I Can POEM BY KEVIN NOWAK
I am so very focused,On what it is I need to do.I am focused on beating this.I am focused on getting through.I am focused on my battle. And I am focused on my fi ght,Focused on using all my strength,Focused on using all my might.A victory over cancer,That is my ultimate plan,And when it comes to getting it,I know that I can.I can keep my persistence,Of this I am very sure,Because I am prepared to last,I am prepared to endure.
I can keep my optimism.I can keep my spirit. When cancer puts up a wall,I am going to clear it.I can accomplish the impossible,Accomplish the unbelievable.I can do the amazing.I can do the unachievable.I can overcome this cancer,And overcome its pounding.I can take on this cancer,And do the astounding.A victory over cancer,That is my ultimate plan,And when it comes to getting it,I know that I can.

Your support this Relay season
has been absolutely phenomenal!
When we started planning this
year’s event, we set our fundrais-
ing goal at $47,500. Thanks to your
generosity, we met that goal April
1! We then stretched our goal to
$50,000, and within four days you
helped us smash that as well! Your
donations are going to do many
great things, including getting can-
cer patients to and from treatment,
providing a “home away from
home” when receiving treatment
far from home, and funding vital
research to fi nd the cure.
We invite you to join us from 6
p.m. to midnight Friday, April 26,
as we come together to fi nd a cure.
Our teams will be serving delicious
food and snacks all evening long,
and some of the best entertainment
you can fi nd in Grimes County
will be on hand to keep the energy
high! New this year, we will have
several local vendors onsite offer-
ing a variety of goods. This is will
be a Relay you don’t want to miss!
Bring your family and friends
to Brule Field and help us Knock
Cancer Off the Board!

We have the courage to be scared, but fi ght anyways …
Cancer.
One word, a thousand scenarios, a mil-
lion thoughts. Each year more than 1.7
million people will be diagnosed with can-
cer in the United States, and more than
600,000 will succumb to the disease or af-
fi liated illnesses. Advances are being made
every day, but many who are fi ghting will
never see a cure.
For the Navasota Fire Department, can-
cer is not going to prevent them from fi ght-
ing alongside one of their own. Charlie
Wellmann, a long-time fi reman with the
department, is no stranger to cancer. He
lost his dear wife, Carolyn, at the end of
March to a battle with cancer.
“On June 2 of this year, we would have
been married 47-years,” said Wellmann. “I
have been married for longer than most of these fi refi ghters have been alive.”
Acting as caregiver for more than fi ve years while his wife battled breast cancer,
Wellmann would soon become the patient. Roughly a month before Carolyn’s pass-ing, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pan-creatic Cancer.
Wellmann has dedicated much of his life to fi re service. According to the four-de-cade veteran of fi refi ghting, he helped with Old Washington Volunteer Fire Depart-ment when they were getting started. But, it has been Navasota that has had the privi-lege of his service since 1974.
“He is a staple of this fi re department,” said Captain David Cooper.
We have the integrity to do the right thing, because it’s the right thing.
Fire departments have a unique shift schedule, with those on-call staying in the fi re house around the clock. Due to this, creature comforts, such as living quarters, are often included in the design.
“We had some tables upstairs, which Cooper rebuilt, and I told him it would be nice to have a nice large table in our confer-ence room,” remembered Wellmann. “The tables that were in there had been around for more than 20 years.”

Cancer has affected many of my family members, friends and loved ones. I Relay in their memory and in their honor. I fi ght my fi ght to raise awareness for early detection and hope that someday we will have a cure for cancer, this inspired me to join Relay For Life.
My family and I Relayed for sev-eral years together before I moved to Texas, honoring those we love, but last year things were different. Nev-er in a million years did I ever think cancer would affect me directly.
March 1, 2018, I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Stage 2 Grade 3. What this sounded like to me was the scariest thing I’ve ever had to face. I didn’t know what to expect or where to start to process it all. We started out with baseline CT scans and echocardiogram of my heart and, low and behold, it had metastasized onto my liver, spine
and ribs. This brought me to Stage 3, due to the metastasis.
When there’s metastasis its now not a sickness but a disease. A dis-ease I will die from. There’s treat-ment, yes, but no cure. This literally felt like a total death sentence.
Started six rounds of chemo, lost all my hair, no appetite, major pain all over my body ... It took fi ve months for chemo rounds. Whew, got through the chemo.
Scans showed some improve-ment. So doctor suggested a couple month break to give my body a rest.
Then in October 2018, I had a very scary incident where I started going numb on the left side. From my feet all the way up to my face. I couldn’t talk. I literally felt the numbness creeping up my leg, arm and face. It was weird. This last-ed four or fi ve minutes, then I was fi ne. Saw the doctor the next morn-
ing before my infusion. He said it could have been a number of things. While I was in the infusion center, my doctor called and said to do a stat MRI following infusion to rule out a possible stroke? (Not how I wanted to spend Halloween!) Results came back the cancer had metastasized into my brain. Wow, I felt life was about to end. This now puts me at Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.
Only option was whole brain radi-ation. I did not want to do radiation due to the horror stories from other survivors that had gone through it. But when I asked statistically what I had left in life, if I had chosen not to do it ... he said three to six months, at best. This was a total game changer. I had to fi ght this and fi ght it hard. I did 10 rounds of radiation straight - wanted to and almost gave up after round six. Lost all my hair - what of the 2 inches that had grown back! I
am so glad I didn’t give up. Radia-tion is truly no joke. Recovery for me was and still is awful. Thanks to my amazing husband and family, I couldn’t have done it without y’alls help! Rescanned end of January 2019 and there is improvement, I’m heading towards remission! Yay, fi -nally a silver lining!
Mid-March 2019 another MRI showed results to be worse and brain has too much swelling and cancer is growing again. So, different chemo here I come.
I’m continuing this fi ght for my-self and my family. I have Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer but ... can-cer will never have me! I will fi ght this into remission! I am a survivor, I am a hero, I am a fi erce warrior! As my good friend Martin “Mark” Yabrra said to me so many times ... NO-ONE FIGHTS ALONE.

I Relay for my husband Bar-ry who went home to be with his Lord and Savior Aug. 17, 2017. We were married for 13 wonderful years and the last 8 years we spent living with cancer. He was diag-nosed with stage 4 colon cancer in June 2009. We were so blessed to have had so much time together af-ter his diagnosis. We continued to live life to the fullest. He never let the cancer get him down. He was such an amazing husband, father, and Pappy. We miss him daily. I Relay in memory and honor of his life and his passion for trying to put an end to cancer once and for all.

Why We Relay...Angel Junkies
We are joining together in
memory of Laura Imhoff, who
lost a very short, aggressive bat-
tle with cancer. Helping others is
something she loved to do and,
therefore, we will keep her mem-
ory alive by doing the same. Can-
cer has touched all of us in some
way and we believe even a little
bit can go a long way! We pray
that one day we can put an end to
this dreadful disease.
– Angel Junkies
I Relay for all of my friends
and family who have suffered
from cancer. One of my fa-
vorite memories from the fi rst
year Relay For Life was held
in Grimes County was being
on a team from Navasota In-
termediate School with Mon-
ica Wesley. She had recently
been diagnosed with cancer
and worked so hard on our
team throughout the evening.
Each year, I wear the pin with
her picture and name on it that
Tracy Owens made for all of
her team members the year she
passed. More recently, I Re-
lay for my little buddy, Otto
Gruner, who passed away from
ATRT, a form of childhood
cancer. On the night of Relay,
I’ll be wearing a gold shirt with
his favorite character, Daniel
Tiger, on it.

Why I Relay... continuedNo-One Fights Alone
Like so many others, cancer has
touched the lives of many people in
my life. Cancer has taken so many
family and friends - some way too
soon, in my opinion.
My mom fought a brave fi ght to the
end in the battle against breast cancer
around 10 years ago. Losing her was
one of the hardest times I’ve had to
face. You may be gone Momma, but
you’re thought about every day.
Four years ago or so, I lost my uncle,
Robert, to colon cancer. He fought a
long, hard but courageous fi ght ... all
the while still trying his best to keep
working on his family farm. This was
yet another loss to our family. We still
think about him daily and miss him a lot.
Three years ago my MeeMaw was
diagnosed with cancer. This was her
second battle. She fought off the ter-
rible demon of cancer the fi rst time,
but this time she fought as hard as she
could but, sadly, lost the battle. This
was almost as hard as losing my mom.
Meemaw was amazing in every way.
She was a very hard working lady and
she sure did love her family more than
anything! I fi nd myself thinking about
our memories and I know you’re up in
heaven loving the beautifulness that
we talked about!
March 2018, my wife was diagnosed
with metastatic breast cancer. It’s been
one emotional roller coaster after an-
other, but she’s strong and together we
will get through this. Together, we can
do all things through Christ.
This is why I Relay – in memory of
those I’ve lost and in support of my wife
and others that are surviving and fi ghting.
– David Perdue
My name is Anniston Grace Da-
vis and although I am just 4-years-
old, my family and I have relayed my
whole life and plus some. The reason
I Relay is because I have had family
members and friends directly affected
by cancer. I Relay in memory of my
great-great-grandma, Mary; my uncle,
Mark(bff); and my cousin, Alexia. I
also Relay in honor of my aunt, Betty;
my uncle, Vale; my great-grandma,
Connie; and for our friend/ extended
aunt, Katie.
I will continue to do my part in help-
ing to fi nd a cure for this horrible disease
even though I am small, I am mighty!
– Anniston Grace Davis
Hi! Relaying to me is getting to-
gether and showing support. Every-
one needs a support system and Re-
laying is a way to show that. Life is
a race and no matter what is thrown
at us, with God, family, friends and
the support of each other ... We will
win!
– Myra Daniels
I Relay to join the fi ght against an
ugly and deadly disease. I Relay for
my family members who have beat
this disease and for my family mem-
bers who left this world because of
this disease. And I Relay for my
friends who are currently fi ghting this
disease. I Relay so we can fi nd a cure.
That’s why I Relay.

Why I Relay...Ain’t Too Proud to Beg for a Cure
Cancer is an ugly, ugly disease. Too many people whom I know and love have been affected by its dev-astation, and it is for them that I participate in Relay For Life. I walk in gratitude for those who fought with te-nacity and came out victorious. I walk in honor of those who fought fi ercely and purposefully but, ultimately, lost the battle. And I, especially, walk for those who are fi ghting the battle right now with courage and determi-nation. I walk so that their burden can be eased some and in hopes that a cure will be found, so they can join the group of victors. I walk because I hope for a world with no cancer. Together we can help make it happen.
– Gail Schroeder
I Relay because as a survivor myself, I know that cancer can be devastating mentally, physically and fi -nancially. It is so hard on your family and friends! As the saying goes, it takes a village to work toward a cure. The Relay raises money to make the cure a possibility. So everyone come out and join the Relay or contribute if you can’t come. It’s easy. You can contribute on line, mail to ACS or give to a Relay par-ticipant! Thank you!

2018 Grimes County Relay For Life “Scare The Pants Off of Cancer”

Wellmann, even though he is not cur-rently in shift rotation for the department, joins the crew most mornings to have cof-fee and “shoot the breeze.” According to Cooper, a conference table per Wellmann’s request was in the plans, but the cancer diagnosis sped up the plans and changed the design.
“Charlie was here one day and things were going bad and he said ‘I don’t think I am going to be able to have a cup of coffee at that new table’ but me, being me, told Mitch we were going to make it happen and have a cup of coffee at the table,” said Cooper.
We have the Moral Character to know what’s right, and do it.
Funds are often tight in public service for extraneous expenditures, but the de-partment set out to make the table for Wellmann one donation and one piece at a time.
“We went to work and were trying to fi g-ure out how to get it done quick, but I didn’t want it to look like the table upstairs,” said Cooper. “It is more sentimental, because it is what Charlie wanted.”
We have the Work Ethic to be assigned a task, and complete it.
They bought a few supplies and went to work to make Wellmann’s dream of a unique conference table a reality.
“The guys started showing up and showing up and showing up,” said Cooper. “We ended up with probably 10 people that fi rst night.”
According to Cooper, they had quite a bit done that fi rst night, including the ladder and axes that crossed for the base of the table and the fi refi ghters thought they “had plenty of time.”
Another bad day for Wellmann made the department know they had to work harder and quicker.
We have Loyalty to our department, we will always defend it.
A chance visit by the warden of the Wal-lace Pack 1 unit resulted in the beginning
of a community mission of love. The war-den said that he “had a guy” and Cooper said he “had a table top that needed paint-ing.” Unit artist James Lowery charged the department the minimum price of $1 for materials for the project and painted the department seal on the table, logos for all businesses who donated and a special “place marker” for Wellmann.
The fi refi ghters had originally gone to purchase wood at Baylor Lumber and Building Company Inc. and their conver-sation was overheard by staff and relayed to owners, Gerald Schomburg and Vickie Kolbasinski, who comped the entire invoice for the project. Then, the Navasota High School Ag Mechanics department asked if they could be a part of the “table for Char-lie,” donating time and effort to design two large metal plaques for the sides.
“It would not have been anything this grand, if people hadn’t contributed,” said Cooper.
... We have Pride in our service, and Pride in our Brother’s/Sister’s.
The community rallied around Well-mann and the department’s cause, pro-viding labor, support, artistic talent and supplies.
“This table is for Charlie,” said Cooper. “He is who we did it all for.”
We have Compassion for those we save ... and those we don’t.
Wellmann has had coffee at “his spot” at the table, designated by a purple ribbon for cancer awareness and a stylized coffee ring.
“I didn’t know all this was coming about, I just knew they were going to build a big conference table,” said Wellmann. “I walked in one day there it was. Surprised the heck out of me.”
For a man who has dedicated his life to the Firefi ghter’s Code of Honor, the project means more than just a few pieces of wood and paint – it is the proof that when you serve others, they will remember and one day return the favor.
We are Firefi ghters, and we fi ght so that others may live, and we die in the pursuit of ending the Loss of Life.
