MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR It is with great pleasure I present you with the 2020 Waste and Sustainability Calendar. The artworks displayed in the calendar are diligently drawn by students from Cottesloe and North Cottesloe Primary Schools and are based around the theme of sustainable transport.
Many transport systems have significant impacts on the environment by consuming large quantities of energy and creating carbon emissions while burning fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal. There is an estimated 750 million cars being driven worldwide and some predictions say that in the next 40 to 50 years the number of cars will increase more than this rate. Most of them use fuel which is not sustainable.
Sustainable Transport, otherwise known as Green Transport relies on renewable energy and has a low impact on the environment. Social, environmental and climatic impacts are taken into consideration when classifying transport as sustainable.
Using public transportation like the bus or train is a great way to reduce the number of cars being driven, making it a more sustainable form of transport. Sometimes it is the simple but healthy options which are the most sustainable such as walking and riding your bike or scooter.
The themes within this calendar have been wonderfully portrayed by the students who provide tips and messages for travelling in a sustainable future. I hope you find the 2020 Waste and Sustainability Calendar inspiring, as well as providing useful information. Have a safe and happy year.

SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES IN COTTESLOEThe Town of Cottesloe is committed to new and ongoing sustainability and environmental initiatives and programs that help reduce our impact on the environment.
Coastal Monitoring The Town of Cottesloe has completed five years of coastal monitoring under the Coastal Adaptation and Protection (CAP) grant funding received from the Department of Transport. The program involves shoreline surveys twice per year and monitoring by remote camera units which take photos of three key sections of the coastline every hour during daylight. Comprehensive reports are collated by coastal engineer consultants and are available on the Town’s website. The coastal monitoring project aims to identify coastal hazards to assist with future planning and management of the foreshore area.
Natural Areas Management and Coastcare Last year the Town continued to restore the coastal dunes by removing introduced weed species and planting 10,000 native coastal species. These help create habitat corridors for wildlife as well as providing dune stability. Cottesloe Coastcare Association volunteers planted over 3,000 seedlings last winter and removed a significant amount of weeds by hand. They were also awarded the Community Group category at the Western Australian Coastal Awards for Excellence. This is a tremendous achievement and the Town continues to work in partnership with Cottesloe Coastcare Association on a number of projects.
Verge Street Tree PlantingVerge street tree planting continued in Cottesloe with an additional 150 trees planted in 2019. The Town aims to increase
the tree canopy within Cottesloe and benefits include improved aesthetics, lower urban traffic speeds and lower urban air temperatures. More trees will also help mitigate climate change through contributing to urban forests and will support native bird species whose natural habitats are diminishing through urban development.
Principal Shared Path (PSP) Greening MasterplanConstruction of the PSP bike path was completed in 2019. A Greening Masterplan was compiled and future works will include revegetation along the new path between Grant Street and Victoria Street. Native species will be sourced to help create a habitat corridor.
Waterwise Council Cottesloe is a Waterwise Council endorsed through Water Corporation and Department of Water’s Waterwise Councils program. The Town continues to investigate ways to reduce our water consumption and is aiming for Gold Endorsement through running many water initiative programs.
Native Waterwise Verge RebateThe Town offers a rebate of $15m2 with a maximum claim value of $500 to residents who are eligible as per conditions on the Application form found on the Town’s website. This initiative aims to reduce water use by converting grass to native waterwise vegetation and supports local biodiversity.
Garage Sale Trail Garage Sale Trail is a national event and encourages all Australians to take part by putting second hand first which helps promote sustainability. In 2019 a number of sales were held in Cottesloe.
The cover art was created by local Cottesloe artist Mike Nicholas runmouserun.com.au
