16TH ANNUAL

SATURDAY, AUG. 1811 a.m. - 6 p.m. | Playhouse Square

Explore Cleveland’s largest community arts and culture celebration.

EVERY DAY, thousands of down-town residents and office work-ers drive, walk, run and bike over a hidden gem nestled beneath Veter-ans Memorial Bridge. Just below this iconic structure rests a subway lev-el that for decades helped transport thousands of people from down-town to Ohio City. Its route allowed street cars and trolleys to enter at West 6th Street and Superior Avenue downtown and exit on West 25th Street and Detroit Avenue. This lev-el of the bridge was widely popular from its opening in 1918 until 1954, when the streetcar was no longer fa-vored, and buses were the answer to public transportation.

Sixty years later, the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works is shining a light on these his-toric routes, giving visitors a unique perspective of Downtown Cleveland. During SPARX City Hop, sneak a peek into the city’s past with self-

guided tours of the original streetcar station and tracks, as well as unique views of the Cuyahoga River, Lake Erie and Downtown Cleveland.

“So many new developments have taken place in downtown, and SPARX is a unique opportunity to explore the city with fresh eyes ev-ery year,” says Joe Marinucci, presi-dent and CEO of Downtown Cleve-land Alliance. “Boasting views of our city’s past, present and future, the Veterans Memorial Bridge can give you unparalleled views of our city for the day.”

Taking the Green Line during SPARX City Hop is a breeze. This stop on the tour reveals the architec-tural remains from when the subway level was originally built. The arch-es offer amazing views of the city and showcases the unique elegance upon which Cleveland was built and includes the lanes that were sealed from when it closed in the 1950s.

“The Veterans Memorial Bridge is one of the most unique spots in Cuyahoga County,” says County Ex-ecutive Armond Budish. “Every time the county provides a tour, we host thousands of enthusiastic residents out enjoying this terrific venue. It is truly our pleasure to host this event.”

Stop by the bridge at 1 p.m. dur-ing SPARX City Hop for the 100th anniversary celebration. Enjoy com-plimentary cupcakes, live music and a viewing of a public arts project led by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

SPARX CITY HOP is cel-ebrating 16 years of connect-ing people to art in Cleve-land neighborhoods. Explore Downtown Cleveland and its surrounding neighborhoods by taking a free trolley and hop-ping from art galleries and stu-dios to stages featuring live, lo-cal music. This year’s focus on local art and live music will keep you jumping from trolley to trolley all day long.

Start your day at the SPARX City Hop Main Hub in Down-town Cleveland, located under Playhouse Square’s GE Chan-delier. The Main Hub also serves as an information sta-tion, one of many music stages and destination for the Cleve-land Bazaar, showcasing more than 20 pop-up art retailers. Pick up a trolley at U.S. Bank Plaza to start your guided tour

of downtown and its surround-ing neighborhoods via the Red, Green or Blue trolley lines, making stops to explore local art, cultural institutions, pri-vately owned art studios and fun, local events.

Think you’ve seen it all? Not a chance. This year, SPARX City Hop also includes stops at Loftworks Gallery and Superi-or Hot Glass in Asia Town — attractions that ensure you’re experiencing the best of the city’s local art scene.

SPARX is made possible by the support of Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, which invests $15 million annually in organiza-tions that bring art and culture to life in area communities. With CAC’s support, SPARX City Hop has educated Cleve-landers about local art and cul-ture for 16 years.

New to SPARX in 2018

With CAC’s support, SPARX City Hop has educated Cleve-landers about local art and cul-ture for 16 years.

annual SPARX City Hop on Aug. 18.
