Danny and Petra Rueda

Small towns are known for having tight commu-nities in which everyone knows everyone’s name. That is definitely the case with this year’s Wasco Festival grand marshals, Danny and Petra Rueda. Danny was born in Wasco and Petra was born in Bakersfield, but both were raised in Was-co and both went through the Wasco school system. They didn’t go to school together, since Danny is a few years older than Pe-tra. Danny has been retired since 2005 and previously drove a bus for the Wasco Union Elementary School District. He served in the U.S. Army, 1983-1986. More recently, he was the 2018-2019 commander of VFW Post 6742. The Ruedas hosted two of the Wasco Reserve baseball team players this summer. He also arranged housing in the VFW hall to any player who didn’t have a host family. Be-cause of that, both be-came close to their young houseguests. Petra worked part-time for the WUESD for a couple of years and is currently employed with the Kern County Human Services Department as an eligibility worker. She began working full time when Danny retired in 2005. The Ruedas have two children, 29-year-old Jose Rueda, who lives in Flor-

ida and has their first grandson, 1-year-old Jax-son Rueda, and 24-year-old daughter Victoria Rueda, who is currently attending California State University, Bakersfield and studying criminal jus-tice and communications. Both are involved in volunteering within the community. Danny vol-unteers at the VFW, Knights of Columbus, Elks, WUESD and on the advisory committee of the Wasco State Prison board.

Ken and Tina Newman

Ken and Tina Newman are the worker bees be-hind the scenes that make things happen. Tina has in the past and continues to volunteer for

Relay for Life, Toys for Ti-gers, the Rose Pageant and PEO Sorority while man-aging to work full time at Community Support Op-tions for disabled adults 18 years and older. Ken has also volunteered for 20 years for the Knights of Columbus, Toys for Ti-gers and the Rose Pageant and works for Certis, a bi-ological insecticide plant. Tina describes the PEO Sorority as an organiza-tion that promotes the ed-ucation of young women. Also, they both volun-teer at Wasco’s Tiger Cage Crew, which is for football season ticket holders who get selected seats in the stands and a meal at every home game. “The season tickets are on the 15-yard line,” Ken said. Since they are both

Wasco born and raised, there exists no other team than the Tigers for the two of them. But, Tina confessed to a Dodger ob-session. Additionally, Tina add-ed that she loved to work in the background instead of in the forefront. “I don’t like to be high-lighted,” she said. That’s why when the committee contacted her to ask if they would be co-grand marshals, she immediate-ly thought they wanted her to work on the com-mittee; but she was sur-prised when they asked both of them to be recog-nized for their commit-ment to the community and for giving back so much. Tina added that she is also involved in the Flocked Flamingos fund-raiser that are already be-ing rented and displayed in several front yards around town. The two own a moto-rhome and love to travel in it. “I’m the designated driver,” Tina said. As she explains it, she drives a bus that can seat 40 for work so she is the more skilled of the two in that area. “We also do food bas-kets for seniors and needy families during the holi-days,” Tina added. “We get the names from many dif-ferent organizations with-in the community, and we don’t question, we just act on their suggestion.” Beside working full-time, Petra volunteers on the Wasco Planning Com-mission.

FEATURED ARTIST

The 2019 Wasco Festi-val will feature the work of a local well-known artist who has been cre-ating pieces for over 30 years. Shirell Sanford was an art teacher at Maple School for 34 years and has been able to take what she taught in the classroom and bring it to life through her ar-tistic projects. Her pre-ferred medium is pen-cil; however, she has

one very recognizable painting of a huge “W” on the back of the Was-co High gymnasium. Sanford was born in Wasco at the long-gone maternity home located on 7th Street. She re-members being treated by a Dr. Mary when she was young. The hospi-tal used to be located across the street from the current library. She attended Bakers-fi eld College and always

wanted to be a teacher. She began working as an instructional aide at Maple School and was planning on continuing her education. While her intention was to work part time and continue her educa-tion, instead, she began teaching full time and never looked back. Sanford volunteers at Maple School twice a week, teaching art in transitional kinder-garten through eighth grade. She and her husband

worked on props for the pageants over the years. She is a spring 2018 retiree and said, “I bowed out this year. I needed to lay low.” Sanford loves Was-co and has only lived in three houses on the same block in her life-time. “John and I met when he was a senior at Shafter High,” she said. “I needed to work for the summer, so I got a job at Jack in the Box in Lost Hills. He was work-ing there as well. We

married in the 1980s and have one child, Jami.” John passed in 2013. “You don’t realize how that one person can affect others until they are gone,” she said. “People still come up to me and talk about John.” She mentioned that these comments have led her to reflect on life in general. Additionally, she said that she created the decorations – ice cream sundaes on the walls – for last year’s Wine and Roses Evening. She has

also created several mu-rals at Wasco schools (Pruitt, Palm Avenue, Thomas Jefferson and Wasco High), as well as Maple School and schools in Buttonwill-ow. “I love getting paid to color,” Sanford said. She is passionate about all things art. “I have no secrets; I’m an open book.” She is humbled to be named the featured art-ist for the 2019 Wine and Roses event and the Wasco Festival.

MISS WASCO SAYS GOODBYE

A wise teacher once in-structed that “If you puff yourself up, you’ll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you’re content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty. (Mark 23:12). As long as I can remem-ber, I have always admired those with a calling to serve others. It’s easy to associate Queenship with the glam-our of a beautiful dress and a sparkling crown, but just as in an empire, the queen holds a valuable position to best serve those who surround her. Being Miss Wasco has allowed me the opportunity to better understand what it means to serve my communi-ty and influence others. Don’t get me wrong though, the shiny crown and beautiful sash do help keep the twinkle in the eye of any Queen. As the season of my reign comes to an end, I’m humbled to know I serve a great community, which has supported me to serve others and confidently influence the next generation of leaders. As Miss Wasco, I had the honor to be involved with multiple community events. Thank you to all that invited me! Of course, no Queen does it alone. The Lord has tru-ly blessed me with this op-portunity to be a light in my community. I thank you ev-ery day for the people I get to represent and for this town full of love. Thank you to my parents for a lifetime of love and sup-port. I have you to thank for the person I am today and I hope I’ve made you proud. Thank you for the wise ad-vice, encouragement, teach-ing me to love like God, and

for the great taste in music. God has blessed me with the best parents and I can’t tell you enough how much I love you guys. Also, a big thank you to the rest of my family. To my tias, tios, cousins, grandpar-ents and sisters for being

my rock and my number one fans. I love our big, crazy family with all my heart, and I appreciate everything you continue to do for me. Thank you to all my close friends who have always sup-ported me from day one. I love you all so much and I value your true friendship. Thank you to my chap-erone, Jaira Rodriguez, for beautifying me for the pag-eant. You make the madness

of blue eyeshadow, teased hair and last-minute bobby pinning look so easy! I’m so grateful I have great friends like you to encourage and support me throughout the night! Thank you to the direc-tors Debbie, Hailey, Coco

and Sydney for putting on a beautiful pageant year after year! From the theme, to the wardrobe, to the stage dec-orations, you are the reason the Rose Queen experience is so amazing. The amount of time you ladies put in is astounding and we are all so grateful for what you give to this town. Thank you to Noah Mc-Clain for being a great escort for the past two years. You

made the pageant experience fun and stress-free. I really ap-preciate all the encouragement and laughs that we shared. To my Tea Party for 20 peeps, each one of you hold a special place in my heart. From UberEats, to random acapella sing-offs, dance bat-tles and late-night talks, I have endless memories with you that I will cherish for a lifetime. I’m so excited for what God has in store for you all and can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings to you. I love you guys To the 2019 Galactic Gals, I’m so glad I was able to spend this summer with such a great group of girls. You all have worked so hard for this night and I hope each of you all have enjoyed every minute of your time together. You were such a supportive and fun group, thank you for welcoming me with open arms. To Miss Wasco 2019, it’s your time to shine. Put your best foot forward to be light to the town and for those who look up to you. Stay true to yourself and remember that it is such an honor to repre-sent our lovely little town. I hope you treasure every mo-ment you have as Queen be-cause it will all be over in the blink of an eye and you’ll be wishing it could start all over. As my reign is coming to an end, I would like to thank the town of Wasco. Thank you for giving me a great year as Queen. It has truly been filled with amazing memo-ries and I’m grateful to have been able to serve you. As I move on to the next chapter in my life, I will never forget the loving place I call home.

ORIGINS OF THE WASCO FESTIVAL

The rose is an appropriate symbol for Wasco, a community that is caring and sensitive to the needs and concerns of others. The small-town atmosphere serves this city well, where a majority of its citizens take an active part in activities, events, and occasions that serve to bring the town closer together.

Nothing defi nes Wasco better than the annual Wasco Festival, during which the rose and its local industry are hon-ored, as well as the city. Universally accepted as liv-ing symbols of love, friendship, success and peace, roses are becoming more and more pop-ular as gifts for all occasions

and, as well, for spur-of-the moment, everyday expressions of good feelings. And good feelings abound in Wasco, especially the fi rst weekend of September each

year when the Wasco Festival is held. There’s no days more ap-propriate to “stop and smell the roses” than during the Wasco Festival!

Rose is a symbol of love and caring

If candidate violates any regulations throughout the duration of the pageant, citizenship points may be deducted. Up to 5 points per occu-rance may be deducted depending upon severity, and will be on a case-by-case basis. These points will be available to the judges for evaluation the night of the pageant.

SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT — 15% A panel of qualified ed-ucators review and rate transcripts of grades and scores of scholastic tests and college entrance ex-aminations.
