Waterford’s Top Cow Family “Wildflower”Lot 25 Genetic Package: 4 A Grade Embryos

Palgrove Moderator x Waterford Marshmellow M26 (P)Waterford Charolais presents a unique opportunity to purchase embryos from the heart of our herd. Rarely do you find a female with so much power and performance in such a structurally sound and refined package. We are excited for this joining, not only for the strength of genetic lines on both sides, but also the physical potential for a show champion that will breed on. This is combined with the advantage of having solid predicted EBV figures with majority above average on all traits, low birth, high weights, positive fat cover and top15% for EMA - makes this an opportunity is not to be missed. Waterford Marshmallow is a soft, long bodied, deep ribbed female that offers a tremendous muscle pattern. Impressive pedigree on both sides Sired by Fernvale Trapper (last semen straws sold for $700) and out of Waterford’s most productive female line (wildflower). The Wildflower cow line are not only champion show cattle they are true breeders and are Waterfords elite Donor Dams. Son’s have sold commercially in Victoria for $10,000, 2 sons sold to Palgrove Charolais. Waterford Wildflower’s 2nd and 3rd calves were exhibited at Melbourne shows in 2 consecutive years both placing 3rd in interbreed junior bull! Waterford Wildflower M27 placed second to Waterford Marshmallow her whole show career, Waterford Moonbeam won heifer shows and placed first in her royal show classes! This is just some of the show results of the cow family! Waterford Marshmallow had a successful show career, Junior Champion at the Nationals in 2017, Junior Champion at Melbourne Show later in the year and Victorian Country shows she was referred to as “winks” and won most Heifer shows and Supreme exhibits of the Show. The progeny of this cow line are always classy and turn heads wherever they go! Waterford Bought a Semen share in Palgrove Moderator ($23,000). He is an exciting bull with curve bending EBV’s and some of the most powerful set of EBVs across the board in 2018.‘A real 3 dimensional bull - length, width and depth, coupled with an ideal maturity pattern. Perfect foot and leg structure and awesome temperament.

Comments: Next Edition is an easy doing son of the high performing bull Glenlea Honourable. He is a moderate framed bull who judges at various shows commented he was very well structured and moved freely around the ring. We think highly of him and have joined him to a select group of females within our own herd. In 2018 he won a very competitive yearling class at Ekka then follwed this up winning Interbreed Junior Champion Bull at Tamworth Show. Comments: Package 2 A Grade Embryos: A package that will produce performance, profitability and plenty of style and volume. Elegance 8 was a successful show heifer when she was young, and has the tidiest feet, legs and udder you will find. She is ranked in the top 15% of the breed for 400-day growth, and all $indexes. Blackjack was a terrific find for us when we saw him in Canada in June 2016. His first lot of calves were simply outstanding the most consistent lot of calves I have ever seen. We bought the Australian rights to him and semen here has now sold out. Blackjack is now ranked in the top 10% for nine traits, including all growth and carcase traits in the top 5%. We really think this package is really special with the resulting progeny having a pedigree that is 75% similar to Elders Honcho 72E (semen rights bought by Palgrove & Silverstream), Grand Champion Bull at the 2018 Canadian Agribition. Very likely that these embryos will result in homozygous progeny. We guarantee 50% conception if transferred by an approved ET technician. Claim must be made within 18 months from sale date. Stored at United Cattle Breeding Service, Allora Qld.

SEDALIASedalia in my time was considered to be one of the most successful studs in Australia considering the numbers of breeders I had. Most of my success came by flushing donor cows and using their embryos. My last showing was with Chancellor in 2009 Rocky Beef Australia QLD winning Grand Champion Bull and sold for $26,000. His semen is still for sale. His full brother BEAUMONT sold to John Mercer QLD at the Nationals and his sons regularly topped his sales in excess of $10,000. Moongool stud purchased VICTORY for $15,000 who bred many top bulls, one in particular was YELLOW PAGES who won a Championship at Brisbane QLD. Also sold many stud bulls in VIC and SA for over $10,000 and embryos for the Palgrove stud QLD.

Comments: EMBRYO PACKAGE (4): A rare opportunity to purchase embryos from the heart of our herd. Rarely do you find a female with so much power and performance in such a structurally sound and refined package. We are excited for this joining, not only for the strength of genetic lines on both sides, but also the physical potential for a champion that will breed on. This is combined with the advantage of having solid predicted EBV figures with majority above average on all traits, low birth, high weights, positive fat cover and top15% for EMA - makes this an opportunity is not to be missed.

Comments: Package of FOUR Embryos. Hope K1 is currently one of our stand-out donor females, who was a also a Royal Show Champion when she claimed Junior Champion Female at Ekka in 2015 and gained a lot of admirers around the show circuit as a mature cow. The photo in the catalogue doesnt do this magnificent cow justice; she developed into a moderate framed, deep sided, soft, red factor female with a beautiful udder. Pedigree wise; she stems from the reknowned Gobongo Rebby family. The sire; HRJ Crowd Favourite is one of our exciting new-release Canadian AI sires that we own exclusive rights with Palgrove Charolais. We selected this bull in Canada for his impressive phenotype which he also consistently passed on to his progeny. Comments: Package of 6 A GRADE embryos. Nelson full French was one of the most exciting full French bulls I used to do embryos with. His bulls sold over $10,000 and then their bloodlines topping sales for their owners and most of the females finished up as donor cows. These embryos, I believe, are the most valuable by using Nelson over Sedalia Xali poll (AI) (ET) because I had such success by using Nelson. Xali sire, CCR Sureshot poll, was used a lot because he was a great strong polled breeder. Xali dam, Sedalia Paulette, her sire was Newthrums Solar full French and Paulettes dam was Sedalia Josephine, who was sired by Fleets Rascal full French. Xali all her progeny was polled by using Nelson and all their polled calves, what a money making outfit it will be. Digna 91 by Palgrove Viagra (P), has produced a couple of stud sires and many other top draw progeny. Her EBV credentials include top 5% for EMA, top 10% for fertility and top 15% for milk and rib & rump fat. The Seminole factor in this mating we believe will be the icing on the cake. Thanks to the Holzwart family we were able to secure a small package of semen from this outstanding sire. What makes an outstanding sire? CHAROLAIS BREEDPLAN EBV ExplanationsEBVs An animal’s breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).AccuracyAccuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the “confidence level” of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.

TRAITSCalving Ease EBVs (%) are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.CE % Dir = Direct Calving Ease - The EBV for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age.CE % Daughters = Daughters’ Calving Ease - The EBV for daughters’ calving ease indicates how easily that sire’s daughters will calve at two years of age.

Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on Artificial Insemination & hand mating records. Lower (negative) Gestation Length EBVs indicate shorter gestation length & therefore easier calving & increased growth after birth.

Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for yearling weight.600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV.

Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter’s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability.Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny.

Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher Eye Muscle Area EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower Eye Muscle Area EBVs.Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13 rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs.Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases.Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

Selection IndicesCharolais selection indices are calculated for three market specifications, namely, Domestic, Export and Northern Terminal. Index values are reported as EBVs, in units of relative earning capacity ($’s) for a given market. They reflect both the short-term profit generated by a sire through the sale of his progeny, and the longer-term profit generated by his daughters in a self-replacing cow herd. A selection index combines the EBVs with economic information (costs and returns) for specific market and production systems to rank animals based on relative profit values. Note that different types of animals can give similar profit values, so consideration should be given to both the index and the component EBVs when selecting animals for a particular production system. More information is available on selecting animals using a selection index. The Index values are derived using BreedObject technology. More information is available from the BreedObject web site.

Domestic Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting grass-finished production for the domestic trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg (240 kg HSCW and 6 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Export Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting the production of steers for export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg (380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Northern Terminal Index ($) – Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd in Northern Australia (ie Brahman cows) targeting the production of grass finished steers for the Jap Ox market. Steers are sold direct to slaughter at 630 kg (345 kg HSCW and 5 mm P8 fat depth) at 28 months. All progeny are slaughtered. In response to industry feedback positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.
