Hurry! Workshop is almost sold out

Dear California Laboratory Professional,

The CWEA Laboratory Committee understands we have a long road ahead of us to comply with The Nelac Institutes’s (TNI) standards as part of the State’s update to the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP).

We’re here to help each other! The Lab Committee has developed this two day, in-depth workshop focused on TNI topics. These are the TNI topics members told us are their top educational priorities:

Quality Systems and the Chemistry and Microbiology modules in TNI 2016.

We’re proud to bring together a group of TNI experts from across the country to provide in-depth TNI standards training. You requested the topics and we delivered!

We can enjoy great training, networking and some fun in beautiful Monterey together. Get to the Embassy Suites Monday afternoon and join the free Party with the Partners.

The workshop is co-located with the annual P3S Conference so you have the option to register for three days. Attend Monday at the P3S conference and Tuesday-Wednesday at the Lab Workshop. Or register for the two day workshop. The choice is yours.

Important note: to maximize learning and comfort, attendance at the workshop is limited to 50 people. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

The Chemistry Module… Making it Work! Morning of Wednesday, February 13, 2019

Understanding the whys of the TNI standard requirements is half the battle. Once you understand the whys, you can find easy ways to incorporate the standard into your already established QC program - sometimes you can even make the standard work for you. The key is to understand the intent and the added data quality and then create standard procedures and forms to be used across the board that meet the requirements and intent of the standard. The goal should not be to just add more paper-work or make your life more difficult, but rather to be working towards producing data of known and documented quality in the least complicated and most effective way.

After participating in this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe Module 4 of the TNI standard.

• Develop procedures and tools to make this standard work in your lab.

Presenter: Valerie Slaven, Independent Consultant, Valerie Slaven Consulting Services

Valerie Slaven holds a B.S. in Chemistry from McKendree University and is an independent consultant currently working as the Laboratory Director for Analytical Services, Inc, (ASI). As Laboratory Director, she is responsible for the oversight of

laboratory operations and data quality. Previously, Mrs. Slaven worked in a variety of positions at Teklab, Inc. for 11 years and her roles included being an analyst and supervising the inor-ganics, metals, volatiles and semi-volatiles laboratories before becoming Technical Director in February 2014.

Implementation of Volume 1 Module 5, Microbiology: Why and How Afternoon of Wednesday, February 13, 2019

Join the current chair of the TNI Microbiology Expert Committee for an introduction to the TNI Module 5 – Microbiology. During the half-day workshop, participants will grasp the requirements for successful implementation and understand how and why the requirements exist. We will also examine appropriate proce-dures and the standard documentation requirements for compli-ance.

After participating in this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify the requirements for successful implementation of the Micro module.

• Perform appropriate documentation for demonstration of compliance with the TNI standard.

• Demonstrate and describe procedures which are appro-priate for them and that also comply with the standard.

Presenter: Robin Cook, Regulatory Compliance Manager, Utilities Department, City of Daytona Beach, Florida

Robin Cook has been in the environmental laboratory busi-ness for the past 20 years and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida in Microbiology and Cell Science. She is currently with The City of Daytona Beach as manager of the Regulatory Compliance Division. Her previous experience includes working in a single person wastewater plant lab as a tech, both small and medium commercial labs as technical director and senior analyst, and a small municipal lab as super-visor. Robin served for 6 years on the TNI Quality Systems Expert Committee before the formation of the Microbiology Expert Committee.
