Nesting Time 2 But first, mother turtles have work to do. In late spring the mother turtle comes out of her ocean home. She walks up and down the beach at dusk. She is looking for a good spot for her nest. The sand can’t be too dry or too wet. 3 Then the mother turtle digs a hole in the sand for her nest. Baby Sea Turtles Go Home

1 I live near the sea in North Carolina. The beach here is a special place. It is where mother sea turtles make their

nests. It is where baby sea turtles hatch! Did you know a baby turtle is known as a hatchling?

Nesting Time

2 But first, mother turtles have work to do. In late spring the mother turtle comes out of her ocean home. She walks

up and down the beach at dusk. She is looking for a good spot for her nest. The sand can’t be too dry or too wet.

3 Then the mother turtle digs a hole in the sand for her nest. Next, she carefully lays about 100 small eggs in the

nest. Last, she covers the nest with sand.

4 Two weeks later, the mother turtle will look for a spot to make another nest. Again, she will dig a hole. Again, she

will lay her eggs and cover the nest with sand. Every two weeks she will repeat these steps. From May to August, the

mother turtle may lay over 800 eggs!

Protecting the Nests

5 Finally, the mother turtle will return to the sea. She leaves her nest and the eggs within it to develop on their own.

The amount of time the egg takes to hatch varies among the different species and is influenced by environmental

conditions such as the temperature of the sand. Hatchling’s gender is determined by the temperature of the sand.

She will not stay with her eggs. How will the eggs stay safe?

6 My friends and I come to help. We follow the mothers’ tracks in the sand to find the nests. Then we put up signs so

people will know to be careful. Sometimes we even put cages around the nesting spot to keep wildlife out.

Baby Turtles!

7 Two months later, the turtle eggs are ready to hatch. We come at predusk to watch. It is getting dark, but we don’t

use flashlights. Baby turtles need it dark to find their new ocean home. Turtle hatchlings follow the brightest thing

they can see. Any other light sources such as beachfront lighting, streetlights, light from cars, campfires etc. can lead

hatchlings in the wrong direction, also known as disorientation. Without other light, the ocean is the brightest light at

night.

8 One baby turtle pops its head out of the sand. Soon, there are hundreds of baby turtles digging their way out of the

sand. Once out of the nest, hatchlings face many predators including ghost crabs, birds, raccoons, dogs, and fish..

It's estimated that only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. But at last, the little turtles splash into the sea.

They are home!

In the Sea 9 These ancient creatures have been on Earth for more than 100 million years — even surviving the dinosaurs when they became extinct 65 million years ago. Among the threats these turtles face entanglement, habitat loss, and consumption of their eggs. Sea turtles often drown when caught in fishing gear. Coastal development can destroy important nesting. Pollution like plastic bags are often mistaken for food such as jellyfish and ingested, which blocks their intestines and could kill them. In some countries, they are hunted for their meat and shells and their eggs are eaten.
