No. 1 — Hilton Head Island is the largest “barrier island” off the Atlantic coast between Long Island and the Bahamas, covering 42 square miles — 12 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. Manhattan is the largest barrier island on the east coast. Hilton Head Island’s perennial subtropical climate makes the area an ideal setting for golf, which is why Hilton Head Island boasts more golf per capita than anywhere in the country.

No. 2 — Hilton Head Island is shaped like a foot and its major resort developments are comprised of gated communities. The Sea Pines Resort, home of Harbour Town Golf Links and two other storied layouts, is located at the “toe,” or the south end of the island. Located at the “heel” — meaning mid-Island and north end — are Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort with its Robert Trent Jones, George Fazio and Arthur Hills courses, and Port Royal Resort with 54 holes designed by Pete Dye, George Cobb and Willard Byrd. Each course is unique in its own right and a must play on any Lowcountry bucket list.

No. 3 — Nearly every renowned golf course architect of this generation has representative work on the island. Along with the names above, add the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Rees Jones, Davis Love III

and Robert Cupp among many others. Just a smooth 9-iron from Sea Pines on the south end is Shipyard Plantation, which offers 27 holes designed by Cobb and Byrd that can be played in a trio of 18-hole combinations. Each 9-holer (Clipper, Galleon and Brigantine) has its own merits, but there is one constant: water comes into play on nearly every hole. Nevertheless all 27 are imminently and enjoyably playable.

No. 4 — There are more than a million rounds of golf played on Hilton Head Island every year. While some of the top courses are private, Hilton Head Island has earned its reputation as one of the world’s finest golf destinations because of its outstanding public and resort courses that will satisfy the palate of even the most selective golfer. Palmetto Hall Plantation features two memorable golf courses designed by Hills and Cupp. Hills sculpted a layout so popular and strategic that it serves as the site of many of the area’s top tournaments, while the Cupp Course is known for its striking geometric bunkers and greens, not to mention its challenging design.

For Hilton Head Island locals, there exists a perpetual spring-like feel in the air. Officially, however, springtime tees off Hilton Head Island’s golfing year. So here

is a quick list of insider information designed to expand your knowledge of The Golf Island’s numerous offerings.

12

No. 5 — Hilton Head Island boasts plenty of culture and nightlife, and fancies itself more sophisticated and upscale than its neighbor four hours to the north, Myrtle Beach. Following a round or two of golf, locals and visitors often hit the numerous bars and restaurants on the south end, although Hilton Head Island’s north end has emerged as a nighttime hotspot of its own. Before hitting one of the many outstanding restaurants on the north end of the Island, golfers love challenging one of the two courses by Nicklaus and his son, Jack II at Indigo Run Plantation. Winding through forests of pine and oak, and along freshwater lowlands, the Golden Bear Golf Club, which debuted in 1992, is a must play.

No. 6 — Hilton Head Island is well- known for its six miles of bike lanes and more than 60 miles of paved shared-use paths. In addition to being a fun and healthy way to experience the island, biking is also great for the environment. An important part of Hilton Head Island’s culture, biking significantly reduces congestion and vehicular traffic. Take a leisurely ride along the beach, or easily bike to dinner and shopping. At Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, you can even play 18 holes at one of its three courses aboard a revolutionary new “Golf Bike” or enjoy a round with

their new TempoTM Walk, a hands-free, autonomous caddie that offers GPS yardage, carries bags, coolers and other accessories.

No. 7 — Hilton Head Island is rich in history. Captain William Hilton, whose original landing spot was in what is now Port Royal Plantation, discovered the Island in 1663. Several miles north of Port Royal is Hilton Head Plantation, the second-oldest private gated community on the island occupying almost 4,000 acres. Hilton Head Plantation offers a wide variety of golf with a quartet of gorgeous layouts: Oyster Reef Golf Club, Country Club of Hilton Head, Bear Creek Golf Club — all designed by Rees Jones — and Dolphin Head, designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby.

No. 8— Golf on Hilton Head Island is truly a year-round choice for recreation courtesy of the Island’s invitingly warm climate. Some locals consider the spring and fall to be the most delightful seasons to take to the tees, but value can be found both in the winter and summer months. For visitors, a variety of custom golf and resort packages for small and large groups are worth investigating.

Sure, watching a PGA Tour event from the comfy confines of your home can be relaxing. But, there are some things you don’t see on TV and really can’t feel on TV. You just have to be there for the full experience.

The Opening Tee Shot. The first hole at Harbour Town Golf Links might be one of the tightest tee shots in the world. Disaster truly looms at #1 with trees and out-of-bounds lurking over both sides of a little sliver of a fairway. This opening tee shot is enough to scare even the most seasoned professional. Hang out down the right side of the fairway and you’ll get up close and personal with many of the players.

The Back Porch at 14. If you’ll venture out to one of the farthest points from the club-house, you’ll be entertained by one of the Tour’s greatest par-3s, and the stage show being put on by the folks on the back porch of the house less than 10 yards behind the green. The house gets its own marshal, just to keep the revelry quiet enough for the players to putt, especially on Sunday with the tournament on the line.

The Atmosphere. Phoenix has its mob-scene and Birds Nest entertainment just outside the gates. Other events have a larger corporate hospitality presence, but nobody throws a party with a mix for young and old, spring breakers and proper golf fans quite like the Heritage. There’s a BBQ venue at the 15th hole with all the fancy food and drink you’d ever want, as well as upscale wine and cocktail venues. There is also a Kids’ Zone between holes 17 and 18 where only those under 15 are admitted.

But on a Boat in the Calibogue? CBS does love to show the nautical connection of Harbour Town and Heritage week. But, while you might get on TV for being on a boat in the Calibogue Sound during the tournament, the view of the action from a boat is not all that hot. Join the thousands that surround the 18th on Sunday and stay for the plaid jacket presentation. Then, look over at that plaid-wrapped lighthouse and remember that it wasn’t even finished when Charles Fraser handed Arnold Palmer that very first trophy, and imagine how far the event has come, a feeling TV just can’t duplicate.

the Sea Pines resort - Atlantic Dunes

The all-new Atlantic Dunes by Davis Love III opened in October 2016 and is a complete reconstruction of The Sea Pines Resort’s historic Ocean Course, the first course built on Hilton Head Island. Love Golf Design, which includes Davis and his brother, Mark, as well as lead architect Scot Sherman, entirely rebuilt holes to accommodate modern shot values and frame scenic corridors. Atlantic Dunes features a pronounced seaside ambience and Lowcountry feel accented by coquina shell dunes and seaside grasses. The project’s goal was to incorporate elements of the surrounding beachfront, along with the area’s bounty of native pines and oaks lining the fairways. The course benefits both visually and strategically from restoration of natural sand dunes, as well as the creation of new dunes blending seamlessly into the design.

Reserve a round on the world-famous Harbour Town Golf Links. Home to the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, this distinguished course is both the crowning achievement of famed designer Pete Dye and design consultant Jack Nicklaus, and a perennial favorite among PGA TOUR players. Put your game to the ultimate test against a collection of par threes that are ranked among the world’s finest, and a par four 18th hole considered one of the most feared in all of golf. Pete Dye’s masterpiece places a premium on finesse, imagination and shot making, rather than strength.

Designed by legendary course architect Pete Dye, Heron Point is nothing short of a modern masterpiece. Golfers will discover all the challenge they desire with its well-defined holes, plenty of movement in the fairways and Dye’s ubiquitous mounding and swales framing target areas. Heron Point completed several course enhancements in 2014 to further increase overall playability and enjoyment for a broad spectrum of golfers. The layout’s putting surfaces were replaced with Tif Eagle Bermuda, the same strand used at Harbour Town Golf Links. Additionally, green complexes and surrounds were softened to provide better lies and a wider variety of short-game options.

Named for its legendary designer, the Jones Course was the first in Palmetto Dunes and remains one of Hilton Head Island’s most popular courses. The course is quintessential Jones, with sweeping fairways, large greens and abundant bunkering. The Jones Course has been named “Golf Course of the Year” by the SC Golf Course Owners Association and is ranked among the best courses in the Southeast. Among its many highlights is a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean from the elevated green of the par-five 10th, one of the island’s most photographed golf holes. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf has designated the course a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its commitment to wildlife.

Since opening in 1986, the Hills Course at Palmetto Dunes has been embraced as one of the Lowcountry’s most unique layouts. The course exudes character, thanks to Hills’ decision to route it along a series of natural dune lines just steps from the Atlantic. The result is an unusually rolling layout with fairways punctuated with swales, mounds and more than a few water hazards. A lack of bunkers is offset by the off-balance lies and ever-present ocean breezes that challenge nearly every shot. Named “SC Course of the Year” by the SC Golf Course Owners Association and named in “Top 30 Best You Can Play in SC” by the SC Golf Course Ratings Panel...testament to its enduring quality and popularity.

Long regarded as one of the Lowcountry’s most demanding tests, all 18 greens of the Fazio Course were enhanced by replanting them with resilient Diamond Zoysia grass. The result is a consistency to the course’s sweeping green surfaces that will assist golfers in negotiating this par-70 gem. With only two par fives, Fazio’s challenge is defined by a series of long par fours with water hazards and strategically placed bunkers. The course’s middle tee settings, playing to just over 6,200 yards, are more accommodating to the recreational player. For lower handicappers, however, the exhilaration of taking on the Fazio Course at its unrelenting best is an opportunity not to be wasted.

Long regarded as one of Hilton Head Island’s most popular golf courses, Country Club of Hilton Head features some of the area’s best greens with MiniVerde™ Ultra Dwarf Bermudagrass. The new putting surfaces have helped secure the semi-private course’s place among the best experiences in the Lowcountry. The club also installed new Better Billy Bunkers from tee to green. Designed by Rees Jones, the Country Club course is an exhilarating test that meanders through one of Hilton Head Island’s most elevated sites. It has twice served as a local qualifying site for the U.S. Open and has received a Four Star rating for excellence by Golf Digest. Owned and operated by ClubCorp, the Country Club also received the Reader’s Choice Award as the island’s “Best Golf Course/Club” by readers of the Island Packet.

Owned and operated by the Heritage Golf Group, the 54 holes at Port Royal offer an exemplary golf experience and a history lesson or two. The Barony Course was designed by George Cobb in the early 1960s as one of Hilton Head Island’s first courses. Accuracy is paramount here, especially on approach shots to the heavily guarded greens. The Robber’s Row Course, originally done by Cobb and Willard Byrd, was redesigned in 1994 by Pete Dye. Sited on a former Civil War encampment it features historical markers throughout the course. Planter’s Row, designed by Byrd in 1984 features small, undulating greens and water in play on 10 holes.

Shipyard Golf Club

On Hilton Head Island On Hilton Head Island

Named as one of Golf Digest’s “Best New Courses in America” in 1982, Oyster Reef enjoys a stellar reputation within Hilton Head Island’s golf community. Rees Jones routed the course as an intriguing series of doglegs requiring precision from tee to green. The well-bunkered, multiple-tiered greens also call for a deft touch. Oyster Reef’s signature, however, is one of Hilton Head Island’s most scenic holes: the par-three sixth is set against the marshes and deep water of Port Royal Sound. Owned and managed by the Heritage Golf Group, Oyster Reef is a former Lowcountry “Golf Course of the Year” and earned Four Stars for excellence on the Golf Digest “Best Places to Play” list.

The 27 holes at Shipyard Golf Club epitomize coastal resort golf: oak and magnolia-lined fairways, plentiful bunkers, water hazards and well-protected greens. Play these George Cobb designs in any rotation and you’ll understand how seamlessly the island’s golf courses fit into their natural settings. You’ll also gain a healthy respect for the local alligator population; they are plentiful in Shipyard, particularly in and around the lagoons on the Brigantine course. It’s just another noteworthy distraction at Shipyard, which hosted one of the earliest PGA Champions Tour events, the Hilton Head Seniors International, from 1982 to 1984. The Club remains a Lowcountry favorite under the guidance of the Heritage Golf Group.

Now featuring newly-renovated greens, bunkers and driving range! Nestled within the scenic residential community of Indigo Run, the Golden Bear course is a product of the Nicklaus Design Group. Jack’s formidable influence can be found in the course’s emphasis on shot values; strategy and finesse are required on Golden Bear rather than brute strength. Mature oak and pine forests frame the gently rolling fairways, and there is just enough water and sand to keep golfers from being mesmerized by the course’s tranquil, park-like beauty. With six sets of tees to choose from (including the 2,949 yard short course) Golden Bear can accommodate the low handicapper, as well as beginners and juniors. Dolphin Head Golf Club

One of Hilton Head’s best kept secrets is now available for play by all golf lovers. The formerly private club in Hilton Head Plantation is a Gary Player-designed gem with what are considered the best greens on Hilton Head Island. Player took advantage of the spectacular surrounding natural preserves and local wildlife to frame his signature bunkers with marshland coming into play on many holes on the front nine. The back nine plays out to Port Royal Sound with gorgeous marsh views and lightning quick greens covered in Mini Verde Bermuda. Now, in combination with Palmetto Hall, Brown Golf offers three courses on Hilton Head Island totaling five courses for play in the Lowcountry.

Hilton Head National

Hilton Head National has earned a solid reputation for impeccable conditioning, attentive customer service and exceptional value. Hilton Head National has its customers to thank for its most recent accolades, TripAdvisor’s “Certificate of Excellence” and GolfAdvisor’s 10th best course in South Carolina during 2015. The opening of the Bluffton Parkway flyover makes it even easier to access from Hilton Head Island. From a design perspective, the course has an impressive pedigree with nine holes from Gary Player and nine holes from former PGA TOUR staff designer Bobby Weed. The result is an intriguing mix of playability and risk-reward calculations that makes Hilton Head National one of the most memorable golf experiences in the Lowcountry.

Island West Golf Club

35

“Pure Golf, Pure Fun, Pure Value” has been the mantra of Island West Golf Club since it was carved through the pines and around the marshes and live oaks just 15 minutes off Hilton Head Island. The pure golf includes elevated tees and greens that provide great views, if you can place the ball in the narrow fairways bordered, and often intruded upon, by protected wetlands.

The Pure Fun can be simplified in one word - Fuzzy. You know that former Masters and U.S. Open champion Fuzzy Zoeller wouldn’t design a course that didn’t provide you multiple opportunities to hit that “wow” shot that will keep you coming back. Lowcountry architect Clyde Johnston assisted Fuzzy in creating this unique layout whose signature feature might be the par-three 8th and 17th holes that play over the same lake to a large double green.

The Pure Value can be found in some of the most affordable rates in the Lowcountry. Online specials are often available on their website. A daily commitment to quality keeps golfers from around the country coming back to this 4-Star Golf Digest classic.

The pines are taller, the bunkering and water hazards more challenging and the views more picturesque at the Pinecrest Golf Club than at nearly any course in the Lowcountry. Rocky Roquemore’s layout (co-designer of three Disney World Courses and working architect at Chi-cago’s famed Cog Hill) gives you every type of Lowcountry look—tall pines on the front nine and a bit more open, but a potentially hazardous back nine that will challenge players of all skill levels.

The par-four 9th and 18th holes wrap around either side of large lake and are easily visible from the most active clubhouse in the area. Chop-per’s Pub has become a gathering place even for non-golfers with its eight satellite-connected TVs for viewing the latest pro and college games in the company of friends, and a varied menu often served up buffet-style.

Another unique feature at Pinecrest is a practice facility so extensive, it has become the home of the International Junior Golf Academy that has sent dozens of players off to prestigious collegiate golf programs and on to professional careers. A double-tee grass practice range, multiple pitching greens, bunkers and putting greens can help any golfer improve their game.

Crescent Pointe Golf Club

36 37

Named the 2010 “Golf Course of the Year” by the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association, Crescent Pointe Golf Club offers a striking balance of beauty and challenge that has made it a favorite among visitors and local residents. The golf course was designed by Arnold Palmer—his only public course design in the Lowcountry—and The King’s signature touches are on display at every turn; undulating fairways and greens and creative bunkering contribute both strategically and aesthetically to the design. Recent enhancements to the golf course and the clubhouse have added even more value to a rewarding golf experience.843-882-GOLF (4653)

Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club was one of the first signature designs by Davis Love III and it helped establish the mainland community of Bluffton as a stellar golf destination in its own right. The enduring popularity of Eagle’s Pointe can be attributed to the consistency of its conditioning and its playability. Forced carries are kept to a minimum and the landing areas off the tee are generous. The shot values are more robust on the approaches to gently rolling, traditionally designed greens. In fact, the back nine at Eagle’s Pointe reflects Love’s reverence for the classic courses of the North Carolina Sandhills, with waste bunkers, native grasses and fairways framed by towering pines.

The Legends At Parris Island

Why has The Legends Golf Course at Parris Island received such rave reviews? It’s “The Experience”! How many golf courses have you played where there are no homes on the property? How many times have you been welcomed by a United States Marine at the gate? Where else can you watch a recruit going through the rigors of boot camp, then watch them proudly graduate…all before your round of golf? Yes, the course has beautiful marsh views, the fairways are lined with spectacular live oaks and the layout is fun for beginners yet challenging for advanced golfers. What makes The Legends so famous is the once-in-a-lifetime experience. Quite simply, there is no other golf course like The Legends.

Ocean POint cOurse

George Cobb, famed golf course designer and consultant to Augusta National, designed Ocean Point Golf Links, a true seaside links course. Ocean Point has been boldly reno-vated to take advantage of the sweeping vistas throughout the course. It now boasts dramatic views of the ocean or inlet on 10 of the 18 holes with the front and back nine both finish-ing against a backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. Golf Digest gives Ocean Point a 4-Star rating and it is a recipient of the Golden Links Award by Corporate Meetings & Incentives magazine.

On the south end of the island is Ocean Creek, Davis Love III’s first signature course. Ocean Creek offers magnificent panoramic views of the Great Salt Marsh and freshwater lakes amid four ancient rolling dune lines that come into play. Wildlife is abundant throughout this picturesque sanctuary. Deer, Snowy White Egret, Great Blue Herons and Osprey present a pleasant distraction in their natural habitat. Golf Magazine named Ocean Creek “One of the top 10 New Courses You Can Play” and Golf Digest awarded it a 4.5-Star rating.
