SPRING BREAK

WHAT ARE SPRING BREAK WORKSHOPS?

Spring break workshops are one-day programs offered during Chicago Public School’s Spring Break week, April 15-19. Programs include art making workshops, movie screenings, and space for students to work independently on projects or homework. All programs are open to 6-12 graders. Lunch will be provided for workshops, and there will be snacks at the movie screenings.

COLLEGE VISITSInterested or curious about college life? Learn about various schools, majors, career paths, and the benefits of higher education through Marwen’s FREE college visits. All trips are open to students and families and include admissions info, a campus tour, and food! Free transportation is provided and all trips leave from and return to Marwen. Open to 6-12 graders and parents; high school students will be prioritized.

MONDAY - FRIDAY I APRIL 15 - 19MOVIES AT MARWEN!10 AM - NOON & 2 - 4 PM | Studio 3Watch movies with your Marwen friends! Bring your homework, work on drawings, or just grab some popcorn and sit back and enjoy the film. Each day we will feature two movies – stay for one or both.

MONDAY, APRIL 15LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTING10 AM - 4 PM TA: Liana Faletto | Studio 7Learn the art of the multiple! Explore relief, one of the most available forms of printmaking. Carve your drawings into linoleum to create multi-layer, multi-color prints that you can share with your family and friends.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO + GALLERY 40010 AM - 3:30 PM UIC has 30,000+ students, 15 colleges, and provides access to excellence and opportunity in a welcoming environment with a diverse student body. This visit includes a fun button-making workshop with a college-level art class and a visit to Gallery 400.

TUESDAY, APRIL 16GRAPHIC DESIGN10 AM - 4 PM TA: Victoria Williamson | Studio 1Design like a pro! Learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator by creating dynamic poster designs. Explore how you can create impactful designs through the use of line and color.

SPLATTER & MARBLE: FUN WITH PAINT!11 AM - 4 PM Marwen’s Student Advisory Board Studios 4 & 5Use unconventional brushes, sponges, and balloons to create colorful, spontaneous

paintings for yourself as well as a large collaborative piece that celebrates Marwen! You will also learn different marbling techniques and meet Marwen’s Student Advisory Board. Wear clothing you can get messy in.

COLUMBIA COLLEGE CHICAGO + MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY10 AM - 3:30 PMLocated in the heart of downtown Chicago, Columbia offers 60+ programs for 7,000+ students who see the world through a creative lens. Visit will end with a trip to the Museum of Contemporary Photography.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17STORYTELLING THROUGH ILLUSTRATION10 AM - 4 PMTA: Jade Rector I Studio 4Learn to make your drawings and paintings communicate a story through color, mood, and gesture to create visual narratives through genres like comic books, children’s book illustration, and poster design.

ARRUPE COLLEGE9 AM - NOON As a 2-year college of Loyola University Chicago, Arrupe offers liberal arts education to a diverse population, many who are first-generation college students and have limited financial resources. Come learn about this supportiveacademic environment!

If you are interested in registering for Spring Break Workshops or May Term Courses, visit marwen.org/registration starting Wednesday, March 27 at 3 pm. Registration is open to returning students and is first-come, first-served. Registration will close on Saturday, April 6.

As always, be sure to check your schedule before registering to ensure you are able to fully commit to workshops or courses! All requests must be submitted online. If you forgot your password, click on “Forgot Password?” If you forgot your username, click on “Forgot Username?” Our registration is now mobile-friendly. If you do not have access to a computer, smartphone, or tablet you are welcome to use the computers in Marwen’s Student & Family Lounge.

WHAT IS MAY TERM?Marwen’s May Term offers 4-session courses with unique opportunities to explore new forms of art and travel outside of Marwen. Courses meet once a week for 2 ½ hours for a total of 4 class sessions beginning Tuesday, May 7, continuing through Wednesday, May 29.

GRAYSCALE: DARKROOM PHOTO TA: Jon Taala I Studio 2 | Grades 9-12Play and experiment to learn the basics of black and white analog photography. Explore advanced darkroom techniques to create large scale prints.

RISE UP: EXHIBITION & WORKSHOP DESIGNTA: Barbara Banda I Studio 3 I Grades 6-12See what it takes to put on an event! Learn to lead group workshops and curate a Marwen exhibition. Our last class will be offsite at Project Innovation on Thursday, May 23 (4-8 PM) where you will use your skills to share your work with other Chicago teens. Students can earn up to 12 service learning hours. You must be available on Thurs, May 23 to register for this course.

VISUAL IDENTITY: THE ART OF WHO I AMTA: Maricela Ramirez | Studio 5 I Grades 9-12Identify personal experiences and artwork that have shaped your identity. Explore how to reflect yourself in your artwork by creating your own visual identity through mixed media, photography, and writing artist and personal statements.

ARTIST TRADING CARDS: DRAWING EXPLORATIONSTA: Ari Muhammad I Studio 4 I Grades 6-8Learn from the tradition of baseball and Pokémon cards to design and illustrate your own set of Artist Trading Cards! Use a variety of drawing mediums and explore your favorite themes, characters, or drawings to create cards to trade and collect.

PRESENTING YOUR FASHION VOICE FASHION PORTFOLIOTA: Nelson Cantada I Studio 8 I Grades 9-12Show who you are as a designer! Create a sketchbook of your inspirations and learn to develop presentation boards of your fashion illustrations, flat sketches, mood images, and fabric and color ideas like an industry professional to express your design ideas.

WEDNESDAYS I May 8 - 29PHOTO RETOUCHINGTA: Sarah Joyce I Studio 1 I Grades 6-12Edit and retouch your photographs like a pro! Explore the various ways you can alter your images in Adobe Photoshop. Learn tips and tricks to make your photos pop!

LOGO DESIGN TA: Richard Manigault I Studio 3 I Grades 9-12Explore how popular brands like Nike and McDonald’s are created and promoted. Learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to redesign or design a new brand by creating a logo, product, and social media campaign.

TINY LIBRARY DESIGNTA: Carrie Rasor I Studio 5 I Grades 6-12Learn how to safely use drills, saws, and hammers to build tiny take-and-leave libraries that hold comics, books, drawings, and letters! You will cut, assemble, and paint three unique libraries -- two for Marwen and one for a local community center.

PORTRAIT POTTERY: CERAMIC DESIGNTA: Janani Nathan I Studio 6 I Grades 6-12Tell your story through clay! Learn wheelthrowing and handbuilding techniques to craft functional vessels that represent significant people in your life. Use form, surface design, and color to create meaningful objects.

T-SHIRT SHOP: INTRO TO PRINTMAKINGTA: Liz Born I Studio 7 I Grades 6-12 Learn to create t-shirts using your own designs! Design compelling images and experiment with woodcut, screenprinting, stenciling, and more to create your own original tees.

EXPLORING CHICAGO: FIELD TRIP COURSETA: James Jankowiak I Loggia I Grades 6-12Step outside of the walls of Marwen and experience the many artist spaces, galleries, murals, and museums that Chicago has to offer. With Marwen as your guide, you will go to a different neighborhood every class to explore new communities and art spaces.

SCHOOL OF THE ART INSTITUTE + THE ART INSTITUTENOON - 5 PM Start the afternoon with a fun trip to the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by a visit to SAIC, one of the largest schools of art and design in the country. Learn about programs in Painting & Drawing, Printmedia, Ceramics, Photography, Performance, and Sculpture.

THURSDAY, APRIL 18SHIBORI: JAPANESE PATTERNS & DESIGN10 AM - 4 PM TA: Rachelle Hill | Studio 8Create beautiful and complex images and patterns on fabric using the Japanese tie-dye art

of Shibori. Learn how to stitch, tie, clamp, wax, dye, and more to develop mesmerizing images, color patterns, or narrative designs on fabric.

MILWAUKEE INSTITUTE OF ART & DESIGN + MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM9 AM - 5:30 PMJoin us on a trip to Wisconsin to visit MIAD to learn about visual art and design college programs. We also wouldn’t take you to Milwaukee without visiting the Milwaukee Art Museum, one of the largest museums in the United States.

DEPAUL UNIVERSITY 11:30 AM - 3 PMDePaul serves nearly 23,000 students with 300+ undergraduate majors and graduate programs, so chances are good they have what you are looking for.

FRIDAY, APRIL 19STREET ART: GRAFFITI PAINTING10 AM - 4 PMTA: Jazmin Dua | Studio 4Become a street artist! Work with stencils, stickers, and spray paint to create your own graffiti designs. Gain inspiration from murals, photography, printmaking, and graffiti to create impactful messages and experiment with different types of street art.

This is an annual opportunity for current and prospective Marwen students and their families to explore multiple career pathways. Connect with professionals doing work you might want to do and ask them for career advice.

SPRING TERM EXHIBITION May 3 - June 8, 2019Exhibition Celebration: Friday, May 3 I 5 - 7 pm Celebrate new student work from Marwen’s 2019 Spring Term at this FREE reception. Enjoy light appetizers, art making activities, meet students from all Spring courses, and discover more about Marwen!
