WRITING 4-H FASHION REVUE COMMENTARY

The 4-H Fashion Revue commentary presents the 4-H’er and his or her project to the audience. Thecommentary should introduce the 4-H’er, describe special garment features for the audience to notice, andmay highlight additional personal information about the 4-H’er and the project. A commentary'sintroduction lets the 4-H’er know when to come on stage and the conclusion gives the 4-H’er the signal to leavethe stage. 4-H Fashion Revue commentaries should be no longer than 90 seconds (about 200 words). Thisgives the model times to come on the stage, make two or three turns, and then exit. Read aloud and timethe commentary to be sure it takes 60–90 seconds. (Time may vary at a county activity.)

When writing your 4-H Fashion Revue commen-tary, consider the following ideas:

A lead statement introduces the model byname and town/county or club name.

Review the pattern envelope for a descriptionof the garment. These descriptions can giveyou many ideas. Tell about details that theaudience might miss. Stating the obvious boresthe listener.

Discuss what the 4-H’er learned in completingthe project.

Tell how this garment fits into the model's totalwardrobe.

Discuss any original techniques used in theconstruction of the garment.

Tell something about the 4-H’er—backgroundand special interests.

Use statements that carry out the Fashion Re-vue theme, if one is used.

Examples of Fashion RevueCommentaries

Won’t Jon Adams, from Homestyle 4-H Club inRichland, be proud on the first day of school, wearing his new colorful shorts and T-shirt out-fit? This is Jon’s first clothing project. Besidessewing, Jon is active in tennis, baseball, andchoir. Jon learned how to keep his eyes on thesewing machine needle so he could sew straight.Jon says that it is fun to wear this outfit, but thatis is even more fun to tell people he made it all byhimself! Great Job, Jon!

This rayon challis dress is just right for dress-updays at school and other special occasions. MariaCruz, from Spokane, chose this forest green fab-ric because she wants to wear the dress year-round. Notice the lace-tucked edges on the bod-ice. One of Maria’s first learning experiencesfrom this project was matching fabric, lace, andthread. She said it was difficult. The time she spentlooking for just the right colors and textures surepaid off! Maria, you have a beautiful outfit—wearit with pride!
