About SusquehannaSusquehanna is a selective, residential university that combines excellent academic programs with career-building professional internships and research opportunities. In fact, 90% of stu-dents complete an internship, research or other professional experience. Students also develop critical thinking, writing and communication skills, which prepare them for the job market or graduate school. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of Susquehanna graduates are employed or pursuing advanced degrees within six months of graduation. Our winning combination of relevant academic programs and professional experience not only gets students to their first job, but also ensures that they are able to adapt for a lifetime of personal and professional success.

We offer more than 100 majors and minors, the faculty-to-stu-dent ratio is 1:13, and our average class size is 19. Faculty members are mentors as well as teachers. The university is recognized nationally for our commitment to off-campus study through the Global Opportunities (GO) program. All students complete a cross-cultural experience for at least two weeks in the U.S. or abroad, which broadens their perspective and pro-vides them options. In a time of geopolitical and economic com-plexity, they are better equipped to connect with people from other backgrounds, be they coworkers or clients.

Our courses are taught by exceptional professors, not graduate students, who are accessible and eager to collaborate. Students benefit from a curriculum that is both innovative and flexible. Susquehanna has a School of Arts and Sciences and the Sigmund Weis School of Business. Our business school is AACSB-accred-ited, placing it among the top five percent of business schools worldwide. Other AACSB schools include Harvard Business School and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.

The quality of the academic experience, interactions with and support from faculty members, plus students’ Global Opportuni-ties (GO) experience, internships and research make them highly desirable job candidates when it’s time to launch their career. For students who enjoy service learning, our Johnson Center for Civic Engagement helps them get involved, plus some of our GO experiences include a service component.

Susquehanna students make friends, learn leadership skills and have fun through more than 150 student-run clubs and organi-zations, fraternities, sororities, service groups and 23 NCAA Di-vision III intercollegiate sports. Student-athletes compete within the Centennial Conference (football) and Landmark Conference, including baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, indoor and outdoor track & field, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swim-ming & diving, tennis and volleyball.

He is the winningest head coach in the 115-season history of the Susquehanna men’s basketball team. When Susquehanna defeated Penn State University-Altoona, 89–77, in the 2003–04 season opener, Marcinek surpassed the mark of 201 wins set by his predecessor—longtime Susquehanna Head Coach and former Director of Athletics Don Harnum as the all-time leader in wins.

During his tenure, Marcinek has guided 18 of his 29 teams to a playoffs berth, including the 2016–17 team that advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. He has guided his teams to winning records in 21 of the 29 years at the helm.

In 2002–03, his efforts were recognized by his colleagues, as he was named Middle Atlantic Commonwealth Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year for the first time

He and his assistants earned the Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year award three times including 2015–16, 2014–15 and 2008–09.

Susquehanna has made four trips to the NCAA Division III playoffs (1991–92, 1993–94, 2015–16 and 2016–17) under Marcinek, won MAC Northwest Division titles in 1989–90 and 1992–93, captured the MAC Northern Division crown in 1991–92, won MAC Commonwealth regular-season titles in 1995–96 and 2002–03 and claimed the inaugural Landmark regular-season championship in 2007–08.

In addition to his coaching duties, Marcinek served as an assistant director of athletics at Susquehanna from 2003 until 2016.

Prior to becoming Susquehanna’s head coach, Marcinek served five years as an assistant coach under Harnum (1982–83 to 1985–86, 1988–89). During that time, Susquehanna made three trips to the Division III playoffs and won two MAC Northern Division titles.

Marcinek was an assistant for two seasons (1986–87, 1987–88) at Ithaca College while he earned his Master of Science degree in physical education.

A 1981 graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, Marcinek and his wife, Cindy, live in Shamokin, Pa. Marcinek’s sons, Scott and Frank Jr., were both members of the Susquehanna men’s basketball team.

More than 100 Years of Susquehanna Basketball

The Susquehanna University men’s basketball program is annually among the upper echelon of its conference, rou-tinely contending for championships and often times winning them. The decade of the 1980s was the most successful decade in team history, but even since 1990, Susquehanna has made four NCAA Division III championship appearances, captured a Middle Atlantic Conference Northern Division title and won a pair of MAC Northwest Division championships to go with a pair of MAC Commonwealth regular-season crowns as well as the inaugural Landmark Conference regular-season championship. The program has posted winning records in 21 out of head coach Frank Marcinek’s 29-season tenure and set a school record with 24 wins in a season in 2015–16. Susquehanna basketball began in 1901 and has seen 27 coaches at the helm, including Amos Alonzo Stagg Jr. Stagg coached basketball from 1935 to 1951, during which time he also coached the football team, including a six-year co-head coaching stint with his legendary father, Amos Sr.

Susquehanna enjoyed several standout seasons during the early 1960s, including a 20-4 campaign in 1962–63 un-der coach John Barr. The late 1960s featured the explosive offense of Rick Eppehimer ’68, who tallied a school-record 2,548 career points from 1964–68. In 1978, guard Mike Scheib ’78 became only the second non-Di-vision I recipient of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, present-ed by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to the nation’s most outstanding senior standing six-feet tall or less. Under the direction of Don Har-num Sr., Susquehanna averaged 16 wins per season during the

1980s and made the playoffs a regular part of its schedule, advancing to postseason play eight times. During that decade, Susquehanna made the NCAA Tour-nament three times, won the MAC Northern title twice and captured the MAC Northwest championship five times. The 1985–86 team set the school record at the time for wins in a season, finishing at 22-8 while advancing to the Division III quarterfinals behind the standout play of Don Harnum Jr. ’86.

In the 1990s, Susquehanna continued to qualify for the postseason tournament with six appearances under Marcinek. The program’s 19-7 record in 1993–94 has the eight-best winning percentage (.731) in program history. The 2014–15 squad finished with an identical record. The 2015–16 squad posted the most wins in a single season (24) and the second-best winning percentage (.828) after going 24-5. Josh Miller was honored at the end of the season as a First Team All-Region selection by the NABC and was selected as the City of Basketball Love (CoBL) Region Player of the Year. The 2016–17 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and was led by All-American Steven Weidlich. Weidlich was also the Landmark Conference Player of the Year, the Middle Athletic Region Player of the Year and was also an Allstate Good Works Award winner and a finalist for the coveted Jostens Player of the Year award. In 2002–03, Susquehanna basketball celebrated its 100th season and the Orange and Maroon returned to the top of the MAC Commonwealth, winning the league’s regular-season title for the first time since 1995–96. Marcinek, who surpassed 300 wins in 2010–11, earned his first conference Coach of the Year award in 2002–03 and repeated the feat in 2008–09, 2014–15 and again in 2015–16. He soared past the 400-career victory plateau in the middle of the 2016–17 season and now has 417 wins to his credit and 26 seasons with double-digit wins.

Athletic FacilitiesSusquehanna boasts one of the premier athletics programs in the Landmark Conference with 23 varsity sports teams.

While adhering to the philosophy that Susquehanna student-athletes are here first and foremost for a quality education, Susquehanna teams have still earned NCAA Division III national rankings in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, baseball, softball, track & field, men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse over recent years. Track & Field athletes also routinely achieve All-America status at their respec-tive national championships. Susquehanna teams won 18 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championships in men’s and women’s sports during the decade of the 1980s. They added 21 more in the 1990s and nine more this century, as well as one Liberty League title and an Empire 8 Athletic Conference championship. Susquehanna has claimed four (2009–10, 2011–12, 2013–14, 2015–16) Landmark Confer-ence Presidents’ Trophy honors since the conference was formed and began competition in 2007-08.

ATHLETICS FACILITIESOver the past several years, Susquehanna’s athletics facili-ties have evolved into the finest in Division III.

JAMES W. GARRETT SPORTS COMPLEXA popular hub for student activity, the facilities provide award-winning design, modern equipment and enhanced opportunities for collegiate and lifelong fitness. The complex includes a 51,000-square-foot field house, Chris Vialonga ’93 and Colleen Supinski ’96 Sports Performance Center, a 4,000-square foot Athletic Training room, Clyde H. Jacobs Fitness Center, Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium, a swimming pool, an indoor rowing training center, racquet-ball courts, the Douglas Arthur ’49 (football practice) Field and a six-court tennis court complex that is home to the

varsity tennis teams. Offices and meeting spaces, locker rooms and Clyde’s Café are also part of the complex. The complex is named in honor of James W. Garrett, Susque-hanna’s head football coach from 1960 to 1965. He also served as an assistant coach and scout during a more than 30-year career in the NFL.

AMOS ALONZO STAGG FIELD at DOUG ARTHUR STADIUMThe 3,500-seat lighted stadium boasts a state-of-the-art ProGrass playing surface — replaced in the summer of 2013 — and has retained the familiar Stagg Field designa-tion, while the installation of lights prior to the 2002 sea-son permitted teams to play on-campus night games for the first time in program history. A video display board on the west end of the stadium, replaced prior to the 2013-14 academic year, is a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that few Division II or III schools in the country can dupli-cate. The stadium is home to the football team as well as the outdoor track & field teams that host the annual Jim Taylor Invitational each spring.

SASSAFRAS FIELDSOpened in September 2004, Sassafras Fields consists of a lighted, ProGrass, multi-purpose field (resurfaced in 2015) for soccer, field hockey and lacrosse, and a separate softball field which recently underwent renovations adding new dugouts and a new scoreboard.

HAROLD BOLLINGER ’39 FIELDSDedicated in 2001, Harold Bollinger ’39 Field is the home of the 2016 Landmark Conference Champion River Hawks. The field complex includes pro-style dugouts (2016), state-of-the-art scoreboard (2016) and bleacher seating for nearly 500 fans.
