HOCKEY OPERATIONS BIOSVice President of Operations Danny Briere

Briere was named Mariners Vice President of Op-erations in June of 2017, two years after finish-ing his playing career. The former center played 973 NHL games over 17 seasons with the Phoe-nix Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, and Colorado Avalanche. He finished just shy of 700 career points and was a two-time All-Star. Briere was known as a clutch playoff performer throughout his career as well.

As a 2010 Stanley Cup Finalist with the Flyers, he led the league in postseason scoring, putting up 30 points in 23 games. He averaged just under a point-per-game in his NHL playoff career (124 games). The Gatineau, Quebec native now resides in Philadelphia with his wife, Misha. Briere also has three sons, all of whom currently play hockey.

Armstrong, 34, was named the first head coach in fran-chise history in February 2018, and was promoted this past offseason to add Assistant General Manager to his title. Riley joined the Mariners from the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons (2016-18). Armstrong is a native of Saskatoon, Saskatch-ewan, playing his junior hockey for the Kootenay Ice and Everett Silvertips of the WHL. The forward began his pro career in the AHL with the Cleveland Barons in 2004. Armstrong spent the next five seasons in the San Jose Sharks organization, playing primarily with the AHL’s

Worcester Sharks, but also seeing action in two NHL games in 2008-09. That season, he enjoyed AHL career highs in points (42) and goals (25). After stops in AHL Abbotsford and Grand Rapids, Armstrong got his first look at the ECHL with the Utah Grizzlies in 2010-11. Armstrong’s playing career then took him to Germany, Finland, Sweden, and even Kazakhstan. The most productive season of his career came in 2013-14 as a member of the Landshut Cannibals of Germany’s DEL-2. That season, Armstrong put up 64 points in 45 games (24 goals, 40 as-sists). Scattered between his years overseas, he made stops with the Elmira Jack-als (ECHL), Binghamton Senators (AHL), Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL), and a return to the Utah Grizzlies. Armstrong spent his final professional season as a player in the ECHL with the Reading Royals in 2015-16. All in all, he played 2 career games in the NHL, 404 in the AHL, and 75 in the ECHL. Riley’s brother, Colby played 476 games in the NHL with Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Toronto, and Montreal. Riley current-ly resides in Gorham, ME with his wife, Amber, 7-year-old daughter, Peyton, and 3-year-old son, Ezra.

Assistant Coach Anthony BohnBohn, 34, was hired as assistant coach in June of 2018 after five seasons as a coach in the NAHL (North American Hockey League) and its affiliate league, the NA3HL. Most recently, Bohn served as the assistant coach for the Aberdeen Wings (NAHL) from 2015-17. He was also an assistant for the Topeka Roadrunners (NAHL) from 2013-15. Bohn was head coach/general manager for the Topeka Capitals (NA3HL) for two seasons, and

later a third after they moved to Atlanta. A native of Spring Hill, Flori-da, Bohn played juniors with the NAHL’s Sante Fe Roadrunners, before attending St. Mary’s (Minnesota) for his college hockey. A forward, Bohn led the team in scoring three of his four years and averaged ex-actly a point-per-game in his college career. He graduated in 2010 and then began his coaching career in the Western States Hockey League (WSHL) with the El Paso Rhinos for three years before the NAHL came calling. Bohn and his wife, Falin have twin 2-year-old boys, Aki and Tuukka.

Equipment Manager Jake Rogers Athletic Trainer Cole Libby

Rogers was named head equipment man-ager this past summer after Mark Riepe’s promotion to the AHL. Rogers has been involved in Portland

professional sports for over a de-cade. As a kid, he was both a bat boy for the Portland Sea Dogs and stick boy for the Portland Pirates. He made his way up the ranks with the Pirates, becom-ing a locker room attendant and eventually Assistant Equipment Manager by the 2010-11 season. He quickly became the Assis-tant Equipment Manager for the Mariners under Riepe in 2018-19, as hockey returned to Portland. Jake resides in Raymond, Maine with his wife Kayla.

Libby, ATC, enters his second season as Mar-iners Athetic Trainer Cole, like Rogers was a stick boy for the Port-land Pirates. Cole at-tended Weber State University in Ogden, Utah where he received a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training while also play-ing on the school’s Division 1 club hockey team. His connection to for-mer Portland Pirate Kevin Kaminski helped land his first job as an ath-letic trainer after college with the Louisiana IceGators of the SPHL. After two years with the IceGators, Cole jumped up to the ECHL with the Wichita Thunder and then the Utah Grizzlies, an organization that he originally interned with during his time in college. Cole and his wife, Katie recently welcomed son, Ian to the world.


AFFILIATE INFORMATIONNHL Affiliate: New York RangersOne of the “original six” teams, the Rangers are among the NHL’s most historic franchises. Playing their home games at the world renowned Madison Square Garden in New York City, their lineage runs back to 1926. The Rangers were the first U.S. team to win the Stanley Cup (1928), and have captured a total of four, most recently in 1993-94. Twenty years after their last Cup victory, they returned to the finals (2013-14), but lost in five games to the Los Angeles Kings. The Rangers compete in the Metropolitan Division. Fresh off the second overall pick (Kappo Kakko) in the 2019 NHL Draft, the Rangers look to return to the play-offs for the first time since 2016-17.

AHL Affiliate: Hartford Wolf PackThe top Rangers affiliate since 1997, the Wolf Pack reside in Hartford, Connecticut and the AHL’s Atlantic Division. The organization’s roots - back to its start in Providence, Rhode Island in 1926 - make it the oldest continuously operating professional minor league fran-chise in North American sports. Originally the Provi-dence Reds, and eventually the Dusters, the franchise moved to Binghamton, New York in 1977 after more than 50 years in Rhode Island. Originally the AHL affiliate of the Hartford Whalers, the switch to the Rangers came in 1990. The year 1997 saw the Whal-ers move to North Carolina and the resulting birth of the Wolf Pack in Hartford. From 2010 to 2013, they re-branded to the “Connecticut Whale” before returning to the “Wolf Pack” prior to the 2013-14 sea-son. The Wolf Pack’s lone Calder Cup Title came in 2000.

HISTORY & TIMELINEIt was officially announced that professional hockey was mak-ing a triumphant return to town in June of 2017 when Com-cast Spectacor purchased the ECHL membership of the Alas-ka Aces and relocated it to Portland, Maine. With Philadelphia Flyers brass Paul Holmgren and Danny Briere at the helm, the Mariners were “re-born” in September 2017 when they got their name, winning in a fan vote and paying homage to Port-land’s first pro hockey franchise. A full timeline of the events leading up to and through the inaugural season of ECHL Mari-ners hockey is below:

June 15th, 2017: Comcast Spectacor announces its purchase of the ECHL membership formerly known as the Alaska Aces and its in-tention to move the franchise to Portland and the Cross Insurance Arena.

September 29th, 2017: The Mariners get their name after beating out the Lumberjacks, Watchmen, Puffins, and Wild Blueberries in a fan vote.

November 29th, 2017: The Mariners logo and color scheme is re-vealed.

February 17th, 2018: Riley Armstrong is announced as the first head coach of the Mariners.

April 9th, 2018: The Mariners announce their affiliation with the NHL’s New York Rangers and AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.

June 22nd, 2018: Forward Alex Kile signs with the Mariners, be-coming the first rostered player in franchise history.

August 15th, 2018: Beacon The Puffin is revealed as the Mariners’ mascot.

September 11th, 2018: The Mariners make their first trade in fran-chise history, acquiring forward Terrence Wallin from the Adiron-dack Thunder in exchange for defenseman Matias Cleland.

October 13th, 2018: The Mariners host the Adirondack Thunder in the inaugural ECHL contest in Portland. Jason Salvaggio scores the first goal in franchise history at 10:29 of the first period. A crowd of 5,291 witnessed the game.


October 21st, 2018: The Mariners win their first game in franchise history, defeating the Newfoundland Growlers 3-2 at the Cross Insurance Arena.

November 9, 2018: Shawn St-Amant scores the first overtime goal in team history as the Mariners defeat Worcester 3-2 on the road.

November 14, 2018: St-Amant also gets the first hat trick in Mariners history in a 6-3 home win over Orlando. This is also the franchise’s first game against a non-division opponent.

November 24th, 2018: Ty Ronning registers five points in the third period to lead the Mariners to a memorable 6-4 comeback win over the Manchester Monarchs.

December 28th, 2018: The Mariners defeat Worcester 3-2 in a shootout at home, giving them a perfect 5-0-0 home record in December.

January 18th, 2019: Brandon Halverson makes 43 saves for the first shutout win in franchise history. The Mariners defeat Man-chester, 1-0.

March 1st, 2019: A 4-3 shootout victory in Utah gives the Mari-ners ten consecutive wins in overtime or shootout games. The streak ends the following night with a 4-3 overtime loss.

March 9th, 2019: The Mariners become the Maine Wild Blueber-ries for a game, a nod to the 2nd place name in the naming con-test. The South Carolina Stingrays defeat them in overtime, 2-1.

March 17th, 2019: On St. Patrick’s Day, the Mariners and New-foundland Growlers play an 18-round shootout at the Cross Insurance Arena, the 4th longest shootout in ECHL history. The Mariners win the game 5-4, with Wade Murphy scoring twice, including the game-winner in the 18th round.

April 7th, 2019: The Mariners finish season with a 4-3 home win over Newfoundland, Murphy once again scoring the winner in a shootout. The Mariners finish their inaugural with a 22-12-1-1 home record.

PORTLAND HOCKEY HISTORYThe Original Maine Mariners (1977-1987)

Professional hockey in Portland has a rich history, dating back to the 1970s, when the original Maine Mariners were brought to town by the same franchise that owns

the modern Mariners, the Philadelphia Flyers. The “first” Mariners began play in the 1977-78 season as the AHL affiliate of the Flyers and played their first game in Portland on October 15th, 1977. The Mariners took the league by storm, win-

ning the Calder Cup after a 43-28-9 regular season and defeating the New Haven Nighthawks for the title. They followed up the impressive feat by repeating as Calder Cup Champions the following season, going 45-22-13 and taking down New Haven once again in the finals. The Mariners are still the only franchise in AHL history to win the Calder Cup

in each of ts first two seasons.Prior to the 1983-84 season, the Flyers sold the affiliation to the New Jersey Devils, and

the Mariners pulled off more “first year” magic, winning their third Cup, despite the fran-chise’s first regular season losing record (33-36-11). They defeated the Rochester Amer-icans in the Calder Cup Finals to capture their third championship. It also marked their

fifth finals appearance in seven seasons of existence.

Maine Mariners, Second Franchise (1987-1992)Following the 1986-87 season, the Devils relocated their AHL franchise to Utica, NY,

opening the door for the Boston Bruins to take geographical advantage of the Portland market and place their top affiliate in town – an AHL expansion fran-chise. The Bruins preserved the team name and its logo, making only a color

scheme change from Flyers black-and-orange to Bruins back-and-gold. Remark-ably, it appeared that the Mariners were going to pull off yet another first year run to

the Cup, finishing with the best record in the North Division (44-25-7-4), but they were ousted by the Fredrickton Express in the Division Finals. The 1987-88 season would be

the only successful one for the Bruins iteration of the Mariners, who failed to finish above .500 or make the playoffs in any of their four proceeding seasons. After the 1991-92 cam-paign, the Bruins moved the franchise to Providence, Rhode Island, where it still operates

today. The last Maine Mariners AHL game took place on April 4th, 1992.

Portland Pirates (1993-2016)After just one season without hockey at the Cross Insurance Arena, the Wash-ington Capitals moved their AHL affiliate from Baltimore, Mary-

land to Portland, and the Pirates were born. Enjoying tremendous success on and off the ice right away, the Pirates did what only the Mariners could do before them, and won the Calder Cup in 1993-94: their first season. Barry Trotz, head coach of the 2018

Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals served as the bench boss, leading the Pirates to a 43-27-10 regular season mark and a six-game victory over the Moncton Hawks in the championship series. Trotz would serve as head coach until 1997. The Pirates returned to the Calder Cup Finals in 1995-96, but lost to the Rochester Americans in seven games. Although the Pirates would remain in Portland for ten more seasons, they would never

make a return to the finals.In the summer of 2005, the Pirates switched parent clubs from the Capitals to the Ana-heim Ducks, an affiliation that would last for three seasons. In 2008, a new relationship

began with the Buffalo Sabres that would last through the end of the 2010-11 season, af-ter which the Sabres reunited with Rochester. The move ushered in the Phoenix Coyotes

era, which spanned four seasons. During what would be their final season in Portland (2015-16), the Pirates were affiliated with the Florida Panthers. On May 4th, 2016, it was announced that the Pirates had been sold with intent to relocate the franchise. Less than

two weeks later, the move to Springfield, Massachusetts became official.

Maine Mariners, ECHL (2018-pres) Pro hockey returned to the Cross Insurance Arena in 2018-19, two seasons after the de-pature of the Pirates. This third version of the Mariners is owned by Comcast Spectacor

and operated on the business side by the Philadelphia Flyers, while serving as an affiliate club of the New York Rangers and AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. A full timeline of the events leading up to and through the inaugural season

The Cross Insurance Arena, built in 1977, hosts a variety of con-certs, family shows, conventions

and sporting events. The Cross Insurance Arena was also home to the original Maine Mariners as well as the Portland Pirates. Follow-ing the 2011-12 hockey season, work began on an eventual $33 mil-lion renovation project which included, but was not limited to: ad-ditional seating, locker room upgrades, added bathroom facilities, and an expanded box office. The Cross Insurance Arena is owned by Cumberland County and operated by Spectra which provides venue management and partnerships services. The Cross Insurance Arena capacity totals 6,733.

The ECHL is the “Premier AA Hockey League,” boast-ing 26 teams across the U.S. and into Eastern Canada. Formerly short for “East Coast Hockey League,” the expansion into areas like Boise, Idaho, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Rapid City, South Dakota, made the ECHL de-cide to identify by its abbreviation only. The ECHL and AHL are the only minor leagues affiliated with the NHL. The ECHL was founded in 1988, celebrating its 30th an-niversary in 2017-18. The league is split into four divi-sions (North, South, Central, Mountain) within two con-ferences (Eastern and Western) and its Championship trophy is the Kelly Cup. The Newfoundland Growlers captured the 2019 Cup in their first season of existence. The ECHL follows most of the rules and regulations of its two higher leagues, but plays with three forward lines instead of four – dressing just 18 players (goalten-ders included) in a game (compared to 20 in the AHL and NHL). Roster size is 20, compared to 23 in the NHL. Players on ECHL rosters can have a contract with an NHL, AHL, or ECHL team. In 2019-20, the ECHL swiched from five to seven minute overtime periods and institut-ed video review for goals in all arenas.

Notable NHL Stanley Cup champions who started their careers in the ECHL include: Jordan Binnington, G (Blues) One of the biggest stories of the 2019 Stanley Cup play-offs, rookie Binnington helped the Blues capture their first Cup, by beating the Bruins in seven games.

Tim Thomas, G (Bruins, Panthers, Stars) Thomas led the Bruins to a Stanley Cup Championship in 2010-11 and won the Vezina Trophy twice (‘09 and ‘11).

Michael Ryder, F (Canadiens, Bruins, Stars, Devils) Ryder had five 50 point seasons in the NHL and five with 25 or more goals. He was also on the 2011 Bruins Stanley Cup team.

Jonathan Quick, G (Kings) Quick is a two time Cup champ with the Kings (‘12 and ‘14) and a three time All-Star. He won the Conn Smyth Award (Playoff MVP) in 2012. Braden Holtby, G (Capitals) Holtby led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup in team history in 2018. He won the 2016 Vezina Trophy and is a three time All-Star.

Ruslan Fedetenko, F (Flyers, Lightning, Penguins, Rangers)Fedetenko is best known for his Stanley Cup Finals heroics, scoring both goals for the Lighting in their 2004 Game 7 win over the Calgary Flames. He won a second cup with the Pen-guins in 2009.
