MOODACTIVE 2019 ANNUAL REPORT 2
From the President
Largest thanks to our volunteer staff, committee, sponsors/funders, supporters and
venue partners.
Collectively we've made 2019 a successful year - one more on the road to
recognition of exercise in boosting mental health.
In 2020 we hope to run more of our 4-week programs, build our casual class
attendance, and convince more people that three proper exercise sessions a week
can change a person's life.
We'll also be on the front foot with our advocacy and media engagement - an area
which needs a few loud voices backed by conviction and results.
My best wishes to our entire team for a cheerful and challenging year...I trust there
will be some funky adventures for all of us along the way.
Onward,
Cameron Wilson (President & Founder)

MOODACTIVE 2019 ANNUAL REPORT 2
Year in review – GM Tania Curley
FY19 has been a year of exploration and growth for Mood Active. Exercise continues
to remain in the spotlight with media as a key intervention to assist in mental health
recovery and the demand for low intensity mental health services continues to
increase. Thanks to some funding support from Central and Eastern PHN and City of
Sydney and the support of key venue partners we have been able to expand our 8
week program from 2 to 4 Sydney locations and also launch our new 4 week
wellbeing workout having now delivered 5 of these with really positive results. For
those who complete our programs, over 80% report an improvement in one or more
of their mental health scores post program and we have now introduced a 3 month
post program survey to help track longer term outcomes so we look forward to
seeing the results for this.
This year we delivered over 600 sessions to individuals that may not have otherwise
engaged in exercise and education with over 2500 attendances at our programs.
We would not have been able to deliver this without the significant efforts of our
team, which has now grown to over 40 and has included primarily volunteers, some
paid trainers and a small operations team of 3 who are now paid.
Our team continues to rely heavily on volunteers due to ongoing lack of significant
and long term funding and our focus in FY20 will be to explore opportunities to better
self sustain and work with charitable partners while also maintaining operations at
our 4 sites and offer our 4 week programs to a more. Given our growth there is also a
need to improve our systems efficiency and make life easier for our staff so that we
can continue to maintain our 4 and 8 week programs at our 4 sites, offer our 4 week
program to corporations and then longer term expand our offerings sustainably.

Early results from our 4 week wellbeing workout program are also positive. Of the 32 individuals who fully completed pre and post program surveys from the 4 week wellbeing workout the early
results are positive. At this stage only 10 individuals have completed 12 week post so it is still too early to review effects at 12 weeks. We are still waiting for 12 week post program data.
Community services, psychological services and the Mood active website continue to remain the primary source of referrals. While GP referrals have improved to 8% this continues to be a targeted area of improvement.
83% of enquiries were from females and while age groups were broad, those who were 26-35 and 46-65 years continue to be those most likely to enquire making up approx. 52% of enquiries

Client story - Gill R
I first started experiencing anxiety when I was in my teens, while writing my HSC exams. In addition to getting panic attacks, I also suffered from quite severe physiological symptoms like nausea and gastro upsets.
It was during my gap year in the UK that I decided to seek professional help. Even though my anxiety improved with some CBT, I was suffering from depression as well. Since I’ve moved back to Australia, I’ve been seeing a psychologist and a regular basis and using anti-depression medication. This, together with the work I’ve done with my psychology nurse practitioner using DBT has had a positive impact, but I knew that I had to keep working hard to stay level and healthy.
I saw an ad for Mood Active on Instagram, signed up for the 8-week program and ended up staying for the social program, once I’d completed it. I’ve tried exercise as part of my treatment program before, and it has been the one activity that I’ve found hardest to stick with. But the cardio tennis was really fun and I’m also now doing yoga every week.
I had no idea what to expect when I started, but having a client liaison officer and a really supportive team of trainers made all the difference. They gave me all the information and support that my anxious brain needed to feel more confident about trying the program.
I’ve enjoyed meeting so many different people with really similar stories to mine. I could turn up on a low day and speak to everyone else how I was feeling, because I knew that they understood. That’s something I don’t feel I can talk about in my everyday life, so it’s a really good outlet.
I am so proud of myself, I managed to keep on schedule, improved my fitness ‘beep’ test and feel calmer and stronger, particularly after a session of yoga. Mood Active has been a great addition to my treatment plan – it has been easy and accessible and has really built my confidence, in my body and in my strength.
I would recommend that anyone thinking of signing up should just do it! It’s never as scary or hard as you think it will be and the Mood Active team are very welcoming and supportive.

Testimonials
“I found the entire program enjoyable and beneficial I’m so glad I showed up and joined in I feel an immense change in my mental attitude towards exercise and most surprisingly the fact that I like group activities! I’ve been a loner for so long so this was quite an Awakening for me The facilitators were great, far more than just competent, they were all excellent communicators and held extensive knowledge base re their chosen field. Tania was AWESOME, she presented the course in an interesting, entertaining, relaxed and fun way. I highly recommend the course.”
Peter - 4 and 8 week program “The most beneficial things were definitely the educators (past talk therapy hasn’t worked, a training room environment has worked best and I needed take home skills), sharing the Moodactive program within a supportive group environment as I learnt my challenges are similar to others who are experiencing anxiety, etc., the exercise (who wants to be told to take a tablet and go home!).
It’s rare to find any program invested in
using exercise as the prescribed dose
to support anxiety suffers. “

"It has been a Godsend finding you
guys. Wished I’d found you sooner. It is so nice to see there is help out there but it wasn’t easy to find“,
Janette - 4 week, 2019
"My life before mood active was very emotionally and physically challenging and this will always be ,but finding out about mood active and the supportive team has been amazing helping me make healthy and challenging decisions and they have been very supportive in all of it .
I wish I found out about it early in my
journey. Thank you to you all“
Pauline, June 2019, 4wk & 8 week
“I enjoyed the content it was evidence based. Even the little things like visualisation or writing things down were good to bring up. The CBT strategies were good to know too. I thought the staff were fantastic and they created a great group environment.”
Hannah, Feb 19
“I’m truly grateful for finally getting into
the MoodActive program. Having the
support and understanding offered to
myself it was a very positive
experience. The staff of Mood Active
were always helpful and caring
towards the achievement for my
exercise capacity and very
considerate of my chronic disease. If it
wasn’t for this caring approach I would
certainly have had left the program..”

Our focus for the future
We will continue to focus on organizational sustainability with the launch of the 4 week wellbeing workouts with community partners and corporates. There will also be a move towards larger and longer term research and government grants. Making life easier for our operational staff and volunteers through the improvement of our systems is still key for us while we aim to maintain our operations in 4 locations across Sydney and continue to pursue expansion opportunities throughout Sydney with charitable partners.
We will no longer be pursuing NDIS provider status or medicare status at this time. Our due diligence shows that this will not provide our clients or the organization with any additional key benefits at this time (although NDIS clients can use their funds on our program). This focus may change in the future as we monitor the changes to the frameworks and cost structures around exercise rebates and processes around this.
