Did I miss anything? Please let me know by email. I plan to get a Gold Rush issue out by August 1, bring my attention to any omissions and I’ll either apologize profusely or include your information in the next issue.

Blank spaces: There are some pages that look like I’ve missed some-thing. But I believe I’ve covered everything.

Hyphenation: I know there are words that are hyphenated in very strange places. Some are fine, but some are just bizzare. If anyone knows how to fix this in MS Publisher text boxes, short of spacing them out, please enlighten me.

HELPING HANDS

ATTENTION MEMBERS

As you may be aware, the funds for HELPING HANDS were depleted in the past and we found it necessary to put the program on hold at the beginning of 2018. We continue to accept donations for Helping Hands to allow the fund to rebuild. All Helping Hands donations accepted since Sept. 2017 and beyond have and will be designated specifically for that fund and not used for other GWTA purposes. We will revisit the situation after Gold Rush in July 2018. Please send your Helping Hands donations to: GWTA PO Box 24390 Belleville, IL 62223 Thank you, Judy Schaefer GWTA Executive Director

From the Editor ... What a long Winter! Even for Tennessee! Now I’m on my front porch, putting together (finally!) the Touring News, enjoying the light breeze, the sound of my many wind chimes, and being outdoors! And, by the way, NOT AT WORK!!!! Yes, I’ve retired, and can now devote myself to writing, riding, and reading (my 3 Rs).

Hope you’re all excited about this year’s Gold Rush. We’re mixing things up a bit, as several of the articles in this Touring News issue will highlight. See what’s new with the Pride of Ownership com-petition and the Light Parade schedule. I’m so looking forward to seeing everyone there. Tony and I have a site reserved at the KOA in Bowling Green, very close to the host hotel.

Speaking of schedules, I must apologize for falling so far behind with the Touring News. While waiting for John Hunrath to re-turn online (which he now is .. Welcome Back, John!), my load at work doubled with the loss of 1/4 of our team, and my daughter-in-law’s catastrophic heel injury (shattered!) kept me away from the computer and emails. Sara is now on the mend and I took care of the work load by retiring!

Work was interfering with my rid-ing, writing, camping, crafting, and all that other stuff, anyway.

Mail Box

Let’s get that letters column going I mentioned awhile back. Would love to hear from you…

What better way to communicate with the entire organization than a letters column? We want to hear your comments, suggestions, gripes (but keep it nice). You might have an idea for a ride, a new Gold Rush activity, an interesting article about motorcycles, riding, etc. Make this magazine yours by letting us know what’s on your mind. Have a new member? Let’s celebrate with a mention in Touring News. 25th or 50th Anniversary? New baby? Suggestions for the members? And comments about the magazine, of course. Anything worth announc-ing is welcome. The possibilities are endless. The choice is yours. All it takes is an email to [email protected]

Be sure to read the articles submit-ted by our Chairman of the Board, Executive Director, Rider Educa-tion Director (he has, alas, resigned because of personal obligations), and this year’s Co-Family of the Year ambassador. Check out the open staff positions on page 20, and the open Board of Directors positions that Larry mentions in his letter.

I’m eagerly looking forward to see-ing all of you at Gold Rush for fun, riding, games, ice cream, conversa-tion, and, did I mention ice cream? The staff has something special cooked up, so don’t miss it!

See you real soon!

Marvin Young

October 25,1927-May 7, 2018 2018

As Region C Di rectors, we are sad to pass on the news that Marvin Young, from IL-Chapter A has passed away. Marvin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Cissna Park American Legion and Gold Wing Motorcycle Touring Association. Marvin was a life-long farmer and mechanic in the area and enjoyed traveling with his wife on their motorcy-cle in the lower 48 states as well as in Canada and Newfoundland

He, with Dorothy in a sidecar, attended so many rallies, many of you knew them well. He once gave me the ride of a lifetime, in that sidecar. My eyes were as wide as saucers, while he was grin-ning and laughing at me, the whole way. His jokes, stories, knowledge and wisdom, made him a man who was highly respected and will never be forgotten. He leaves us with only happy mem-ories.

Milton Grimes November, 2017

Milton “Mit” Grimes passed away in November, 2017. His beloved wife, Mary, has been gone for four years. Mit was both one of our most tenured chapter members, as well as our oldest chapter member. Mit was a very young octogenarian (he was 86) – and nev-er stopped riding his Goldwing. Mit and Mary made it to many local, state, regional and national events, every year. You may remember seeing them with their Eveready bunny ears – because they just kept on going. At one Goldrush, Mit quipped that while he may not have ever been the oldest GWTA member in attendance, he was excited to be ANY-WHERE that wasn’t a nursing home! One of the first stories that Mit told about their motor-cycle travels was one where he and Mary had shipped their Goldwing over to Europe. They traveled the backroads, hit top end speed on the Autobahn, and rarely looked at a map. They arrived in one village in the Alps toward the end of a day, and since they didn’t speak the language, made a sleep motion with their head tilted over on their hands. They got a room, but with all the noise that went on in the bedrooms that night, they were pretty sure it was a bordello… He would go riding with anyone, any time. Good luck trying to outrun him. He loved a fast, curvy road and two wheels. This is Mit ahead of Carol Brush at Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota.

Mit was an author, a musician, a CPA, and a good friend. We will miss him dearly. The members of Chapter A, Nebraska.

Rory Stephen Brem

April 6, 2018

On April 5,2018 Stephanie and Nick received the worst news expectant parents could hear. Your child no longer has a heart beat. Stepha-nie was admitted to the hospital and delivered their sweet, sweet angel, Baby Rory Stephen Brem at 7:28 am on Apri 6, 2018. He weighed 4.8 lbs and measured 17 inches long. He was surrounded by all of his family and so many friends. Lance was able to see him and give him a kiss. Stephanie expresses thanks to all who have already sent texts and calls and even saw them in the hospital.

Your kind words have been deeply appreciated. We will be having a brief memorial service at our church. Date is yet to be determined. At this time please keep my incredibly strong and amazing husband Nick, my sweet sweet Lil man Lance, and me in your prayers, and Mommas, hold your babies a little closer tonight.

With love, The Brem Family

Cameron Gillit

Novemeber 6, 1967 -- April 5, 2018

It is with a heavy and sad heart to let all of GWTA know that Cameron Gillit passed away on April 5, 2018. Cameron and her hus-band Steven Gillit served as Washington State Directors from 2010-2014 and again 2016-2017. She had been battling cancer for several years and succumbed to that dreadful disease. She was always positive, energetic and was one of the biggest supporters of GWTA. Her home was always open to us and made us feel like family. She will be truly missed.

From her loving husband Steve: "It is with bro-ken heart and shattered dreams that I notify everyone that Cameron Gillit passed peacefully in my arms this afternooon. ‘Think of me with love and laughter, wine and coffee, and when you do I will be with you.’ Cameron Gillit, 11/06/67 - 04/05/18. Rest in peace my lover of Butterflies and the color Purple!"

Hello GWTA!

Spring weather has finally arrived in the mid-west and it’s riding sea-son again! For those of you in more temperate climates…the rest of us are just a bit jealous at times, but not now. This time of year is beautiful: new growth, blooming flowers, everything looking fresh and green. The sun has come out again…so there’s no doubt chapter activities, planned rides, and spon-taneous gatherings are in full swing! Hope your ride calendar includes TA’s main event!

Only one month to go and it will be time for Gold Rush XXXI in Bowling Green, KY! Your Opera-tions Team held a meeting there the weekend of Apr. 27-28 to re-view the past several month’s of officer activities and make final plans for our annual rally. Mike & Carol Brush, GWTA Event Coordi-nators, are fine-tuning the sched-ule which will be released no later than one month before Gold Rush, so you have ample time to plan your week.

If you haven’t attended Gold Rush in a year or two, maybe more…we cordially invite you to join us this year and get reacquainted with old friends in GWTA. All you members in Region D, F, H, and J…the rally is an easy ride for you this year! The current registration form is included in this issue of Touring News for your convenience. You

may want to order your rally shirt real soon; the rally logo is pretty cool! Absolute deadline for shirt orders is June 15th, and at this time we do not plan to have extra shirts for sale at the rally. T-shirts are $15 ($2 extra for larger sizes) and will be a light gray color with the rally logo pressed on the front.

Bowling Green is a really charm-ing town with tons of great res-taurants and shops, and there are plenty of sight-seeing oppor-tunities surrounding the area with miles of curvy back-roads. The National Corvette Museum should be on your must-see list, and an hour’s ride to Mammoth Cave will not disappoint.

If you go looking for some tasty ice cream treats try out Bruster’s (not far from the Holiday Inn) or Chaney’s Dairy Barn (a short ride west of town).

The staff of our host hotel, the Holiday Inn-University Plaza, is ready to welcome you with open arms. We believe you’ll enjoy the hotel, attached convention cen-ter, and the many amenities they have to offer. Please mention Gold Wing Touring Association when you call for your reserva-tion: 270-745-0088. Don’t wait too long to make that call; the hotel will honor the rally rates of $99 for single/double occupancy or $119 for triple/quad until 5 p.m. on June 8th at which time the remaining rooms in our block will be released. As of this writing, approx. ¾ of our 75 room block has been reserved. The hotel will also provide two (2) meal vouchers per day for single/double occupancy and four (4) vouchers per day for

FROM WHERE I SIT… By Judy Schaefer, Executive Director

triple/quad occupancy.

If camping is more your style, we highly recommend the Bowling Green KOA which is 3.5 miles from the convention center and a short distance from the interstate. Nice shade trees and a pool will enhance your stay. Cabins may still be available for Gold Rush week, but you will want to reserve them soon. Contact the KOA di-rectly for reservations: 270-843-1919.

When packing for your trip, don’t forget to bring your chapter, state, and region banners to display during the rally. Deliver them to the Holiday Inn, Salon C, prior to 5 p.m. Sunday so we may have the hotel staff hang them before Mon-day’s opening ceremony

Some new and exciting activities are planned for the rally including a couple of instructional break-out sessions on Monday after-noon, an Escape Room, a ‘new’ game night, a Mystery Ride, and team games. The Judge will re-turn with a twist, and Michigan’s former Drill Team members will conduct a ‘Come Ride with Me’ and the Iron Eagle competition. We’ve also arranged for a Hospi-tality Room to be open all week for you to gather with friends, play games, or just relax for a bit. Don’t forget your wrapped Dirty Bingo prizes if you wish to partici-pate in the two sessions to be held during the week.

The Board Meeting will take place on Sunday, July 8th, in the hotel Salon B; the Welcome Dinner will be held in the convention center, Ballroom A, on Sunday evening; and Registration will open Mon-

Page 11: 2018 Touring News June · things up a bit, as several of the articles in this Touring News issue will highlight. See what’s new with the Pride of Ownership com-petition and the

 11

day morning in the Convention Center lobby just outside of Ball-room B where Opening Ceremony will take place. Please see the up-coming rally schedule for exact times.

If you pick up some road dust on your ride to or around Bowling Green, there will be a bike wash-ing station on the south side of the convention center. But, don’t worry if you are short on time for shining up the bike before the Pride of Ownership display…it’s going to be a ‘Bugs & Guts’ show this year. Certificates will be awarded at Closing Ceremonies on Thursday afternoon.

Bring your friends…what’s a Gold Rush without your closest TA friends! Bring a smile for all the new friends you’ll meet! Bring your enthusiasm for GWTA and help us make this one of the best Gold Rushes to re-member! ‘Get Your Motor Run-nin’…and we’ll see you in Bowl-ing Green, KY, on July 9-12, 2018!

MEMBERSHIP LISTS: At this writing, your Region, State, and Chapter Membership Lists are being formatted by volunteer extraordinaire Dave Caudle, Northern CA State Di-rector. Dave is proficient in Excel and is making the lists easy to update. We know you have waited a long time for the new lists, but they will be worth the wait! We appreciate your patience as we make im-provements in GWTA.

RENEWAL NOTICES: As of Jan. 1, 2018, we are sending renewal reminder emails if we have a valid email address for you. Please include your email address when you send in your renewal form or register for Gold Rush, etc. so we may up-date our list. Expiring mem-berships without a valid email will receive a notice via their chapter director.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS: We have made a couple changes to the membership cards which

will now be made from 65 lb. card stock. As of May 1: when you send your renewal to the central office, you will receive a new card in the mail from your Region Director. Members who renewed between Jan. 1 & Apr. 30, 2018, will be mailed cards from the central office during the months of May & June. If you renewed your membership in 2016 or 2017 for more than one year and desire a new card, please contact Judy at

[email protected] and you will be mailed one.

EXPIRED MEMBERSHIPS: If your membership lapsed, please contact Judy at 317.243.6822 as soon as possi-ble to continue your member-ship in good standing.

NEWS FROM REGIONS and CHAPTERS (Region and State Rallies are listed by date order in the Events Column, Page 3.)

Region F Any members in Region F, new or renewals, should pay $100.00 for two years and the Region will pay for a third year. By so doing, we hope to encourage longevity in the membership as well as a financial encourage-ment. So far we have about 10 renewals that have taken advantage of the plan. That puts a good amount in the National treasury so it's a good thing. Hello, all.

We are rapidly approaching Gold Rush XXXI in Bowl-ing Green, Kentucky, and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone there. If you haven’t already made plans to attend, please do get your registrations in. The staff has been hard at work planning fun times, games, riding, and new seminars. Reservation form and information is included with this edition of Touring News, as well as a preview of activi-ties. The KOA in Bowling Green takes reservations and is close to the host site. The board will once again host a Q & A for all members, and we sincerely urge everyone to attend.

Board of Directors Openings Board Representatives for Regions A, C, E, and J are up for election this year. Also, Regions B and H are currently filled by retired members who have retired from the positions filling in. The term for Region J has ended, but is currently being filled by Gary. A nomination or self-nomination form is included in this publication. Your region needs full representation.

The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Gold Wing Touring Association. Please give this role serious consideration, and feel free to email me with any questions you might have at [email protected]. I will be available at Gold Rush as well to field any questions you’d care to ask in person. This is a vital role, and open to all Gold Wing

owners with current membership in the applica-ble regions.

Kudos Hats off to our Executive Director Judy Schaefer for all of her hard work this year. She has moved the office from Indiana, works out of her home, has stored files, office equipment, and other items not necessary for the day-to-day manage-ment of the association’s business, thereby saving us a bit of money on rent and other expenses.

And thanks to the GWTA staff who have been dil-igent in their responsibilities. John Hunrath has finished moving and is back online to support the GWTA web site. Sarah Dumais has weathered some personal responsibilities, has retired, and can now devote more time to keeping Touring News current. Make an effort to send her news, information, photos, etc. for the publica-tion. Carol and Mike Brush have put in much effort to plan this year’s Gold Rush, all reviewed with Judy and her staff.

All suggestions and comments are welcome from all of our members. We want YOUR organization to be the best ever.

Until next time all, Y’all ride safe!

Rider Education Reminders from the desk of Jim Rogers

This month’s Safety Tip is How to deal with Tailgaters. On the roads today we are dealing with every-one in a hurry and what I refer to as the “Me First Syndrome”. They want to be in front of you and your safety doesn’t matter, you’re in their way. We’re just out enjoy-ing the day on the bike, the weath-er, and searching for the next ice cream stop or piece of pie or cake. Then you have that person who needs to be in front of you. Here are some suggestions from MSF to help give you a SAFE way out of the situation. (Reprinted from Motorcycle Safety Founda-tion, msf-usa.org).

MSF Safety Tip #66: Tailgaters

There is a right way and a wrong way to deal with tailgaters when riding your motorcycle.

First, make sure you're not tail-gating the vehicle in front of you, because if you are forced to make a too-quick stop due to your own lack of proper space cushion, your tailgater might crash into you.

If there's no one in front of you, you might be tempted to speed up. But this can be dangerous, as your tailgater may speed up with you and you may end up riding beyond your skill level.

Sometimes, flashing your brake light (without slowing down), waiting a few seconds, then flash-ing it again will send a caution-

ary message. If your tailgater doesn't slow down, you may be dealing with an aggressive driv-er, not an unaware driver. En-courage your tailgater to pass you, if conditions permit. Change lanes if you can; leave the road at the next safe oppor-tunity (intersection, parking lot, etc.) if you can't.

If there are no imminent oppor-tunities to leave the road, then be extra cautious, leave ample room in front so when you brake there is space for the tail-gater to brake also, glance at your rear-view mirrors more frequently, and plot escape paths to your left and right to avoid being trapped. Finally, you don’t want to be so distract-ed by a tailgater that your at-tention to the front is danger-ously reduced.

Use common sense when you find yourself in this situation and use the above suggestions. With everything going on out there on the roads today we don’t want to push our luck. There are no fender benders when we ride our bikes. Hope these tips will help in the future and I also hope you don’t have to use them, but have them ready when needed.

Until next month, ride safe and often, if you can, while I deal with PMS (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) in Michigan.

Jim Rogers

A. Selection Guidelines

The program will be open to all families in the U.S. & Canada except the executive director, state/provincial directors, re-gional directors, board mem-bers, or operations staff ap-pointed by the executive direc-tor, such as national safety di-rector or national education and retention director.

A family unit generally consists of two adults and any household children under the age of 18.

Family of the year participants must be members of GWTA in good standing.

The GWTA membership of a selected Family of the Year must not expire during their tenure and/or title period.

If a member should be holding a chapter, state/provincial, re-gional or national Family of the Year honor, and during their term be elected or appointed to an office above chapter director, they will not need to give up their Family of the Year status.

B. Selection Process

December/January: The chapter director conducts the Family of the Year appointing process for the coming year.

Nominations may be solicited at a meeting and families nominated from the floor, or the Chapter Director may ask for submissions in writing. The chapter may also use a se-lection committee. Once the chapter Family of the Year is selected, the chapter director works with the newly nomi-nated Family to prepare their biography (or resume), as well as preparing written justifica-tion for the chapter selection. This information is sent to the state/provincial director, sup-porting their candidate for state/provincial family of the year. (Must be in the state/provincial director’s office no later than January 31).

March/April: Each state/provincial director appoints a Family of the Year Selection Committee to review the chap-ter nominations to select their representative for the state/provincial family of the year. The selection for state/provincial family of the year is based on information con-tained in the biographies and justifications submitted by the chapter directors. Alternative-ly, the State/Provincial Direc-tor may elect to conduct inter-views of the chapter represent-atives, either via telephone or in person at a state event.

Once selected, the state/provincial director prepares a written justification supporting their candidate for regional family of the year. This justifi-cation along with the biography and justification from the chap-ter director is forwarded to the regional director (must be in the regional director’s office no later than April 30).

May/June: Each regional di-rector appoints a Family of the Year Selection Committee to review the state/provincial nominations to select their rep-resentative for regional family of the year. The selection is based on information con-tained in the biographies and justifications from the chapter director and the justification from the state/provincial direc-tor. Alternatively, the Regional Director may elect to conduct interviews of the state repre-sentatives, either via telephone or in person at a regional event. The regional director prepares a written justification support-ing their candidate for regional family of the year. This justifi-cation, along with the justifica-tion from the state/provincial director and the biography and justification from the chapter director, are forwarded to the executive director (MUST be in

the executive director’s office no later than June 30).

July: The executive director will appoint a Family of the Year Selection Committee to conduct interviews of the re-gional representatives on Monday morning prior to opening ceremonies at Gold Rush. The Selection Commit-tee will inform the executive director of their decision. The executive director makes the announcement for the Nation-al Family at opening ceremo-nies. All Regional representa-tives who are interested in be-ing considered for the National Family of the Year honor MUST be present to partici-pate in the interview process. If financial obligations are keeping a Regional representa-tive from attending Gold Rush, the Regional Director may consider covering some of their expenses at Gold Rush from the Regional treasury.

C. National Family of the Year recogni-tion and duties

The newly selected National Family is presented with sash-es at opening ceremonies dur-ing Gold Rush. During Gold Rush, the newly elected Family may be asked to assist in pass-ing out awards at assemblies, act as greeters at the registra-

tion area, hold a seminar promoting the Family of the Year program, and perform additional duties as the exec-utive director may suggest.

The National Family serves for one year, and are consid-ered to be members of the national staff. During their tenure, they will actively pro-mote GWTA ideals and serve as a goodwill ambassador at as many rallies and events as may be feasible for the Fami-ly. It is suggested that re-gions, states, and chapters provide complimentary reg-istration for the National Family at any GWTA event they attend, in recognition of their national honor.

The National Family of the Year shall have their next year’s registration for Gold Rush and their next year’s Welcome Dinner paid for by GWTA.

The National Family will re-ceive national recognition with their picture on the cov-er of Touring News. During their tenure as National Family, they will write a monthly article for Touring News.

The National Family will as-sist with the national selec-tion process at the next year’s Gold Rush for the next National Family of the Year.

Greetings to our GWTA Family!

We belong to a great group. That word “belong” is a pretty powerful one. When you be-long to something, life can take on new meaning. We are so very proud to belong to GWTA! Members of GWTA are the nic-est bunch of people you will ever meet. Always ready with a handshake (or better yet a big hug) and always up for an ad-venture!

There are actually some scien-tifically-proven benefits to be-longing to a group. Studies have been done and lots of data support the idea that groups provide great benefits. Here are just a couple of ideas that we came up with that we feel are valid reasons to belong to GWTA:

Friendship – Okay, so that is sort of a no-brainer, but one can never have enough friends! As a member of GWTA, we al-ready have something in com-mon – the motorcycle – a good basis for a friendship. We also have people that we can count on. If you need help with some-thing, your fellow members will be there for you in some

manner. Whether that is a helping hand, or just listen-ing. Their support is priceless.

Food – Yes, another no-brainer, but still worth men-tioning. When a group gath-ers for nourishment, whether a full meal or just an ice cream run, we share the expe-rience and the memories made. Those memories are the stuff life is made for and made of!

Fun – You know what they say, “The more, the merrier!” This is absolutely true of our group. Any time a few fellow GWTA members gather, chances are you can hear them carrying on way before you actually see them! So many times, we have left an event with sore guts and faces from laughing too much. There’s something so satisfy-ing about being able to share in that!

Freedom – As GWTA mem-bers, we all have the freedom to express our views, beliefs, and opinions. We may not al-ways agree on everything, but the fact that we have a plat-form to be heard says a lot about our group. It says we aren’t afraid to be a diverse group, and we have enough

respect for one another to be able to hear differing ideas.

Feelings – The deep feelings of love and appreciation for each other comes shining through eve-ry time we get together and every time we must part. Happy tears are not uncommon at Gold Rush when we reunite with a faraway friend that we may only see once a year. And those tears reappear when we must part at the end of the event.

We hope that these ideas resonate with you, and encourage you to participate as much as your schedule and budget will allow. Make those memories, share your ideas, and spread the word about what a great group we belong to!

Yours in Friendship,

Jim and Kris Rogers
