BALMAIN FUN RUN
What a great end to the week! Ms Weston and Ms Whelan took Alexandra and Joe, our Prime Ministers, to Stewart House, at Curl Curl, for a special afternoon. Balmain Public School was awarded with a ‘Silver Supporter’, for our fundraising efforts in 2018!
We are proud supporters of Stewart House - a safe haven for 1,700 public school children annually, offering a 12-day stay which includes: educational programs and excursions, as well as dental, optical, hearing and medical screening and treatment - it is the official charity supported by the Department of Education.

What a test can’t test… Dear Year 3 and Year 5 students and parents/carers
May 14-24 has been assigned as the Years 3 & 5 NAPLAN Online dates across Australia, whilst schools still participating in paper tests, have May 14-16 set aside for completion.
This test is a mere snapshot on a particular day; it does not assess all of what makes each of you exceptional and unique.
The people who score these tests don’t know that some of you love to sing or play an instrument, are good at drawing, or can teach others how to use a computer program. They have not seen the way that some of you can dance with grace, or speak confidently to a large group. They do not know that your friends count on you to be there for them when they are sad. They do not know that you participate in sports, help your Mum or Dad, or that you play with your little brother, sister or cousins. They do not know that you are caring, thoughtful and that, every day, you do your best, because these are attributes that cannot be tested.
The scores you will get from this test will only tell you how you did on the day of the test, but will not tell you everything.
The results can’t tell you that you have improved on something that you once found difficult. They can’t tell you that you brighten up your teacher’s day. They can’t tell you how amazingly special you are.
Hopefully, you will tackle each NAPLAN test to the best of your
ability, although you need to remember that there is no one way to ‘test’ all the wonderful things that make you, YOU!

Balmain Public School will continue participating in NAPLAN Online this year, ahead of online testing being mandatory as of 2020. There is a longer window for schools to complete NAPLAN Online,14-24 May, whilst schools still sitting paper tests will need to complete in the 14-16 May timeframe.
The Department of Education, or DoE, has inserted information on our website https://balmain-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/news/2019/5/your-naplan-questions-answered.html
The proposed schedule below will be followed, unless variations need to be made due to unforeseen circumstances, such as internet outage.
NB: All tests are online, except for Year 3 Writing, which is a paper test.
SCHEDULE Tuesday 14 May Year 3 & Year 5 - Writing
Wednesday 15 May Year 3 & Year 5 - Reading
Thursday 16 May Year 3 & Year 5 - Reading
Year 3 & Year 5 - Conventions of Language
Friday 17 May Year 5 - Conventions of Language
Monday 20 May Year 3 & Year 5 - Conventions of Language
Tuesday 21 May Year 3 & Year 5 - Numeracy
Wednesday 22 May Year 3 & Year 5 - Numeracy
Thursday 23 May Catch-up (if required)
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT - MAY P&C MEETING All students at Balmain PS sit NAPLAN, regardless of ability, unless parents/carers have withdrawn their child from the tests. No child is ever discouraged from participating. At Balmain PS, we do not teach to the test - we teach to the curriculum.
Upon the review of our 2018 NAPLAN Year 3 results, which were close to, or above, all Australian schools, and substantially above in all areas for Year 5, we have identified possible contributing factors that may have affected our Year 3 results, compared to Similar School Groups (SSG), last year: • only a small cluster of higher academic ability students in Year 3 2018 • an unusually higher cluster of lower academic ability students in Year 3 2018 • 1st year of online NAPLAN - optional (compulsory from 2020) - Balmain PS opted in - in our similar school group
of 59 schools, only 8 (including Balmain) opted to do NAPLAN online • difficulty in navigating unfamiliar online program layout • out of the Peninsula DoE schools - Nicholson St, Birchgrove, Rozelle and Balmain - only Nicholson St and
Balmain were online • 2 x Year 3 students have shown up on our results, yet were not enrolled at Balmain PS during NAPLAN - non-
MySchool data shows that these 2 students achieved very low results
Although NAPLAN is a one-off test that only reflects a minor snapshot of a student's ability, the school continues to use these results to inform future teaching and learning:
• We identify the gaps in student learning, and as a result, establish the 'where to next?' • For example, in 2014, it was identified that writing was significantly lower than our SSG. As a result, in early
2015, all staff participated in a whole-day professional learning course on the 'Seven Steps to Writing Success’ https://www.sevenstepswriting.com/
• At the beginning of 2018, we subscribed to the 'Typing Tournament' online program, in anticipation of participating in NAPLAN online. We have continued to subscribe to this program this year, to assist students in continuing to build their touch-typing skills https://www.typingtournament.com/
• Following the release of the 2018 NAPLAN results last year, we have purchased K-6 Progressive Achievement Tests, or PAT, Maths and English, to benchmark student learning, determine 'where to next?' and monitor student growth https://www.acer.org/au/pat
• P&C led - funded 10 weeks of one day a week reading with small groups in 2018; internal data reflected growth in student reading - repeated last term, starting Week 3 (a couple of weeks to go)
• We are continuing the process of investigating further strategies to move student learning
