Absences Please phone the Business Services Office on 5446 4780 or email [email protected] previous to or on the day of your child’s absence. If a student is to be away for a particular day or an extended period, we would ask parents to contact the school and create a “Scheduled Absence” through the Parent Portal.

Administration of Medication Students requiring medication at school will need to have the Medication Authorisation Form completed by their parent. These forms are available from the Business Services Office. All medication is to be stored at the Business Services Office.

Behaviour Management System It should be noted in advance that our primary goal in our management of behaviour at CBCC is to manage our learning environments in such a way that we rarely need to exercise the following process. Our priority is to operate a highly effective in-class behaviour management system with multiple layers that focuses significantly more attention on rewarding students who do the right thing. The foundation of an effective system is making sure all students are clear about the expectations and the rules that have been established for their learning environment. It is also essential that students are made aware of the natural consequences of their choices BEFORE the process commences. If students choose to willingly and consistently disobey the clearly established and understood rules of their learning environment, they are choosing to engage the process below: Step 1: Student is given the first official warning for inappropriate behaviour. (Students should be clearly notified at this point that the process has commenced and why.) Step 2: Student is given the second official warning for inappropriate behaviour AND is asked to move to an isolated ‘Time Out’ area within the classroom (preferably placed so that the offending student can have no visual or other contact with their peers) where they continue doing class work. Step 3: Student is given their third and final warning for inappropriate behaviour AND is sent immediately to their ‘behaviour buddy’ class with a note from the issuing teacher and any necessary work books, pencils etc. On arrival at their ‘behaviour buddy’ class, the student is directed to the ‘Behaviour Buddy Table’ and notified to fill out the reflection sheet quietly and put their hands on their head (or similar) when finished to notify the teacher that they are ready to discuss their behaviour. The ‘Behaviour Buddy’ class teacher would then check the reflection sheet and talk to the offending student about their behaviour. If the teacher considers the reflection sheet (and the student’s attitude) to be acceptable they would sign it and direct the student to quietly complete work set by their class teacher until the next break (morning tea, lunch or home). At this time (if the offending student’s behaviour is still considered to be acceptable) they would be sent back to their home class with instructions to deliver their reflection sheet to their class teacher (and most likely further discussion about re-entry to the class).

Camps Camps are a compulsory part of the College’s program aiming to provide a variety of experiences considered essential to the total development of the student. Camps endeavour to cover a range of activities tailored to meet the needs of students. Activities are based upon decision-making, communication, team building, leadership and goal setting.

Canteen Hours of operation: Wednesday – Friday, morning tea and lunch Ordering for canteen is via flexischools.com.au or by using the paper bag order system, as well as over the counter sales. To keep costs as low as possible and reduce waste, we ask students to order in advance, where possible. A price list and ordering procedure is distributed to parents on Student Services Day, as well as being made available on the Parent Portal and the Flexischools website. Orders must be made before 8.30am on the day.

Celebration Events In November of each year, we hold a Celebration Night for Secondary School and a Celebration Afternoon for the Lower Primary, followed by a Celebration Night for Upper Primary. These events are compulsory for all students. They showcase our College and encourage the students to excel in all areas of College life.

Changes to Family Circumstances The College acknowledges that from time to time (whether prior to signing the Enrolment Application or after) parents of the child may separate or divorce. Whilst the College endeavours to be sensitive to the wishes and needs of the parents and the child, the parents:

a) agree to provide the College with copies of any court orders, including Family Court orders, which deals with parental responsibility for the child or otherwise limits the contact or communication one or more parents or other persons has with the child (eg. domestic violence order);

b) acknowledge and agree that despite the College being provided with copies of any such orders the school does not assume any responsibility for the parents complying with those orders or any other obligations that parents have at law including under the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth);

c) acknowledge and agree that they are responsible for all parental responsibility in relation to the child as prescribed by law, including under the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth), or by any order of a court;

d) agree to inform the College if they separate and to keep the school informed of any changes to the address or addresses of the parents and the child save that the parents must nominate an address in which the child ordinarily lives during school term (as this is the address that the College will correspond with the parents).

Chapel Chapel is an integral, and often focal point of our College life. Parents, families and friends are welcome to attend. Chapel is held in the Coolum Christian Family Church auditorium. Primary Chapel: Wednesdays, 2:10pm Senior Chapel: Wednesdays, 10:10am

Chaplain and Pastoral Care Pastor Tim Turley is one of the Pastors at Coolum Christian Family Church, and is also our amazing College Chaplain. Pastor Tim has the important role of pastoral care for our students and their families. His role includes supporting the social, spiritual and emotional well-being of our College community. He also helps students with their interpersonal relationships, establishing biblical values and nurtures their spiritual growth in a safe environment. Our students feel comfortable with Pastor Tim and see him as a fun-loving, approachable Chaplain. Pastor Tim is on campus every Monday and Wednesday. He teaches our Secondary students Christian Studies and organises the Primary and Secondary Chapel gatherings. He spends morning teas and lunches interacting with students, and is a champion handball player. We are blessed to have our College Chaplain so firmly integrated into the College community. Please contact Tim via email [email protected] or at the Coolum Christian Family Church offices on 5446 1295.

Child Protection Policy Under legislation, duty of care obligations, and the faith basis of Coolum Beach Christian College, the College is committed to providing a safe environment to all Students and to upholding their best interests and wellbeing. Coolum Beach Christian College’s Child Protection Policy is available from the Business Services Office and our website.

Communication It is imperative that a strong communication link between the home and the school is maintained at all times. Teachers and parents are encouraged to make regular contact through the use of school diaries, email, digital platforms, phone calls and appointments for before and school meetings.

Curriculum At Coolum Beach Christian College, we believe that education should be exciting, satisfying and lifelong. We want our students to become critical and compassionate thinkers who can communicate well, and make informed decisions. We want them to be able to defend their values, and understanding to others while becoming responsible citizens able to adapt to change. Our unique innovative curriculum has been created to enable our students to achieve the above aims and reach their individual potential. At CBCC we endorse the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians; our curriculum is designed to develop successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active and informed citizens. We are a Christian School and as such a Christian perspective directs our curriculum and filters into the learning opportunities we present. We believe that strong character development is an important aspect of learning as the development of the mind. Our Christian values will equip the students to build social and emotional intelligence that will equip them for life. We are preparing students to think well and live deliberately. Electronic Items and Mobile Phones No electronic items such as mobile phones, iPods, etc. are to be used during school hours. Phone use will only be at the teacher’s discretion and will be for educational purposes only. If confiscated, mobile phones may be collected from the Business Services Office at the end of the school day. If a student is seen to be using a mobile phone during the day, the phone will be confiscated and an appropriate consequence put in place. The College holds no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged goods.

Enews The College newsletter is published each Friday afternoon and emailed to our parent and staff community. The Enews is our primary source of communication and contains essential information for your awareness. Please be sure to read the publication in a timely manner.

Enrichment Programs To learn effectively, a child needs to experience success in school and feel confident about their learning experiences. Our vision for Coolum Beach Christian College is that all students feel valued, supported and connected in a caring learning environment that presents both challenges and inspiration so students are able to do their best, pursue individual excellence and develop into a passionate lifelong learner.

Our dedicated Learning Enrichment Team aims to support teachers cater for individual student needs. This is achieved by providing differentiated teaching strategies and resources that cater for learning support or advanced curriculum offerings. The CBCC Learning Enrichment Team is comprised of Learning Support and Learning Enrichment. These programs are coordinated by Mrs Glenda Hornby and Mrs Tracey Shields and are implemented in the classrooms with the help of our skilled teacher aides.

The enrichment learning program is coordinated by Tracey Shields and encourages students to explore their world, develop their gifts and talents, challenge and stimulate their thinking and enhance their enthusiasm for learning. They will become responsible and productive individuals who are independent thinkers and cooperative class members.

The learning support program is coordinated by Glenda Hornby and assists students who may be experiencing difficulty accessing the classroom curriculum. Teachers identify students who are not achieving at their year level and refer them to the learning support team. The team gathers information about the student, with parent consultation and develops a support plan.

To assist with this process, a school data bank has been set up where information is gathered about all students’ learning (Prep to Year 12) through standardised assessment. The information is collected and analysed, and used to inform teachers about students’ learning needs, as well as monitoring students’ progress across their school years.

Extreme Weather Events and Emergency Communication The College may close in extreme weather events. As much notice as possible will be given via the College website, text, email and Facebook page. We encourage families to check these platforms prior to phoning the College.

First Aid All College staff are trained annually in First Aid. Staff will administer first aid as per their training. An ambulance will be called for any serious issues. A staff member will always accompany the child to hospital, should the parent not be onsite. Parents are always contacted as soon as possible when a serious incident occurs.

Free Dress Days Occasionally, days are organised where students may attend the College, out of uniform. Sensible and modest dress standards still apply. These are often fundraising events. Sensible and Modest Dress:

• Covered/enclosed shoes • No thongs or sandals • Hats (no hat, no play) • No mid-rift tops • Shirts must have sleeves • No inappropriate logos, images or text • Minimal jewellery and make-up • Girls’ hair may be out during these events. (No colours or radical styles, boys included).

Heart and Brain Matters Our aim at Coolum Beach Christian College is to grow beautiful people. We believe that strong character development is an important aspect of learning as is the development of the mind, therefore Christian values are taught in all areas of the College each day. Our School Matters program (Heart and Brain Matters) is based on biblical principles and taught across all year levels. Heart Matters are the moral habits, intelligences, mental thinking, attitudes and actions that develop inner character or the heart of the student and these include: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Brain Matters are learnable intelligences or habits that develop thinking abilities and help students become lifelong learners which include: cooperation, positivity, conflict resolution, persistence, choices, excellence, loyalty, risk-taking and taking action.

These are skills that are deliberately introduced and cultivated within our whole school environment. Our program is explicitly taught within our classrooms from Prep to Year 12 and this ensures that all students are practicing the same skills and using the same language across the whole College. This builds a strong, positive culture in our College and wider community. Our School Matters program equips our students with the skills required to develop strong character, morals and values. Bullying is addressed in this program and students are guided in how to navigate a wide range of situations they may face during school and beyond.

Infectious Diseases/Health and Hygiene Parents are asked to keep their child at home if they are suffering from any contagious illness. These include, but are not limited to vomiting, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, chicken pox, mumps, measles, nausea, ringworm, whooping cough, coughs, cold viruses and impetigo (school sores). If a child has an elevated temperature (above 380C) this is an indicator of an infection and they should be kept home. Head lice is to be treated immediately and the school notified via phone call or email. Should a child be detected with head lice, they will be sent home. Please consult your health care professional for advice on whether your child should be at school.

Similarly, parents who collect their children early if they are unwell or for appointments, are required to sign their child out using the Passtab process.
