HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HAND SANITIZER

While proper hand washing with soap and water is best, Joslyn member Dr. Alfred Bloch recommends making a Purell equivalent from a mixture of 99% alcohol and aloe vera gel. Do not use easily available 60% alcohol.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTIOR Since suspending onsite services on March 17, we sure miss our members and look forward to welcoming you back as soon as possible. However, there is still a lot happening — exercise classes, a daily variety show, educational classes, and other activities - on our Facebook page. If you are a Facebook member, please “like” The Joslyn Center’s page. If you are not but would like keep active and engaged, please visit www.facebook.com/joslyncenter. This provides limited access so if you like what you see, you can join Facebook, “like” our page, and enjoy our online programs. Even though our onsite programs and activities are now “virtual,” we still wanted to keep in touch with this newsletter and to let you know about our Special Delivery letter writing initiative – sending cards and letters to our homebound Meals on Wheels recipients. This is an idea for those of you who do not use the internet and would like to brighten our clients’ day. More information can be found on page 4. If you received a membership renewal, please renew your membership. We depend on members to help support the center and we want to be here in full operation when we can reopen. The Joslyn Center is continuing with essential programs including Meals on Wheels and Penny’s Pantry. A big thank you to our heroic volunteers who make sure homebound seniors receive their daily meal and that low-income seniors can access Penny’s Pantry food bank. If you can donate to the End Senior Hunger campaign to support these programs, please do! Our board of directors is working very hard to ensure that we can continue offering essential nutrition programs and online programs. They are making sure that we all emerge from this pandemic stronger than ever. From the board, staff, and dedicated volunteers; thank you for your support, stay well, and let us know if you need any assistance. We are just a phone call away.

Jack Newby Executive Director

END SENIOR HUNGER While we shelter in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Joslyn Center must also prepare for the HOT summer months. Our Meals on Wheels program doesn't stop; not for COVID-19 and not for 115-degree weather. Why? Because many seniors are home alone and unable to shop or cook for themselves. The Joslyn Center is the only source of a nutritious meal and friendly face for many. Please help those who depend on their Meals on Wheels delivery. We can't do it without YOU.

IRS STIMULUS CHECK SCAMS Most people who qualify for a check will automatically get it direct deposited by the IRS within weeks but there are still scams to watch out for. For people without direct deposit, checks will start arriving via US Mail in May at the earliest. If you get an economic impact payment, stimulus, or relief check before then, or you get a check when you're expecting a direct deposit, it's a scam. Scammers use official-looking fake checks to steal money and confuse people into turning over personal information. The IRS will not send you an overpayment and make you send the money back in cash, gift cards, or through a money transfer. If you get an official-looking check for more than what you were expecting - say, for $3,000 - the next call you're likely to get is from a scammer. They'll tell you to keep your $1,200 payment, and return the rest by sending cash, gift cards, or money transfers. It's a scam that will leave you owing money to your bank. That's not the IRS calling, texting, or emailing. Scammers are sending official-looking messages - including postcards with a password to be used online to "access" or "verify" your payment or direct deposit information. The IRS will not contact you to collect your personal information or bank account. It's a scam. For trusted information and updates about IRS payments - including eligibility, how to sign up for direct deposit, or where to file a short tax form - always start with irs.gov/coronavirus.
