Dear Friends,

With deep gratitude, we are pleased to report on the myriad ways that your gifts made an impact.

In 2019 your gifts provided the mobile neonatal intensive care unit ‘NEO ONE’, enabling the highest level of transport care possible for babies in critical need. You provided support for 108 students to attend nursing school, helping to address a critical staffing need for trained nurses. Over $980,000 in life-saving medical care and patient support was provided to our neediest patients, even when they could not afford it, thanks to your generosity.

Private support helps us send patients home from the hospital tomorrow, instead of weeks. It allows our providers to impact community health this year, not someday. It drives cutting-edge treatments in our lifetime, not in our children’s lifetime. The impact of philanthropy is immeasurable.

Your gifts changed lives. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Leaving a legacy of comfort and healing through art.Patients, family members, and visitors to the Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center are surrounded by a message of strength and hope as they walk the hallways lined with paintings, prints and sculpture — one of the only permanent collections of local artwork in the community — thanks to the everlasting generosity of the late Pat Harrington.

Mrs. Harrington became interested in the planned cancer center when the project was announced in 2005 with her belief that it would help many people in the region who were undergoing cancer treatment. In June of that year, she made a major gift to the Centra Foundation’s capital campaign to name the cancer center lobby in memory of her late husband, Donald Harrington, to whom she was married for 60 years. Her unrestricted gift was used for the building of the center.

“My parents were very close. This was her way of honoring him,” said their son, Mike Harrington, chairman of Harrington Corporation, the Lynchburg manufacturing company founded by his father in 1966. “My father died of multiple myeloma. She understood the vision and positive effect the cancer center would have on families dealing with cancer.”

An accomplished artist in both oil and watercolor, Mrs. Harrington was very active in Lynchburg art organizations and served in leadership roles and on boards, including the Lynchburg Art Festival, Lynchburg Art Club, Roanoke Art Show, and the Roanoke Fine Arts Center. She received numerous awards from national art clubs and societies, exhibited her work in many one-woman shows, underwrote local art programs, and continued studying art well into her 80s.

She assisted in founding the Virginia Watercolor Society and was accepted into the American Watercolor Society (AWS), National Watercolor Society, and the Southern Watercolor Society. Her many awards included the Metropolitan Museum of Art award from the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and the Saunders/Waterford award from the AWS.

In 2008, Mrs. Harrington made an anonymous gift to the Centra Foundation toward what would become the Centra Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center Art Collection in her belief in the power of art to bring joy and respite as well as to uplift, strengthen, comfort and heal. That June, a juried art exhibition sponsored by the foundation brought together 131 works of art created by Central and Southside Virginia artists to form the collection. Since then, 33 works of art have been added to complete the collection.

“Pat Harrington’s monetary contribution that enabled the Centra Foundation to purchase over 100 paintings from local and regional artists greatly enhanced the cancer center on so many levels,” said Kathryn Pumphrey, EdD, former executive vice president of the Centra Foundation.

DONOR SPOTlIGhT: PAT hARRINGTON“One of Pat’s goals was to highlight the artistic talent in our area. But even more importantly, she wanted to enhance the environment for patients undergoing treatment for cancer. She believed that being surrounded by works of art uplifted the spirit and would provide many benefits to both cancer patients as well as their families,” said Pumphrey, noting that research has shown that placing artwork in hospital or clinical settings can greatly reduce stress and anxiety as well as help with the healing process.

In a letter dated March 27, 2009, former Centra President and CEO George Dawson wrote in thanks to Mrs. Harrington for her inspiration and generosity, “Many patients and family members undergoing cancer treatment will be comforted for years to come.” Little did he know, he said recently, that he would be one of those patients after he was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in 2011.

“As a patient, the art in the Pearson Cancer Center gave me an emotional outlet and a focus outside of myself and my diagnosis,” Dawson said. “I later learned from Pat that her large landscape, ‘Grandmother’s Garden,’ which is included in the collection, was inspired by a brief brush she had with a possible cancer diagnosis that turned out to be good news when further test results came back. She expressed the emotion of that experience in her painting.”

Dawson added, “Pat was a very generous and humble person with a deep appreciation for the arts and life. Most of her philanthropy was anonymous. The idea of incorporating an enduring collection of the best of local art into the cancer center was hers, but she did not want recognition for it and the gift agreement stipulated that her identity not be disclosed during her lifetime.”

Regional Cancer Center

Along with her passion for the arts, Mrs. Harrington was an enthusiastic supporter of Lynchburg organizations that help make Lynchburg a better community, including Academy Center of the Arts, Amazement Square, Centra, The Salvation Army, and many others.

Mike Harrington explained that it was only toward the end of her life that his mother agreed to be recognized for her gift of the art collection.

“She and my father were humble,” he said. “She did not want to draw attention to herself. In her last year, we spoke several times about revealing herself so she could be an inspiration and example to others. She came to understand that and began allowing her name to be listed with her contributions.”

Mrs. Harrington died on October 28, 2019, at her home in Lynchburg in front of her favorite view of Tobacco Row Mountain.

Karen Bowden, one of Mrs. Harrington’s students, whose painting “Autumn’s Quilt” is part of the cancer center art collection, remembers Mrs. Harrington for her teaching skills.

“Pat was a master at teaching others her techniques,” said Bowden. “She would invite artists over to watch her demonstrate and allow us to try for ourselves in her presence. [“Autumn’s Quilt”] is a result of her magnificent work and sharing of her knowledge.”

Dawson said, “Pat and I really got to know each other much better after I retired from Centra. When she heard that I had started to study watercolor painting, she frequently invited me to meet with her in her studio and gave me valuable advice and critiques of things that I was working on. It was here that I came to realize how accomplished she was and her amazing national network and level of national recognition. We enjoyed our time together and she encouraged me.

“During her life, Pat painted in various mediums, but her real love was watercolor,” he added. “She would often point to

a watercolor she especially liked and remark, ‘No other medium but watercolor could capture that!’ I often remember that and wonder what

medium could fully capture the essence of someone like Pat Harrington.”

Her son would like his mother remembered for her intelligence and generosity. “I located a half-finished crossword puzzle from a newspaper dated three days before she died.”

Pumphrey said, “Pat’s extraordinary contribution to the Pearson Cancer Center, in addition to her contributions of organizing and funding the permanent art collection, will continue to enhance Centra’s state-of-the-art cancer center for years to come.”

NEW ECMO TEChNOlOGy SAVED ChRISTEN’S lIFE, ThANKS TO yOU “This patient surely would have died had ECMO not been available to support her failing lungs.” – Centra ECMO Coordinator Peter Martin

ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, is a new life-saving, highly specialized therapy that allows a machine to replace the function of the heart and lungs when they are failing.

Luckily for 27 year-old physical therapist Christen Laughorn, Centra Lynchburg General Hospital (LGH) had just become a certified ECMO center in November 2018. Little did Christen realize that she would be the hospital’s second ECMO patient and that this new technology would save her life.

It was Christmas Eve when Christen was raced to LGH with a blood pressure of 88 over 44, a severe cough and difficulty breathing. Ultimately diagnosed with necrotizing (flesh eating) pneumonia, Christen had to be intubated and was unconscious for nearly two months while ECMO acted as her heart and lungs.

“ECMO takes blood out of the body, oxygenates it, and circulates it back in, while damaged organs are able to rest and completely heal” explained Centra ECMO

Coordinator Peter Martin.

Christen recalls her experience as “surreal.” “I woke up from unconsciousness expecting to

celebrate Christmas Day with my family only to discover it was actually February.”

Meanwhile, Christen’s mother, Leigh, had spent three nights sleeping in a chair by her daughter’s side at LGH. Exhausted, Leigh was too worried about her daughter to travel home to Danville. That’s when she heard about the Rosemary & George Dawson Inn.

The inn provides affordable lodging to patients, or family and friends of patients,

who are receiving medical care at any Centra location. The inn opened in 2012 and fills a

crucial need in the greater community for patients who must travel far from home to seek care at Centra.

Donors provided $71,000 in 2018 for the ECMO program,

and $18,000 in 2019 for expanded ECMO program

training and education.

Leigh found a home away from home at the Dawson Inn. “The affordability of the inn was a blessing for our family.”

Helping patients stay close to Centra for their care has significant impact. Centra RN Fran Concklin personally contributes to the inn, knowing it “is actually part of the healing process for patients. It keeps their loved ones close and patients know their families are readily available if they are needed.”

Centra Foundation donors stepped in when the Laughorn family needed them most.

“”

Without our loyal supporters, we couldn’t fund critical advances in technology like the ECMO program or patient support services like reduced lodging fees at the Dawson Inn. yOUR GIFTS FUEl CENTRA’S TRANSPORT TEAMSCentra ONE and Centra NEO teams save the lives of our most vulnerable patients. The call came in to the Centra NEO ONE transport team. A premature baby at an outlying hospital was in life-threatening respiratory distress. She needed immediate care in our region’s only neonatal intensive care nursery, located at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital (VBH). The transport team was on its way.

Upon arrival, the specially trained caregivers quickly stabilized the infant’s respiratory condition and transported her to VBH in the ambulance’s isolette, a warm, quiet environment, which allows for monitoring the baby’s heart and lungs. NEO ONE’s high frequency ventilator provided infant-specific ventilation pressures and oxygen levels that have been shown to improve outcomes in newborns with respiratory distress.

The team’s ability to provide crucial early intervention during transport to the Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at VBH helped save this baby’s life —thanks to your donations to the Centra Foundation and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) that funded the neonatal ambulance. The baby’s father, who rode along in the ambulance, expressed how grateful he was to be with his new baby girl that first night.

This critically ill newborn was among the 100 transports by NEO ONE in 2019, including three transports of laboring mothers as well as transports that allowed a premature baby and new mother to travel together in the same ambulance, according to Larry Lilley, MSN, MA, RRT, RN, unit manager.

“The fact that we can offer this service to our community helps to give parents peace of mind that their child will be transported to an appropriate level of care needed for their individual circumstance,” Larry said. “In most cases, that care is closer to their home, even though it may be at a different hospital than the birth hospital. We are committed to delivering care to those in need and are our community’s resource for acute care neonatal needs.”

According to the March of Dimes, premature birth is the number one cause of death of babies in the United States—so getting a preterm baby into an NICU and starting interventions as soon as possible are critical. Last year, VBH had 700 admissions to its NICU. Respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, and congenital defects are the primary reasons for transport of both premature and term infants.

Launched into service in 2019, NEO ONE picks up critically ill newborns throughout an 8,000 square mile area. Previously, these babies would have been transferred to NICUs in Roanoke or Charlottesville.

Centra NEO ONE Transport TeamThe fully customized vehicle is outfitted with the

advanced technologies of an NICU and the medical staff crucial for treating our tiniest and youngest patients. Larry noted that although NEO ONE is a neonatal ambulance, it is also outfitted for adult emergency transportation in unforeseen circumstances such as disasters.

The NEO ONE team, based at VBH, comprises highly specialized neonatal caregivers—NICU RNs and nurse practitioners, NICU respiratory therapists, emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

NEO ONE is the newest member of Centra Transportation Services, which includes Centra ONE air medical service by a twin engine Eurocopter EC135 helicopter equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including night vision goggles, auto pilot technology and room for specialized services such as intra-aortic balloon pump transfers and neonatal isolettes.

Centra ONE provides fast and coordinated patient care and enhanced air medical services throughout an expanded region, reaching from counties south of Charlottesville to the North Carolina border and from east of Farmville through Bedford County. Centra ONE is also able to respond to emergency calls as needed within a 150-mile radius of its base in Lynchburg.

Centra has been in partnership with PHI Air Medical since 2010. Nationally recognized for its safety, PHI provides pilots and mechanics and conducts extensive critical care training for Centra’s flight crew and other staff members. Centra’s emergency medical service teams have extensive experience in intensive and coronary care, open heart recovery, cardiac catheterization, emergency procedures, advanced airway techniques, and hemodynamic monitoring.

The flight crew, which is based at Lynchburg Regional Airport, is made up of a base supervisor, medical director, six registered nurses, seven paramedics, and four pilots.

As of this January, Centra ONE has made 5,078 patient flights in the past 10 years for numerous medical conditions, including STEMI (heart attacks in which one or more of the heart’s major arteries are blocked), stroke, trauma, burns, and pediatric care.

“The use of Centra ONE significantly reduces out-of-hospital time to one-third the time of ground transport,” said Jeff Tanner, director of Centra Paramedicine Services. “For patients where time is a factor in getting an appropriate intervention, the speed to the facility is critical.”

Centra owns helipads at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital, Centra Gretna Medical Center, Centra Southside Community Hospital, and Centra Danville Medical Center. Centra also has partnered with Blairs Volunteer Fire Department and North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department to build remote helipads, which allow for safer operations of the aircraft during the landing and takeoff phases of flight.

Several years ago, the Centra ONE and Centra NEO teams collaborated to provide a faster means of transportation to the critically ill neonate. For infants who need time-sensitive care, Centra ONE works with the NEO team to provide the necessary transport services. All patient care is managed by the NEO team, but a Centra ONE flight crew provider is there to help when the need arises, noted Base Supervisor Robbie Conner, NRP, FP-C, CCP-C. In some cases, Centra ONE can fly in the mobile team in advance of

the ground vehicle to prepare the baby for transport. The Centra Foundation’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Fund funded four flight suits in 2018 and 2019 for the neonatal flight transport team members of Centra ONE.

“Without the Centra Foundation and CMNH, our team may not exist,” said Lisa Davis, BSN, RNC-NIC, RNIV, neonatal transport team coordinator, who also provides critical care to neonates during transport. “Their contributions, and the contributions of our community, have provided not only the advanced, customized NEO ONE ambulance but the two state-of-the-art isolettes, necessary supportive equipment, and flight suits.

“The NEO ONE team allows patients and families from outlying community hospitals to stay closer to their home and support system,” Lisa said. “Many face a multitude of stressors

during this unfortunate time. One of the major challenges can be transportation and the distance they must travel to visit their infant. With our unit

being closer, we are able to lessen this stress.

“For infants born at Centra and needing to be transferred to a higher tertiary center, our team provides continuity

of care. We now have the ability to allow parents to ride with their infant, promoting a trusting

relationship. Without our service to this community, our patients would have to be

admitted to other facilities within the state.”

Your scholarship gifts build our team of trained and compassionate caregivers.Rajah Guthrie always wanted to be a nurse. Her late grandmother instilled this dream in her at a young age when she spoke about the medical care she received at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. Rajah’s grandmother told her, “It only takes that one nurse to make your experience better.”

Motivated to embark on a nursing career and become that nurse who makes a difference, Rajah began working as a certified nursing assistant her senior

year of high school at Centra Oakwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed her work and wanted to further her career.

Rajah enrolled at Centra College of Nursing (CCON) after speaking with program graduates and learning of their positive experiences.

CCON attracted Rajah because it was close to home, had a two-year associate degree in nursing program, and was part of an

organization Rajah was already familiar with.

When reflecting on her time as a student, Rajah admits that while school was interesting and purposeful, juggling multiple responsibilities was sometimes difficult. Not only was Rajah a student and a mom to a young child, she was still working at Centra Oakwood and had a second job.

The support Rajah received from faculty, staff, and fellow students at CCON was integral to her positive

experience. She says, “The support system at CCON was phenomenal, and if it was not for the circle of support, I

probably would not have made it to graduation. There were so many times I wanted to quit, thinking I had to go back to

work because I could not afford school.”

That was when a staff member told Rajah about scholarship opportunities and encouraged her to apply. Rajah was awarded two Centra Foundation

scholarships, which allowed her to quit her second job and concentrate on her studies. Speaking to donors, Rajah says, “You saved me. I am forever grateful for my scholarship support. You made my education possible. Thank you.”

Rajah graduated on December 13, 2019, with an associate degree in nursing. She is grateful to now be working at Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse

applicant in medical surgery.

As Rajah thinks about her healthcare career, it seems she has come full circle. “My grandma inspired me to become that nurse. Nursing school was my dream, and now my future is becoming that nurse who makes a difference.”

jAMES lANIER AND jEWEl RAMSEy CARTER MEMORIAl ENDOWMENT

The Carter Memorial Endowment was established in 2000 from a $2.8 million bequest from the estate of James and Jewel Carter. Natives of Chatham and Gretna, respectively, the Carters lived in Lynchburg for more than 50 years. Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital’s Carter building was named in honor of the couple in recognition of a generous capital campaign gift.

The permanent endowment is designated to support neonatal and perinatal programs at Centra. In 2019, investment earnings provided funding towards the purchase of NEO ONE, a fully customized neonatal ambulance outfitted with the advanced technologies of a neonatal intensive care unit, as well as a neonatal isolette.

KRISE MEMORIAl TRUSTIn 1950, the Krise Memorial Trust was established through the will of Minnie Evelyn Knight in memory of her first husband, Phillip A. Krise. Minnie and Phillip built Kriselea, now known as Villa Maria, in 1911. Phillip died within a few years of the home’s construction and Minnie remarried Floyd L. Knight. The couple renamed the estate Oaklawn and lived there for 30 years.

The perpetual trust, established to provide charitable care for residents of the greater Lynchburg area who could not afford necessary medical treatment, has provided over $660,000 in financial assistance to patients in the past five years alone.

FUNDS SPOTlIGhTThe Centra Foundation administers numerous funds established through the generosity of our donors. Below is a brief sampling of some of the funds providing ongoing support for Centra initiatives, facilities, service lines, and programs.

BRIDGES TREATMENT CENTERThe fund to support Bridges Treatment Center was created in 2004 and is used to provide facility enhancements, supplies, uniforms, therapeutic art instruction, programming, and overnight stays at the Rosemary & George Dawson Inn for the families of Bridges residents who could not otherwise afford to stay nearby for family sessions.

Bridges provides psychiatric residential and educational services for boys and girls ages 6-17 with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues. Established in 1987, Bridges provides a success-oriented, therapeutic environment that includes the participation of the family and the community in the child’s treatment.

F. READ hOPKINS ENDOWMENTThe F. Read Hopkins Endowment was established in 1983 through the will of Frank Read Hopkins, MD, who practiced pediatrics for 40 years beginning in 1931. Dr. Hopkins served as president of the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine, the Virginia Pediatric Society, and was the first pediatrician to be certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Virginia.

The permanent endowment is designated for the acquisition and replacement of equipment in the pediatric unit, and investment earnings were most recently used for the purchase of high frequency ventilators for the neonatal intensive care unit at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital.

CREATE A lASTING lEGACyEach year, donors generously support Centra through bequests, charitable trusts, gift annuities, living trusts, beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and life insurance policies, and through many other planned giving options. Centra deeply appreciates each and every one of these legacy gifts. When you include Centra in your estate plans, you are eligible to become a member of our legacy Society. There is no minimum gift level required for membership. Please consider notifying us of your plans so we can thank you for your gift and welcome you into the society. We would like to recognize your gift, but you can keep your plans in total confidence if you prefer.

Dear Friends of Centra, Thanks to your support, 100 percent of donations made to the Centra Foundation stay local and contribute to the many initiatives Centra executes annually to promote and sustain essential services that benefit our community. Your philanthropy has strengthened the ability of the foundation to assist our health system in meeting the growing needs of the many we serve. The support of our community inspires us to remain steadfast in our goal to lead positive change that improves patient care, when it is needed the most. To help us meet the region’s growing healthcare needs, ongoing donor support is critical to continually improve patient outcomes, acquire state-of-the-art equipment and expand programs that will help shape our community’s health long into the future. I hope you will take an opportunity to read a few of the inspiring stories included in this impact report. You’ll learn how your contributions make a difference to our patients and families. We are truly grateful for you and trust you, too, have personally felt the impact your gift has had on the communities we serve.
