Thank you.

Speech from Peng Sheng—2020 ATAR (99.80) Good evening guests, parents, staff and students

My name is Peng Sheng, a former student at North Shore Lynwood Campus. Life at North Shore began in Year 3, when I was met with the sudden reality of having to attend tutoring class every Saturday morning. Dragging myself out of bed at 7:30am on my first day, the only thought in my head was: “What did I do to deserve this?”. Following a very grumpy car ride with my mother, I was introduced to the wonderful Principal and staff, who showed me the way to class. It was nothing like school. The classroom was full of

bright, friendly children waiting in anticipation for class to start. The teacher was extremely patient, and would stop at any point in case we any questions to ask. It was in this learning atmosphere where I began to enjoy going to North Shore. And now, looking back, I realize it was because of one very important thing; it was challenging. There was no time when North Shore can be described as easy or boring. Every week I was learning something new, and my knowledge was being refined by the homework and other resources given to us. The teachers at North Shore made learning difficult concepts interesting with critical thinking problems, all the while engaging with the students. North Shore was even more important to me in Year 11 and Year 12, when I needed experience with lots of different questions and question types. I was provided with very well written booklets and other resources that really gave me an edge over others in tests and exams. The teachers were very supportive, and made sure to explain every concept clearly to the students. North Shore gave me educational support all the way from my first day, to the GATE exam preparation classes in Year 6 and finally to the WACE exams in Year 12. Not only has North Shore gifted me with academic ability, but also important life skills such as discipline, problem solving, time management, creative thinking and social skills. So now, I thank you, the amazing principals, teachers and staff of North Shore, for the countless hours of effort that you have put in for us students. I also thank my amazing parents for waking up early on Saturday mornings to drive me to and pick me up from North Shore, and providing support throughout my academic career. It was because of the assistance gifted to me by all of you involved in my learning journey that I was finally able to achieve an ATAR of 99.80 and receive a position in the Direct Pathway to Medicine at University of Western Australia. Congratulations to all the award winners, and I wish you well for your futures ahead.

Thank you

Jahin Anwar – 2020 ATAR (99.9)

Good evening guests, parents, staff and students.

My journey with North Shore began all the way back in 2013, when I was enrolled into my first ever class in Year 5 in Lynwood Campus. There, I was exposed to some of the hardest questions I had ever seen; Maths questions which legit seemed Year 12 level, English questions which seemed to be written by Shakespeare himself. But the worst was General Ability. General Ability. General, as in anyone could get them. So you should know how I felt when I was getting half of these questions wrong in the weekly homework

booklet, and the other half right only because of some good luck guessing of picking option C.

But as the years went by, my perspective on what North Shore meant changed. What I once thought of as torture, became insightful at times, even enjoyable. I learned from my general ability days that if pain is to hard work, then North Shore is to success. Being at North Shore, I have picked up a truckload of skills and knowledge, had the opportunity to be taught by some fantastic teachers and gained a whole group of friends. And that quote was enough to inspire me through the mess that is Year 12. North Shore gave me the chance to challenge myself and test the boundaries of my own skills and potential. With their efforts, my parents, teachers and my friends, I managed to receive an excellence award at the National Choosemaths Awards in 2018, win an ICAS Gold Medal in Mathematics just last year, be the DUX of my school, get a 99.90 ATAR and get accepted into Medicine at University of Western Australia with two prestigious scholarships. And yet, if you told the 12-year-old me who was struggling with general ability in Year 5 that I was going to do these things, I would have never believed you. To all those starting high school, if I could do this much with the help of North Shore, you can do it too. Work hard, make every opportunity count and always remain humble. Remember that the fruits of your labour, whether it be getting into a GATE school now or finally graduating high school at the end of Year 12, is not your efforts alone; but the combined efforts of your teachers, friends and parents. So remember to always thank them for the sacrifices they have put in for your success. With all that said, I would like to say what an honour it has been for me to address such an amazing group of children, and I would like to thank North Shore for organising such a remarkable event and all the support throughout the years. Congratulations, and I wish you all the best in the future.

Thank you.
