The Orion Cup has been established to pay tribute to Pia Fortmuller’s KWPN Grand Prix partner. Orion was an Olympic Team horse for Canada, trained to the Advanced level by Pia’s former coach, Leslie Reid, who represented Canada with Orion at the 2008 Olympic Games in Hong Kong.

In the fall of 2009 Orion was sent to Europe to be sold, during that same time Pia, a 2006 NAJYRC Gold Medalist, also moved to Europe.

It was during this time the two began a partnership, and Pia subsequently purchased Orion. At the age of 25, Pia rode in her first Grand Prix with Orion, and they went on to compete very successfully at the International Grand Prix level in Europe.

Orion took Pia all the way to the Canadian Senior Team, and their career together culminated when they were named the reserve combination for the 2012 Olympic Dressage Team in London.

Sadly, Orion died in January, 2014. His passing was not only a loss to Canadian dressage, but a devastating personal loss to Pia and her family.

“I never truly lost Orion for he will always live on in my heart, and it brings me an incredible amount of joy to know that Orion will also live on in the legacy of the Orion Cup,” says Pia Fortmuller.

THE ORION CUPThe Orion Cup’s purpose is to encourage and support young Canadian athletes with transitioning from the Young Rider level to the Grand Prix level. It is geared for athletes between the ages of 16-25 years old. The Orion Cup not only encourages young athletes to focus on training and planning, but also provides them with a tangible goal.

AWARDThe recipient of the Orion Cup will receive a commemorative jacket and cooler plus a $1,000 cash prize. In addition, the recipient will be recognized as the Orion Cup National Champion.

DRESSAGE LEVYAll EC sanctioned Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Dressage Competitions collect and remit $10 per horse entered in the competition to Equestrian Canada. The revenue generated from the Dressage Levy is used to support talent identification programs and the high performance teams representing Canada at major games and educational opportunities to support our Dressage / Para-Dressage riders of all levels.

DRESSAGE AWARDS PROGRAMDressage awards are given to qualified horses and riders that:

• Are 2020 Sport Licence holders that have selected dressage as their primary discipline

• Have registered with the Dressage Awards Program• Have submitted scores no later than October 31st

WHAT YOU NEED TO COMPETEIn Canada, there are four levels of Equestrian Canada sanctioned dressage shows: • Bronze• Silver• Gold • Platinum (FEI)

Bronze Shows: Competitors and owners require at least an EC Bronze sport licence, and a provincial membership from their respective province.

Silver Shows: Competitors and owners require at least an EC Silver sport licence, and a provincial membership from their respective province.

Gold Shows: Competitors and owners require at least an EC Gold sport licence, and a provincial membership from their respective province.

Platinum Shows: Competitors and owners require at least an EC Platinum sport licence, and a provincial membership from their respective province. FEI Passports and FEI memberships are required for CDI classes.

EQUESTRIAN CANADA HORSE RECORDINGS Following best practices used by other leading national federations, including the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), on Dec. 19, 2016, EC launched the new digital Horse Recording, and will no longer issue traditional EC Passport booklets.

EQUESTRIAN CANADA TRAINING AND FIRST LEVEL DRESSAGE EQUITATION CLASSESPurpose: The purpose of the EC Dressage Equitation program is to promote and reward correct seat, position, and use of aids in dressage for Child, Junior, and Amateur riders.

PURPOSE: To promote, reward and evaluate the dressage rider’s correct position, seat and use of aids. The performance of the horse is important only as it relates to the rider’s seat and aids. The quality of the horse should have no influence -the focus is on the rider. Given this priority, the Rising Stars team has created this innovative score sheet to assess equitation skills.

1. POSITIONAlignment, posture, stability, & weight placement in the walk, trot and canter. Ears/shoulder/hip/heel vertically aligned; heels level or slightly down, the front and back of the rider’s trunk should be of equal length; straight line from elbow to horse’s mouth. Contact to be independent from rider’s seat, with hands carried steadily close together, the thumbs as highest point and straight line from elbow to horse’s mouth. Relaxed and supple position.

2. TRANSITIONSGeneral transitions between and within the gaits. All halts. Transitions should be well prepared, tactful and smooth and not abrupt. The horse should remain light in hand, calm and maintain a correct position. Calm transitions, willing, straight, attentive halt, immobile (3 sec.)

ARTICLE A519 VACCINATIONSAll horses attending Equestrian Canada sanctioned competitions must have been administered Equine Influenza and Equine Herpes Virus (1&4) vaccinations within 6 months (+21 days grace period) before arrival at the event. No horse shall receive vaccination within 7 days prior to arrival at the event. Horses not in compliance with this rule may be asked to leave event site at the discretion of Competition Management.

The frequency of vaccine administration should be as recommended by the vaccine manufacturer or veterinarian. It is recommended that vaccines be administered by or under the direction of a veterinarian. Competition management may request supporting documentation confirming a horse’s compliance with mandatory vaccination requirements.

2020 RULES OF EQUESTRIAN CANADA SECTION A PAGE 25In the case of a horse that is unable to receive either of the vaccines, a letter from a veterinarian on official letterhead must be provided with the entry form, stating the horse cannot be vaccinated due to medical concerns. THE BROSDA OLYMPIC BURSARY The Brosda Olympic Bursary is offered in memory of the late Élisabeth Brosda of Gatineau, QC. A passionate young equestrian and an accomplished dressage athlete, Élisabeth was tragically killed in a head on car collision in September of 2016. Élisabeth’s goal was to reach the Grand Prix level and represent Canada at the 2024 Olympic Games.

On behalf of the Brosda family, Equestrian Canada (EC) is honoured to facilitate support for

the Élisabeth Brosda Memorial Fund through the Horsepower Foundation - a fundraising program created by EC, in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Foundation, to inspire and support Canadians to embrace lifelong participation in equestrian activities.

As a lasting legacy in memory of Élisabeth Brosda, funds donated to the Élisabeth Brosda Memorial Fund are directed specifically to the annual Brosda Olympic Bursary.

Equestrian Canada (EC) is pleased to offer the Am I Ready Series, created as a tool to receive feedback from certified officials without leaving the comfort of their your stable. All for free.

Am I Ready features an online portal that allows riders to submit their performances of EC Dressage Tests. As this is a training and feedback tool, 20 x 60 m ring is not required, however, all movements should be shown as best as possible.

Upload your videos for review and evaluation by an EC certified dressage judge. Tests of all levels can be uploaded, from introduction to FEI.

Available exclusively to 2020 sport license holders who have indicated dressage as their primary discipline, Am I Ready is a user-friendly, free and convenient development resource for Canadian dressage enthusiasts from coast-to-coast - or anywhere in the world! A digital video recorder (or even simply a smartphone or tablet) and internet access is all that is needed to take advantage of the following benefits:

• Real-World Feedback: Athletes and their personal coaches can review test feedback from EC certified dressage judges and identify areas for improvement.

• Competition Preparation: Those looking to enter EC sanctioned competitions for the first time, or advance to a higher level of competition, can get a leg-up on preparation by implementing judge feedback at home before entering the ring.

FOURTH LEVEL Purpose: To confirm that the horse demonstrates correct basics, and has de-

veloped sufficient suppleness, impulsion and throughness to per-form the Fourth Level tests which have a medium degree of difficulty. The horse remains reliably on the bit, showing a clear uphill balance and lightness as a result of improved engagement and collection. The movements are performed with greater straightness, energy and cadence than at Third Level.

ARTICLE E 7.11.9 MAXIMUM NUMBER OF LEVELS/TESTS/

CLASSES PER HORSE PER DAY1. A horse/rider combination may compete in any two, but only two

consecutive levels and a maximum of four tests per day including the freestyle for Introductory, Training and First levels, and three tests per day including the freestyle for Second; Third and Fourth levels and all FEI tests.

2. No horse may compete in more that four tests or rides combined per day, including the freestyle subject to E 7.11.9.1 above.

3. A horse may compete in any two, but only two consecutive levels and a maximum of four tests per day including the freestyle subject to E 7.11.9.1 above.

4. When more than one athlete competes on the same horse, the horse may not compete against itself and may not compete in more than four tests or rides per day including the freestyle if the tests or rides are First level or below and three tests or rides per day at Second level or above. See E 7.11.9.1.

5. Equitation, Materiale and non-EC classes are included in the maximum of four classes per day at First level or below and three classes at Second level or above. See E 7.11.9.1.

6. In-hand classes are exempt from this rule.

Note: When riding FEI tests in EC competitions, FEI Intermediate I and FEI Intermediate II tests are not consecutive levels. FEI Intermediate I is part of the small tour and Intermediate II is part of the Grand Prix division.

In 1996, the FEI introduced Dressage Tests for Five and Six Year Old Horses at International Level.

In 2006, the FEI introduced the Dressage Tests for Four Year Old Horses, a test which is to be used at EC competitions only.

Basic Ideas: The handiness, basic paces and general impression of the horse as a dressage horse will be judged. Judges should ask whether or not the performance of the horse corresponds to the general idea of a dressage horse; whether the horse is on the correct training path; and whether the horse has the ability to perform dressage at a high level.

Special emphasis has to be made on soft and constant contact, the satisfactory activity of the mouth, and elastic poll in the three basic gaits and in the transitions. The steps and strides must be in rhythm and without tension. Flexion and bending, the harmonious development on both hands and suppleness are important.There must be impulsion, which has to be developed through the hindquarters, leading into a swinging back and a soft and steady contact.

In order to receive classification, athletes must meet the minimal impairment criteria as outlined in the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) classification manual and be actively competing in Equestrian Canada (EC) sanctioned Bronze competitions with a goal for competing at the Silver and Gold level in the immediate future.

Classification provides athletes with a physical and visual impairment the opportunity to compete against other athletes with similar abilities. Testing is conducted by an EC Classifier who evaluates athletes for their either muscle strength, coordination, or a combination thereof throughout the athlete’s body using a standardized classification system.

Athletes are classified and given a “Grade” based on their functional ability, and are judged on their riding skill against other athletes of the same grade. Athletes are assessed by EC Classifiers and are given a “Grade” based on their functional abilities in areas such as: muscle power, joint range, and coordination. There are five Grades of competitions in Para-Dressage, with Grade I representing the more severely impaired riders, and Grade V representing the least severely impaired riders.

EC classifies/assesses athletes in accordance with the methods and standards of the FEI (as outlined in the FEI classification manual).

At each Grade athletes may receive approval to use specific compensatory aids during competition, which would be listed on the athlete’s classification card. The purpose of compensatory aids (sometimes known as adaptive tack or specialized equipment) is to level the competitive playing field. Examples of compensatory aids include: rubber bands on stirrups, voice commands, two whips, etc. While compensatory aids are varied and can be unique to a rider, they should never provide an advantage to the athlete.

Many Para-Dressage athletes also compete alongside able-bodied competitors in EC competitions. At the grass-roots level, Para-Dressage encompasses a number of different disciplines, while the international stream focuses only on Para-Dressage.

CLASSIFICATION MASTER LISTS FOR 2020

Please note that as of Jan. 1, 2019, Equestrian Canada (EC) Para-Dressage Classification Cards have been replaced with the National Classification Master Lists in an effort to correspond with processes used by the FEI. Para-Dressage Classification Cards are no longer valid.

Athletes with a physical or visual impairment who use compensating aids and compete at EC sanctioned competitions must be listed on the National Classification Master List that identifies which compensating aids are permitted in competition. These lists include the EC Classification Master List and the EC Para-Dressage Dispensation Certificate List.

The EC Para-Dressage Classification Master List will include athlete name, profile grade, compensating aids, and classification status and review date if required.

The lists will be updated monthly or as required.

Additionally, classified para-dressage athletes holding a current EC Sport Licence will be able to print a copy of their classification profile through MyEC. The following is an example of a printable classification profile:

2020 PARA-DRESSAGE VIDEO COMPETITION

Equestrian Canada (EC) is pleased to announce the dates for the 2020 Para-Dressage Video Competition Series, which allows athletes to experience competition conditions in the comfort of their home stable and on a familiar horse.

All current EC Sport Licence Holders who select Para-Dressage as their primary discipline with their 2020 Sport Licence may qualify for the Para-Dressage Recognition Year-End Awards.

These awards are offered for Para-Dressage, and are designed to give the sport greater visibility, and encourage participation of athletes, coaches and owners.

The Para-Dressage Recognition Year-End Awards will be presented annually to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our developing and high performance athletes, their coaches and horses, as well as our generous and committed horse owners and volunteers.
