About Connection Newspapers and Web ServicesYour advertising campaign appears in any or all of Connection Newspapers and Web Services’ 15demographically segmented markets in print, digital editions and on our websites. Our audiencetotals more than 200,000 readers and viewers living in many of Northern Virginia’s most upscalesuburbs as well as in exclusive Potomac, Md. Each weekly printed edition publishes with aWednesday insertion order date. Distribution of the hard copies and digital PDF editions beginseach Wednesday and Thursday:

• Our printed and digital PDF newspapers are distributed weekly to more than 100,000 homes andbusinesses with readership of more than 200,000, according to the Circulation Verification Council.

• Unlike the strategy of mass marketing through less-efficient and often inappropriatesaturation delivery, the Connection Newspapers uses database marketing similar to that usedby sophisticated national political campaigns and corporations which segment their marketingoutreach.

• Our print circulation is based on our analysis of the household value of every housein our delivery area.

• Our newspapers are delivered to families almost all with incomes of at least $150,000. Everypublication also targets the significant number of very high income households in its deliveryarea, with thousands of papers delivered to households with income over $300,000, accordingto IRS and Census data.

• Our readers live in homes almost all with values that range from at least $600,000 to$5 million and higher depending on the specific community. These are the households thatspend the most on discretionary goods and services such as those offered by most of ouradvertisers. We are continuously fine-tuning our circulation as new data sources are developed.

• We reach businesses with a proprietary distribution plan that has been developed over ourmany years in the community and follows the constant changes in business.

• Additionally, advertisers in our newspapers benefit from our popular website, which according toGoogle Analytics, attracts more than 60,000 unique visitors viewing more than 130,000 pagesduring a typical month. When the home page opens, click the community name at the top of thescreen that interests you and better understand these benefits:

• Increased readership as all print editions of our newspapers appear in digitized versionson the websites.

• Confirmed and growing list of more than 10,000 readers who request and receive weeklydigital PDF versions of the printed community editions. Home associations, nonprofits, chambers of commerce, Realtors and other groups also forward these digital editions to theirmembers and associates.

• Increased Web traffic to your Web page from hot link banner ads that readers click to reachyour landing page during the period of your print advertising contract.

(We cannot accept ads inPublisher, Word, Excel, Works or other word processingor spreadsheet program formats.) Please e-mailimages and files as separate attachments to:[email protected].

Please label the Subject Line:Name of Company; Date running; Publication(s);Representative’s NameWhen submitting text for your ad, you may eitherattach a text file to an e-mail or copy/paste your text asan e-mail message. All rates are based on prepresssizes. The published size is 93% of prepress size. Werecommend 200 pixels per inch resolution for photofiles that are approximately the image size that will beused in the publication. For files such as .JPG whichinclude line art and type in addition to photos, theresolution should be 350-400 pixels per inch atapproximately the image size that will be used in thenewspaper.

When creating ads, use CMYK color format. Also, specify just black ink for black or grayscale text and art(unless they are over a color background, in which casethe background color would be included).

Advertising DeadlinesSpace reservations: Wednesday by close of business,in week before publication. Closing dates for sub-mission of ad content: Ads requiring proofs: Thursday,3 p.m.; Ads not requiring proofs: Friday, 12 noon, inweek before publication.

Typeface Recommendationsfor Designers and AgenciesThese specifications are designed to improvethe quality of newspaper reproduction byproviding guidelines for advertisers, design-ers/agencies, prepress & printers. These speci-fications are adapted from the NewspaperAssociation of America (www.naa.org).

For clarity and readability, 10 point or largertype is recommended in newspaper advertis-ing. Four-color text is never recommended. Ifcolor text is used, font size should be greaterthan 24 points and NOT have fine serifs/lines.Reverse type should not be placed in processcolor. If using reverse type with more thanone color, font size should be greater than 24points and should not have fine serifs/lines.

Process-color type not only may lose defini-tion, but registration variances will likelymake the type blurry. Sans Serif typefaces arerecommended. They reproduce clearly andare easy to read. Typefaces with thin or deli-cate serifs/strokes and non-uniform charactersor line thickness are not recommended. For a serif font, Times Roman is recom-mended, at a minimum size of 12 points.Due to the ink/newsprint relationship, smalltype & fine serifs may lose their definitionwhen reproduced on press.

Our printers will NOT accept responsibility forclarity and readability for ads submitted withtype sized 8 points or less.
