Welcome message

In the last few weeks, our lives have changed a lot, we were in school with our friends and suddenly, we were all asked to stay at home. At the moment, there is a lot of worry around because of Covid 19. Having some worry can be really good because it keeps us safe, but when we have lots of worry, it can make us feel bad and make it hard for us to manage our feelings. This is normal and you are not alone. If you are feeling worried or scared, you may find it helpful to try some of the activities in this newsletter.

I have included some information websites, tips and resources to help you support your child/children with their needs, learning and self-esteem. Children have varying needs and there is no one size approach fits all. It is quite common for children to have additional needs that span several areas, so select the resources that meet the needs of your child, without worrying too much about the label or category they fall under. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and these SEND strategies will be beneficial to many children, whether or not they have a diagnosis.

What zone are you in today?

When we are happy and relaxed, our body works fine, but when our brain thinks we are in danger, it sends messages all over our body. We get ready to run away from the danger, fight and be ready to meet the danger or freeze, which means we get stuck to the spot. This is a good thing when we want to hide!

seem less scary.

Autism

You might want to set a specific place for your child to do any work or tasks. At school they may have this in the form of a workstation to support their learning. Each child’s workstation may differ slightly, so you could ask your child to help you set one up that will suit them or that they are already used to.

Dyslexia

It is important to encourage children to recognise and pursue the areas in which they excel (do more of what they enjoy) and support them with the areas they find difficult.

Speech and Language

Play lots of games with your child to encourage social skills, such as taking turns and winning and losing.

Motor Coordination Disorder/Dyspraxia

Allow your child to use a word processer to complete some written tasks. If they can’t type, encourage them to learn, so that they are able to use a Word Processer with more speed and fluency.

ADHD

Give your child something to fiddle with whilst you are talking to them or when you want them to focus. It can also be helpful to let them move around whilst they listen.
