Acrylic Painting: Saturdays 9:30-11:30 am John D. Spreckels Center Learn to use acrylic paints from the former art director of design at DC Comics. This class will focus on painting fundamentals, monochromatic and full-color schemes. Demonstrations will be provided. Students will learn fundamental painting techniques including how to hold the brush, the use of water as a medium and how to control paint. Supplies are not provided; call the front desk for the supply list. Drop in fee per class, space permitting: $35/$30 resident discount Basics of Mosaic Art: Thursdays 5:30-8:30 Coronado Adult Education An eye for detail, patience, and a neat hand are helpful in this medium. After covering the ‘basics’ of glass and tile manipulation, composition, different andamento styles, and setting techniques, each student will create a mosaic on either a two-dimensional surface or a sculptural piece (guitar, ceramic element, flower pot, etc.). The final product will be grouted, cleaned, and ready for use or display, and then the student should feel confident enough to tackle a project of a larger scope. No prior experience necessary. Students must supply their own glass and purchase their own tools. Machines and some tools will be available for student use. Supply list will be provided at the first class. Calligraphy: Mondays 11 am – 1 pm Coronado Recreation Department Learn the art of beautifully creating letters and symbols using calligraphy. Wendy Telford will teach the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner starting with an overview of tools; pens, ink, and paper. Showcasing the student’s work, a book will be created as the culmination of each course. Most materials and tools are provided; please bring a 9x12 tablet of smooth paper and a few sheets of tracing paper.

Ceramics: Tuesdays/Thursdays 6:00-9:00 pm Coronado Adult Education This class explores a variety of techniques for object making in clay. Instruction and demonstrations will focus on both hand-building techniques (pinch pot, coil method, slab building, and modeling), and the potter’s wheel. The class and the demonstrations will focus on the interests of individual students that could be sculptural or functional. Coloring Social Group: Thursdays 2:30-4:00 pm FREE John D. Spreckels Center Coloring is no longer just for kids; in fact, adult coloring books are all the rage. Just like meditation, coloring allows us to switch off our brains from other thoughts and has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus, and bring about more mindfulness. Limited space available on a first come first serve basis. Materials provided. Craft Class: 1st Wednesday of the month 9:30 am-12:00 pm Coronado Senior Association Join us to make a fun craft project for a modest fee for materials. Digital Photography: Wednesdays 5-7 pm Coronado Adult Education This course provides entry-level training in digital camera operation and digital imaging correction and manipulation. Employment opportunities include digital photographers, photography assistants, touch-up artist, and other positions in the photography industry. Instruction covers camera operation, exposure control, image composition, printing methods, and imaging correction and manipulation with iPhoto, Photoshop Creative Cloud, and Adobe Lightroom. Students use equipment that includes Macintosh computers, digital cameras scanners, CD-ROMs, and color printers.

Jewelry Design and Fabrication: Tuesdays 5:00-9:00 pm Coronado Adult Education This course is designed to nurture the creative vision and to teach the skills needed to bring it to life. It’s an in–depth look at the basics of handmade jewelry. Students learn essential basic techniques including the use of leather, wire, patinas, and other combination methods for making jewelry. This course offers an opportunity to explore diverse projects with step-by-step instructions while gaining familiarity with equipment and materials. Students will take home several finished pieces of jewelry. Ornamental Drawing: Wednesdays 6:30-8:30 pm Coronado Adult Education Artsy adornments! Decorative details! Ornamental oddities! Geometric greatness! In this class, you will learn to create beautiful, complex art pieces that stem from simple geometric shapes and doodled patterns! Looks difficult? Together we will break down the steps, and you can see how simple and fun they are to make! Students will gain a general familiarity with the art style and its process and develop the confidence to try creating their own original works. And that is exactly what you will do! After being given a foundation in the style, students will plan, sketch, and create their very own unique drawings, resulting in beautiful finalized personal artworks. The class will close out with a final group viewing party, during which we will display and admire each other’s lovely new pieces! Watercolor: Fridays 2:30-4:30 pm John D. Creative Writing Workshops: Thursdays 12:30-3:00 pm Jump start your creativity in the New Year with writing workshops that support you in finding your own stories and writing them in your unique voice. A new season of Amherst Writers and Artists Workshops begins Thursday, January 3, from 12:30-3 p.m. in the community room of the Coronado Historical Association, AWA creates a safe, supportive space for writers at any level of experience. We write to prompts, give only positive feedback and maintain confidentiality of all written work. Tea and snacks provided at break. Please join our discussion on the work of poets from states such as Alaska, Colorado, California, Montana and more. Adult Tap: ages 16+ Coronado Academy of Dance Perfect for the “older” beginning student. Learn tap fundamentals and basic rhythms, combinations, across-the-floor traveling patterns, etc. It’s never to late to learn how to tap–have fun, make new dance friends, and learn how fun tap can be! Beginner Ballet: Thursdays 5:30-6:30 pm Coronado Adult Education This is a beginner ballet class designed for adults of all ages, 18 to 80 years old. Ballet is the best exercise for strengthening your muscles and mind. No prior experience needed. Ballet slippers are required. Arte in Español (TK-3rd grade): spanish classes for kids. Welcome to the wonderful world of Little Amigos, where learning Spanish is child’s play! Children work with an experienced Spanish teacher in small instructional groups. Classes held once a week after school and class summaries are sent home for added practice. A combination of English and Spanish will be used during class to teach students about unique cultures through amazing art projects they get to take home: Papel Picado, amate paintings, clay animals, maracas, and creative calaveritas. Cartoon Character Sketch (7+): Wednesdays 3:00-4:30 Coronado Recreation Department Learn to sketch from the former art director of design for custom comics at DC Comics. The sketching cartoon characters class will work on drawing fundamentals, learning how to draw using geometric shapes, working with volume and building a sketchbook of characters. Once drawn, participants will use colored pencils to color in their characters and learn about shading and much more. Class fee includes all supplies. Tinker Tuesday (Preschool-5th): Tuesdays 3-4 pm in the Ruby Room Coronado Public Library - Free and open to the public Free your inner scientist, engineer and artist at the Library! Babies, Tots, & Kinders Keeping Tempo: Mondays 10-10:45 am or 11-11:45 am Coronado Recreation Department Calling all Boppin Babies and Talented Tots for a fun filled Musical Adventure! Playing with puppets and percussion instruments, singing silly songs, and circle dancing, will all keep your Crazy Kiddo Tapping to the Beat. Research indicates that parent bonding in early childhood music classes enhance a child’s cognitive abilities, and significantly enriches their social and physical well being. KINDERDANCE with Me® (15-24 months): Tuesdays 9:00-9:30 am Coronado Recreation Department Little movers and their favorite adult are involved in this cute upbeat class filled with interactive songs and props that are just right for them! The class curriculum offers age appropriate exposure to developmental milestones through dance and sensory-motor activities while nurturing the bond between caregiver and child. Kinderdance certified instructors guide and dance along with caregivers as they participate and learn to facilitate the natural exploration and progression of motor development through play, laying the groundwork for academic success as the children grow. Children will have a smooth transition from Kinder “Dance With Me ® ” into the two year old program, Kindertots, when they are ready! Parent (or other adult) participation is required for this class. Dance FUNdamentals: Age 2 Coronado Academy of Dance Creative movement is a way for all children, boys and girls, to explore their sense of self and the environment. Tots will have opportunities to move, play, and connect with each other through multi-sensory, developmentally-targeted movement activities. Dance FUN promotes social, emotional, and physical awareness skills in an energized and fun environment. Use of movement games, music, rhythm, shakers, scarves, and other props will enhance the natural curiosity and creativity of your child. This 30-minute class is a great introduction for the tiny dancer before beginning pre-ballet and tap.

Boogie Babies: Ages 3-4 Coronado Academy of Dance In this 45-minute combination class of pre-ballet and tap, children will learn to take turns, share, line up, listen to their teacher, and follow directions in addition to learning basic ballet and tap techniques. Creative and imaginative expression will be emphasized at this level. Basic skills are repeated each week to develop a strong foundation for young dancers. MOVE 2 THE BEAT (3-5 years): Mondays 3:30-4:15 pm Coronado Recreation Department We will explore expressive movements as we learn basic dance moves. Dancers will do floor combinations and learn balancing poses. Your child will build stamina, strength, and coordination as they express themselves through music and dance. They will improve their listening skills, spatial awareness, and sequential learning in this fun class. Mini Gymnastics (3-5 years old): Tuesdays 2:45-3:25 pm Coronado Recreation Department Come and explore the world of spatial awareness for your youngsters by enrolling them in gymnastics! Our fun filled, active program encourages young students to explore all forms of large motor movement skills needed to develop their bodies for future physical endeavors. We incorporate all the gymnastics events to enhance complete body, spatial, stretching and positions. Learning through “fun and safe” play and working independently without parental guidance. KINDERGYM® Kindergym® (3-5): Thursdays 10:20-11:05 am Coronado Recreation Department Kindergym is designed to provide boys and girls, ages 3-5, with fun activities including floor gymnastics, tumbling, acrobatics, gross motor development, and movement education. Music appreciation and academic readiness skills are incorporated into each activity as our Kindergym® instructors work to build each child’s self-esteem and independence. Mats, low safe beams, and obstacle courses are utilized throughout the curriculum. The proper timing and use of this program will enhance the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of the participant while building their sense of self and others.

KINDERDANCE®(3-5): Tuesdays 2:30-3:30 or Thursdays 9:15-10:15 Coronado Recreation Department Kinderdance® for young children, ages 3-5, is a developmental dance, motor skill, music, and fitness program. Boys and Girls can be enrolled for up to 3 years with this 3 level program. Parents who want to give their child the opportunity to dance will love how Kinderdance® teaches the basics of Ballet, Tap, Acrobatics and Creative Movement while blending educational concepts. Children dance to original and familiar child friendly music while learning from Kinderdance® certified teachers / instructors. This program provides children with the potential to be creative, express themselves through movement, learn the foundations of ballet and tap, while building strong muscles, turn taking and social skills, self-confidence and self-esteem, all while age appropriate educational concepts that are already being taught in preschool and practiced at home are reinforced. Please bring ballet shoes and tap shoes. Twinkle Toes: Ages 4-5 Coronado Academy of Dance Continuing on the pre-ballet and tap concepts learned in Boogie Babies, this 1-hour class is the next step to advance your child’s listening skills, sharing, following directions, and motor development. New steps are introduced to prepare the young dancer for formal dance training. Mini Hop: Ages 4-5 Coronado Academy of Dance This popular class is designed to teach very young children the basics of isolation and coordination for Hip Hop movements in a fun, non-competitive environment. Kinder Combo: Ages 5-6 Coronado Academy of Dance Building on the pre-ballet and tap concepts explored in Boogie Babies and Twinkle Toes, this 1-hour class continues to develop appreciation for technique, classroom engagement, group collaboration, and the fun that dance can bring. Kinder Combo is the final stepping stone before advancing to our Ballet Stars, Tap Stars and Jazz Stars classes.

KINDERCOMBO® (5-8 years): Thursdays 2:45-3:30 pm Kindercombo® is a program designed for beginning dance students in Kindergarten – Third Grade to learn Ballet, Tap, and Modern dance techniques. Participants will be taught foundational skills and terms which will then grow over the course of the dance year to include more advanced movements and ideas. Along the way, our Kindercombo® certified instructors will include opportunities for creative thinking and movement exploration as we nurture each child’s independence and imagination. Kindercombo® aims to instill an appreciation for the arts and a love for dance for children to carry with them for a lifetime. Please bring ballet shoes and tap shoes. MINI H2A DANCE TEAM (5-8 years): Tuesdays 3:30-4:55 pm Coronado Recreation Department This rehearsal time is open only to our Mini Heart2Art dance team to work and prepare for their upcoming performances. Our Mini Heart2Art team performs locally in the Coronado & San Diego area. Dancers must be a member of Mini H2A dance team to participate in this class. Gymnastics I, II, III, IV (5-17): Tuesdays at 3:30, 4:10 and 5:00 Coronado Recreation Department Swinging from bars, balancing on beams, tumbling and vaulting over equipment highlight this safe, fun class. All ages and levels are welcome to join in learning the wonderful sport of gymnastics. Proper rolling, safe landing, handstands, cartwheels, bridges and handsprings are introduced in a successful and progressive manner. Class will be divided according to skill level. Gymnastics III & IV is by instructor recommendation only. Students will be learning walkovers, handsprings as well as extensive stretching and conditioning. HIP-HOP (6-13 years): Mondays 4:15-5:00 pm Coronado Recreation Department Pick up some of the hottest hip-hop dance moves in this class, whether your child is a beginner or experienced dancer. Dancers will learn the foundation of hip-hop steps. This class promotes artistic expression and movement in a fun, musical environment. Emphasis will be placed on coordination, rhythm, timing, and confidence.

JAZZ FUNK & FREESTYLE (6-13 years): Tuesdays 5:00-5:45 pm Coronado Recreation Department Jazz Funk & Freestyle take elements from Hip Hop and Jazz dance and blends both unique dance styles. These dance styles give you the chance to release sassiness and dance fiercely! Leave this class feeling as if you just stepped out of a video! Ballet: ages 6+ Coronado Academy of Dance Technique based on body alignment, proper placement, and posture. Barre and center floor work are utilized to teach musicality, rhythm, coordination and flexibility. Ballet provides a foundation for all other forms of dance as well as conditioning for sports and injury prevention. Ballet is encouraged for all dancers, as well as athletes wishing to gain better body control, alignment, and core strength. Ballet teaches discipline, self-control, respect, and self-awareness. Tap: ages 6+ Coronado Academy of Dance Tap is a form of dance where syncopated rhythmic sounds are created by the feet in a series of regulated and controlled movements. The student gains a sense of timing, rhythm and coordination, a new form of expression, and the ability to work with others. Jazz: Ages 6+ Coronado Academy of Dance A stylized technique-based class that emphasizes long lines and musicality. Jazz dance will emphasize rhythm, coordination, strength, flexibility, and isolation of movement. Class focuses on flexibility, strength, turns and leaps, and jazz choreography. Jazz is specifically used to teach personal expression and help dancers find their personal style and voice, as well as body control and awareness. Jazz students are strongly encouraged to study ballet as well.

Hip Hop: Ages 6+ Coronado Academy of Dance This class is high-energy and fun for both boys and girls who want to learn a dance style influenced by some of today’s hottest choreographers. Classes include conditioning and warm-up, simplified break-down of each dance step, skill combinations and choreography. All moves and music are age appropriate and level specific. Students love learning these upbeat dance steps while moving to their favorite songs. Hip Hop is specifically geared toward self-empowerment and positive self-talk, using dance to teach personal power and respect. It also enhances coordination, strength, quickness, and endurance. H2A Junior TEAM (9-11 years): Wednesdays 3:30-4:55 pm Coronado Recreation Department This intermediate/advanced class goal is to unify the H2A Juniors Team and to strengthen participating hip-hop dancers. The technique class and rehearsal time is open only to our Heart2Art Junior dance team to work and prepare for their upcoming performances. Our Heart2Art Juniors team performs locally in the Coronado & San Diego area. Dancers must be a member of H2A Juniors Team to participate in this class. Contemporary: ages 11+ Coronado Academy of Dance A form of theatrical dancing that uses ballet technique, use of fall and recovery, contraction, release, locomotor movements, movements that convey a message or tell a story, use of irregular meter, music, sounds, electronic music and contemporary music, use of multimedia and poetry. The dancer uses bare feet or sandals. Most professional ballet dancers are also trained in lyrical and contemporary. Today choreographers combine ballet with modern technique for many of their works. Placement is upon approval of the Director. H2A Team Technique Class (12-17 years): Thursdays 3:30-4:55 pm Coronado Recreation Department This intermediate/advanced class goal is to unify the H2A Team and strengthen participating hip-hop dancers. The technique class and rehearsal time is open only to our Heart2Art dance team to work and prepare for their upcoming performances.

Coronado Playhouse: summer theatre camps in the works – stay tuned! Island Youth Theatre: Islander Youth Theater is an affiliate of the Coronado Arts Education Foundation. The organization produces two all-ages musicals annually. Students in grades 1-12 experience the rigors and fun of musical theater including auditions, rehearsals, and performances. Announcements about the Spring musical will be out soon! Lamb's Players Educational Outreach brings back its most requested production from its critical issues/critical choices series! BASH, an interactive experience that explores the challenge of conflict resolution within a variety of situations that kids deal with everyday; through a high energy blend of language arts, percussion, and audience participation. LAMB'S Educational Outreach brings back its most requested production from its critical issues/critical choices series! BASH is an interactive experience that addresses the issue of bullying and explores the challenge of conflict resolution within a variety of situations that kids deal with everyday. It is colorful, fast-paced, energetic and FUN! BASH (designed for K-6) is 40 minutes in length and assists teachers in addressing Academic Content Standards, supplementing curriculum in language and performing arts. Coronado High School: arts electives include: Art, Advanced Art, Art Portfolio, AP Studio Art, Ceramics, Advanced Ceramics, Ceramics Portfolio, Digital Media/Arts Foundations, Digital Photography, Advanced Digital Photography, Drama (not offered during 18/19 school year), Dance, Band, Choir (not offered during 18/19 school year), AP Music Theory, Electronic Music, Broadcasting (not offered during 18/19 school year), Yearbook, Creative Writing, and Stagecraft.

Coronado Middle School: arts electives include Art, Advanced Art, Digital Media, Choir, Advanced Band, Beginning Band, Digital Media/Intro to Film, Broadcast Journalism (KCMS), Performing Arts (drama, vocal music, dance), and Advanced Performing Arts.

Monart: Monart is an after school drawing class that is available at Village Elementary! Come join in the fun of artistic expression in a comfortable and non-competitive environment! Your child will be under the guidance of a certified MONART instructor.

Musica Vitale: Each Spring, Musica Vitale visits the Coronado Middle Schools to give not just mini concerts of classical and popular repertoire, but lessons on music history, the science of music, etc. Instead of sound or video clips, students experience actual performances by professional musicians and music educators. They learn that music doesn’t just happen and doesn’t only come out of a device; it is a skill that they too can acquire, whether they grow up to be performers themselves or mature into educated “consumers.” Silver Strand Elementary School: Instrumental Band program for 4th and 5th graders includes flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. VAPA: Visual and Performing Arts & Arts for Learning: Students receive instruction in the Discrete Arts every other week as well as Arts Integrated lessons throughout the school year. Students learn discrete art skills in visual arts, dance, music and theatre. The National Core Arts Standards teach students not only to think creatively, but also to respond to the Arts in various ways. The Arts bring an opportunity for learners to take risks, engage in self-directed learning, and formulate their own opinions. They also teach them to respect others’ ideas, even if they are different than their own. Arts for Learning lessons are designed by collaborative teaching teams that include classroom teachers and guest teaching artists to integrate and complement the Common Core Standards already established in the classroom. Teaching Artists are contracted through Arts for Learning San Diego. The goals of the CUSD Arts for Learning Project are to improve the achievement and engagement of military students in the area of English Language Arts through integrated Arts curriculum development and instruction. The district and its military dependent students have benefited greatly from the three previous DoDEA grants; the implementation of this proposal will add a necessary layer of support. Village Elementary School: Instrumental Band program for 4th and 5th graders includes flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion.
