Choose from over 50 single degree programs across our seven academic colleges. Focus on a specific subject area or select a combination of subject areas to explore.

Single degrees generally take between three and four years of full-time study to complete, and allow you to focus on a structured discipline or experience a broad range of subjects.

If you have a career in mind and know what you want to study, choose a structured degree like a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or a Bachelor of Health Science.

If you want flexibility to study a range of subjects within a discipline, choose something like the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.

Want to focus your studies?

Design your own Flexible Double Degree by choosing from over 750 possible degree combinations.

Satisfy your intellectual curiosity and tailor your studies to prepare for your dream career.

> Graduate with two qualifications.

> You’ll have a clear advantage when applying for jobs.

> It takes less time than studying two undergraduate degrees separately.

> You’ll have the same full-time workload as a student studying a single undergraduate degree.

What can you combine:

> any two degrees within the Arts, Social Sciences, Business or Science group

> a Bachelor of Laws with another degree within the Law group

> a Bachelor of Engineering, Advanced Computing or Software Engineering with another degree within the Engineering and Advanced Computing group.

Jharna ChamlagaiBhutanBachelor of Law/Bachelor of Science

The first-year science/law student, who left her birth country of Bhutan as a refugee, says:

"I had this feeling in the back of my mind that if I did law, I might have to give up on my love for science, so finding out about this double degree at ANU was amazing. Now I’d like to find a career where I can help people."

Her interest in science and the human body, she says, was fueled by a kidney disorder and her personal research into the condition. And her interest in law developed as a result of her parents’ background.

Delve into your interests while developing the systematic research skills needed for problem-solving, discovery and innovation.

U N D E R G R A D U A T E R E S E A R C H D E G R E E S

Undergraduate Research Degrees are challenging study programs that give you opportunities for intensive one-on-one guidance from world-leading academics, exclusive placements in research organisations, travel and teamwork.

> You will have the same full-time workload as a student studying a single undergraduate degree.

> You will graduate with skills that are in global demand across government, non-government and not-for-profit, business, consultancy and academic sectors.

Skills to get you aheadThe employment landscape is always changing, especially as technology becomes increasingly sophisticated and prevalent in the workplace.

Traditional jobs are disappearing or changing, while new jobs are emerging in response to contemporary needs.

By choosing to undertake an Undergraduate Research Degree you will develop timeless and highly transferable skills that work across disciplines. In particular, you will develop high-order problem-solving skills that employers are demanding the world over.

These skills will let you work in and across any industry which means that when you graduate, you will be uniquely placed to direct the course of your career.

Marika NiihoriCairns, AustraliaBachelor of Philosophy (Honours) (PhB) - Science

"Imagine attending a university situated at the capital of Australia, the heart of global research, and ranked number 24 in the world! To this day I have trouble believing this but I’m proud to call it my university. I study a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) in Science and it has been the best decision I have ever made in my life. Moving from Cairns to Canberra, and living off campus was a very daunting idea. However, through the non-residential college Griffin Hall and my small PhB cohort I have been able to make many friends which allowed me to transition smoothly into university life.

Through PhB I have already undertaken a research project in physics with leading researchers that has opened doors. My other major concern was whether I’d find the opportunities to balance out my studies with extracurricular activities. Never fear as ANU has over 180 clubs and societies! It’s rather hard not to get involved! I’ve had the opportunity to work in the team for the annual ANU Student Research Conference. I have been elected as the President of the ANU Music Society and am a SET4ANU orientation leader. Overall my experiences at ANU have been life changing and I cannot wait to see what opportunities lie ahead in the future."

Bachelor of Advanced Computing (Research and Development) (Honours)

A unique, interdisciplinary degree that will prepare you to be a future leader in the information and communications technology revolution.

You will learn advanced computing techniques and have the opportunity to complete a unique major, while developing exceptional professional skills in areas of entrepreneurship and management.

Bachelor of Engineering (Research and Development) (Honours)

For high-achieving students interested in becoming innovators and future leaders in engineering.

This degree program combines the fundamental engineering courses with the opportunity to be immersed in research groups covering mechatronics, solar energy, materials and manufacturing.

When you graduate, you will be equipped to solve some of the world’s greatest challenges.

Bachelor of Finance, Economics and Statistics (Honours)

An elite program that integrates the three disciplines so you can develop a deep understanding of these fields.

You will be guided by a mentor throughout your studies, and when you graduate you will be recognised for your exceptional aptitude for quantitative financial analysis, conceptual thinking about claims on resources using statistics, problem-solving combining economic intuition and mathematical techniques.

Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) (PhB) / Bachelor of Science (Honours) (NUS)

The PhB(Hons)/BSc(Hons) can be taken in three majors (Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics) and is offered as a joint single degree program by the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Colleges of Science at ANU.

This highly selective program provides a challenging course of study for students who have a strong interest in and aptitude for graduate research work.

Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) (PhB) / Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (NUS)

Jointly offered with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the PhB is suitable for you if you are intellectually ambitious and have an interest in English, History, Political Science or Philosophy, and wish to complete a period of study in Singapore.

Bachelor of Philosophy – Asia & The Pacific

An innovative, research-focused undergraduate degree designed for intellectually curious students who want to explore their interests beyond the classroom. It’s the only program of its kind where disciplinary knowledge is enriched by a deep regional understanding of Asia and the Pacific.

A Bachelor and a Master degree in one study program - graduate with two qualifications

ANU has pioneered the Flexible Vertical Double Degree to give you a head start with a Master degree to gain knowledge, skills and experience that can equip you to work across a broad range of roles and organisations, anywhere in the world.

Save time & moneyThis vertical study program gives you credit for related areas of study, so you can save time (and money) when compared with studying a Bachelor degree and a Master degree separately.

Specialise or go broadStudying a Master degree in the same field as your Bachelor degree will give you depth of knowledge and specialist skills. Or you can take your Master degree in a different field to broaden your knowledge and develop your transferrable skills.

Freedom to exploreIf you study an eligible Bachelor degree program at ANU, you can opt-in to a Flexible Vertical Double Degree program straight after you enrol, or up until you have completed 72 units of study. Maintain the required Grade Point Average, and you will transition into the Masters component of your study program at 96 units.

Studying at university opens your eyes to a wide range of disciplines - many of which you won't have encountered until you arrive. The benefits of aiming for this flexible program are that you can explore what ANU offers before settling on a discipline area. Then when you're ready, you can choose from over 300 Flexible Vertical Double Degree combinations - explore first, decide later.

Here's a handful of our Flexible Vertical Double Degree programs to get you thinking.

> You love music and want a career in the music industry ... Bachelor of Music/Juris Doctor

> You want to make a difference in people's lives ... Bachelor of Science/Master of Public Health

> You're fascinated by the cultures of our regional neighbours ... Bachelor of Art History & Curatorship/Master of International Relations.

Amit PoonathIndiaBachelor of Psychology (Honours) / Juris Doctor

"My name is Amit Poonath, I finished a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons.) from the ANU and I am currently enrolled in a Juris Doctor program. I am an international student from India and this is my ANU story.

The ANU exemplifies the phrase world-class. The unique exposure to excellent learning experiences coupled with access to the world’s leading minds makes ANU a global hub of knowledge. My time at the ANU has been colourful to say the least. I have had the good fortune of engaging in a range of academic and extracurricular activities over the course of my tenure. From engaging in national and international academic internships, conferences and mentoring programs; to residential leadership positions, community outreach and personal development programs, I have been able to uphold and cherish a standard that is characteristic of the ANU community.

The ANU is not just another university; I have found it to be a dedicated institution that paves way for growing minds to be nurtured. I chose ANU and in turn chose a world of opportunities."

Nu NguyenVietnamBachelor of International Security Studies

"I’m from Vietnam. I chose ANU because it’s one of the top 20 universities in the world, on par with many top British and American universities. During my time in the Bachelor of International Security Studies, I’ve had my ups and downs, challenges and rewards. Every class’s robust and detailed discussion comes with rigorous self-research on topics. Every essay is the fruit of hard work and long hours of labour.

I’ve taken a minor in Historical International Security because I like history subjects and I think they are essential for an international student like myself to become familiar with Western cultures and their progress of civilisation.

Without the study of history, it would be challenging to make sense of what’s happening today. In the future, I hope to work at a non-government organisation like the United Nations or ASEAN. These organisations are where I can apply the most of my knowledge and findings and actively contribute to peacekeeping."

Plan your degreeYou can tailor your studies to suit your interests or careers goals through your majors, minors and specialisations.

Degree programsChoose from a range of innovative and flexible options and design a degree that suits you.

What’s a major?

A major is an area within a program that allows in-depth study in a particular field. A major usually consists of a set number of related courses. Majors at ANU require 48 units of study. Typically, each course is worth six units.

Then, what’s a minor?

As the name suggests, a minor has fewer requirements to fulfil than a major, in terms of points and compulsory courses. Minors at ANU require 24 units of study – so typically four courses.

And a specialisation?

Similar to a minor, a specialisation is an area of study with its own courses that are allowed to be taken in conjunction with a specific related major.

> For more information on majors, minors and specialisations go to programsandcourses.anu.edu.au

A single Bachelor Degree

Single degrees take between three and four years to complete and allow you to focus on a structured discipline, or experience a broad range of subjects.

Flexible Double Degrees

ANU welcomes close to 3,000 international students each year. If you would like to be one of them in 2020, apply early for the best chance of success.

As an international student, you can apply directly to ANU, or use one of our international agents located around the world.

> ANU admits students twice a year, in Semester 1 and Semester 2.

> For each semester intake, there are up to three application rounds. Apply in the first round, and you may have three opportunities to be assessed and accepted for that semester, giving you the best chance of getting a place.

> You can only apply for one program, although you can change your preference during the application process.

> You need to meet pre-requisite, cognate and English language requirements for your program by the application deadline for the round, as we will not be issuing any conditional offers.

> You are ranked against other candidates applying for the same degree and places are limited.

> You need to pay a non-refundable application fee of A$100.

The Application process

* We use your academic qualification or sequence of study to give you an ANU Selection Rank out of 99.95. Your ANU Selection Rank is used to determine if you meet the minimum requirements for your preferred ANU program.

† If you're completing an Australian Year 12, a New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3, or an International Baccalaureate (IB), you need to apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Go to uac.edu.au for more information.

Be a part of our residential community on campus.

Living on campus, you’ll form close bonds through shared experiences with your peers. You will become part of an important support network as you help each other through assessments, exam periods, and the ups and downs of university life.

ANU has 12 different residences for undergraduate students. You can nominate a fully-catered, self-catered or apartment-style residence. All have laundry facilities, outdoor spaces and study rooms, and are within easy walking distance to shops, cafes, restaurants, sporting facilities, nightlife and public transport.

Go to anu.edu.au/study/accommodation for more information.

Cost of livingIn addition to accommodation costs, you will also have other costs to consider when moving out of home to study at university. It is a good idea to make a list of your expenses, for example: mobile phone and internet, textbooks and stationery, and transport and entertainment. Draw up a budget based on your circumstances to help you work out how much money you will need to live on while you are at university.

Go to anu.edu.au/students/program-administration/costs-fees/cost-of-living for more information.

Guide to ongoing weekly expenses

Allow about $400 AUD per week to cover food, accommodation, transport, electricity, internet, telephone bills and entertainment.

ANU-recommended accommodation If, due to various reasons, you’re unable to secure accommodation on campus, the ANU recommends the following accommodation options off campus:

> Weeden Lodge (self-catered)

> The Australian Institute of Sport residences (fully-catered)

> University of Canberra Village (self-catered)

All of these residences are located in the Canberra suburb of Belconnen, and are an easy bus ride to ANU. They provide some pastoral support to all residents and any agreements entered into with these locations are between the student and the provider.

Marlon MaChinaB. Science (Psychology)

"Moving overseas is a big deal. You might be feeling excited, adventurous, and perhaps a little nervous. You’re adapting to a new home, new university, new language and new friends."

Or, unexpectedly in Marlon’s case, adapting to new food.

“Pasta in Australia is great!” gushes Marlon.

After just two weeks in Canberra, 20 year old Marlon is already enjoying the fruits of this multi-cultural country.

“It’s my first time in Australia. Everything’s fabulous!

I’m really curious about the Australian university life and experience.” Aside from adjusting to new food, Marlon along with his fellow peers have adapted to a new campus culture and way of life, where they live together at Fenner Hall and are supported by staff at ANU.

“Fenner Hall hosts lots of events and activities, it’s like a community. Last night we had a tea night with Tim-Tams. I’ve already signed up to the ANU Basketball Club, Psychology Society and some Chinese clubs to meet other Chinese students.” Having only just begun his life as an ANU student, Marlon is looking forward to trying the next cuisine on his list, Mexican, and continuing to expect the unexpected when it comes to life in Canberra and at ANU.

Andrea Bedón PinedaEcuador

"Andrea travelled from her home in Ecuador to study at ANU, working in world-leading laboratories and with experienced professors to ensure her future as a successful engineer. Upon graduating high school, Andrea was awarded the Universidades de Excelencia, a government scholarship offering her the opportunity to study at any of the top 50 universities in the world. Of all the countries she could choose from, Andrea was immediately drawn to Australia’s warm climate.

Ultimately, ANU was the perfect fit. It offered Andrea’s specific degree, Engineering majoring in Renewable Energy Systems, at an undergraduate level. Within this degree, Andrea was positive she would gain the skills necessary to develop technology that could help communities. “This engineering degree will give me the technical skills and the analytical skills to solve global problems, such as climate change."

Keat Hui (Brandon) NgMalaysiaBachelor of Actuarial Studies

Bachelor of Actuarial Studies student Keat Hui (Brandon) Ng was named Undergraduate Intern of The Year 2017 for his excellent performance in an internship with aviation surveillance consultancy IE Asia Pacific.

He says that taking part in the CBE Internship Program has given him a competitive edge compared to his peers.

"The exposure to working for an Australian company is very valuable for international students like me. It enabled me to reflect on my own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to a real-life working environment. Thanks to my internship host, I had the opportunity to apply what I have learnt throughout my degree into my internship project," Brandon said.

His workplace supervisor Dominic Nadvillaveetil nominated Brandon for the award, to recognise Brandon for being hardworking, focused on the job, a great team player and for going above and beyond the requirements of his internship to deliver a useful business solution.

Reflecting on the internship program, Mr Nadvillaveetil said “the interns worked on a critical piece of information which the company wanted to research. The experience was fantastic as it gives us a chance to work with new and motivated young students like Brandon who are looking to prove themselves.

Get job-ready skills and contribute to something bigger than you. Take on some amazing internships here and overseas, some of which are exclusive to ANU.
