Morris County was named after Colonel Lewis Morris,

Governor of New Jersey in 1738-1739,

the year the county was named.

Few places have experienced the kind of boom in

popularity that Morris County has had over the past

few years. People love it – and for good reason.

From arts to farms to business to lifestyle,

Morris County’s 39 towns has something for everyone.

1. Morristown

You might think having Manhattan only 30 miles

away would overshadow an area, but even with

its large commuter culture, Morristown holds its

own. Thousands of people flock to Morristown for

dining, entertainment, shopping, socializing and

enjoying its many arts festivals throughout the year.

In addition to being the county seat, Morristown is

the home of the historic Morristown Green, several

early American historic museums, the Morristown

Medical Center and cultural institutions like the Mayo

Performing Arts Center (MPAC).

2. Morris Township

Morris Township, named for Colonial Governor

Lewis Morris, was founded in 1740. Its history and

development runs the gamut from farming to

wealthy suburbs, within its borders. Many Gilded

Age estates survive as popular destinations such as

the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Fosterfields Living

Historical Farm and The Morris Museum.

3. Parsippany-Troy Hills

Parsippany-Troy Hills regularly earns a spot on

The Best Places to Live in the United States lists.

Established when it split from Hanover Township

in 1928, its ancient history dates back at least

6,000 years, as evidenced by its petroglyph sites.

Parsippany gets its name from the Lenni Lenape

word parsipanong, which means “the place where

the river winds through the valley.” Here you will find

one of Morris County’s national historic landmark -

The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms.

4. Boonton

The original Village of Boonton (dating back to the

mid-1700s) sits under the Jersey City Reservoir.

Modern-day Boonton began in 1829, during the

construction of the Morris Canal and development

of the New Jersey Iron Company. Boonton served as

a crucial stop on the Underground Railroad and is

home of the world famous Boontonware. While the

vaudeville theaters, historic hotels and trolley cars of

twentieth-century Boonton have now been replaced

with restaurants and high-tech companies, Boonton

still retains all of its quaint charm.

5. Chester, Chester Borough

With its picturesque Main Street and scenic rolling

hills, Chester captures the hearts of many visitors.

Chester and the surrounding Chester Township date

back to 1799. Visitors love its quiet village life and

quaint country charm, which has been preserved

and protected by the Historic Chester Business Chester Borough

Association and municipal ordinances that have

dedicated open spaces to prevent any encroaching

suburban sprawl. Chester has over 100 small,

independently owned stores, and offer a variety of

annual events that delight visitors every season.

6. Washington Township and Long Valley

Long Valley, an unincorporated community within

Washington Township, was originally known as

“German Valley” thanks to its original settlers from

Saxony, Germany back in 1707. A group of German

Protestants traveled with their Dutch counterparts

to the New World in search of religious freedom

but opted to forego their original plan to settle in

what is now New York City once they discovered

Washington Township’s stunning farmland. Later

on, Schooley’s Mountain (America’s earliest summer

resort) attracted vacationers for its mineral springs

and iron-rich waters, reputed to heal all types of

ailments.

7. Wharton

Wharton (once called Port Oram) was a stop on

the famous Morris Canal, which stretched from

Phillipsburg to Newark, transporting anthracite

coal from Pennsylvania to the Hudson River. Today,

Wharton is home to Picatinny Arsenal, which has

been an important army research and development

center since 1880. The town’s namesake, industrialist

Joseph Wharton of Philadelphia, founded The

Wharton School of Business at the University of

Pennsylvania.

2. Morris County Courthouse Court StreetBuilt in 1827, this is the county’s third courthouse, and one of the best examples in New Jersey of a public building in the Federal style. For many years, bells rang from the belfry to signal the start of court and to alert the town in case of fire. The wooden Lady Justice above the front entrance holds a scale to symbolize the fairness of the

judicial system and a sword to represent the protection of individual rights. Note she is not blindfolded. Court Room One has been preserved to look as it did in 1827.

3. First Baptist Church 51 Washington StreetWhile Morristown’s second oldest congregation was established in 1752, this marks the church’s fourth building. Built in 1892, the church was originally located on the Green, where it served as a smallpox hospital.

4. Arnold’s Tavern Plaque 20 North Park PlaceA plaque marks the former site of Arnold’s Tavern, built in 1764. It served as Washington’s headquarters during the winter of 1777. Speedwell is the Factory Building, a National

Historic Landmark. Here Stephen Vail’s son,

Alfred, worked with Samuel F.B. Morse to

conduct the first successful demonstration of the

telegraph on January 11, 1838 to the public.

2. The two inventors transmitted a message

through two miles of wire; the message came

from a county judge who wrote, “A patient

waiter is no loser,” on a piece of paper. Three

floors of hands-on, interactive exhibits take you

through the development of the telegraph and to

its connections to modern telecommunications.

3. The L’Hommedieu House was relocated from

its original site elsewhere in Morristown. The

gambrel roof and recessed doorway now lead to

the Friends of Historic Speedwell Gift Shop and

an exhibition and orientation space.

4. The Vail family lived in the Vail Homestead

from the 1820s to the early 20th century. The

furnishings provide excellent insight into 19th

century life. Portraits of Stephen and Bethiah

Vail, painted by Samuel F.B. Morse in 1837, are

among the artistic highlights.

Morristown National Historical Park consists of four non-contiguous areas: Washington’s Headquarters, Fort Nonsense, Jockey Hollow, and the New Jersey Brigade Area (which includes the Cross Estate and Gardens).

1. Ford Mansion at Washington’s headquartersThe well-preserved Ford Mansion was originally built in 1772. It served as General Washington’s military headquarters for six months during the winter of 1779-80. Today, visitors can tour the mansion and grounds to view the home’s intricate furnishings and astounding 18th century décor much as it was in Washington’s days.

The Ford Mansion is one of the park’s two original structures. This historic mansion is set on 16 acres of land along with the Washington’s Headquarters Museum.

Washington’s headquarters MuseuMThe winter of 1779-80, the most severe of the century, brought great suffering to the Continental Army in Morristown. General Washington demonstrated his leadership by holding the army together and creating a cohesive, united front. It was one of his greatest triumphs, and history fans can learn all about it at Washington’s Headquarters Museum through an introductory video and four exhibit galleries, including the new interactive “Discover History Center.”

2. Jockey holloW Visitor centerThere are approximately 27 miles of walking trails in beautiful Jockey Hollow. The staffed visitor center has a furnished full-scale soldier hut display, information on the natural aspects of the park, and a large wall mural depicting the 1779-80 encampment. Visitors can then hike up to the replica soldier huts to see them in person.

The 1750 Wick House in Jockey Hollow is the second of two original structures in the park. The Wick House is set up today just as it was when it served as the headquarters for Major General Arthur St. Clair in the winter of 1779-80.

3. Fort nonsenseWashington’s troops built this fort in the spring of 1777, on what was then called Kinney’s Hill. Its purpose was to protect the main roads leading north and south in order to preserve Morristown as a military storehouse. Seven exhibits and a small monument now commemorate the structure, which was never used as a fort.

4. cross estate gardensEntering the impeccably landscaped gardens of the Cross Estate is like going back in time – to the early 20th century, in fact, when Julia Appleton Newbold Cross hired landscape architect Clarence Fowler to redesign this serene property. Experience the grandeur of a lifestyle that no longer exists by walking through these formal, walled gardens. Take the path bordered by mountain laurel and stroll beneath the wisteria-covered pergola for a perfect afternoon.
