2020 has been a year of change, of challenge, and of transformation from hardship to strength.
We made the most of this year by staying connected. Our local chapters throughout the country found new ways to engage with each other, our virtual annual conference, NSA@Home, welcomed 1,604 attendees, and our Global Research Conference convened speech-language pathologists, speech-language scientists, people who stutter, and others interested in diving deeper into their knowledge base about stuttering. Stuttering was launched into the national discourse, and the National Stuttering Association remained a reliable and credible voice to provide education and understanding of stuttering to the public.
You have continued to grace us with your support, laughter, and the warmth that has allowed us to move forward together, even when we were physically apart. Your financial support during the past fiscal year allowed the NSA to continue to flourish and provide much-needed resources. Throughout this annual report, you will see the names of those who went above and beyond and made the conscious choice to give to us so we, in turn, could give to you. An inspiring total of 1,759 donors made that decision in 2020, and for that we are truly grateful.
Thank you, as always, for your enduring support of the NSA and the stuttering community. We are committed to staying true to our belief that instilling a sense of self-worth can transform the lives of people who stutter as well as the communities that support them.

2020: A YEAR IN REVIEWNSA@HOMENothing was going to stop us, not even a pandemic, from hosting our annual conference. We pivoted and created a virtual version of our life-changing conference. Of the 1,604 NSA@Home attendees, over 800 were first-time attendees to an NSA conference. We delivered nearly twenty virtual sessions, including roundtable discussions, workshops for kids and adults, and keynote conversations with reporter John Hendrickson and emergency room physician Cleavon Gilman, MD.
NSA CONNECTSNSA Connects was launched in the second half of 2020 to continue the momentum from our virtual conference. We hosted fifteen Zoom meetings bringing together different audiences of the stuttering community from Passing Twice to Covert PWS to Intersectionality to Older Adults who Stutter to Parents.
GLOBAL RESEARCH CONFERENCEWhen major conferences for speech-language professionals were canceled, the NSA stepped up to offer a 3-Day Global Research Conference. We packed the agenda with world-class presenters offering sessions on topics including cutting-edge research, recent medical findings, and the latest in evidence-based therapy techniques.
MY CAUSE MY CLEATSThe NSA was honored to be the charity benefactor chosen by Brandon Shell of the Seattle Seahawks and Michael Pittman, Jr. of the Indianapolis Colts for the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats program. Each player wore custom-designed NSA cleats during a game in December 2020.
GENERATIONSYoung people who stutter can benefit significantly from becoming friends with someone older, a mentor, who also stutters. Our GENERATIONS program has partnered 81 young people with a mentor. Friendships have been formed while talking about stuttering, life, hobbies, sports, movies, playing video games, and so much more. These relationships are developed through once-a-month video chat or text/email conversations.
WE STUTTER @ WORKThe NSA is driven to improve the employment opportunities of people who stutter. Our We Stutter @ Work program informs, inspires, and equips people who stutter to achieve career success. Since 2019, we’ve presented nearly twenty webinars, shared over 50 profiles of successful professionals who stutter, and conducted over 30 practice job interviews for people who stutter.
LOCAL CHAPTERS“If You Stutter, You Are Not Alone” is more than the NSA’s motto; it’s our promise. Our 200-plus local Adult & Family Chapters followed through on our commitment in 2020 by transitioning from hosting in-person meetings to holding virtual online meetings. Many people in the stuttering community experienced greater feelings of isolation, more stress, and higher anxiety during the pandemic. Our 381 Chapter Leaders have provided invaluable support and personal connection for adults, teens, kids, and parents through hosting monthly meetings online.
Not many people will leave a mark on the world like Barry Liben did. Barry was a savvy businessman, fiercely loyal friend, and proud husband, father, and grandfather, with an unfailingly generous heart. The NSA and the stuttering community lost one of its most dedicated champions. Barry touched so many lives, and he will be missed dearly. Barry Liben and longtime friend, supporter, and mentor to the NSA died in January 2020 after a year-long health battle at the age of 67. Liben served as Chairman of Tzell Travel/Travel Leaders Group, an international travel management company with headquarters in New York City. Before that, he was president and CEO for more than 40 years. Barry served on a number of association and community organization boards during his time in the industry, including the
Israel Community Development Foundation and the National Stuttering Association.
Barry’s spirit of service was unmatched. Barry, along with his family, was a member of the NSA since 1998. His primary focus was in securing the financial stability of the NSA and fundraising, enabling more energy to be used for outreach, education, and support. We are forever indebted to his generosity and unwavering support of the NSA and our work within the stuttering community. Barry lived in Manhattan his wife Sindy, and often found his home filled with his three beautiful children and their spouses and his seven amazing grandkids.

On January 24, 2019, the community of people who stutter lost one of its dearest members.
Dr. Frederick P. Murray was perhaps best known as author of ‘A Stutterer’s Story’, a pioneering book written from the perspective of a person who stutters. Personally, many people knew Fred for his festive shirts, his passionate spirit, and his encouraging words. Fred was a speech-language pathologist, scholar (Professor Emeritus, University of New Hampshire), mentor, and trusted friend to many. He was well-traveled and highly proficient in three languages.
Fred believed that it is important for people who stutter to work on developing themselves, completely, as people. For this reason, Fred was a generous supporter of many organizations that advocate for people who stutter, including the NSA, the Stuttering Foundation of America and Friends.
Most importantly, he was excited about the future for new generations of people who stutter. Fred will be missed, but never forgotten, by his many friends and admirers around the world.
