2019 UC DAVIS FOOTBALL GAME #4 NOTES • 2

and Bison last squared off on Oct. 6, 2007 – their final year as leaguemates – with No. 2 NDSU coming away with a 35-16 victory... Current associate head coach Tim Plough started at QB for the Aggies in that game but had to leave early due to injury.

UC DAVIS LAST WEEKUC Davis exploded to 41 unanswered points in its home opener against Lehigh, ultimately prevailing by a 41-13 final... Senior QB Jake Maier completed 38 of 49 passes for 389 yards and four touchdowns: two to Khris Vaughn, one to Carson Crawford and one to Wes Preece... Maier set or tied two program records in the effort: his final completion (the 23-yard TD to Vaughn in the 4th) marked his 756 for his career, moving him past Randy Wright (2010-13) for the school benchmark... Additionally, the 389 ticks represents Maier’s 17th career game of 300-plus yards, tying the record first set by J.T. O’Sullivan (1998-2001)... The communication major from La Habra went on to capture Big Sky ROOT SPORTS Offensive Player of the Year honors... See JAKE MAIER RECORD WATCH below for more details on the preseason All-American’s upcoming miletones.

Defensively, UC Davis held Lehigh to 58 net rushing yards, the lowest opposing total since Southern Utah managed just 20-for-45 on the ground back on Oct. 5, 2013... Helping this cause were seven QB sacks, the most by an Aggie team since hitting Portland State for nine on Sept. 8, 2007... Sophomore CB Jordan Perryman tied his career high of five tackles (all solos) while redshirt freshman LB Da’Von Frazier paced the Aggies with 3.0 tackles for losses of 9 yards.

‘TIS BETTER TO RECEIVEThe sophomore Crawford totaled career highs of nine receptions and 148 yards for his career collegiate game above the century mark... His 21 for the season has him just four shy of his entire 2018 total... Vaughn’s TD haul on the game’s opening series was his first an Aggie... The junior sociology major from Redlands had 22 receptions scattered from 2016 through the previous weekend at USD but had never scored – even on a career-long 64-yard catch at home vs. the Toreros in 2018.

Preece, a senior TE from Rocklin, pulled down his 19th career touchdown pass... That moved him into 10th in school history, but tops among Aggie tight ends... Howard Gravelle, a 12th-round draft pick back in 1970, scored 18 from 1967-68.

BEATEN BY EATONRedshirt freshman LB and 2018 George Belenis Award winner Nick Eaton enjoyed a complete game against the Mountain Hawks: four tackles (3-1-4), 2.5 sacks for 17 yards, a forced fumble, a QB hurry and two batted down passes... Oddly, that forced fumble served as something of a deja vu: it came on a sack of QB Tyler Monaco, with teammate Nas Anesi recovering... Two weeks earlier, Eaton forced a fumble by Cal QB Chase Gar-bers – also on a sack, and also with Anesi recovering.

GAME 2 NOTES, cont.

ABOUT NDSUThe top-ranked Bison extended its winning streak to 24 games, the third-longest in FCS history, claiming a 47-22 road victory at No. 18 Delaware... Freshman RB Kobe Johnson rushed for 101 yards while freshman QB Trey Lance finished 18-for-23 with 195 yards and three TDs... NDSU piled up 490 yards of total offense while holding the Blue Hens to fewer than 100 during the first three quarters... The Bison have not lost since a 33-21 upset to then-No. 10/8 South Dakota State on Nov. 4, 2017... The Jack-rabbits have provided the closest challenge since, with the 21-17 NDSU win in the Trees Bowl on Sept. 29, 2018... NDSU began the transition from Division II to Division I in 2004, a year after UC Davis... This is the first season under head coach Matt Entz, who previously served as the program’s defensive coordinator... His replacement at DC is David Braun, formerly of Northern Iowa and UC Davis’ D-line coach from 2015-16.

2019 UC DAVIS FOOTBALL GAME #4 NOTES • 3

JAKE MAIER RECORD WATCHThe preseason Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year inched ahead of Randy Wright (2010-13) as the program’s career leader in completions with 756 (Wright had 755)... Entering Saturday’s game, Maier needs:

- 279 passing yards to move ahead of Wright for 2nd.- 28 passing attempts to pass Jon Grant for 2nd- 3 touchdown passes to pass Kevin Daft for 2nd- 66 yards of total offense to pass Grant for 3rd, another 105 to move ahead of Wright for second.

For a full summary of Maier’s ascent up various UC Davis career lists, see page 19 of the official game notes.

MORE ON THE UC DAVIS-NDSU SERIESUC Davis and North Dakota State met for four straight years during the NCAA Division II playoffs from 1982 to 1985... The rivalry also pitted two almost polar opposites in styles: the Aggies opted for a pro-style offense while the Bison featured the veer... Dan Hawkins was part of all four: a player in the 1982 semifinal, then a member of Jim Sochor’s staff from 1983 to 1985.

Each of the first two matchups appeared on the NCAA’s list of “Spoilers” – that is, a game in which a team lost an otherwise undefeated and untied season... NDSU was 12-0 before its 1982 loss to UC Davis; the Aggies were 11-0 before falling to the Bison in 1983... Both games took place at Toomey Field:

DEC. 4, 1982: UC DAVIS 19, NDSU 14QB Ken O’Brien ran for three touchdowns to give the Aggies a 19-7 lead at the break... Stacy Robinson, who went on to win two Super Bowl rings with the Giants, scored on a 69-yard re-ception to put NDSU on the board in that run... The Bison cat the deficit to 19-14 and had a first-and-goal chance with 19 sec-onds to go, but a 1-yard run and two Mark Nellermoe passing attempts sailed wide and long to seal the Aggie win... The down-side: O’Brien was injured in the third quarter and sidelined for the following week’s D-II title game with Southwest Texas State.

DEC. 3, 1982: NDSU 26, UC DAVIS 17The two teams meet again at Toomey Field almost exactly one year after the inaugural showdown... Once again, UC Davis held the lead at halftime, with 1-yard TD runs from QB Scott Barry and RB Dave White providing a 17-10 edge... However, the Bi-son scored 16 unanswered in the second half: three Ken Kubisz field goals and a 5-yard TD run by Chad Stark... NDSU rushed for 253 net yards on 64 carries behind 290-pound LT Dave Piepkorn, who now serves as Fargo’s city commissioner.

THE KEELAN DOSS SAGAThe Aggies’ three-year All-American receiver from 2016-18, Kee-lan Doss was signed as a undrafted free agent by his hometown team, the Oakland Raiders, immediately following last spring’s NFL Draft... In the first three weeks of the 2019 preseason, Doss hauled in 11 receptions (t9th in the NFL) with 99 yards and a touchdown... Doss’ journey through the Raiders’ camp has fea-tured heavily in the 14th season of HBO’s documentary series Hard Knocks... The second episode (airdate: Aug. 13) particu-larly centered around the Aggie organizational studies grad, and even featured his August 5 visit to UC Davis Health Stadium.

Ultimately, Doss did not make the Raiders’ 53-man roster and was placed on waivers... On Monday, Sept. 2, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced they had acquired Doss for their 10-man practice squad... The following Saturday, the Raiders announced

GAME 2 NOTES, cont.

Note: what follows are older notes for the season, as appeared in previous editions of the game notes... They are intended for media members who are catching up on the Aggies for the first time in 2019

FUTURE GAMESUC Davis announced a few high-profile opponents during the offseason, perhaps most notable being USC on September 4, 2021... The Aggies will become the Trojans’ first-ever FCS oppo-nent, leaving only two programs (UCLA and Notre Dame) who have yet to schedule an FCS opponent since Division I split into two subdivisions... Weeks later, UC Davis announced its 2025 season opener at Washington, to be held on September 6 of that season... UC Davis will open at Cal in 2022 (Sept. 3) and 2024 (Aug. 31), and at Nevada in 2020 (Aug. 29).

BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOMENo fewer than four members of the Aggie football staff claim UC Davis as their alma mater: head coach Dan Hawkins (’84), asso-ciate head coach Tim Plough (’08), running game coordinator and O-line coach Tim Keane (’06) and offensive consultant Sam Young (’78)... As such, Hawkins has frequently invited former Aggie players and coaches to speak key events, such as the May 10 Junior Day and a pair of summer QB Academy day camps... Among the regular returners: Bob Biggs, a 1972 All-American who later served as the Aggies’ head coach for 20 years; and the aforementioned Scott Barry, one of Hawkins’ teammates on the 1982 Aggie team.

OPENING DAY QB1In taking every snap of Saturday’s season opener at Cal, Jake Maier became the seventh player since 1966 to serve as the team’s Opening Day starting QB for three straight year... Randy Wright (2010-13) remains the lone Aggie to go four consecutive – coincidentally, he was the starter in the team’s previous visit to Cal... Other three-time Opening Day starting QBs are Jon Grant (2004-06), Jeff Bridewell (1988-90), Ken O’Brien (1980-82), Bob Biggs (1970-72) and Paul Hackett (1966-68)... J.T. O’Sul-livan (1999, 2001) could have matched the feat, but he sat out the 2000 opener... Jim Speck (1974, 1976) also came close: he led the Aggies in passing in 1975, but Dan Carmazzi started that year’s Sept. 13 opener at Pacific.

EARLY BUZZThanks to its 10-3 record and NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 2018, UC Davis opened the season at No. 5 in the preseason national polls from the American Football Coaches Association, STATS, Lindy’s and Athlon Sports... HERO Sports had the Ag-gies at No. 3 behind No. 1 James Madison and No. 2 North Dakota State... Street & Smith put UC Davis at No. 7, which matches the team’s final 2018 STATS FCS position.

Individually, senior QB Jake Maier earned preseason All-America honors from four different outlets, plus Big Sky Conference Pre-season Offensive Player of the Year... The communication major from La Habra and reigning Big Sky Offensive POW also made

the release of controversial seven-time Pro Bowler Antonio Brown, a move that vacated a WR spot on the 53-man roster... This also began a bidding war for Doss between Oakland and Jacksonville, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garofalo, with the Jags even offering the Aggie All-American a full active-roster salary (almost twice the typical practice-squad salary)...

As of Sunday night, the Twittersphere rumors were that Doss had re-signed with Oakland for a $300,000 signing bonus to go with his base rookie salary... Doss effectively confirmed the scuttlebutt on his Twitter account, and the Raiders officially an-nounced his signing on Monday, Sept. 7... He made his NFL debut as a reserve in Oakland’s Sept. 15 game against the Chiefs, but was not targeted on a pass.

the preseason watch lists for the Walter Payton Award (FCS of-fensive player of the year) and CFPA Performer of the Year.

Junior WR Jared Harrell joined Maier on the Preseason All-Big Sky Conference team, senior TE Wes Preece garnered Presea-son All-America acclaim from Phil Steele, while sophomore RB Ulonzo Gilliam also appeared on the HERO Sports Preseason All-America rolls... Finally, junior punter Daniel Whelan earned a spot on the watch list for the Augusta Sports Council’s inaugu-ral FCS Punter of the Year award... This is the same group that has awarded the Ray Guy Award since 2000... A full summary of preseason awards can be found on page 6.

AGGIES ON THE AIRWAVESUC Davis football returned to Sports 1140 (calls KHTK) in 2018 and will continue to air on that station through at least 2020... Scott Marsh (play-by-play) and Doug Kelly (analyst) will pro-vide the call, with Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Famer Scott Barry joining the team for home games... An eventual NFL Draft pick by the 49ers, Barry earned NCAC Offensive Player of the Year and AP All-America honors as a senior in 1984... He also had the unusual distinction of starting in the 1982 NCAA D-II title game, replacing the injured Ken O’Brien.

UC Davis also has half its schedule on TV this year: Cal (Aug. 31) on Pac-12 Networks, Montana (Sept. 28) on ROOT Sports, North Dakota (Oct. 5) on Midco, Cal Poly (Oct. 12), Weber State (Oct. 26) and Montana State (Nov. 16) on Eleven Sports, and Sacramento State (Nov. 23) on CW31... Fans outside the coverage areas of these stations may also stream Big Sky Confer-ence games on WatchBigSky.com.

2018 IN REVIEWUC Davis enjoyed a banner year in its second season under head coach Dan Hawkins, posting a 10-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the Big Sky Conference... The latter captured the Aggies a tri-championship with Weber State and Eastern Washington... UC Davis also advanced to the NCAA FCS playoffs for the first time in program history, taking down Northern Iowa, 23-16, before falling in the final minute at No. 4 Eastern Washington. The Aggies entered the Stats FCS Top 25 in the second week of the season, then made a 23-21-19-16-14-10 ascension into the top 10 by Week 7... UC Davis ultimately climbed as high as No. 4 by the November 5 poll... The Aggies also entered the AFCA Coaches top 10 on October 29 (No. 9), then topped out at No. 7 a week later... UC Davis finished at No. 7 in the final STATS poll, No. 8 in the final coaches’ rankings.

KEY VICTORIES: a 44-38 win at San Jose State (Aug. 30), mark-ing the nation’s first FCS-FBS upset of the year, and the pro-gram’s first since the Aggies beat the Spartans in 2010... A run of 46 unanswered second-half points to erase a 21-3 deficit and lift UC Davis to a 49-21 victory over Montana (Oct. 27) – its first in series history... Smoke from November’s “Camp Fire” forced the 65th-annual Causeway Classic up Interstate 80 the Nevada’s Mackay Stadium... UC Davis scored a 56-13 win over Sacramen-to State on the neutral turf (Nov. 17), clinching a share of the Big Sky Conference championship.

2018 HONORSA total of 11 players earned spots on the All-Big Sky Conference teams, beginning a healthy awards haul for the program... Wide receiver Keelan Doss earned “consensus” All-America honors before getting signed as an undrafted free agent by his home-town team, the Oakland Raiders... Dan Hawkins became the first UC Davis mentor to earn the Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS Coach of the Year... He is just the fourth Big Sky coach to garner that honor in the conference’s 56-year history.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?Despite being a nationally ranked institution of higher learn-ing – including No. 5 on the Wall Street Journal’s list of public universities – UC Davis’ exact name is often cited incorrectly... The full name is the University of California, Davis... The cor-rect athletics appellation is UC Davis: no hyphens, periods or any other forms of punctuation... Common incorrect references have included “Cal Davis,” “U.C. Davis,” “UC-Davis” and even “University of Davis.”... “UCD” is acceptable for agate but should not be used in a story, even in second reference...Please note also that the Aggies’ home field is now UC Davis Health Stadium in all references (see box below)

THE HERITAGE LOGOThe “heritage logo,” which consists of a comet-tail C with a capital A enclosed inside the counter, has become the primary mark for UC Davis athletics... However, as its name suggests, it is hardly a new logo... That particular CA first appeared on the UC Davis baseball uniform in 1958, and remained the team’s cap logo until 1999, when SME Design (now SME Branding) created a family of logos and marks for the campus... The comet-tail CA returned on an unofficial basis during the university’s Division I era, and became an official brand for the athletics department in 2018.

#HASHTAGSIn addition to the more ubiquitous #goags and #aggiepride, phrases called #ShredForce and #UncommonEngineering also appear on UC Davis football social media posts... #ShredForce is a combination of #Shredville (a rallying cry for the offense) and #BlueForce (an Aggie defensive brand that dates back to the program’s Div. II era)... Fans may also occasionally see #Da-visGuys, a nod to the high-quality, high-character people who come through the Aggie program... #UncommonEngineering, a reference to the university’s high academic standards, will also serve as the title of Coach Hawkins’ weekly podcast, which will launch later in the 2019 season... Find these hashtags on the team’s Facebook (www.facebook.com/UCDavisFootball/), Instagram (@ucdavisfootball) and especially Twitter (@UCD-football).

UC DAVIS HEALTH STADIUM

No, UC Davis football has not moved to a new home facility: the former Aggie Stadium has been rebranded as UC Davis Health Stadium effective July of 2019.

This comes as a result of an expand-ed partnership between UC Davis Athlet-ics and UC Davis Health, a collaboration that will feature a new student-athlete performance center located to the im-mediate north of the campus’s multi-use stadium.

With an official capacity of 10,743, UC Davis Health Stadium opened in 2007 as one of the three major facilities funded by the Facilities and Campus Enhancement, for F.A.C.E., Initiative of 1999.

The UC Davis women’s lacrosse team was the first to compete on its Shaw Sports (formerly Sportexe) turf, defeating Saint Mary’s on April 1, 2007. The foot-ball team began competing at UC Davis Health Stadium that fall, after more than a half century at Toomey Field.

The Aggie field hockey team also played at UC Davis Health Stadium before moving to its own facility in 2014, while men’s soccer has contested key matchups on the turf in past years.

UC Davis Health Stadium was de-signed by industry leader Ellerbe Beckett, and built by local firm Brown Construc-tion. It features fixed seating on each of the east and west sides, with grass berm seating – now known as the UC Davis Children’s Hospital Family Zone – adja-cent to each end zones. Beneath the press box resides the Bruce Edwards Club Room, a popular venue for receptions, meetings and other gatherings.

A CRASH COURSE IN UC DAVIS FOOTBALL HISTORY

UC Davis competed in its 100th season of football in 2018, celebrat-ing the occasion with a 10-3 record, a share of the Big Sky Confer-ence championship and an appearance in the NCAA FCS postsea-son. What follows is your crash course on the high points of Aggie football history, for those unfamiliar with the program and its lore.

20-17While the Miracle Game (see box at right) arguably ranks as the most storied victory in program history, UC Davis’ upset of Stanford on September 18, 2005 certainly rivals for that hon-or... The Aggies faced a 17-0 deficit by the midway point of the second quarter, with both Cardinal touchdowns coming on defensive plays... However, UC Davis rallied back with 20 unan-swered points, culminating with a three-yard TD strike from Jon Grant to Blaise Smith with :08 left.

The win marked the program’s first against a I-A team (now called FBS) since 1986, when UC Davis topped Pacific by a 45-41 final down in Stockton.

CRADLE OF COACHESWhen UC Davis faces Southern Utah on October 19, it will stand as a meeting between two Aggie alumni: Dan Hawkins (’83) and Demario Warren (’08)... In fact, the Aggie football program has a storied tradition of sending alumni to Division I college head coaching positions... The list begins with 1970 graduate Paul Hackett (Pitt, USC), rolls through 1973 alumni Mike Bellotti (Oregon) and Bob Biggs (UC Davis), and contin-ues with former Hawkins assistant and 1988 grad Chris Peters-en (Boise State, Washington).

Hackett also takes part in a tradition of Aggie football alums serving on NFL staffs, along with current Green Bay offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and Los Angeles Rams safeties coach Ejiro Evero, although no former UC Davis player has had as long of an NFL coaching career as Myrel Moore, who served 16 years on the staffs of the Denver Broncos (1972-77, ’82-88), Oakland Raiders (1979) and New England Patriots (1991-92)... The Aggie football staff has also served as an early point for such non-alumni mentors as Gary Patterson, TCU’s head coach since 2000; and Rich Scangarello, who earned the post as Denver Broncos OC in 2019... Patterson served as Aggie linebackers coach in 1986, while Scangarello made two different stops at UC Davis as an assistant under Bob Biggs.

PROMINENT ALUMNIIn addition to the coaches list above, UC Davis football has en-joyed dozens of alumni entering the professional ranks, with 17 players earning selection in the NFL Draft... Among the most noted are Ken O’Brien, a member of the 1983 “Year of the Quarterback” draft who threw for more than 25,000 yards with the Jets and the Eagles; Mark Grieb, who retired as one of the all-time passing leaders in Arena Football League history; Rolf Benirschke, who earned NFL Man of the Year honors and kicked 146 field goals for the San Diego Chargers; and Khari Jones, who led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to the 2001 Grey

AGGIE FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS

3 individuals associated with UC Davis football are enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. Ken O’Brien entered in 1997 for his outstanding playing career. Two years later, Jim Sochor earned induction for his coaching career. Most recent-ly, Mike Bellotti entered the CFB Hall in 2014 in honor of his coaching accomplishments at Oregon.

5: The number of conference affiliations UC Davis football has held, namely the Far Western Conference (1925-81), the Northern California Athletic Conference (1982-92), the Amer-ican West Conference (1993), the Great West Conference (2004-11) and the Big Sky Conference (2012-present).

12 UC Davis players have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Award winners, an honor roll that includes Arena Football Hall of Famer Mark Grieb and San Diego Chargers Hall of Famer Rolf Benirschke.

14 Aggies have won CoSIDA Academic All-America honors (now sponsored by Google Cloud), with Ryan Parenteau and Tiger Garcia being the most recent recipients.

20: The Aggies made their first-ever appearance in the FCS playoffs in 2018, making it the 20th overall NCAA postseason berth through all divisions – not counting a pair of College Division bowl games in the 1940s.

22 program alumni have appeared in at least one regu-lar-season NFL game, with four players – Ken O’Brien (1983), Tom Williams (1970), Bo Eason (1984) and Mike Wise (1986) – drafted in one of the top two rounds.

24: Aggie quarterback Ken O’Brien was chosen as the 24th overall pick of the 1983 NFL Draft (a.k.a. the Year of the Quar-terback), making him the highest UC Davis selection in history. O’Brien passed for 25,094 yards and 128 touchdowns in the NFL, mostly with the New York Jets.

25: The only retired number in program history belonged to Sam Paneno, who suffered a severe knee injury during overtime of a September 11, 1999 game at Western Oregon. Due to complications with circulation, Paneno had the lower portion of his right leg amputated nine days later. His posi-tive attitude throughout the ordeal earned national attention. Paneno was bestowed with the NCAA’s inaugural Inspiration Award in 2001. Paneno graduated from UC Davis’ King Hall School of Law in 2005, later established a nonprofit to protect abused and impoverished children and ran a law practice specializing in special education.

30: Last year’s Big Sky Conference title marked the 30th league championship in history, a list that included 20 straight crowns from 1971-90.

37: The number of consecutive winning seasons UC Davis enjoyed (1972-2008) under the guidance of head coaches Jim Sochor (1970-88), Bob Foster (1989-92) and Bob Biggs (1993-2012)

A CRASH COURSE IN UC DAVIS FOOTBALL HISTORY

THE MIRACLE GAME

No two knowledgeable Aggie fans would ever agree on a top five list of the most memorable or significant victo-ries in UC Davis football history, but everyone should have the 30-29 win over Cal State Hayward on Nov. 6, 1971 high on that list (if not on top). The Aggies trailed the defending conference champs, 29-14, in the final minute of play. What follows is the play-by-play from that point forward.

DRIVE START: Steve Nathan’s 30-yard punt return to the Hayward 42 with 0:44 remaining in regulation. UC Davis has no timeouts.

0:44 1-10-H42 Bob Biggs 16 pass to Mike Everly.0:36 1-10-H26 Bob Biggs incomplete pass to Tay Thompson.0:32 2-10-H26 Bob Biggs incomplete pass to Tay Thompson.0:28 3-10-H26 Bob Biggs 24 pass to Mike Bellotti. First down.0:20 1-G-H2 George Mock 2 run, TOUCHDOWN

SCORE: CAL STATE HAYWARD 29, UC DAVIS 20 Two-point conversion: Bob Biggs complete to Rick Fortner.

SCORE: CAL STATE HAYWARD 29, UC DAVIS 22 DRIVE START: Onside kick is recovered by UC Davis’ John Miller on the Hayward 44 with 0:15 remaining.

0:15 1-10-H44 Bob Biggs incomplete pass to Mike Everly.0:09 2-10-H44 Bob Biggs 15 pass to Tay Thompson. First down.0:04 1-10-H29 Bob Biggs 29 pass to Mike Bellotti. TOUCHDOWN.

SCORE: CAL STATE HAYWARD 29, UC DAVIS 28

Two-point conversion: illegal procedure called against UC Davis.

The game clock had expired on Bellotti’s touchdown, so the contest is initially ruled over upon the penalty. However, the game cannot end on a penalty, giving the Aggies another opportunity to attempt the two-point conversion from the 8-yard line.

Two-point conversion: illegal procedure called against UC Davis.

Again, the violation occurred before the snap, thus replaying the conversion from the 13-yard line.

Two-point conversion: Bob Biggs complete to Mike Everly

Everly had to make a diving left-handed catch in heavy traffic in the back of the end zone.

FINAL SCORE: UC DAVIS 30, CAL STATE HAYWARD 29

Cup... Jones also deserves a spot in the coaching section, as he took over the Montreal Alouettes in 2019.

Outside the world of football and onto the screens, Benirschke’s heroics with ulcerative colitis (which nearly ended his NFL ca-reer) and his subsequent humanitarian efforts made him a na-tional hero, although he arguably gained the most public atten-tion during a brief stint as the host of TV’s Wheel of Fortune... Former Aggie safety Bo Eason went from a successful NFL career to an acting career (Miami Rhapsody), with a one-man, semi-autobiographical play called Runt of the Litter earning rave critical response... Tim Lajcik (pronounced “LAY-sick”) an Ag-gie All-American in both football and wrestling, has 60 credits as a stunt perfomer (John Wick)... The UC Davis football leader for onscreen credits belongs to Jim Haynie, who turned his 1963 degree in dramatic art to nearly 100 roles – most notably The Peacemaker, Pretty In Pink and The Bridges of Madison County.

NAMESAKESTwo landmarks stand near the main entrance of UC Davis Health Stadium, both named after key university figures... The victory bell is named for Thomas Tavernetti, a university faculty mem-ber from 1913 to 1930... The bell is mentioned in the school fight song, “Aggie Fight,” and rung after each home win... Across the plaza is a statue of Jim Sochor, who served as UC Davis head football coach from 1970-88... Sochor won 156 games and 17 conference titles in his career, and instilled a belief system later known as “Aggie Pride” (see below).

THE TOOMBefore moving to Aggie Stadium (now known as UC Davis Health Stadium) in 2007, UC Davis football played almost six decades worth of its home games at the corner of Russell Bou-levard and A Street in a venue opened in 1949 and named for athletics director Crip Toomey in 1962... Toomey Field, or “The Toom” as it is known to many an alum, hosted a total of 286 Ag-gie home football contests, including nationally televised NCAA semifinal games in 1977 (Lehigh), 1982 (North Dakota State) and 1983 (North Dakota State).

AGGIE PRIDEThe term has since been appropriated by various entities on the UC Davis campus, but Aggie Pride belief system has its roots with the football program... After taking the helm in 1970, head coach Jim Sochor instilled a new culture: “We knew that every-body we played would be bigger, stronger and faster than we were. We had to find a way. And that way was that no one would be closer as a football team than we would be. Our central values became trust, unity and togetherness”... Bob Foster, the long-time Sochor assistant and later the Aggie head coach in his own right, is credited for giving Aggie Pride its name.

DAN HAWKINS Head Coach3rd Year (6th overall)UC Davis ’84

He has taken his family on vacation to Machu Picchu in Peru. He taught science, jumped out of airplanes, and coached football in 13 differ-ent countries. For Dan Haw-kins, who was introduced on November 28, 2016, those ar-en’t simply items to cross off a

bucket list, they have been opportunities to learn. It’s that thirst for learning, and application of that knowledge, that brought Hawkins, a 1984 UC Davis alumnus who played and coached with legendary head coach Jim Sochor, back to his alma mater.

By incorporating the program’s core principles of uncom-mon engineering, quality balance of life and excellence with class, the Aggies thrived both on and off the field, and built the foundation for the program’s #AGScension.

During Hawkins’ first year at UC Davis, the Aggies won five games against Division I competition— equal to the combined total from the previous three seasons, — and collected five Big Sky Player of the Week awards, matching the total from the last four years combined. For the first time in program history, UC Davis also ended the season as the league’s No. 1 offense.

However, this served as a mere prelude for Hawkins’ second year at the helm: the Aggies went 10-3, captured the university’s first-ever Big Sky Conference title, and advanced to the NCAA FCS postseason for the first time in program history. UC Davis won its first-round game against Northern Iowa in front of a home crowd before falling in the final minute of the subsequent quarterfinal to conference rival Eastern Washington.

Under Hawkins’ tutelage, the Aggies have earned a total of 21 All-Big Sky awards. Receiver Keelan Doss captured the Offen-sive Player of the Year nod in 2017, then quarterback Jake Maier claimed that honor in 2018. Maier was also selected as the Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2017.

For his part, Hawkins earned 2018 Big Sky Coach of the Year accolades, then followed that with an Eddie Robinson FCS National Coach of the Year award. He is the first UC Davis recip-ient of the latter honor, and only the fourth Big Sky recipient in the league’s 56-year history.

In addition to its on-field success, UC Davis football posted the highest APR — a team-based metric that holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes — of any Big Sky program for the fifth straight year when the NCAA released its annual report.

Football student-athletes also enjoy a unique opportunity as part of Hawkins’ program, one rarely presented by any pro-gram, at any level across the nation.

By shifting his off-season workouts to the winter quarter, student-athletes are now able to study abroad, participate in an internship, volunteer or organize community service projects during the spring quarter and summer months. By enabling his players to enjoy the same opportunities provided to the student body, Hawkins has successfully created a culture focused on providing a well-rounded college experience at the sixth-ranked public school in the nation, while competing at the highest level of college athletics.

Hawkins, who also served as a college football studio ana-lyst at ESPN in recent seasons, brings a unique depth of experi-ence and innovative offensive approach back to his alma mater. During his career, Hawkins built Boise State to elite status on the college football landscape and coached in the Big XII at the University of Colorado.

Hawkins, the 17th head coach in the program’s history, is married to the former Misti Rae Ann Hokanson.
