College Admissions

Admission at most of the state colleges and universities (4 year schools) is granted to students who have graduated in the upper 50% of their high school graduating class or who have obtained at least a score of 22 on the ACT test. Some of the universities have stricter academic requirements. Students not meeting the criteria may be considered for admission under each university’s conditional/provisional admission policy, which considers potential for success in college and other factors. Students who wish to enroll in a Minnesota State University will need to demonstrate completion of the following college preparatory curriculum while in high school or their competency equivalent.

● English - 4 years (Composition, literature)

● Mathematics - 3 years (2 years of algebra and one year of geometry, one year higher math)

● Science - 3 years (1 year each of a biological science and physical science, and all courses with labs).

● Social Studies – 3.5 years (including 1 year of World Geography & U.S. History).

● World Language - 2 years of a SINGLE world language

● World Culture or Fine Arts - 1 year. These requirements are similar to the University of Minnesota and many private colleges in Minnesota (EXCEPT--The University of MN system- ex: UMD and the main U are requiring four years of Math). Students should check with the college they wish to attend for their individual requirement

NCAA Eligibility Requirements for Student Athletes

If you’re interested in playing Division I or II sports, there are a few things you should know. The NCAA (National College Athletic Association) has academic standards you must follow to be a student athlete. To play sports in a Division I or II college, you must complete at least 16 core courses while in high school with a qualifying GPA and test scores.

Divisions I and II Initial-Eligibility Requirements Core Courses NCAA Divisions I and II require 16 core courses. See the charts below. *Beginning August 1, 2016, NCAA Division I will require 10 core courses to be completed prior to the seventh semester (seven of the 10 must be a combination of English, math or natural or physical science that meet the distribution requirements below). These 10 courses become "locked in" at the start of the seventh semester and cannot be retaken for grade improvement. *Beginning August 1, 2016, it will be possible for a Division I college-bound student-athlete to still receive athletics aid and the ability to practice with the team if he or she fails to meet the 10 course requirement, but would not be able to compete. Test Scores Division II requires a minimum SAT score of 820 or an ACT sum score of 68. The SAT score used for NCAA purposes includes only the critical reading and math sections. The writing section of the SAT is not used. The ACT score used for NCAA purposes is a sum of the following four sections: English, mathematics, reading and science. When you register for the SAT or ACT, use the NCAA Eligibility Center code of 9999 to ensure all SAT and ACT scores are reported directly to the NCAA Eligibility Center from the testing agency. Please note: Test scores that appear on transcripts will not be used.

Students with Unique Needs

Barnum High School is committed to providing the best educational environment for all students. Students with Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) or 504 Accommodation Plan are encouraged to review the information in this course description catalog with their case manager as they are selecting classes.

Selecting a College: If you are a student with a learning or physical disability, the Pacer Center offers some tips on preparing for college:

● Make a list of questions to ask a college’s disability services office.

● Make a list of classes and modifications you need.

● Speak to other students with and without disabilities.

● Call the college disability services office and/or visit the college to find answers to your questions.

● Tell the disability services office which modifications you can provide for yourself and which you expect the college to provide. The most important skill you can have is the ability to express your needs and assert yourself. For more information, contact the Pacer Center at (612) 827-2966 or www.pacer.org.

Not only will this semester- or year-long course prepare students for AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles, but it will teach students how to think computationally and solve complex problems, skills that are important for every student. Introduction to Computer Science is a great starting point for schools starting up a new computer science program, or seeking to enrich an existing CS program or course.

The following courses will prepare a student in grades 11-12 to take the Advanced Placement test. Depending on the score earned on this end of the year test is dependent on whether the college of the student’s choice will award college credit:

Students will develop the computational thinking skills needed to fully exploit the power of digital technology and help build a strong foundation in core programming and problem-solving. Engaging Students New to Computer Science: The course is designed to engage students from diverse backgrounds and those new to computing – and excite students with a curriculum that focuses on the core ideas that shape the landscape of computer science and its impact on our society. Project-Based and Collaborative Learning Approach: Using project-based lessons and materials throughout, students will work to address real-world problems and design solutions to put computational thinking into practice. These culminate in a capstone Performance Task project where students can demonstrate what they've learned - to become creators, instead

of merely consumers, of the technology all around them.
