PCA Golf Tournament

Don’t cancel your plans, postpone them instead.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERSREJOIN

3 PCA P IPEL INE NEWS, JULY 2020

Ideas for hosting a safer event include:

1. Keeping to under 50 guests. Fewer guests may allow you to splurge on high-end food or drinks that perhaps you would not spend on a larger crowd.

2. Spacing guests out appropriately so not everyone is close together in the same room.

3. Hosting a small celebration now and announcing plans for a larger gathering for when the time is right. For example, hold an intimate wedding dinner this summer and a larger reception later. Or if a graduation party was cancelled, consider a college send-off party instead.

We understand that we are living in unusual times. Let the PCA help you make the right decisions for you to safely get the most out of your membership. If you have any questions about event planning, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected].

Let’s face it. Since COVID-19 came into our lives, it can be difficult to make decisions about anything from something as small as going to the grocery store to larger conundrums such as whether to host a previously planned wedding or anniversary party.

If you’re unsure about the future of an event you’ve either already scheduled at the Club or would like to schedule with us, go ahead and schedule anyway, as you can always postpone if necessary. Going ahead with your plans allows you first pick of the date you want, early planning for food, table linens, decorations, and of course, the courtesy of giving your invited guests plenty of time to plan.

Dear Members,

The Covid-19 virus is no respecter of fun-loving Alaskans. Just when we all thought that we might be able to resume activities at some sense of normality this ugly thing shows us that we must not be overly optimistic about business as usual. Personally, I always expect the best in all situations but often get a reality check that the rest of the world doesn’t always work this way. Starting Monday, June 29, masks will be mandatory in indoor public spaces, which includes the PCA even though we are a private club. Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz announced the Emergency Order on June 26, so please remember to bring a mask when visiting the Club.

We started off June with the Club open for normal hours of operation. The PCA Board quickly realized this was not going to work. People were not returning to their offices, they continued to work from home, and lunch time patronage which started off with a bang began dwindling rapidly. The Board decided it was best for the Club to operate at

the reduced hours of 4pm to 9pm Monday through Friday. This has proven to be a good move and one that currently sees steady business. Everyone seems be adjusting to the required protocols and we are all having fun enjoying the Patio on nice days and hanging out inside when it’s less inviting out there.

Many thanks to PCA Board member John Hendrix of HEX LLC for sponsoring a night of champagne and oysters on the Patio Friday June 19th. It was a great night and Tyler Kalbfleisch did a great job of entertaining us with his excellent music.

Other live music sponsors are beginning to come forward. Join us Thursday, July 16th at 5:00 p.m. as we welcome local country singer/songwriter, Schaefer Mueller. Enjoy butler-passed oysters and Champagne courtesy of our evening’s generous sponsor, PCA Member Peter Leathard.

The 45th Annual PCA Golf Tournament on August 14th at the Anchorage Golf Course needs your support with teams and sponsorships. This year’s golf chair Fred Miller is putting together a great event.

On August 21st, The Vintage Retro hits the patio stage. Look for announcements from Tracy in Marketing through emails and on Facebook regarding updates on future events.

Also, please support the OneAlaska Vote No on 1 campaign. This ballot measure is a huge threat to the Oil Industry in Alaska and jeopardizes our economy, local businesses, and jobs for Alaskans. It puts our entire future at risk. For more information go to www.OneAlaska.com.

All the best,

- Tom Redmond, President

Join us Thursday, July 16 at 5:00 p.m. as we welcome local country singer/songwriter, Schaefer Mueller to the Club. A native of Chesterfield, Virginia, this country singer/songwriter is sure to grab your attention. In 2017 he took a songwriting retreat to Afghanistan where he found his sound and decided to pursue a life in music. Taking inspiration from all genres of music, his writing began to take shape. You’ll hear country music with a few extras sprinkled in. Mueller promises an evening spent listening to his sound will “make you feel like you’re with drinking buddies by a campfire.” Have a listen to his feel-good music at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgsfkeAtevrzRw-7ITt6d9w

As you soak up the sounds, enjoy butler-passed oysters and Champagne courtesy of our evening’s generous sponsor, PCA Member Peter Leathard. Mr. Leathard says he’s sponsoring as “a welcome to summer for anybody and everybody who wishes to gather for an evening of fun.” Thank you, Mr. Leathard!

Start your weekend with

Live Music on the PCA Patio!Come back to the Club for more live music on the patio on August 21st with The Vintage Retro. Based out of Anchorage, The Vintage Retro plays the amazing music of the 60’s and 70’s including Rock, Funk, Motown, Blues, R&B, and Soul. In Anchorage, they’ve played at the Blue Fox Lounge, Humpy’s Alehouse, and Chair 5 in Girdwood, just to name a few stops of this popular local band. Its members include David Nathanson on Bass, Jeff Flannery on Guitar, Pili Queja on Drums, and Josh Antonio on Saxophone. Visit their website at https://www.reverbnation.com/thevintageretro to hear a sample of their catchy sound.

Tee times are 7:00 a.m. for stroke play and 1:00 p.m. for the Scramble; both tee times have a shotgun start.

The tournament concludes with the Awards Banquet and Dinner Friday night at the PCA starting at 5:00 p.m. Relive your best tournament moments with friends over a beverage at the no-host cocktail hour in the bar, followed by dinner.

Tradition, camaraderie, and an experience like no other. If you only play one tournament this summer, make it the PCA Golf Tournament.

Every Alaskan could use another great salmon recipe in their arsenal. PCA Chef Matt Kenyon shares an easy favorite that you can cook at home.

Chef Matt has been preparing and presenting amazing high-quality food for the PCA since 2018. He has a passion for serving good food using innovative techniques and working alongside PCA Executive Chef John O’Neil to develop dishes unmatched in Anchorage. His claims to fame include competing in the Alaska State Fair’s Seafood Throw Down Competition and coming in 2nd place at Alaska’s Beer and Bacon festival with a winning pork belly dish.

What’s Cooking?Grilled Salmon with Orzo Pasta Salad

1. Cook pasta al dente, cool, and toss with olive oil to prevent

sticking.

2. Slice your vegetables: red onion, tomatoes, cucumbers, and

arugula; set aside.

3. Toss orzo pasta with your favorite store-bought pesto (It’s

summer! Who has extra time to make pesto?)

4. Heat your grill or cast-iron pan; spray with oil to prevent

sticking.

5. Season salmon with salt & pepper, lemon pepper, and

squeeze fresh lemon juice over fish as you are cooking it.

6. Once fish is cooked, toss orzo with pesto and sliced

vegetables; finish with grated parmesan cheese and enjoy!

*Pro-tip: Add more acidity, lemon juice or fresh herbs to store-

bought pesto to enhance flavor.

The WAC, the Rainier Club, and the Bellevue Club are three of our most popular reciprocal clubs. Located in Washington State not only are they just a short flight away, but they also consistently provide a comfortable and welcoming home away from home for many PCA members. Due to the changes brought on by COVID-19, there are restrictions in place that you should know about before traveling to the Seattle area this summer.

Washington Athletic Club is open with restrictions. A Washington State Mandate requires face masks to be worn inside the Clubhouse which has reworked its HVAC system to bring in 100% outside air with no recirculation. Social distancing is also required.

The Inn at the WAC remains closed but is scheduled to reopen July 6. For details visit www.wac.net.

The Rainier Club’s clubhouse is currently closed; however curbside food pickup is available. The Club is also offering a variety of virtual experiences for members. The Rainier Club hopes to re-open during phase 2 of Washington’s Phased Re-opening Plan. Learn more at www.therainierclub.com.

The Bellevue Club is open however, the Club’s hotel is currently closed and is not expected to reopen until October. Upon entry, you will be asked to confirm that you do not exhibit COVID-19 symptoms and will be temperature checked. A one-time liability waiver related to COVID-19 is in place for anyone who uses the Club. Face masks and social distancing are required. Visit www.bellevueclub.com for updates.

Several of our reciprocal clubs remain closed or are under restrictions based on local COVID-19 mandates. Members are encouraged to call ahead or check the website of an Outside club you wish to visit in the coming months. A list of our reciprocal clubs can be found on the PCA website, www.petroclub.net under the tab Our Club.

Treat yourself to an exclusive 5-course meal at the Club. PCA Executive Chef John O’Neil will celebrate summer by using the freshest, most carefully chosen ingredients to prepare and present to you at your table.

For July’s dinner, Chef John will focus on flavors of the season. A full menu will be emailed to registered guests one week prior to the event. You can also check your club emails and/or Facebook page for details as we get closer to the date.

The PCA Chef’s Table Dinner is $125 per person and includes a glass of Champagne at the start of the evening and a glass of dessert wine at the finish. For other courses, we encourage you to choose from either your PCA Wine Locker or our Captain’s List, which contains more than 1200 bottles stored in the Club’s wine room. Ask your experienced server or bartender for suggestions. This dinner is limited to just 30 guests, so register early at www.petroclub.net.

July is a time of long, warm days and lighter meals. Perfect for taking advantage of some new wine offerings at the Club. We are pleased to announce the addition of two delicious wines, DAOU Vineyards Rose and Roederer Estate Brut.

Just $7 Glass or $26 Bottle, DAOU Vineyards Rose pairs beautifully with fresh salmon or Asian dishes, such as our popular Ahi Tuna Salad. Fragrances of fresh strawberry, peach, and watermelon will greet your nose while first sip reveals a crisp yet smooth, juicy flavor. A long, clean finish lingers in this elegant, bright summer wine.

Listed as #27 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2018, Roederer Estate Brut is the first California sparkling wine produced by Champagne Louis Roederer. Sleek and luxurious, with expressive Asian pear, strawberry blossom and roasted hazelnut flavors, Roederer Estate Brut exhibits rich flavor and an opulent finish. Oak Barrel aged for up to three years, wines from this reserve cellar are added to the blend, creating a multi-vintage cuvee in the traditional Roederer style, known for its body, finesse and depth of flavor. At only $34 per bottle, this wine is easy on your wallet and extremely satisfying to enjoy with friends on a warm, summer evening.

To see the complete PCA Wine Lists, visit our website www.petroclub.net or ask your experienced server for a recommendation from our exclusive Captain’s List, comprised of more than 1200 bottles stored in the Club’s Wine Room.

You’ve seen him mainly behind the bar, serving up your favorite drinks along with the occasional joke, words of wisdom, and always a smile. Now, our valued Bartender, Jaime Bost has been promoted to serve as the Club’s Waitstaff Supervisor. Jaime replaces former PCA Waitstaff Supervisor, Sandra Hurd, who has decided to spend more time with her family. She will be missed, and we wish her well!

Born in Mexico 57 years ago, Jaime has been in the restaurant business for 38 years. He moved to Alaska in 2012 to open both of Anchorage’s Olive Garden restaurants as a service manager and has been with the PCA since March of 2014. He has taken continuing service industry education courses, including several on how to keep an establishment’s food and beverage costs down while still offering the best experience for its customers.

Jaime is married with six children. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and camping with his family. Be sure to say hello and congratulations to him next time you dine with us.
