LEARN MBCI students learn in ways that prepare them well for success in post-secondary study and in the workplace; they also learn in ways that shape the development of their character.

MBCI seeks to nurture the whole child - spiritually, academically, emotionally and physically. Students develop understanding as well as knowledge; are provided with encouragement and support alongside rigorous and creative learning experiences.

We believe passionately in designing and providing learning that cultivates a growth mindset - challenging students to grow as problem-solvers, as well as to pursue deep understanding and mastery of content.

“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11

LOVEMBCI is a Christ-centered school, focused on the practices and values of a Christian community. Our faith shapes and guides everything that we do, including valuing and caring for each student as a beloved child of God.

Our teachers and staff are committed to creating an atmosphere in which every student belongs; where students build meaningful relationships with peers and mentors; and where they learn to look beyond themselves, towards the many ways they can serve and care for others and the world around them.

ENGAGEMBCI students engage - with curriculum content, with their peers, with the culture that surrounds them, and with the broader community.

We ask this of our students because learning that engages will help them develop the ability to be global citizens; to build strong friendships and connections; and to find their voices as leaders.

Engaging with the world requires curiosity, innovation, problem-solving and collaboration - values that provide the focus and framework in which MBCI students learn and thrive.

WHY MBCI? MBCI is a Christ-centered middle and secondary school, equipping students to learn, love, and engage with the world.

Page 3: 2020 - 2021 VIEWBOOK · “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11. LOVE. MBCI is a Christ-centered school,

COMMUNITYI have a strong commitment to working with others as stewards of the world. I am a community-minded citizen who places priority on collaboration and developing relationships. I remain engaged and connected to the work of caring for our environment and those in need.

MBCI invites students to develop the kinds of habits that will enable them to practice our values: to learn, love, and engage with the world around us. These habits help teachers frame and measure student learning, and ultimately, the thoughts, words, and actions practiced by our graduates characterize them in distinct ways.

LEARNING & GROWTHI have a growth mindset rooted in a foundational love of learning that will remain with me my entire life. I am able to solve problems in creative and innovative ways, thinking critically and with discernment in any situation.

FAITHI have a clear understanding of what it means to live a Christ-centered life, based on the teachings of Jesus. I am able to move into the world with compassion for all, because of the faith modeled by my teachers, and it fosters the passion I have for serving others.

LEADERSHIPI have developed the character and skills necessary to lead with integrity. I am able to communicate effectively in a way that positively influences those around me, and I have a resilience that enables me to take on difficult challenges.

LEARNING AND GROWTHLearning at MBCI is innovative, rigorous, and creative. We are committed to an inquiry-based, student-centered approach - students and teachers work together, pursuing in-depth exploration and mastery of content.

MEANINGFUL & RELEVANTMBCI teachers support students in pursuing “real work for a real purpose”. When learning is relevant - when it connects to the real world - students are equipped to see the purpose behind their work; they are more likely to gain mastery of skills and concepts because they feel a greater degree of investment and ownership in their learning. Whenever possible, students are asked to apply their work and learning to a context outside of the classroom. When they look to an audience beyond the teacher, students have the opportunity to grow as communicators, in interpersonal skills, and in creativity.

COLLABORATIVE & INNOVATIVEThe study and work environments in which students will find themselves after graduation will require them to work together in teams and to have the ability to solve problems in new ways. Learning at MBCI is designed to equip students with this skill set as they collaborate with their peers, with students in other grades, and occasionally with industry experts. Students grow as innovators when they are given the opportunity, through projects, to design their own solutions to real-world questions and problems.

RIGOROUS & DIVERSEMBCI values each student’s unique contributions to their collective learning and growth. We are committed to maintaining our classrooms as spaces where students of different skills and passions interact and where we value the development of each student’s character. Students will experience a high level of expectation, but also a high level of support. It is critical for the success of our students - both now and in the future - that they are able to learn and work in a diverse community, and where they experience a variety of approaches to teaching and learning.

Most of our middle school students have one teacher for core subjects allowing for a natural flow of learning. The small class size of our middle school homerooms cultivates a safe community environment that supports students in holistic ways - teachers are able to keep a caring and careful eye on social dynamics, emotional needs and learning goals.

Our learning spaces are environments that inspire creativity, support collaboration, and are designed to meet different learning needs and styles. Chromebooks and innovative furniture are just a couple of the ways that the classroom is being re-imagined.

Our middle school students participate in innovative programs which incorporate STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) learning, digital citizenship, coding, robotics, design process and service learning. These programs are designed to foster a growth-mindset and a love of learning.

Our middle school experience from grades 6 - 8 builds the foundation for students to face the challenges of high school and beyond. Students learn through opportunities and in spaces specifically designed to help them become learners who are curious, brave and resilient.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

STAR 6 Once a month, all of our grade 6 students gather for collaborative learning where they are challenged to continue discovering what they are passionate about. Engaging and interactive, STAR 6 days are highly anticipated learning opportunities that equip students to become innovators and problem-solvers.

CONNECT 8 Grade 8 students are introduced to Multiple Intelligences theory as a way of helping them appreciate and understand the full range of abilities and talents that they, and their peers, possess and can develop. Students participate in activities designed to help them discover more about how they learn and how they can grow their potential and contribute to the world.

GENIUS HOUR Grade 7 students participate in Genius Hour once a month. This is an opportunity for students to develop “passion projects”; taking their problem-solving and design skills to the next level. Students are coached by their teachers in applying their own questions and design to topics of their choosing; they grow as learners who can collaborate, communicate, and think critically and creatively about any academic challenges that come their way.

HIGH SCHOOLMBCI’s high school experience from grades 9 - 12 is designed to provide the challenges and opportunities necessary for students to develop their passions while practicing the skills and habits that will open doors to their future.

• As an important transition year into high school, MBCI takes care to design opportunities for grade 9 students that serve as a foundation for the social and academic growth yet to come.

• Early in the school year students participate in a welcome retreat to help them build connections and a feeling of belonging.

• We offer a wide range of grade 9 course options so that students can begin to explore their interests and gifts.

• Knowing that technological literacy will be critical to their academic success, all grade 9 students take ICT (Information and Communications Technology) as a foundation for their learning in high school and beyond.

GRADE 9 BELONGINGPROJECT BASEDLEARNING MBCI is committed to shaping a school

environment in which all students can find their place. Teachers are interested not only in successful academic outcomes, but also in the cultivation and formation of character and faith. Students have a wide range of options through which to build a sense of community and belonging: all students are members of School Life Groups (SLGs); sports teams work hard together while also building relationships; co-curriculars such as Model United Nations, Chess Club and Jazz Band offer a safe place for students to build community with others who share their interests.

Throughout their MBCI experience, rigorous and relevant opportunities for Project Based Learning will invite students to grow as resilient and curious learners. Projects equip students to question and evaluate information, take ownership of their learning, and share their learning in a meaningful way. As students progress through grades 9 - 12, projects will increase in complexity in a way that equips students to develop the skills and understanding that are in demand after graduation.

Faith formation is intentional throughout our programs at MBCI.

Our Biblical Studies courses invite students to see, understand, and live in a new way. Students will graduate well-rooted in biblical literacy and in the history and life of the church. Bible classes place a special emphasis on service, discipleship, and community, rooted in our Anabaptist tradition, which we believe is important to share with our students.

As a part of our commitment to the faith formation of our students, we invite them to lead chapels through participation in worship teams, dramas, and sharing of personal experiences and class projects.

SERVICE LEARNINGService learning happens throughout the school year, both independently and within each grade level. Middle School students engage in service as a class with their teachers, introducing them to organizations through which they may be interested in serving as they transition into high school and on in to adult life.

High School students take their practice of service a step further and are asked, as part of their biblical studies requirements, to complete 15 hours of volunteer service during the year.

Students are encouraged to look at every subject matter from a Christian perspective and ask questions in a safe and caring environment.FAITH

Page 12: 2020 - 2021 VIEWBOOK · “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11. LOVE. MBCI is a Christ-centered school,

Alongside a staff mentor, students are encouraged to explore starting a club, coaching a team, organizing intramurals and more. By helping to lead school events, students learn organization skills, develop character and discover new ways of building community. In addition to involvement in Student Council or League of Leaders (middle school leadership) all students are encouraged to find a way to plug in!

Every student has a voice. Our goal at MBCI is to walk alongside students in developing the character and skills necessary to discover and raise their voices with integrity.

LEADERSHIP

We encourage our students to practice listening and discernment, knowing that effective leadership is best communicated in the context of relationships and servanthood. Within this environment, students can then grow as individuals who seize opportunities to speak for justice and the common good; who stand up for the things in which they believe; who call forward and celebrate the voices of others.

We expect more from our students, and we work to build in them the capacity to meet these expectations, confident that they can develop the resilience needed to take on difficult challenges and to make a difference both today and for the future.

Our diverse school community promotes values of inclusion, understanding and learning. It is a source of support and encouragement as well as a place to belong, share ideas and learn to live out the practices of Christian community.

PARENTS Parents play a central role in the MBCI community. From being active in the Parent Advisory Council, Parents of Prayer, volunteering through the parent group Plugged In, and giving towards school-initiated fundraising projects, parents at MBCI are making a difference.

We welcome the parent voice at MBCI which adds a valuable perspective on how we can continue to work together to provide the best educational experience.

STUDENTS Students will find community at MBCI through meaningful opportunities to join other students in clubs, activities, and special events. The teaching and learning that happens in our classrooms, our weekly chapels, and our school life groups is centered on understanding what it means to be a community of learners, how to welcome others, and the importance of respect, care and valuing one another despite our differences.

ALUMNI Over 6,000 MBCI alumni include professionals spanning the world, community leaders and successful entrepreneurs. Generations of graduates have achieved their personal best and are making meaningful contributions to our community and the world.

Our thriving alumni community continues to strengthen our school. This is evident in the impact they have on our day to day activities and through their support: both financially and at school events.

The MBCI community is a place where students can connect and feel part of something bigger than themselves.COMMUNITY

DEVELOP CHARACTER THROUGH CO-CURRICULAR EXPERIENCES Students at MBCI are taught to cultivate practices that allow them to become life-long learners, deeply engaged in understanding the world around them. Learning beyond the classroom is an integral part of our program where students have the opportunity to be a part of clubs, study tours, competitive athletic teams and music groups. In keeping with our learning approach, these types of experiences foster the connections we hope for our students and help to develop their character and identity.

Getting involved beyond the classroom is key to making new friends, learning new skills, growing confidence, having life-changing experiences and expanding one’s worldview.

By participating in musical productions, concerts and dramas, students develop excellent performance skills. Getting involved promotes teamwork, builds confidence and gives students a life-long appreciation of performing arts.

The bonds which develop over time provide a strong community for students and build friendships that last a lifetime. Many students are part of unique mentorship relationships which are developed between our high school and middle school students resulting in authentic leadership and growth opportunities.

Each student is invited to explore the connection between artistic expression and the Christian faith

MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTSThe tradition of music and performing arts at MBCI runs deep in our community and being part of it offers a rich and rewarding experience.
