NEXT FALL, when your friends ask what you did during the summer, you can say… These are just a few of the options available to you at the 2019 BIG RED ACADEMIC CAMPS to be held this June. These career exploration camps are a chance for you to explore the UNL campus, meet people from across the country, spend time investigating an interest or potential career and have lots of fun. 2019 BIG RED ACADEMIC CAMPS will be hosted by Nebraska 4-H and UNL faculty members in various academic areas across campus. After spending several fun-filled days exploring a specific topic like filmmaking or veterinary science, we’ll invite your family to join you for a special “capstone event” where you can showcase your work. The 4-H Youth Development program abides with the non-discrimination policies of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the United States Department of Agriculture. BIG RED SUMMER ACADEMIC CAMPS are residential camps; ALL housing and food will be provided for all participants throughout the duration of the camp. Space is limited and camps will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited scholarships are available to attend all Big Red Summer Academic Camps, Significant Scholarships may be available for select camps. Discover ENGINEERINGDuring this one-week residential summer camp, high school students will learn to leverage the power of engineering and science to solve global challenges in energy, water, and urban infrastructure, as outlined in the report entitled 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering by the US National Academy of Engineering. This program uses a multi-disciplinary approach to problem-solving while exploring the various fields of engineering such as mechanical, civil, electrical, biological systems, and more. The session will also involve field visits to various on-campus labs and facilities such as the Tractor Test Lab, the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility, and the Super Computing Lab, as well as off campus excursions to local industry to enrich students’ understanding of the practical relationships between classroom work and the real world. Communication and teamwork will be integral parts of the students’ camp experience. The camp will be led by faculty and staff from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, College ofEngineering. Discover OUTDOOR NEBRASKADo you enjoy the outdoors? Are you interested in learning about conserving our natural resources? In Outdoor Nebraska you will experience, firsthand, how the systems in the natural world work together and how changes to these systems have far reaching consequences. Campers get to spend quality time outdoors and should come prepared for the elements. Taught by the School of Natural Resources.Related Careers: Park Ranger, Conservation Officer, Environmental Scientist, Natural Resources Manager.

Discover UNICAMERAL YOUTH LEGISLATUREDo you want to learn what it’s like to serve as a state senator? The Unicameral Youth Legislature is a four-day legislative simulation for current high school students who take on the role of a lawmaker. Student senators sponsor bills, conduct committee hearings, debate legislation and discover the unique process of the nation’s only unicameral. The conference is organized by University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension 4-H Youth Development. The Clerk of the Nebraska Legislature, through theUnicameral Information Office, serves as a technical consultant for the Unicameral Youth Legislature. Discover FILMMAKINGPut your summer on the big screen! This movie‐making adventure will allow you to actually make a film and spend time in the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. You’ll have access to award‐winning faculty and see how motion pictures really work. Participants are encouraged to bring their own video cameras, if available. Taught by the University of Nebraska—Lincoln, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film.Related Careers: Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Computer Animation,Visual Effects, Film Editor.

Discover TEACHINGCome learn how you can develop into a world-class teacher! The Discover TEACHING camp is a special program that will challenge a group of future teachers to work with kids and start considering how best to transform schools to meet the needs of children and youth in the 21st Century. The reality is that the way we do school hasn’t changed much in over 100 years, and it does not serve all students equally. As our nation is becoming more diverse, teachers must be more inclusive of all cultures. In this camp, we will experience and discuss identity, culture, and innovation. We aim to recruit students from all backgrounds so we can learn more about each other and expand our understanding of the future of education. Applications can be found atbigredcamps.unl.edu. Discover ANIMATIONA truly playful way to learn animation from LA-based animators! In this animation camp, students will gain a deep understanding of how to control movement at the frame by frame level both under a camera and in a computer. We will walk through the principles of animation using a variety of animation techniques including optical toys, flipbooks, under camera techniques like clay and paper, as well as basic digital processes. We’ll also watch a variety of animated films both historical and contemporary and talk about how they were made. Taught in collaboration with the Calibraska Arts Initiative by LA Based animators and animation students from Los Angeles, CA. Work from the class will be screened on the “CUBE” in the Lincoln Haymarket. No animation or drawingexperience necessary, but a spirit of exploration is required!Related Careers: Animator, Editor, Storyboard Artist, Visual Development, Independent Filmmaker, Director, Motion Graphics Artist, Stop-Motion Animation.

Discover VETERINARY SCIENCEExplore various aspects of veterinary medicine and discover what veterinarians need to know to help sick animals. Learn about anatomy, bacteriology, parasitology, and surgery. Learn how to give an animal a physical examination. Learn from scientists and veterinarians studying how animal diseases are diagnosed, treated and prevented. Learn about an exciting career as a veterinarian. Taught by the University ofNebraska—Lincoln, School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.Related Careers: Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technology, Pharmaceutical Sales and Development, Government Services.

Discover WEATHER & CLIMATE SCIENCECome and find out how scientists observe and forecast the weather as well as monitor the changing climate. During the week, campers will use instruments to make their own weather observations; learn how to forecast the weather; visit with National Weather Service forecasters; learn about the local weather and climate of Nebraska from tornadoes to blizzards; explore how drones are used in research; and, learn about storm preparedness. We will conduct experiments throughout the week inside the classroom as well as outdoors to demonstrate basic weather and climate processes. We will also explore weather and storm photography. Participants will get to meet actual scientists and learn more about weather and climate related careers. Spend the week with other students who enjoy weather and science just like you! Hosted and taught by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department, Geography Program and the College of Arts and Sciences.Related Careers: Weather Forecaster, Television Weathercaster, Weather and Climate Researcher, Applied Climatologist, Climate Data Resource Specialist, Emergency Management, Environmental Protection Agency, Storm Chaser, Science Teacher.
