About the Northern Colorado Medical Society

Established in 1903, the Northern Colorado Medical Society (NCMS) provides a forum for the discussion of social, scientific and legislative concerns affecting the health of local physicians and patients. We advocate on behalf of physician members and work to promote better health in northern Colorado. The Larimer County Medical Society and the Weld County Medical Society merged in 2014 to form the Northern Colorado Medical Society to better serve our region.

The mission of NCMS is to advocate on behalf of our physician members, to encourage a strong and healthy medical profession, and to improve the health and wellbeing of all people in our community.

Serving our CommunityOur directory, also available online, helps patients in our community find local physicians. Our website features local medical news stories, reports on events and links to other health organizations. Visit www.nocomedsoc.org.

The Northern Colorado Medical Society selected Ted Norman, MD, as the 2018 NCMS Physician of the Year. Dr. Norman is a longtime leader in northern Colorado, most recently having served as Northern Colorado Regional Hospitalist Medical Director for Banner Health and vice-chair for Banner’s Department

of Hospital Medicine, and for many years before that as in the hospital setting, internal medicine practice, urgent care setting and emergency room. He served on the CMS Board of Directors from 2011 to 2017 and has served on the LCMS/NCMS Board of Directors since 1999. He was president of the Larimer County Medical Society in 2006.

NCMS: Why did you choose to become a physician?TN: I became a physician mainly because nothing else was engaging me. Had I not gotten into medical school (and I applied after the deadline and still am not sure how I got in), I was planning to take a year and train in full-contact martial arts for excitement.

NCMS: Please briefly describe your career path.TN: I started in a private multispecialty group as a traditional internist and was one of only three doctors in Loveland managing ICU patients. I then transitioned to a hospitalist position over the next 10 years, and continued in that role for another 10.

NCMS: Why is it important to you to be involved in the Northern Colorado Medical Society and Colorado Medical Society?TN: I believe that involvement in the political process is critically important in a time when the non-clinical business side of medicine continues to expand with less and less thought paid to the humanistic side.

NCMS: What other “extracurriculars” do you pursue that compliment your professional career?TN: I am currently volunteering at a clinic for the underinsured, St. Matthew’s Clinic, which was started by a local emergency department physician.

NCMS: What advice do you have for your colleagues and future physicians?TN: With all of the time demands placed on practicing physicians, make sure that anything you spend your time on is value-added to your patients’ or family’s lives.
