January 2019

Dear Coach,

Welcome to the 16th annual Mohegan Sun World Baseball Coaches’ Convention held in the Mohegan Sun's

newest venue, the Expo Center! We are excited to have you here. Our mission is to provide you with the very best

in coaching education; and again this year, we have secured the best clinicians and designed a curriculum that

addresses all levels of play and a range of coaching areas.

Here are a couple of convention notes for 2019:

- New this year, with our move to the more spacious Expo Center, we've created a new learning area, our new

Demo Infield located in the back of the Exhibitor Zone near the On Deck Sports Batting Cage. Make sure

you take in one of our interactive demos in this space during the convention.

- Again this year, we will offer you post-event access to video of our Thursday, Friday, and select Saturday

(new this year) convention sessions (more than 30 sessions!), so that you can refresh your memory or watch

sessions you may have missed. See the page in this handout for the special promo code, which will enable

you to purchase all sessions at a greatly discounted rate.

- To provide you with the latest event information, we offer an event app that features the convention schedule,

a list of exhibitors, a digital version of the event handout and much more. Search Baseball Coaches

Convention in the app stores. If you'd like to receive real-time event updates and news, please allow us to

push event notifications to your device of choice.

- We will offer a Talking Baseball Panel Discussion on Friday evening from 5:45PM - 7PM in Break-Out 1.

Our panelists will discuss the game today, provide insights into what and who motivated them, and finish by

taking questions from the audience. It should be a terrific final session of the day.

Our convention is more than just three days of coaching instruction; it is a chance to bounce ideas off your fellow

coaches and learn from each other. Our staff, exhibitors and guest speakers will be available to you throughout the

convention. Please don’t hesitate to introduce yourself, ask a question or provide your own perspective on the

game.

We thank all of our excellent presenters, who have found the time to share their knowledge of and passion for

America's game. A special thanks to our title sponsor, Mohegan Sun; and to all of our sponsors and exhibitors,

whose support helps make this event possible.

Enjoy the convention and if you have any thoughts on how to improve next year’s Mohegan Sun World

Baseball Coaches’ Convention, please let us know. We wish you all the best with your upcoming season!

Yours in baseball and coaching,

TOPIC: Clutch Coaching: How to Be Your Best When It Matters the Most

PRESENTER: Paddy Steinfort, Philadelphia 76ers Performance & Leadership Director & Past

Toronto Blue Jay Mental Performance Coach

www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com

As coaches, we are often expected to have all the answers – both technically, tactically and sometimes even socially - especially when they are needed the most. But how do we make sure we are able to connect, reflect and redirect players and other staff when the stakes are the highest?

Based on decades of working with elite teams, from College to Olympic levels, I have identified the three biggest barriers to coaches being present for their players – the AAA team that we all play our own Inner Game against – as well as proven ways to overcome these inner obstacles time after time.

Using stories from working with coaches in the NFL, NBA and all levels of an MLB development system, I will unpack what it means for YOU to be your best, during the times of the season, week and even day that it matters most.

During this session:

What the key emotional barriers are to great coaching

Who the most effective coaches have modeled themselves on

When the best time to give feedback is (and also the worst time)

How to give negative feedback with positive results, even when confidence is low

Why some players don’t respond the way you want them to – and how to change that

Where most coaches go wrong when dealing with “problem” players

By the end of this session you will hopefully have the blueprint of your own coaching formula for success, and a clear path towards creating your own Trademark style that players will love to follow.

SESSION: Thursday, January 10, 2019, 7:15PM – 8:00PM: Break-Out #1

Resilience and Focus in the Face of Adversity, Anxiety and Distractions

PRESENTER: Paddy Steinfort, Philadelphia 76ers Performance & Leadership Director & Past

Toronto Blue Jay Mental Performance Coach

www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com

While most of us have spent time as players, at varying levels of competition, one thing remains the same now – we can’t get out there and do it for players, and we can’t protect them from failure. So how do we arm them with the mental and emotional strength to handle whatever the game (and life) throws at them?

Using numerous studies with the best minds in the world of resilience, along with experience helping thousands of athletes and performers, I have established a Focus Framework that can help keep any performer on track – so that we can effectively bend when we need, but NEVER break until we achieve.

Using stories from working with players in the NFL, NBA and all levels of an MLB development system, I will explore with you the psychology of failure, fragility and focus, and from there help you build a better skill set that arms players with the mindsets they need to thrive in today’s environment.

During this session:

What single thought is the biggest predictor of resilience today?

Who taught the Resilience Training program for the US Army, and how?

Two exercises that help a player “practice” protecting themselves from bad thoughts

How to build the focus muscle for performers in any field

The simple shortcut to plan for adversity that makes them more likely to cope

Ways to build supportive groups so that it isn’t all left up to you

By the end of this session you will have seen tools that can work immediately in your own teams, and you’ll walk away with a framework that any player can use to help on the mental side of their game.

TOPIC: Outfield Play: Outstanding in the Field

PRESENTER: Greg Sullivan, Assistant Coach, Boston College

www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com

I. Misconceptions

1. EXCUSE! – Get better anywhere- Gym/Stage/Hallway-wherever!

2. Anyone can play the outfield

3. Need to get live reads

II. How to become a good outfielder

1. Take Pride in it. Every day’s- 10 minutes- It doesn’t take that long.

2. Answer the why. Teach them the game-

3. Work at it. Zoo vs. Jungle

III. Principles – very important

1. Catch the ball

2. Keep double play in order!!!!!

i. Don’t give extra bases -Very few players throw out players at 3rd base from RF. Control

batter/runner. “Split the runners” or control that back runner/batter runner

ii. WAY TO MANY PLAYERS TRY TO THROW RUNNERS OUT AT THE PLATE

Example: 1st and 3rd 1 out is way better then 2nd and 3rd 1 out.

3. Throws infielders can handle- “Firm not hard” Quick “cut-able” throws.

4. Always some place to go. Old Little League saying.

IV. Pre-Pitch

1. Positioning by hitter/pitcher/count- Stay athletic

i. Know situation – score, inning, outs, batter, runners on base, etc- Flesh Signs from Middles.

ii. Ready Position/Fielding Position

iii. With 2 K’s “Two steps in and two steps over”

V. THE MOST important Drill in Baseball

1. Toss and Catch:

i. Habits are formed during your games of toss and catch. Check off all your fundamentals in

first 13 mins of practice.

1. Every day drills into throwing program.

ii. Long toss- Not up in the air- “Quick ‘cut-able’ throws. Stay closed protect arm.

2. Throwing Program: 13 minutes: 120 feet(Back edge of the infield ring)

i. 2 minutes @ 60’

ii. 3 minutes @ 90’ **Every days**

iii. 3 minutes @ 120’

iv. Max Throw- 3 minutes at max throw- Not every day- 2-3 days a week.

v. 2 minutes- working back into 65-75’ 30 seconds of quick hands.

VI. Ground Ball Drills

VII. Fly Ball Drills

VIII. Batting Practice

TOPIC: Team Culture: Learning From Experience

PRESENTER: Mike Gambino, Head Baseball Coach, Boston College

www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com

What is culture?

Why is it important?

Specifically for us – why it is crucial

What we talk about as far as our culture

How our Jesuit values help shape our culture

Worry about who you want to be before you worry about what you want to accomplish

Building of a culture

Takes time

Needs constant attention (quote of the day)

Coaches and support staff

Coach York – “you don’t just build culture, you recruit culture”

Pete and how he affected our culture

Where the culture had gotten – brotherhood

2015 example – Chris Shaw (video)

2016 example – Nick Sciortino

Captain’s practice

Culture study from Humanex

2016 example – Justin Dunn (video)

2017 example –bad start, injuries, “we suck at leaving”

What happened in 2018 – mistakes I made that made culture worse and us stink

Took it for granted – thought culture was embedded

Training next generation of leaders

Didn’t do a great job continuing to explain the “why” in all things

Took my foot off the pedal a bit- let small things slide

Made some decisions based on winning games instead of culture

Fall of 2019 – plan going forward

TOPIC: Ultimate Year Long Workload and Throwing Program for Pitchers

PRESENTER: Dan Pepicelli, Head Baseball Coach, Cornell University

www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com

What we are going to cover… 1. Build the Calendar first, then fill in the details 2. Learn a system for building your own calendar, rather than deciphering ours 3. Defining phases that make sense 4. Review each phase – philosophy and specifics

First Step; Build a rough draft calendar Consider the following…

1. Vacations 2. Start of and end of season 3. Mandatory no practice times 4. Count Down – number of weeks until opening day

Define Phases with Themes and Goals

1. Answer the question; What’s important now? 2. Refine your focus… tough to say you are training for physicality, horsepower / velo, command, skill,

mentality,…all at the same time! 3. Our Phases;

1. Intro / Eval Phase 2. Monster Phase 3. Character Phase 4. Iron Phase 5. In Season Competition Phase

Intro / Eval Phase (8/23-9/29)

1. Learn the flow of practice, how to read a practice plan, expectations 2. Learn Basics of weight room – Who are you now and where do you need to improve? 3. Evaluate them in competition and practice – prioritize

Monster Phase (9/30-12/15)

1. 5 Weeks No Throw – Try to avoid the term “Shut Down”…Still a training phase! 2. Focus is on getting “big and physical” – frequency and intensity in the weight room 3. After 5 weeks, begin 6 week velo ramp up – FOCUS IS ON HORSEPOWER!! 4. Performance Psychology including goal setting happens here 5. Taper for one week during Thanksgiving – Play catch to feel

Character Phase (12/16 – 1/19)

1. Independent Work – Home for Winter Break…Who are you when no one is watching? Iron Phase (1/20 – 2/22)

2. Preseason period emphasizing competition in all things 3. Pick the “105 guys”, the rest are relievers 4. Review it, Rep it, Compete at it

In Season Competition Phase (2/22 – ?)

1. Maintain your weight and strength - Intensity stays high but volume may be reduced 2. Reconfigure Pitching Cycle to fit the individual (Pen day?) 3. Have them prepared to work as independently as possible that way there are no excuses…the work

gets done! 4. Post a plan on game days… Assume nothing - Who’s hot that day? 5. Long Toss prior to game, Flat ground work 6. Drill work during BP

SESSION: Friday, January 11, 2019, 11:15AM – 12:05PM: Break-Out #3

1. Video introduction.

2. The death of backyard baseball, and why we need to resuscitate it (an argument for putting the game in the hands of the players).

3. A coach’s baserunning journey.

4. Being an affective base-stealer means being comfortable off the bag:

Technique for right-foot shuffle-shuffle 12-foot steal leads at 1B.

7. Stealing home:

How do we know we have it?

Technique for stealing home.

8. Drill-work for attacking left-handed pitchers:

One-way leads and secondaries.

Stealing vs. first-movement.

When stealing vs. first-movement isn’t a great idea.

Hit-and-run, run-and-hit technique + find the ball.

Delay vs. LHP.

9. First-to-second without bunting:

Blind dirtball reads (vs. conventional).

Delay steal.

Run-and-hit situations.

TOPIC: Get the Most Out of Your Bullpens and Side Sessions

PRESENTER: Dan Pepicelli, Head Baseball Coach, Cornell University

www.BaseballCoachesClinic.com

Philosophy 1. 100 % investment from pitcher – While throwing effort is 75%, focus and execution will

be 100% 2. Chart for command accountability 3. We communicate expectations by our preparation prior to the pen

Before Practice – Partner up and Write your Blocks 1. Warm-up is approx. 20 pitches followed by 4-5 Blocks of 5 pitch at bats

Pre-Practice Setup – Set the Tone 2. Use the No Throw Guys - Tarp Off, Order Posted, Video Tripod Out 3. Staff Environment – If you’re nearby, you are quiet and focused on the pitcher 4. Grey Guy – Batting Dummy 5. Chair behind mound to chart 6. Low Strike String

Catcher Expectations

On Time – Know the practice plan

Execute the signs

Blocking and receiving

Post pen feedback

Where to watch the pen as a coach 1. Behind the mound = mechanical feedback while the pitcher is throwing 2. Behind the plate = evaluate movement / stuff, while also tracking eye movement of pitcher. Also

allows you to engage catcher on setup after sign.

Regions of the Mound 1. Diagram – Front and Back 2. Back to Back Miss Rule 3. From the rubber BACK = vent, flush breath, positive affirmation 4. On the rubber = Best focus, next pitch mentality (or step back off)

Pre-Throw Routine 1. Shoulder Tube, Jaeger Bands, Wrist Weights, Plyocare Throws

Lead up Drills 0 – 90 ft out 2. Two Knee / Standing 10 O’clock, Finishing Drill, Knee Over Knee, Glove up Drill 3. Finish with extension long toss and a short flat ground

Pyramid Warm-up 1. Warm-up- Pyramid = 12 Fastballs. 3 Spin, FB, 3 CHG, FB = 20 pitch warm-up total

Throw 4-5 blocks that are pre-scripted or Open Gym 2. Signed in from your partner charting (R2 signs are an option), Circle hits and write in misses 3. Fifth pitch of every block is used to expand

Post Throw 1. Shake catcher’s hand and get feedback- Add coach feedback 2. Sign in pen for partner, then complete Met Con Work (1:3 work to rest) together 3. Review Chart and Discuss Drill day with Coach – Quick note on ring of cards 4. Plyocare rebounder, band, Waiter Walks, Upward Toss, Side Toss (Driveline Recovery Program)
