The Manchurian CandidateJohn Frankenheimer, 1962, USA, 126mins, Cert: 15A

After saving the lives of his platoon during the Korean War, Sergeant Raymond Shaw is hailed as a bona fide American hero. This couldn’t have come at a better time for his mother, hell-bent on boosting the career of his stepfather, a Senator with designs on the Presidency. Based on the memorably paranoid bestseller by Richard Condon, one of the greatest Cold War suspense thrillers, this political satire remains perfectly on target even half a century later.

Starring: Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, Angela Lansbury

Take Off Your CornflakesShow in a Bag Productions

A heartfelt comedy drama starring Pat Nolan (‘Fair City’) and Rosemary Henderson (‘Fair City’ and ‘Father Ted’), this tender love story tells of a fun-filled marriage that hits crisis when one of the couple develops Alzheimers. When we go out of our mind, where do we go? Full of tears, joy and some of the best ‘dad jokes’ you’ll hear - you will laugh and you may cry, but you will definitely discover the true meaning of love.

Maudie

Aisling Walsh, Ireland, Canada, 2016, 115mins, Cert 15A

Maud is a bright-eyed and determined young woman who, despite suffering from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, is desperate to live independently from her over-protective family and gain the freedom to paint the colourful art she passionately creates. On applying to become a housekeeper for reclusive fish peddler Everett, the two social misfits soon form a close bond. This gentle biopic from Irish filmmaker Aisling Walsh (Song for a Raggy Boy) is both an unlikely love story and an inspiring tale of the woman who became one of Canada’s most celebrated folk artists.

SHOUT! - The Mod MusicalVerdant Productions & Do R Die Productions

A nostalgic nod to London’s Swinging Sixties.

The musical follows five young female subscribers to a fictional magazine called Shout!, ‘the magazine for the modern woman’, as they come of age during the liberating 1960s that made England swing. From cover to cover, Shout! unfolds like a musical magazine and travels in time changing attitudes about women. Shout! and its all-female cast reflect that change through the unforgettable music of the era through the decade, chronicling the dawn of liberation of women. Just as Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Cilla Black and Lulu were independent women with major careers, women were redefining themselves in the face of changing attitudes about women. Shout! and its all-female cast reflect that change through the unforgettable music of the era.

Battle of the Sexes

Jonathon Dayton, 2017, USA, 121 mins, Cert: 12A

The 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs was a turning point in the politics of their game.

The film reminds us just how much blatant sexism pervaded the so - called sexual revolution. But it also shows the great strides made by trailblazers like King.

Henry, a once-rich playboy who has obliviously spent his entire inheritance, is desperate to marry into further financial support when he meets Henrietta, a shy, awkward, though independently wealthy botany professor. In an Irish reimagining of an American classic, Dorothy is a moody social-media-addled teen of 21st century Louth, transported to a strange land with no Google Map or Uber to save her.
