Welcome

American School of Nursing and Medical Careers is an accredited private vocational school with a long history of providing career education in the fields of nursing and allied health. We specialize in comprehensive programs that prepare our students for interesting and challenging positions in their chosen fields of study. American School of Nursing and Medical Careers’ programs are constantly reassessed so that we may continue to be responsive to the needs of the communities we serve. Studies done by the U.S. Department of Labor indicate that the demand for trained workers in these areas will continue to grow in the future.

Today, a high school education is considered only the bare minimum for employment. If you want more than an average job, a higher-than-average salary, and the potential to move up the ladder of success, you need the advanced education and skills that will make you an above average employee.

There was a time when a college degree was the only key to this success; today, the situation is different. It is not necessary to spend several years in college in order to be a part of one of the fastest growing career fields.

Our success is a result of the successful graduates who have benefited from our programs; the history of their achievements forms the foundation on which today’s student set their goals. The administration, faculty and staff, look forward to assisting you in attaining your goals. We hope you enjoy your educational experience while at American School of Nursing and Medical Careers.

HistoryAmerican School of Nursing and Medical Careers was founded in 1997, by Health Career Training Associates, LLC, as a small post-secondary proprietary school with a Nursing Assistant Program. The primary focus of the Health Career Training Associates School was a competency-based vocational program for nursing students. The Practical Nursing program was developed in 2002 and received approval by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing in February of 2003. In July of 2007, they gained accreditation through NLNAC (National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission), now called ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing). At that time, they changed the name of their school from HCTA to NESPN (New England School of Practical Nursing) to clearly identify its purpose in the title within the organization. In December of 2009, The New England School of Practical Nursing was purchased by Premier Education Group (PEG). The name of the school was changed to Salter School of Nursing and Allied Health and remained at the 60 Rogers Street location until February 2013. In February 2013, Premier Education Group relocated the campus to 670 N. Commercial Street, Manchester, New Hampshire within the historic Jefferson Mill Building. The change in location allowed the students additional classroom space, well-equipped labs and a pleasant neighborhood surrounding other schools of higher learning.

In 2019 it was renamed as American School of Nursing and Medical Careers. In June of 2020, Trigram Education Partners, LLC acquired the school.

Cancellation and Refund PolicyTuition & Other Charges - Period of ObligationFollowing the start of classes, the institution will establish a ledger of tuition and other charges incurred by the student, as shown on the front side of the enrollment agreement. Tuition charges, as outlined on page 53, will be applied in one or more parts called periods of obligation, depending on the length of the program. The period of obligation set by the school is 450 instructional hours. Programs less than 450 hours will have tuition charged in full in one part, while programs longer than 450 hours but equal to or less than 900 hours will have tuition charges applied across two periods of obligation, while programs greater than 900 hours will have tuition charges spread across three or more periods of obligation depending on how many 450-hour periods are needed. The institution, for the sake of clarity, will create a ledger card detailing the entire cost of the program with each period of obligation clearly marked so that the students can understand and verify the full and complete cost of the program as shown on the front side of this agreement. For the benefit of the student the institution will secure financial aid or complete financial planning to cover all periods of obligation. The student is obligated to pay the charges attributed to the period of obligation at the beginning of each period of obligation unless other financing arrangements have been made. By way of an example, a program with tuition costs of $9,100 that is 910 hours in length will have three periods obligation. The first two periods of obligation will be 450 hours in length, and appear on the ledger card as $4,500 charges, while the last period of obligation will be 10 hours in length and cost $100. By way of an example, if a student attending a 900-hour program was scheduled for 450 hours of classes and began the 451st hour, the student would be obligated for tuition charges relating to the first and second period of financial obligation.

Institutional Refund & Cancellation PolicyThe school will provide a full refund of all monies paid if the student cancels the enrollment agreement within 72 hours (until midnight of the third day excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and legal holidays) of signing it.

If the student pays any fees in advance of the first class session, and if the 72-hour cancellation privilege period has passed, and if the student decides not to attend the program by not showing for classes, or if the enrollment is rejected by the school, the school will refund all monies paid less the application fee.

If it becomes necessary for the class to be canceled or delayed prior to the start of classes, the student will have the option of accepting the delay and joining the next scheduled class start or requesting a full refund of all monies paid, including non-refundable application fee.

In the event of withdrawal by the student after expiration of the 72 hour cancellation privilege or dismissal by the school, the school shall retain the application and registration fees, the non-refundable cost of the textbooks required by the classes attended and issued to and used by the student, and a prorated portion of tuition and laboratory fees/other, based upon the last day of attendance and the number of program hours the student was scheduled for through the last day of attendance. The pro-ration is calculated as follows, from the last date of attendance: A. If the departure from the program occurs during the

first week of class or 7 calendar days, tuition charges withheld will not exceed 10 percent of the stated tuition to a maximum of $500.00.

Page 18: 2020 - 2021 Catalog · 2020. 7. 8. · 2020-2021 Catalog I . Manchester, NH . I . americannursinged.com. 5. History. American School of Nursing and Medical Careers . was founded in

18 americannursinged.com I Manchester, NH I 2020-2021 Catalog

B. After the first week of class and through 60 percent of the period of financial obligation, charges retained will not exceed a prorata portion of tuition for the training period completed, plus 10 percent of the unearned tuition for the period of training not completed, up to a maximum of $1,000.00.

C. After 60 percent of the period of financial obligation is completed, the school may retain the full tuition. We will return refunds within 30 days of date of determination of withdrawal or cancellation. The date of determination used for withdrawal or cancellation will be: 1. Withdrawal

a. Date the school received notification from a student of their intent to withdraw, or

b. The last date of attendance, if student is dismissed or expelled by school, or

c. 14 days following last day of attendance in the event the student has not communicated their intent to withdraw and has failed to attend classes for 14 consecutive calendar days.

2. Cancellation - In the case of a cancellation of enrollment due to a failure to attend or class delay or cancellation request, the date of notification or originally scheduled start date is used, whichever is sooner.

The tuition charges will be attributed on the basis of periods of financial obligation, as stated above, which is equivalent to 450 hours of training or the balance of training hours remaining in the program if less than 450 hours. In no case will the period of obligation for students extend more than 12 months, and in most cases the period of financial obligation (450 training hours) will be between 15 and 40 weeks in length. For a student who is dismissed or who withdraws from the program, refund of tuition due to the student for the period of financial obligation will be calculated by doing a detailed comparison between the Institutional and State refunds policies, if applicable. A refund will be issued according to whichever is more lenient to the student.

New Hampshire Disclosure1. All refunds shall be paid within 30 days upon

written notification from a student of cancellation or withdrawal; and

2. Students receiving benefits from federal programs shall be subject to the federal refund policies, rules, and regulations.

Academic Information

Maintenance of Academic RecordsStudent files are maintained by each respective department on campus while the student is in attendance. After leaving the school, the various parts of a students file are combined into one file which is maintained by the Education Department for a period of five years from the date the student leaves school. After this point, the official academic transcript is maintained indefinitely.

Measurement of InstructionThe unit of measurement of instruction is clock hours. A clock hour is defined as 60 consecutive minutes of which a minimum of 50 minutes is dedicated to instruction. An academic year is defined as 900 clock hours.

Course NumberingThe course numbering system uses an alpha numeric or letter identifier. The alpha portion of the number or letter identifies the subject area while the numeric portion determines the course difficulty level.

Leave of AbsenceAmerican School of Nursing and Medical Careers does not offer a leave of absence. Students who are unable to progress normally towards the completion of their program of study must be withdrawn, but are able to return based on the guidelines established in this catalog.

Student/Faculty RatioIn general, the average faculty to student ratio at American School of Nursing and Medical Careers is 1:38 for Lecture and 1:8 for Labs and Clinical.

The classrooms are designed to support this ratio.

WithdrawalIn the event of a student’s withdrawal or dismissal prior to completion of the program, the tuition charge will be computed as set forth in the Cancellation & Refund Policy, referred to in this catalog and fully explained on the back of the student enrollment agreement. A student will be expected to submit notification of his/her intent to withdraw and will be expected to complete an exit interview with the Education Department and Financial Aid Department. School property, including parking permit must be returned upon withdrawal. (Refer to policy on pages 42-43) If a student is actively enrolled in a course of study at the time of withdrawal, a “W” (Withdrawal) will be entered for the final grade of that course.

This withdrawal policy applies to all students including VA beneficiaries.

Re-EnrollmentAny student who has withdrawn from school, or has been dismissed, may request re-enrollment. The request is to be addressed to the director of the program and/or the Campus Director or his/her designee. The student must satisfactorily demonstrate that any problem that caused withdrawal or dismissal during the previous enrollment has been corrected. The re-enrollment process will require that the student meet directly with the Retention Committee, which includes the Campus Director, department or program leader, and Financial Aid Departments. Re-enrollment approval will be at the discretion of the Retention Committee and the student will be notified of their final determination. Should a student be accepted for re-enrollment, they will immediately enter a 30-day probationary period and be required to demonstrate acceptable academic progress.

Students Returning Within 180 Days from the Last Date of AttendanceA student who returns to school within 180 days from their last date of attendance (LDA) and enters into the same program at the same school will not be charged any additional fees. Also, they will not be responsible for any tuition increase that may have occurred. The returning student will be required to meet with Financial Aid prior to re-entering school to determine his or her financial aid eligibility.

Students Returning After 180 Days from the Last Date of AttendanceIf a student returns to school after 180 days from their last date of attendance (LDA) and/or transfers to a different program or campus, then the student will be considered to be starting a new payment period for purposes of calculating their program costs and financial aid. The institution treats the hours remaining in the program as if they are a students’ entire program. Also, the student will have their academic hours evaluated to determine the amount of hours that are transferable upon reenrolling. The student will be responsible for a new enrollment fee, lab fee, book and supplies fee, and any increase in tuition.

Change of ProgramIn order for a student to change from one program to another they must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress. The student must seek the approval of the director of the program and/or the Campus Director or his/her designee who will make the determination based on the student’s academic standing. The student’s transcript will be evaluated for the possible transfer of credits.

Program Start & End DatesThe Practical Nursing program has class starts approximately three times per calendar year. The learning begins immediately. Please refer to the Academic Calendar for start and end dates.

Clinical AssignmentsSome courses of study at American School of Nursing and Medical Careers require completion of a clinical assignment. During clinical the student will apply his or her knowledge and skills in an actual work setting while under the supervision of qualified personnel. Successful completion of the clinical is a requirement for graduation. Please note that clinical hours are arranged according to the needs of the clinical sites. Students are responsible for adjusting their schedules to the availability of clinical hours including weekends.

Competence with ConfidenceAt American School of Nursing and Medical Careers, success is based on competence. Courses are designed with built-in benchmarks that determine progress and monitor performance. Students are tested for their understanding of the subject before advancing to the next. Knowledge and skills are presented in appropriate time blocks that builds level- by-level, so that students achieve competence and confidence as each one is developed. Through our unique system, students will succeed with confidence, knowing that they are truly competent in the areas they have mastered.

TestingFaculty will test student knowledge at announced and unannounced times during the course. The grading policy for quizzes is written in the course syllabus. All exams are completed at the regularly scheduled time. A student may take any quiz, test, or exam one time only. It is the responsibility of the student to be prepared for all testing.

Note: Accommodations can be made for individual student testing differences according to 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Any student seeking an accommodation must make this request to the instructor before the start of the course and the request must be formally approved.

Students who are late to class may not be allowed into the classroom when a test is being proctored, out of respect for all students. Consistent tardiness to exams may lead to disciplinary action.

Make-Up WorkStudents are allowed to make up work, such as: quizzes, tests, writing assignments, skill assignments, and other work missed during didactic classes, labs, and clinical. To be eligible for make-up hours, a student must inform the school of his/her absence prior to the start of the first class scheduled for the day/evening school session. The make-up work must be relevant to the course work missed during the student’s absence and must be completed at the school or at the clinical site in the case where clinical work was missed. Make up time is dependent upon faculty and clinical site availability and may not automatically be available. The student must make up the time whenever convenient for the faculty and/or the clinical site. Students may only make up 10% of the clock hours for any course. 100% of lab and clinical hours must be completed in order for the student to successfully complete the lab/clinical courses with a passing grade. Student must obtain 85% attendance in the course or the student will receive a failed grade (F) and be withdrawn from the course.

(Example: In a 45 hour course, the student is able to make up 4.5 total hours (10%) and must attend a minimum of 38.25 hours (85% of course clock hours). Therefore, if a student missed 11.25 hours of the course, but made up 4.5 hours missed, they would achieve the minimum 85% attendance requirement for the course. However, if the student missed 11.25 hours that were all lab hours which are required to be attended at 100%, it would not be possible to pass the course because only 4.5 hours of the total hours missed could be made up.)

The student must receive a relevant make-up assignment from the course instructor. Make-up work must be completed as assigned by the instructor and must normally be completed within one week of the original due date. Holiday make up will be scheduled for holidays, please refer to the Holiday Calendar on page 54. Exceptions to the make up work policy are extremely rare and must be evaluated and approved by the Campus Director or Director of Nursing on a case-by-case basis.

1. Without exception, the student must notify the school on the day of absence

2. Upon returning to school, the student must see their instructor(s) to get permission to make up time. The absence hours will be discussed and documentation (court papers, doctor notes, etc.) should be presented

3. The instructor(s) complete the Make-Up Form including the assignment, outlining text material and research papers. If the student is going to take a test, the instructor(s) will mark their name on the test and supply directions if necessary, and leave the test with the make-up proctor

4. Upon completion of the hour(s) of make up, the make-up proctor will validate the Make-Up Work Documentation Form

5. The proctor will then forward the completed Make- Up Work Documentation Form to the Registrar for processing of attendance hours

6. The instructor(s) will be provided with the assignments for formal grading and evaluation

GradingThe following policies regarding grading apply to all students including VA beneficiaries.

Students are graded to evaluate their progress in terms of proficiency expected as employees within their respective fields. Grades may be determined through assignments, class work, tests, quizzes, lab skills, and final examinations. All course grades are recorded in the student academic record. Students are provided with their final grade for the course within five days of course completion. Students may request a grade report at any time from the Education Department.

At the beginning of each course or clinical experience, the student will be informed of the course or clinical objectives, the course outline, assignments, quizzes, tests, examinations, presentations, return demonstrations, and clinical performances expected. Inability to meet these expectations and maintain academic standards will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The student will be assisted through the Student Assistance/Remediation procedure. This procedure is intended to help the student resolve the issue, not to be punitive.

The following minimum academic standards must be met by all students including VA beneficiaries:• Achieve a minimum grade of 77% (letter grade of C+)

in all Practical Nursing courses• Achieve an Attendance Concluded “ATTCON” grade

in all clinical experiences• Attend at least 85% of total course hours• Attend 100% Skills Practice labs• Attend 100% Clinical Experiences at clinical sites

Letter grades are assigned numerical equivalents so that each student's progress may be reflected in terms of a grade point average (GPA). The GPA is a weighted average calculated by multiplying the term clock hours for each course by the grade point equivalent received for that course, summing the results, and dividing the sum by the total term clock hours. The school does not offer incomplete as a grade.

Numerical and letter grade equivalents are as follows:

Grade AppealStudents may appeal to the Education Department for review of their grades or academic status. The appeal must be made in writing within ten days of the grade determination. A designated committee consisting of the department directors and/or their designees will review all appeals. The committee’s decision will be final.

Course RepetitionsWhen a student, including a VA beneficiary receives an “F” (failed) grade in a course, the student will be required to repeat the class. The school may allow a student to continue within his/her current class as long as the class failed is not a prerequisite for subsequent courses that will be taken before the failed course is retaken. If necessary, the student’s program will be extended at no extra charge. American School of Nursing and Medical Careers recognizes that students may need to retake class/classes due to a failing grade. American School of Nursing and Medical Careers permits this to occur, however a student must understand the following:• When a class is retaken, both grades will appear on

the final transcript, however only the higher grade will be used to calculate the GPA on the final transcript

• In calculating GPA for a successful repeat of a course, the new grade will replace the old grade and the hours will not be included. However for determining minimum academic achievement and successful course completion, the amount of clock hours attempted will include both the first and second attempt of the class

• Financial aid eligibility may be affected. Therefore, it is the student’s responsibility to consult with a Financial Aid Advisor

• No additional tuition is charged for retaking a course. However, if a student retaking a course subsequently withdraws or is dismissed, all hours attended are used for calculation of the refund policy. Additionally, students will be responsible for purchasing textbooks and workbooks that have been updated

• A student may only fail and repeat the same course once unless there are extenuating circumstances that prevent the student from successfully completing the course

• Please note: failure of the clinical portion (90 hours) of PN101, PN102, and PN103 will result in failure of the entire course, and vice-versa.

Course EvaluationsAt the end of each course, students are asked to complete a confidential evaluation form. Comments are considered as part of the course/program review and quality assurance/improvement process.

Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress

Process Overview & ResponsibilitiesTrigram Education Partners schools employ proactive strategies for effective instruction, advisement, tutoring and intervention that effectively support each student’s academic achievement and advance students toward their career goals. Students are expected to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and progress toward graduation. Students are graded at regular intervals.

The Education Department is responsible for calculating SAP for each enrolled student according to the SAP Standards outlined in this policy and in the school catalog. The Financial Aid Office will review calculated SAP for each student to determine eligibility for financial aid.

Same As or Stricter ThanTrigram Education Partners schools employ an early intervention plan aimed at helping students achieve their best. To that end, the Education Department monitors academic success at the evaluation points outlined in the SAP policy and intervenes as appropriate to assist students at risk of not meeting SAP standards. Students who are at risk are evaluated at the evaluation points outlined in the SAP policy and are counseled by the Education Department. The Education Department works with at risk students to develop an academic plan. At risk students must be placed on a Plan for Academically Successful Students (PASS) that will help them achieve the standards necessary to meet SAP standards by their next official evaluation point. Official SAP calculations are evaluated only to coincide with the evaluation points outlined in the SAP policy. The SAP policy is applied to all students regardless of receipt of Tile IV Financial Aid. Students must maintain SAP to:

• Remain in their enrolled program• Remain eligible for Title IV Financial Aid

• To determine graduation

Qualitative MeasureAll students are expected to maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 2.67 at the mid point of each academic year and at graduation.

Quantitative MeasureAll students are expected to complete their program within 150 percent of the published length of the program. Quantitative progress is measured at the midpoint of each academic year.

Clock HourAn example would be a Practical Nursing program that consists of 1,200 clock hours. The maximum number of clock hours a student can attempt and still graduate is 1,800 based on 150% of the program.

Quantitative progress is calculated by dividing the cumulative number of clock hours the student has completed by the cumulative number of clock hours attempted. For transfer students, credits accepted for transfer towards the students program will count towards both the credit hours earned and credit hours attempted categories. Pace is measured at midpoint of each academic year as follows:• Upon completion of half the credit or clock hours and

weeks in an academic year (whichever is greater), cumulative pace must be equal to or greater than 67%

• Upon completion of the remaining credit or clock hours and weeks in the remainder of the academic year or remaining portion of a program, cumulative pace must be equal to or greater than 67%

Evaluation PeriodsTo ensure that students are making sufficient progress both quantitatively and qualitatively, SAP is officially evaluated at each mid point and end of each academic year.

The Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress on pages 24-26 apply to all students including VA beneficiaries

Failure to maintain SAPUpon determination that a student has not met the SAP requirements, they will be assigned one of three statuses. In all cases, these students will need to meet with an academic advisor to discuss their PASS plan.

Warning/Financial Aid Warning StatusStudents who fail to meet either the qualitative or quantitative standards outlined above at the first evaluation point of an academic year will be automatically placed on warning/financial aid warning for the remainder of the academic year. The student will receive notification of this status and will be encouraged to meet with the Director of Education/ Campus Director to discuss their PASS plan. Students, including VA beneficiaries on warning will remain eligible for financial aid and/or VA benefits for the remainder of the academic year. Students can not be placed on financial aid warning for more than one payment period.

SAP ProbationStudents in a “SAP Not Met” status will be notified in writing and given the opportunity to appeal. Successful appeal will change their status to “SAP Probation” and they will regain Title IV eligibility.

SAP Not MetStudents, including VA beneficiaries who do not meet the SAP benchmarks for a second consecutive evaluation will be placed in a “SAP Not Met” status. Students, including VA beneficiaries placed in a SAP Not Met status will be ineligible for Title IV aid and/or VA benefits. The student must meet with the Director of Education/Campus Director or designee within seven days to avoid potential dismissal.

AppealsStudents, including VA beneficiaries may appeal a determination they are not making SAP to the Director of Education/Campus Director or designee, to account for mitigating circumstances (i.e. family member’s death, illness etc.). To be eligible for an appeal, the Education Department must determine that the student will be able to meet SAP standards by the end of the academic year and develop a PASS plan which, if followed ensures the student will be making SAP by the specified point in time. Students who successfully appeal a SAP determination will be placed on SAP probation and will remain eligible for aid for the remainder of the academic year. Students who do not successfully appeal remain ineligible for aid. Students may only appeal once per program. Students must submit a written appeal to the Director of Education/Campus Director within seven calendar days of being placed in “SAP Not Met” status. The Director of Education/Campus Director will respond to all appeals within seven days of receipt of a request for SAP appeal. As with any Professional Judgment decision, appeals are only considered on a case-by-case basis, to account for unusual circumstances.

DocumentationAs with any use of Professional Judgment, adequate documentation is critical. A student who appeals must submit information explaining why he or she failed to meet SAP Standards, and what has changed in his or her situation which will allow him or her to make SAP by the next evaluation point.

Academic Success Plans - Re-Establishment of SAPStudents who successfully appeal a determination that he or she is not meeting SAP standards must work with the Director of Education/Campus Director to develop an Academic Success Plan. Academic Success Plans must be developed on a student-by-student basis and designed in such a way that, if followed, the student will be meeting SAP standards by the next evaluation period. Plans may be as simple as a mathematical calculation that specifies the percentage of coursework the student must complete or as detailed as a course by course plan toward certificate completion.

Regaining EligibilityA student not making SAP may re-establish eligibility for aid and SAP by meeting qualitative and quantitative components of the SAP policy.

Categories of StudentsStudents who are not recipients of Title IV aid are required to meet the standards of the SAP policy to remain in their enrolled program.

Failing GradesGrades of “F” are counted as hours attempted but not achieved and have a 0.0 value toward GPA. Repetitions of courses are counted as hours attempted. However, both the original clock hours and subsequent repetitions must be calculated as hours attempted in the successful course completion percentage. A student may only fail and repeat the same course once unless there are extenuating circumstances that prevent the student from successfully completing the course. Extenuating circumstances will be determined by the Campus Director and the VP of Accreditation and Regulatory Affairs. Repeated courses may adversely affect a student’s academic progress in terms of the maximum time frame, which is 150% of the published length of the program.

WithdrawalsWithdrawals are counted as attempted but not achieved. A student must withdraw from the entire program; a student cannot withdraw from a course. Students who withdraw from a program before the end of the term will be given a grade of “W”. Trigram Education Parners schools do not assign “Incomplete” grades to individual classes. When the student is given permission to re-enter the program, the determination is first made that the student will complete the program within the 150% timeframe. When a student reenters a program with less than a 2.67 CGPA, he/she will be put on Academic Advisement.

Change of ProgramAll attempted clock hours on any courses that are applicable will be counted as attempted clock hours in the new program.

Audited Courses/Review ClassesStudents auditing courses and/or reviewing classes will not earn a grade. Audited courses and review classes are not counted as hours attempted or achieved and are not graded.

Pass/FailPass/Fail courses will be counted toward the quantitative progress only.

NoticesUpdates to the Title IV SAP Policy will be published in updates to the Financial Aid Policy and Procedures Manual, school catalog, and other manuals as applicable.

Transfer/Proficiency CreditsTransfer and Proficiency credits, will be counted as hours attempted and hours earned, but will not be counted in the CGPA.

Remedial/Non-Punitive GradesWe do not offer remedial classes or classes with non- punitive grades. The school does not offer extended enrollment.

Attendance

Importance of AttendanceKnowledge and technical skills are best developed through being engaged in the learning environment and diligent practice. American School of Nursing and Medical Careers provides the environment, guidance, and continuous opportunities to learn and improve these skills through regular practice sessions. For this reason, all students are strongly urged to attend classes as scheduled. In order to successfully achieve the learning objectives of each course, satisfactory attendance is extremely important and required of all students. Student attendance records are maintained according to individual attendance schedules and become a part of each student's permanent file. As attendance and punctuality are of great concern to employers, students should always strive to maintain their schedule of attendance. A student should be punctual to class, come to class on a regular schedule, and submit their best work to the instructor. If potential employers contact the school for a reference, a good attendance record will certainly be in a student's favor when they apply for employment. Employers will pay as much for dependability as ability to perform the required technical skills.

Attendance PolicyStudent is required to:• Attend at least 85% of all didactic classroom

sessions, 100% skills practice labs, and 100% clinical experiences at affiliating agencies. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course/program.

• Complete all reading assignments prior to class. Student should plan to spend a minimum of 1 hour of studying for every 2 hours spent in the classroom.

• Arrive on time. All classes will begin promptly as scheduled. Out of respect to all students, students who are late for a class may not be allowed into the classroom until the first break

• Students must turn off cell phone/pager during class time

• Make appropriate arrangements for childcare and other family arrangements prior to beginning a course

• Schedule all medical or other personal appointments outside of class or clinical time

• Exercise judgment concerning attendance if the weather presents a risk to personal safety

• Exercise judgment regarding personal illness, or, follow the recommendations of her or his medical provider

• If the student is scheduled for a class and will not be present or will be tardy, the student must call the school at (603) 622-8400 and leave a message for the instructor. Email notifications are not acceptable. Reports will not be accepted from another student except in an emergency

• The student must notify by phone the clinical instructor and the school of any absence prior to the time that he/she is expected to report• Note: If the student is absent from class or clinical

and does not call in, he/she will be considered No Call/No Show and disciplinary action will be taken with possible suspension and/ or dismissal. Any quiz or assignment missed for that class will receive a zero grade

• Note: In the event of an absence of more than two days and/or a communicable disease, the student must present a signed clearance from her or his medical provider in order to return to class.

• The student is expected to arrive at all clinical sites 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the clinical. Tardiness may result in the student being sent home, at the discretion of the clinical instructor and/ or clinical site personnel. In that case, the student must make up the clinical time in order to pass the course and graduate. The opportunity to make up clinical time is dependent upon facility and instructor availability. If a student misses more than two days of clinicals, it may not be possible to arrange additional make-up days which would result in failure of the course.

The Attendance standards on pages 28-29 apply to all students including VA beneficiaries

Page 29: 2020 - 2021 Catalog · 2020. 7. 8. · 2020-2021 Catalog I . Manchester, NH . I . americannursinged.com. 5. History. American School of Nursing and Medical Careers . was founded in

Failure to Attend ClassesStudents who are absent for 14 consecutive days, resulting in an interruption of training, will be required to withdraw from active enrollment and re-enroll at a later date. Students should meet with Financial Aid and Education Departments personnel to understand the status and impact, such an absence may have upon their financial aid awards and academic progress.

PunctualityConsistent punctuality is just as important as regular attendance. Employers want to hire skilled workers who are capable of fulfilling their responsibility of arriving at work on time. Any time a student finds that he or she must be late or miss a scheduled class, the student should show the school the same courtesy that he or she would show an employer if going to miss or be late to work. When arriving to class late, be mindful that class is already in session. Enter the classroom quietly and with minimal disruption to fellow students and instructors. Out of respect to all students, students who are late for a class may not be allowed into the classroom until the first break.

TardinessStudents who are tardy or leave early will forfeit the actual time not attended. Students are expected to attend all classes as scheduled.

Military Obligation AbsenceAll military obligations will be honored. Upon the student's return, she or he is responsible for arranging time through the director of the program to meet with course faculty to review any materials that might have been missed, or to make up clinical days that have been missed. An extended absence may result in withdrawal from the program with re-entry to occur upon the students availability to return. If the student is required to leave prior to completing a course, the course(s) will be given a grade of W (withdrawal) and the student must repeat the courses upon return.

Online/Internet Acceptable Use PolicyInternet users enjoy certain rights and privileges, which include:

Safety: To the greatest extent possible, students will be protected from harassment and unwanted contact. Users should not give out their home address, phone number, credit card information or passwords. However, making the Internet available carries with it the potential that users may encounter information that some have identified as controversial and of potential harm. Because information on the Internet appears, disappears, and changes, creating a “safe, professional environment” is impossible, and implying that it is being done is a disservice to students and staff. The school’s focus is on providing the understanding and skills to use the Internet in ways appropriate to students’ educational and professional needs rather than on controlling the environment.

Responsibilities: This policy applies to online use by students and staff within American School of Nursing and Medical Careers. The purpose for going online for students is educational and students will be allowed to use the system limited to academic assignments.

Procedure: The student must have a signed online agreement on file. The student will show evidence

The program includes various clinical experiences, which may be offered on day, evening, or weekend hours as required by the clinical site. Graduates of the Practical Nursing program are required to pass the NCLEX-PN national examination in order to achieve licensure and obtain work as a Practical Nurse.

American School of Nursing and Medical Careers will provide each student with ATI’s Comprehensive Packages which include NCLEX preparatory exams, books and online materials. In addition, within 20 days of a student’s graduation date, students will receive access to ATI’s Virtual Tutor for up to 12 weeks. The Virtual Tutor is ATI’s online review option that pairs students directly with a virtual coach for their NCLEX® prep. During their 12-week study program, students are guided through everything they need to know to prepare and pass. Working at their own pace, students gain knowledge, support and feedback from their online coach.

Upon completion of graduation requirements and achievement of 91% or higher on ATI’s NCLEX predictor exam and/or 75% completion of ATI’s Virtual Tutor modules, students will receive a voucher code valued at $200.00 to pay for the NCLEX-PN examination with Pearson Vue.

Practical Nursing1,200 Hours

Programmatically Accredited by: Accreditation Commission for Education in NursingApproved by: New Hampshire Board of Nursing

Program Mission: American School of Nursing and Medical Careers, in response to the community’s need for qualified nurses, is dedicated to preparing Practical Nurses who demonstrate competence, sound judgment, caring behaviors, professionalism, and an interest in lifelong learning. Additionally, American School of Nursing and Medical Careers is committed to fostering career advancement and meeting the educational needs of individuals who are committed to nursing as a profession. It does so by providing a New Hampshire Board of Nursing approved, quality practical nursing program. Graduates of the Practical Nursing program are prepared to achieve licensure as Practical Nurses, to coordinate and perform health care services that provide individualized patient/client centered care under the direction of a registered nurse, registered nurse practitioner, dentist, or physician in a variety of health care settings. Graduates promote health and wellness, prevent illness, deliver care through the nursing process (by contributing to assessment, planning, implementation of restorative, rehabilitative, and palliative care interventions, and evaluation of specific patient responses), and collaborate as responsible members of the health care team.

Program Philosophy: American School of Nursing and Medical Careers’ philosophy is based on the values and beliefs of its administration and faculty and reflects its mission. It incorporates the concepts of individual and community, nursing process, nursing diagnosis, critical thinking, health, education, and environment.

We the administration and faculty, believe that each individual is unique and has a distinctive set of spiritual, emotional, cultural, cognitive and physical dimensions. Each individual person is motivated

by her or his beliefs, values, perceptions and goals. The ability of a person to be self-directed and/or to adapt to changes varies depending on all of the preceding factors. Nursing, we believe, is a dynamic and creative process, requiring a base of knowledge in the humanities, the sciences, nursing process, nursing diagnosis, and critical thinking (cognitive domain), skill in performing assessments and technical procedures (psychomotor domain), and an empathetic and caring approach toward patients/clients (affective domain). Further, we believe that nursing encompasses the provision of individual patient/client centered care which promotes and attains/maintains optimal health. We believe that this care includes assisting the patient/client during both health and illness to carry out activities he or she would perform independently if able (i.e. capable or knowledgeable) which contribute to health, recovery, or peaceful death. We envision the nurse as advocate, as a teacher and care provider. Further, we believe that care must be provided in a manner that assists the patient/client to regain his or her independence as quickly as possible. (Henderson, 1960)*

The scope of practice of the practical nurse in New Hampshire, in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act and Administrative Rules has specific foci as outlined on page 23.

We consider health to be dynamic across the lifespan and to include physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of self, which may be influenced by the external environment. Each patient/client has the right to be cared for through a holistic, patient-centered approach in light of his or her interconnected biologic, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs. We maintain an awareness of community needs based on the health dynamics of specific populations through collaborative liaisons

with health care providers and agencies.

We believe, therefore, that we must provide education through courses and clinical experience which support the development of the individual student as a competent, qualified, compassionate practitioner, functioning within the scope of practice of the practical nurse, and under the direction of a registered nurse, advanced registered nurse practitioner, dentist, or physician. We believe it is our obligation to teach in a manner that supports the students’ success. We respect each student’s uniqueness and the difference in learning styles, and therefore, we continuously assess and address the individual needs of students in an assistive manner.

We believe that to be successful educators we must provide education through didactic teaching, demonstration, role modeling, guiding, observation, and testing of students. We strive to create an environment in which critical thinking, creativity, and independence appropriate to the scope of practice and the student’s current level of knowledge and skill are valued. We encourage the student to participate in interactive and reciprocal learning and to continue development of lifelong learning skills.

Program Description: The program provides learning experiences that prepare the student to carry out the scope of practice, nursing duties, and responsibilities, of the Licensed Practical Nurse in New Hampshire. Clinical experiences occur in a variety of health care settings. The student is able to learn and to develop skills that she or he will need to deliver patient/client centered care, and to promote health and wellness. The majority of students are able to complete the program within 12 months.

The student learns that nursing is caring for and about individuals, families, and the community. Each individual is a unique person with specific biologic, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs. The student learns to recognize that body, mind and spirit are interconnected. She or he gains a further appreciation and respect for diversity. These unique aspects of each person are part of the assessment factors that the student must use in carrying out the

nursing process while providing care and evaluating the care recipient's response. The program is focused on the student as a learner. The student learns critical thinking, assessment of data and information (nursing assessment), response to patient's needs and plan care (care planning and evaluation). The coursework enables the student to become knowledgeable and skilled, and to develop professional judgment and manner of thinking. The student's achievement is evaluated through academic classes, labs, and clinical experiences.

Program terms are sequential. All nursing courses are sequential by term. Any deviance from the sequence on page 49 of non-nursing courses would an exception and must be approved by the Director of Nursing.
