We specialise in delivering internationally recognised degrees in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, urban design, property and construction management.

Students joining our school benefit from our bigger- picture view of the world. Our curriculum focuses on the built environment as a whole, not just its individual components. We specialise in three particular streams of the discipline: architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design.

To become a practising architect, students must complete a minimum five years’ study: a three-year undergraduate degree in architectural design, followed by a two-year master degree.

The University of Adelaide is the only institution in South Australia to offer a double degree pathway at master level in architecture. Completing the double

master degree requires only one extra year of study, and qualifies students in two disciplines, thereby enhancing their career prospects.

Features of our schoolWe have invested in three industry professors. Each of whom is an award-winning professional in their own right. They bring a high degree of inspiration and reality to their teaching.

Our internship program provides master degree students with professional work placements with Australian or overseas businesses and professional practices.

Students have 24-hour access to our computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) studio and state-of-the-art model-making laboratory, one of the best equipped architectural design labs at any Australian university.

MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE BY COURSEWORK

The Master of Architecture degree provides specialist advanced design education for entry into the contemporary architectural profession. A sequence of core design studios, each with a distinct focus, encompassing material cultures, urban landscapes, and complex buildings, forms the heart of the program. Courses in professional practice, construction technologies, as well as history and theory studies supplement the studios.

Travelling studios and professional internships are provided as electives, while linkages to allied professions in the built environment, including landscape architecture, urban design and planning are embedded in the curriculum.

The degree culminates in a research-led final design project, conducted in small studio groups under close supervision by academic staff. This allows students to develop and explore their own distinctive interests and possible career directions.

MASTER OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

The growth of infrastructure and building projects is a significant driver of the economy—both in Australia and throughout the world. There is growing demand to ensure these projects are delivered on time, within budget, and at a high level of quality, to satisfy stakeholders. Graduates of this degree are well equipped, and fully qualified, to provide advice in these circumstances.

The degree is hosted by the School of Architecture and Built Environment. However, it also draws on business and project management expertise across the Faculty of the Professions to provide a holistic approach to the study of various aspects of construction management.

The Master of Landscape Architecture develops a deep understanding and appreciation of design’s significance and theoretical underpinnings, and the vital importance of a close relationship between the architecture and landscape architecture professions. Additionally, the interdisciplinary nature of landscape architecture practice is emphasised, through close contact and shared courses with architecture and urban design students.

Students are encouraged to develop their own position in relation to current disciplinary and socio-political concerns, rather than follow trends or dogma. We require that they consider expanded possibilities—rather than secure definitions— regarding what constitutes landscape architecture as an effective and affective contemporary practice.

MASTER OF PLANNING

Urban planning is concerned with how we lay out, regulate and manage the cities, neighbourhoods and places in which we live. With cities becoming larger and more complex all around the world, it is important we manage their growth to: provide a good quality of life for all residents; ensure employment opportunities; protect their natural and historic built heritage; and ensure their resilience to natural disasters and climate change. A planner’s overarching objective is ensuring our cities are both attractive places to live and work now, and sustainable into the future.

The Master of Planning provides a broad-based education in planning, covering urbanisation, policy, theory, practice and planning law. The urban development process is a central area for study.

High quality urban design is a very important aspect of city development as it creates the places we all experience.

Urban design focuses on the space between buildings, improving on the context the buildings provide to make spaces that are attractive, usable, safe, enhance community and draw people to them. Government policies must be negotiated with, and implemented through, diverse private-sector agents and a differentiated civil society. Managing environmental problems therefore entails a new set of approaches, including government, public-private partnerships, economic tools and incentives, democratic decentralisation and risk management.

The degree addresses how the signature environmental issues of our time are to be managed; now and into the future.

It is targeted at three distinct audiences:

• recent graduates seeking a career in environmental management

• mid-career professionals looking to update their knowledge in the fast-changing domain of environmental governance and management

For students fluent in both Chinese and English who seek a career as a professional interpreter and/or translator, this degree will provide you with skills and knowledge in cultural and social studies, cross-cultural communication and practical skills in interpreting and translation. The degree is endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to undertake the Certified Interpreter and Certified Translator tests conducted by NAATI.

This degree is for students fluent in both Chinese and English seeking a career as a professional interpreter and/or translator. It provides you with skills and knowledge in cultural and social studies, cross-cultural communication and practical skills in interpreting and translation. You will undertake either a 9 unit or 12 unit (extended) research dissertation. The 12 unit dissertation can lead to admission to a Doctor of Philosophy program. Develop a deeper understanding of the principles and practice of environmental policy, planning and governance. Responding effectively to environmental problems involves far more than the application of scientific knowledge, or the ‘top-down’ regulation of people and their environments.

Responding to contemporary environmental problems in the complex, multi-jurisdictional domain of environmental management, government policies must be negotiated with, and implemented through, diverse private sector agents and a differentiated civil society. Managing environmental problems therefore entails a new set of approaches, including government, public-private partnerships, economic tools and incentives, democratic decentralisation and risk management.

The program addresses how the key environmental issues of our time - global warming, water shortages, deforestation and the like, are to be managed now and into the future.

Students have the option of a research or coursework specialisation depending on their personal and professional goals. This degree has a major research component and high performing graduates may proceed to further research study. The Master of Computing and Innovation is a conversion degree for graduates from a broad range of disciplines who wish to develop new skills in information technology (IT), management and innovation.

Success as an IT professional in today’s diverse market requires strong technical knowledge, and expertise in innovation, communication and project management. The Master of Computing and Innovation is designed to provide these broad skills.

Students with no prior experience in computer science undertake a specialised introductory program in their first semester, designed to address fundamental IT requirements and familiarisation with the university environment. At completion of the introductory program, students will be skilled in the C++ programming language and have knowledge of fundamental data structures and computer systems.

The Master of Teaching (Middle and Secondary) provides a unique pathway to a rewarding career if you have already completed an approved undergraduate degree and wish to bring the deep discipline knowledge gained through that experience to a new role as a middle and secondary school teacher.

This degree can be studied in accelerated mode of 1.5 years and is for students who have already completed a degree who wish to become a middle and secondary school teacher (Years 7-12). This degree offers students the chance to specialise in cutting-edge technologies aligned to career pathways. It is suitable for engineering graduates who wish to pursue further studies, as well as experienced engineers who may be looking to update or extend their technical knowledge.

The Master of Engineering comprises a foundation year and an advanced studies year. The foundation year consists of a set of courses designed to ensure that students acquire a level of expertise in the relevant specialisation that will enable them to proceed with studies in the advanced year. The advanced year gives students the opportunity to study technical courses at an advanced level and the opportunity to engage in a research project.

Graduates of a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Adelaide, or another degree that is accredited under the Washington Accord, will be eligible to be considered for credit, allowing them to complete the master’s degree in less than two years, with a minimum of one year of full-time study. Students must maintain a high Grade Point Average (GPA) throughout their candidature.

Dual Master of Marine Engineering with ENSTA BretagneAs part of the marine engineering program, the University of Adelaide is offering a dual 1.5-year Master of Marine Engineering program at the University of Adelaide and ENSTA Bretagne in Brest, France. Students complete six months coursework on Naval Surface Ship Design at Ensta Bretagne, six months coursework on Submarine Design at the University of Adelaide, then complete a six-month industry-based internship research project in France, Australia or elsewhere.

The Master of Petroleum Engineering is designed for graduates of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or equivalent in a discipline other than petroleum engineering. The program is suited to students who wish to gain a petroleum engineering qualification and enter the upstream (exploration and production) part of the petroleum industry.

It is also aimed at petro-technical professionals already working in the upstream petroleum industry who wish to advance their technical careers in petroleum engineering by achieving a formal qualification.

A key feature of the petroleum engineering programs at the University of Adelaide is the modern curriculum, integrating core petroleum engineering with geosciences and management, leading to a skill set that meets the needs of industry and complements the way it operates.

In 2017, the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences entered an exciting new era in health education with the opening of the 14-floor, $246 million Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences (AHMS) building. The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry is designed to provide specialist dental training through clinical training and research, and offers dentists the chance to consolidate and extend their skills in the specialisation area of their choice.

This degree is a professional postgraduate training program, not a PhD degree. As such, throughout the three years of the degree, students work in the clinical area as members of the health care team. Clinical placements may be undertaken in both metropolitan and rural public and private health care settings.

The Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy provides a professional qualification for people who wish to become ethically aware, research-informed and clinically effective counsellors. The degree delivers a current theoretical foundation and the opportunity to develop practical skills through hands-on experiential learning. Surgeons who wish to have minimally invasive surgical techniques as an integral part of their career can gain the professional qualification required with the Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery. The degree enables surgeons to consolidate and improve their expertise, and combines an advanced theoretical understanding of minimally invasive surgical procedures with a thorough clinical grounding in laparoscopic surgery.

For experienced registered nurses with a solid foundation in an area of clinical practice, the Master of Nursing Science provides the opportunity to extend their career in leadership, research and management positions. The degree offers a comprehensive grounding in research methods and critical analysis and allows students to develop advanced skills in clinical inquiry, practice and leadership that are required in professional nursing.

This program includes the new Advanced Clinical Practice course. The Master of Science in Addiction Studies (International Programme in Addiction Studies) is a unique degree that provides the expert knowledge and skills required to make a difference in the field of addiction. It is well suited to professionals and recent graduates from a range of fields such as health, counselling, law enforcement, social work, science and policy, who wish to take their careers to the next level.

The degree is delivered entirely online by three of the world’s leading universities in addiction sciences: the University of Adelaide; Virginia Commonwealth University; and the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. At completion of the degree, students are recognised as graduates from each of these universities.

All aspects of addiction, including pharmacological, psychosocial and public health and policy approaches, are taught by world experts in these subject areas. The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) is a compulsory requirement to be admitted as a barrister and solicitor in South Australia. It provides practical legal training for law graduates.

To apply, you must have successfully completed a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), or met the criteria specified by admitting authorities in your state or territory. If you studied your LLB overseas you’ll need to have your qualifications accredited by the South Australian Board of Examiners before you can commence the GDLP. You can contact the Law Society of South Australia (www.lawsocietysa.asn.au) to discuss these requirements.

What will you do?The GDLP program is designed to be flexible around other requirements. You’ll choose between weekday, after-hours and weekend classes. There is also an accelerated pathway, which can be completed in 20 weeks. You will:

• complete five core courses

• select two electives aligned to your interests and career goals

• undertake five hours minimum of continuing professional development

• build real-world skills through 30 days (225 hours) of legal practice placement.

This innovative degree is offered jointly by the Adelaide Law School and the University of Mannheim’s Faculty of Law in Germany.

What will you do?Our Master of Comparative Laws is conducted entirely in English. However, if you’re proficient in German you may choose to study in that language at Mannheim. You will:

With a long and distinguished history dating back to 1883, the Elder Conservatorium is the oldest tertiary music school in Australia, and is widely respected as one of the country’s leading music institutions.

The Conservatorium recognises the significance of music to the cultural life of society. Through its postgraduate degrees, covering all professional areas of the music industry, it encourages the development of new parameters of artistic and scholarly endeavour that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice in the art of music.

Over the years, the Conservatorium has been a pioneer and a leader. It was one of the first institutions to offer degrees in performance and music composition and more recently, the first electronic music studio. The Elder Conservatorium also has one of Australia’s longest established and most vibrant Jazz programs and has established innovative partnerships with major cultural organisations including the State Opera, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Australian String Quartet and the Australian Ballet.

The Graduate Certificate in Music Teaching is designed to upgrade the knowledge, skills and understanding of in-service instrumental music teachers to be eligible to apply for Special Authority for an Unregistered Person to Teach from the Teachers’ Registration Board of SA.

This qualification was developed in conjunction with and at the request of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD). The program is designed for those instrumental music teachers who either do not have any teaching qualifications or who have attained a Diploma in Music or an equivalent.

Participants will develop and assimilate effective methodologies in individual and group teaching, investigate and respond to legal and professional issues associated with music teaching, consider and incorporate the principles and processes of music education in their lessons and hone their ability to strategise and communicate in unfolding teaching situations.

This program is only offered on a part-time basis, usually over one year.

Career opportunitiesThis degree is designed for instrumental/vocal teachers already practising in schools who are not currently eligible to apply for Special Authority for an Unregistered Person to Teach category with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. This is a three-year postgraduate (master by coursework, extended) degree in clinical veterinary science that aims to complete the veterinary training of Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) and allow registration of the graduate as a veterinarian.

The first two years of the degree aim to develop the scientific and technical skills needed to become a veterinarian, and are focused on professional development. The final year is made up of a total of six three-week clinical rotations to consolidate scientific knowledge and technical skills prior to entering practice.

There is also a requirement for a further 23 weeks of extramural practical work during the degree that must be completed.

Career opportunitiesGraduates of this degree are eligible for registration as veterinarians in all states and territories in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The viticulture and wine education degrees have an international reputation for excellence. The Waite campus houses state-of-the-art facilities, including its own vineyard and the Hickinbotham Roseworthy Wine Sciences Laboratory.

This degree incorporates courses in both viticulture and oenology, and qualifies graduates to work as either a viticulturist, oenologist (winemaker) or in related professions (e.g. hospitality and tourism, and the food and beverage industry).

The viticulturist typically works closely with the winemaker to achieve the desired winemaking outcome. The winemaker utilises their training in the science of winemaking (oenology) to process grapes for the production of white, red still and sparkling, and fortified wines.

Throughout the degree, there is an emphasis on the key technical methods and sensory (wine tasting) skills required for a career in viticulture and oenology. The Waite campus is home to 70% of Australia’s wine research and boasts more than 150 university researchers and co-located partners in wine and grape science, providing a stimulating and unique environment for training, exposing candidates to the latest technologies and enabling them to learn from leaders in their field.
