ACADEMICS
Achievement is the sole item recognized in determining the grade. Personal characteristics, character, conduct, personality, etc., affect the grade only insofar as they are reflected in the quality of achievement. Evaluation is based upon attainment of the instructional and performance objectives assigned the student. These objectives may include daily assignments, homework, quizzes, class participation, projects, tests, and examinations. Nine weeks grades are a composite of all evaluations made during a marking period.

RIVERSIDE HIGH SCHOOL HONOR CODE
INTRODUCTION
Riverside High School is an academic community that values respect, responsibility,
trustworthiness, fairness, citizenship and care for others. We expect members of our school
community to be honest, independent in their work, trustworthy, respectful of peers and staff and
responsible for their actions and choices. Like all other communities, Riverside can function
properly only if its members adhere to clearly established goals and values. Essential to the
fundamental purpose of Riverside is the commitment to the principles of truth and academic
honesty. Accordingly, the Honor Code is designed to ensure that the principle of academic honesty
is upheld. While all members of Riverside share this responsibility, the Honor Code is designed so
that special responsibility for upholding the principle of academic honesty lies with the students.
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside
15
DEFINITIONS
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: any of the following acts, when committed by a student,
shall constitute academic dishonesty:
(a) CHEATING: intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials,
information, or study aids in any academic exercise.
(b) FABRICATION: intentional and unauthorized falsification or invention of any
information or citation in an academic exercise.
(c) FACILITATING ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: intentionally or knowingly
helping or attempting to help another to violate any provision of this Code.
(d) PLAGIARISM: intentionally or knowingly representing the words or ideas of
another as one’s own in any academic exercise.
HONOR PLEDGE
1) On every examination, paper or other academic exercise not specifically exempted by
the instructor, the student shall write by hand and sign the following pledge:
I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized
assistance on this assignment/examination.
Failure to sign the pledge is not an honor offense, but neither is it a defense in case of
violation of this Code. Students who do not sign the pledge will be given the opportunity
to do so. Refusal to sign must be explained to the instructor. Signing or non-signing of
the pledge will not be considered in grading or further procedures. Material submitted
electronically should contain the pledge, submission implies signing the pledge.
2) On examinations, no assistance is authorized unless given by or expressly allowed by
the instructor. On other assignments, the pledge means that the assignment has been
done without academic dishonesty, as defined above.
3) The pledge is a reminder that at Riverside High School students carry primary
responsibility for academic integrity because the meaningfulness of their diploma
depends on it. Faculty is urged to emphasize the importance of academic honesty and
of the pledge as its symbol. Reference on syllabi or course policies and procedures to
the pledge and to this Code is encouraged.
PROCEDURES
1) Any faculty member of the Riverside community who has witnessed an apparent act of
academic dishonesty, or has information that reasonably leads to the conclusion that
such an act has occurred or has been attempted, shall notify the administration
promptly in writing.
2) The administration or its designee shall review the information with the faculty member
complainant and determine if there is a Level 1, 2, or 3 violation committed as part of
the case at hand.
3) Please refer to the information below to view specific examples of Levels 1, 2, and 3
violations alongside their consequences.

ATTENDANCE CLICK HERE FOR 100% DISTANCE LEARNING ATTENDANCE PROTOCOL
Absence from school for any period of time will result in the loss of learning. It is important for each student to be present whenever possible to take full advantage of educational opportunities. Students are required to make up work missed, regardless of the reason for absence.
PHONE-IN LINE
Parents are requested to use the ParentVue submission process identified in the link above to notify the school of an absence. If the parent has not notified the attendance office on the day a student is absent, the school will make every effort to call the parent to verify the absence. Any absence not confirmed by the parent will be considered unexcused.
Procedures
If no parent notification via ParentVue is made on the day of the absence, the following
forms of communication to excuse the absence are permitted:
➢ A note signed by the parent is delivered via e-mail to the attendance secretary
➢ A phone call from the parent to the attendance office/hotline (703-554-8902)
➢ A note from the student’s physician is e-mailed to the attendance secretary
*These methods are permitted so long as the parent has not already received a letter from school administration requiring medical notes for all absences/tardies/early dismissals. See the section below titled RIVERSIDE ATTENDANCE 101 for more details.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
• (1) Personal illness
• (2) Death in the family
• (3) Medical appointments
• (4) Court appearances
• (5) Illness in the immediate family that requires the student to be absent
• (6) Emergencies to be approved by the principal
• (7) Trips or activities that enhance or extend the student’s education, when approved by the school administration in advance
EARLY DISMISSALS AND RETURNS TO SCHOOL (IN-PERSON SETTING)
Students may only be dismissed during the school day for one of the reasons listed under excused absences. Students must follow the procedures listed below:
• A written request signed by the parent or guardian is to be submitted by the student to the attendance office before 12:00 PM. Students without notes may have parents/guardians e-mail a handwritten photograph of the note, but processing time may take up to an hour to provide the early dismissal pass. These requests must be approved by the attendance secretary and possibly administration before a student is permitted to leave. The request must include the telephone number where a parent may be reached during the day.
• The student will be given an early dismissal pass that includes the early dismissal information intended to permit the student to leave class, come to the attendance office, and sign out.
• After 3:45 PM, walk-in early dismissals will not be accepted. If the student has a medical appointment or other obligations, the parent/guardian must send a handwritten note or email with a handwritten photograph of the note.
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside
18
• Emergencies: Only in emergencies should the parent call the school and ask for the dismissal of the student. In such cases, the parent must come to the school to sign the student out.
• All students approved for early dismissal must bring their early dismissal slips to the attendance window and sign out before leaving. If the student returns, then the student must sign in at the attendance office and receive a pass to return back to class.
• Students who return to school from a medical appointment must have a signed physician’s note. Any student in this situation who wishes to participate in an extracurricular activity after school must have the written consent of the physician in the note.
STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES CENTER RELEASE (IN-PERSON SETTING)
• Students must sign out from the nurse in the student health services center, located outside of the main office. If students are feeling ill, they should report to the student health services cen-ter with a pass from their teacher and the nurse will make parent contact, if necessary.
• Students must have their release from school approved by the nurse and/or an administrator prior to signing out from the student health services center with their parent present at the time of dismissal.
PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCES
A pre-arranged absence is one which is authorized by the parent or guardian and preceded by completion of a form located on the school website or found in the school attendance/counseling office. Class periods or school days missed can never be fully recovered. The school's obligation is to encourage excellent attendance and inform the student and family of anticipated consequences of absence for personal or family business. The school encourages scheduling these activities at times which will not require absence from school. The prearranged absence form should be obtained and the process begun for approval at least fifteen (15) days prior to the student absence unless there is a state of emergency requiring absences.
RIVERSIDE ATTENDANCE 101
At the end of each month, the RAMT (Riverside Attendance Matters Team), composed of the school administration, school counselors, school nurse, attendance secretary, school psychologist, school social worker, and regional attendance officer, meets to discuss the attendance of all students. The goal of RAMT is to support student success academically, socially, and extracurricularly by promoting consistent school attendance.
➢ Students who have missed 15% or more of the entire school year up to the threshold date are reviewed more in depth at each monthly meeting in terms of their reasons for absences as well as their academic and disciplinary records.
➢ Based upon the RAMT review of the student’s current year attendance record, academic performance, and disciplinary record, the school administration reserves the right to require signed medical documentation for excessive tardies, absences, and/or early dismissals. Previous year attendance history may also be considered.
o A phone call accompanied by a letter from the student’s assistant principal will be delivered via US mail should such medical documentation be required.
o Medical documentation to excuse student tardiness, absences, or early dismissals must specifically delineate that the student was unable to attend school on a given date or by a particular time.
o A student who is examined by the school nurse and deemed unable to attend school may be given an excused absence via communication to the attendance office and school administration.
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside
19
➢ The Code of Virginia requires that the attendance officer be contacted upon the 5th unexcused absence from school.
o After a pupil has been absent for five days without indication of the parent’s awareness and support of such absence, principals or their designees are required to make a reasonable effort to ensure that direct contact is made with the parent to obtain an explanation for the nonattendance and explain to the parents the consequences of continued nonattendance.
-State Superintendents Memo Number 185
o Students who have five (5) unexcused absences will be required to present a signed physician’s note declaring that the student was unable to attend school to the attendance office for each subsequent absence to be considered excused. A phone call accompanied by a letter from the student’s assistant principal will be delivered via US mail should such medical documentation be required for future absences. The attendance officer will be notified of the situation and the parent will be informed of the consequences of continued nonattendance. Please note that a death in the family, court appearances, or other special circumstances approved by school administration may be considered as excused absences without medical documentation.
TARDY PROTOCOL
The regular school day begins at 9:00 AM. Students are expected to be in class on time. Excused tardies are issued for the same reasons as excused absences. If students arrive to school without a parent/guardian using one of the following methods to excuse the tardy, they have 24 hours to do so or else the tardy will remain unexcused.
- Submit on the Google Absentee Reporting form or via ParentVue

The Riverside Tardy Protocol has been developed to emphasize the importance of each student being in the classroom for the entire period, as well as arriving on time to school every day. Learning the responsibility of being in class on time is an integral part of Riverside’s standard of excellence, which prepares students for success. During the first ten (10) days of school, all teachers will be working with their students, focusing on organization and arriving to class on time, or early, every day. This tardy protocol will be effective beginning Tuesday, September 22, 2020. Tardies are cleared at the start of each semester.
The student responsibility is to consistently improve personal efficiency in utilizing passing time, planning the quickest route while still moving safely with the hall traffic. Teachers will encourage students and parent(s)/guardian(s) will support students, but it is still the student’s responsibility to be on time or early. Students may not come to a classroom, drop off materials, return to the hallway for any other reason, and come to class late. This would be a tardy to class.
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside
20
The teacher responsibility is to encourage students to discover the best routine for the most efficient use of passing time. Teachers will be standing at the classroom door to supervise students during passing time and to encourage students to be punctual to class.
The parent/guardian responsibility is to discuss this protocol with the child, reinforcing the student’s ability to meet this responsibility of learning promptness, and supporting the necessity for the school’s establishing immediate consequences to prevent chronic tardiness.
Students who choose to drive to school cannot use car trouble, construction, traffic accidents, etc. as an excused tardy to school because bus transportation is provided. You can never be tardy to school if you ride LCPS provided transportation.

STUDENT SERVICES
STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES CENTER (IN-PERSON SETTING)
The school student health services center is open from 8:45 AM – 4:15 PM. Students that are ill
must see the nurse before leaving school. The nurse will contact parents or guardians before
sending a student home (including students 18 or older). Students may expect to remain in the
student health services center no more than one period. It is vital that each student have a
completed emergency card on file in the student health services center in the event it becomes
necessary for the school to contact the parent during the day or transport the student by a rescue
vehicle. Emergency Cards can be found, completed, and/or updated on ParentVue.
1. VISITS TO THE NURSE: All students are to follow the procedures listed below as well as
procedures set forth by the school nurse:
If a student becomes ill, the student is to report to his/her schedule class and secure a
WRITTEN PASS from the teacher.
EMERGENCIES: Only in an emergency is the student to report to the student health
services center during the change of classes.
If a student has a health problem, which may necessitate frequent visits to the student
health services center, the parent should contact the school nurse. Faculty/staff will be
notified of such necessities.
A student who is ill must never leave school without being dismissed by the school
nurse or an administrator.
Students 18 years or older who live with their parents/guardians will need parental
permission for dismissal from the student health services center.
2. MEDICATION:
ALL REQUIRED MEDICAL PAPER WORK MUST ACCOMPANY STUDENT MEDICATION
All student medication (prescription or over the counter) must be checked into the student health
services center by a parent or guardian. This includes cough drops. Medicine administered at
school will strictly follow the Loudoun County Public Schools’ policy for medication administration.
Any student who fails to follow the procedures or whose parents fail to follow them will be excluded
from school until compliance is assured. The principal shall determine whether or not there is a
compliance with the provision for this policy.
Students may not carry or keep medications in their pockets, sports bags, book bag, and purses or
otherwise on their person.
If medication must be given at school the following procedures must be followed:
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside
23
Prescription and Over the Counter Medication
Medication must be brought to the school in the original container with the appropriate label
attached. Parent/guardian must bring the medication to the nurse, health aide or designee.
Medication will be kept in a locked medicine area in the student health services center. All
prescription medicine MUST be in the original pharmacy bottle with the proper label containing the
students name, medication dosage, and instructions for administration. If you ask the
pharmaceutical staff where medicine is received, they will give you an extra bottle with the proper
amount for school. In order to give medication to your student in school a Medication
Administration form must be filled out.
For prescription medication the following information must be included:
• Student name
• Name and purpose of medication
• Dosage and time of administration
• Possible side effects and measures to take if these occur
• End date for administering the medicine
• Parent signature giving permission to administer the medication and to contact
physician if needed.
• Physician signature
If your child takes a prescription medication and missing a dose would have serious health
consequences (seizure medication, insulin, etc.) it is strongly suggested that a 24-hour supply of
the medication be left in the school student health services center in case of a prolonged school
day. The medication must be in an original pharmacy-labeled bottle and have a physician's order
on file in the student health services center. The order must give the times during the 24-hour
period that the medication is to be administered.
If a child has a chronic disease that requires an emergency dose of life-saving medication be kept
at school, a statement from the attending physician on the type of medication, dosage, and method
of administration should be obtained and approved by the school nurse. Such medication must be
kept in a locked place, known by, and accessible to the principal, secretary, and school nurse. Any
deviation from this procedure must be approved by the school principal.
If your child is ill because of a contagious disease such as flu, strep throat, chicken pox, etc., it is
required to note the reason for the absence when you call the absentee call-line. This will help the
school take measures to know the extent of the disease and reduce its spread.
Students who have fevers should be kept at home until free of fever for 24 hours. Students who do
not feel well should stay home. When students come to school ill, they not only are unable to
participate fully in class, but they may also infect other students with their illness.

SCHOOL COUNSELING: THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
The professional school counselor is a certified/licensed educator trained in school counseling with
unique qualifications and skills to address all students’ academic, personal/social and career
development needs. Professional school counselors implement a comprehensive school
counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement. Their work is differentiated
by attention to developmental stages of student growth, including the needs, tasks and student
interests related to those stages. Professional school counselors serve a vital role in maximizing
student achievement. Incorporating leadership, advocacy and collaboration, professional school
counselors promote equity and access to opportunities and rigorous educational experiences for all
students. Professional school counselors support a safe learning environment and work to
safeguard the human rights of all members of the school community. Collaborating with other
stakeholders to promote student achievement, professional school counselors address the needs
of all students through prevention and intervention programs that are a part of a comprehensive
school counseling program and based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model:
foundation, delivery, management, and accountability.
1. ARRANGING A CONFERENCE (PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR COUNSELOR DURING DISTANCE LEARNING.)
Parents may schedule appointments with a counselor via a direct phone call or email. Parents are
encouraged to contact the counselor when questions arise about academic, personal, career, or
college concerns. When course concerns arise, we encourage the first line of communication to be
with the teacher via email or phone. Teachers will communicate with parents when there is a clear
indication of unexcused absences, unsatisfactory course work, or unacceptable behavior. Parent-
teacher conferences develop mutual understanding of various aspects of the student’s progress
and encourage cooperative planning toward effective solutions of existing problems. The
counselors wish to be available to meet student needs. This can be best accomplished by
scheduling an appointment in advance. Students can see their counselors before and after school
and during lunch (with a pass). Students must obtain a pass from their teacher to see their school
counselor during instructional time. If the counselor is not available, students can leave a note for
the counselor and the counselor will call for the student as soon as possible. Students may not
wait outside the counselor’s office without a pass. Contact information for counselors is
located on the Riverside HS website.
2. CAREER CENTER (PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR COUNSELOR TO ACCESS THE CAREER CENTER.)
The Career Center is adjacent to the Office of School Counseling and is open every school day.
The Career Center provides students with information to help them explore educational and career
options. The Career Center is a library of information on post-secondary education, financial aid,
career options, student volunteer and job opportunities. Printed reference materials, computer
software programs, and internet sites provide information on vocational/technical schools, two and
four-year colleges, graduate schools, civilian and military careers, and financial aid.
3. FAMILY CONNECTION (PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR COUNSELOR TO ACCESS FAMILY CONNECTION.)
We invite students to explore Family Connection by Naviance, a program that allows users to
investigate, research, track, and plan for the college admission process. FAMILY CONNECTION
may be accessed at home or school directly from the Riverside HS website.

CONFLICT MEDIATION
Students are advised to seek assistance from school personnel (teachers, administrators, counselors, etc.) in order to settle disputes peacefully, without violence or the threat of violence. School personnel will refer conflicts to student mediators or to staff mediation.
Fights are not mediated. Fights result in suspensions. However, students returning to school after suspension for fighting may be requested to participate in a restorative practice conference.
HOMEWORK REQUESTS (PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR TEACHER FOR HOMEWORK REQUESTS.)
Students should review Schoology to see their missed assignments. Students with academic concerns about work content may contact teachers with any questions. If a student has been absent three or more consecutive days, the student / parent / guardian may call the school counseling office to request missed work. Work request must be submitted by 9:00 AM for pickup in the school counseling office at 4:15 PM on the date of the request. Students are encouraged to complete the work and return to school ready to present it to the teachers from whom the assign-ments were requested. Serious illnesses will be handled individually on a case by case basis.
INTERIM GRADE REVIEW
Students and parent(s)/guardian(s) will be able to view interim grades on Phoenix for all courses each quarter on the interim dates announced via the THIS WEEK @ RIVERSIDE newsletter.
PEER STUDENT HELPER (PLEASE E-MAIL YOUR COUNSELOR TO ACCESS PEER SUPPORT.)
Students may seek help from a trained group of students. Services are kept confidential. Students can refer themselves or friends who have problems.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Special needs of students and parents should be brought to the attention of the administration and the appropriate school counselor. Riverside strives to meet the academic and medical needs of all students and to communicate effectively with all parents.
TRANSFER OR WITHDRAWAL
The parent or guardian should notify the student’s counselor and the school registrar in writing that the student is transferring or withdrawing from Riverside High School and should provide reasons for the release. The registrar will provide the necessary forms for obtaining student grades with teacher signatures, all of which should be returned to the registrar. All books should be returned to the main office and NOT to the individual teachers for the courses with which they relate. All financial delinquencies must be paid to the finance manager as well.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER (PLEASE E-MAIL OUR LIBRARIANS FOR LIBRARY REQUESTS

• Out-of-school guests are not permitted at informal dances.
• Any infraction of school regulations could result in suspension from all extracurricular activities or other appropriate disciplinary action.
• Once students enter the building for the dance, they must remain inside. Going out of the building means no re- entry.
• All out-of-school guests for formal dances must be registered and approved by the main office.
DISPLAY OF AFFECTION
Public displays of affection are not appropriate in a school setting.
DISTRIBUTION OF MATERIAL
Distribution of any non-school related material must be approved by the school administration.
No posters should be displayed in the school without administrative permission and signature of approval.
DRESS AND GROOMING
Proper dress and grooming are primarily the responsibility of the parent or guardian. However, the school has the responsibility to see that the cleanliness, dress, and grooming of students do not present a danger to the health or safety of themselves or their fellow students, do not prevent them from performing regularly required school activities, do not cause a disruption of the orderly functioning of the school, or do not cause excessive wear or damage to school property.
Certain rules concerning dress are needed for reasons of health, safety, and providing an atmosphere conducive to academic learning. The school staff and administration are responsible for determining the appropriateness of dress.
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside

All students who attend Loudoun County Public Schools are expected to dress appropriately for a
K-12 educational environment. A student’s attire should facilitate the participation in learning as
well as the health and safety of students. This policy is intended to provide guidance for students,
staff and parents.
Appropriate Student Attire. Students must wear clothing that is appropriate to a K-12 educational
environment and that does not or is not likely to cause a substantial disruption that includes the
following attire:
1. Clothing must cover the midriff.
2. Tops with straps greater than one inch wide.
3. Clothing that covers private areas should be opaque and appropriate undergarments must be
worn.
4. Clothing that does not reveal undergarments and/or private areas.
5. Clothing should be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities where unique hazards exist.
6. Clothing that is required in specialized courses, such as sports uniforms or safety gear.
7. Clothing that includes head covering if worn for religious purposes, as a matter of safety,
medical condition, or in connection with a school-sponsored program, activity, or event.
8. Faces should be clearly visible by other students and staff, as a reasonable measure of safety
and security.
9. Clothing free from language that is profane or images that depict, advertise or advocate illegal,
violent or lewd conduct, the unlawful possession or use of weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia,
alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances or are discriminatory.
10. Clothing and/or head coverings free from gang related or associated symbols, such as words
or drawings that could pose a reasonable threat to the health or safety of any other student or staff.
FIRE DRILLS (IN-PERSON SETTING)
During fire drills or any emergency evacuation, students are expected to remain with their assigned class, to proceed outside in an extremely quiet, orderly fashion, and to respond to roll when it is called.
LOCKDOWN
If the school experiences an intruder, a lockdown announcement will be announced on the public address system. All students and teachers must remain in their assigned classrooms. Students in the hallways should immediately enter the nearest classroom.
HALLWAYS (IN-PERSON SETTING)
As in the classroom, students are to be courteous, cooperative, pleasant, and positively supportive to everyone. The goal during class changes is to visit the restroom as needed and reach the next assigned location without remaining in hallways excessively. When faculty, staff, or administration advises students to proceed to class, they are required to do so without fail for their own safety and concern. Students are required to walk in the hallways and promote the well-being of all others around them. Students may not linger in hallways during class changes or at times when they are excused from class for any reason permitted by Riverside staff. Failure to comply with hallway regulations may result in referral to school administration for disciplinary consequences.

HOMEWORK
Homework is an important part of the formative assessment process. Homework will be implemented and fully employed by the teacher in the next class lesson for revision and reinforcement purposes.
Purposes of Homework:
• To practice skills introduced and developed in class
• To complete unfinished classroom assignments or projects
• To enrich the school program by pursuing activities that can be shared with classmates the following day
• To provide for independent study or projects
Individual departments will have specific homework protocols, which will meet the expectations and guidelines of the Loudoun County Public School Assessment and Grading policy. Teachers will discuss these protocols during the first week of school. Students are expected to complete assignments fully and on time. As homework is an integral part of the formative assessment process, failure to complete homework may cause a decline in academic performance.
MAKE-UP WORK DUE TO ABSENCE
UPON RETURN TO SCHOOL THE STUDENT AND TEACHER WILL DISCUSS ANY MISSED ASSIGNMENTS/ASSESSMENTS AND DESIGNATE A TIMELINE FOR COMPLETION.
• A reasonable time for students to complete missed work from a one-day absence is by the end of the subsequent next two class meetings after the student’s return to school from the absence.
• When a student has a prolonged absence, special consideration will be given for due dates.
• When a student is excused from classes for a school-related extra-curricular activity, the student must pre-arrange the completion of work missed for those sessions prior to the extracurricular activity taking place.
Completion of assignments/assessments is essential to student academic progress. Failure to complete make-up work may cause a decline in academic performance.
PASSES (IN-PERSON SETTING)
Students will not be in the halls without a pass. Students are to report to the location designated on the pass and no other locations without permission. All students must sign in and out on the appropriate clipboards housed in teacher classrooms. In addition, each teacher will have two laminated passes. Students will take these passes with them when leaving the classroom to visit the student health services center, restroom, locker, etc.
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside
36
SIGNING IN/OUT (IN-PERSON SETTING)
Students must sign out in the main office whenever they have an authorized early release, early dismissal, or student health services center release. Failure to do so could result in disciplinary action.
Students must also sign in when arriving to school tardy or when coming back from an early dismissal.
EXTRACURRICULAR PARTICIPATION AND
RESPONSIBILITIES
Good sportsmanship is characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others. Sportsmanship is evidenced by displaying understanding and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity. Riverside is committed to supporting and upholding the sportsmanship standards of the Virginia High School League which states “ACTIONS are to be FOR, NOT AGAINST; POSITIVE, NOT NEGATIVE OR DISRESPECTFUL”. Inappropriate behavior and actions will result in disciplinary action. Everyone is asked to commit to the standards of good sportsmanship. Athletic and extracurricular participants must comply with all expectations as specified in school, county, district, and VHSL policies. These expectations are reviewed by coaches and sponsors prior to the season or activity.
SPORTSMANSHIP CODE
1. Our opponents and the officials are our guests.
2. We cheer loudly and freely, but in an orderly manner.
3. We help keep this a game; we are opponents, not enemies.
4. Spectators represent their schools, as do the athletes.
EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENT PARTICIPANTS
• Treat opponents with respect; shake hands prior to and after contests.
• Respect the judgment of the officials.
• Accept the responsibility and privilege of representing the school and community seriously.
EXPECTATIONS OF SPECTATORS

• Respect decisions made by officials.
• Be a positive supporter of the team.
• Respect other fans, coaches, and participants.
VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE ELIGIBILITY

STUDENT RECOGNITION
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Membership in the National Honor Society is an honor and a responsibility. Students elected to membership are expected to consistently demonstrate the qualities of SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, and CHARACTER. The following information represents our chapter’s basic guidelines. Other guidelines may be applicable as listed in the student information packet supplied at the time of junior or senior eligibility.
During October, eligible students will be selected for membership in the Ram Chapter of the National Honor Society. A student who has been in attendance for at least the equivalent of one full semester at Riverside, is a member of the junior or senior class, and has met the minimum scholarship requirement of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average is eligible for consideration. All
Riverside High School Student Handbook 2020-2021 www.lcps.org/riverside
38
academically eligible students are then given the opportunity to complete information forms to submit for application to the National Honor Society Faculty Council. Students will have a designated amount of time to complete the information forms and turn them in by a due date and time announced by the NHS sponsor to be considered. As a minimum, each candidate must demonstrate full participation in at least two school activities, have verifiable community and school service, practice leadership through either elective office, positions of responsibility, or documented opportunities, and exemplify the highest standard of character. Membership in the National Honor Society is an honor, not a right, and is based upon outstanding achievement in each of the four areas mentioned. A Faculty Council consisting of faculty members selected by the principal has the duty of determining which academically-eligible students have met not only the minimum criteria, but have gone on to establish themselves as truly outstanding young people as demonstrated in the information forms supplied at the time of selection.
All students in NHS are expected to attend monthly meetings as scheduled at the start of the year, maintain their standards of selection, and to complete a specific quantity of quality service hours as determined by the organization’s leadership with support by the Faculty Council and school principal. NHS meetings are only subject to change in emergencies or by administrative approval. Officers are obligated to meet prior to the full NHS meeting as required by the NHS adviser. Any NHS student who misses three meetings throughout the course of the school year or who fails to complete the required service hours by the assigned due dates at the end of the first and/or second semesters may be dismissed from the organization by the Faculty Council.
