Rick AtkinsonRick Atkinson is a best-selling author, three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, and former Washington Post journalist. He is the author of the Liberation Trilogy, a narrative history of the liberation of Europe in World War II. The third volume of that series, The Guns at Last Light, quickly became a No. 1 New York Times best-seller in 2013 and was named one of Washington Post’s “Top 10 Books of 2013.” Of it, the paper said, “Atkinson weaves a multitude of tiny details into a tapestry of sublime prose.” Similarly, journalist George Will praised the book as “history written at the level of literature,” while David Ignatius said it “teaches the greatest lesson of all for the present, which is the need for patience and perseverance against obstacles.”

The first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943, received the Pulitzer Prize and was acclaimed by the Wall Street Journal as “the best World War II battle narrative since Cornelius Ryan’s classics The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far.” The second volume, The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944, drew praise from the New York Times as “a triumph of narrative history … elegantly written.” The final volume was received with incredible praise, with The Los Angeles Times calling it “Monumental…A masterpiece of deep reporting and powerful storytelling,” and the Dallas Morning News remarking that “Soon, if not already, Atkinson will show up on the list of giants.”

Atkinson is also the best-selling author of The Long Gray Line, a narrative saga about the West Point class of 1966, and Crusade, a history of the Persian Gulf War. He also wrote In the Company of Soldiers: A Chronicle of Combat, an account of his two months with General David H. Petraeus during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The New York Times Book Review called the book “the most intimate, vivid, and well-informed account yet published,” and Newsweek cited it as “one of the 10 best books of 2004.” Atkinson is also the lead essayist in Where Valor Rests: Arlington National Cemetery, which was published by National Geographic in 2007.

Atkinson’s many awards include the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for history; the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting; and the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for public service, awarded to the Washington Post for a series of investigative articles directed and edited by Atkinson on shootings by the District of Columbia police department. He is winner of the 1989 George Polk Award for national reporting, the 2003 Society for Military History Distinguished Book Award, the 2007 Gerald R. Ford Award for Distinguished Reporting on National Defense, the 2010 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing, the 2014 Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for lifetime achievement, and the 2015 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award. Atkinson has served as the Gen. Omar N. Bradley Chair of Strategic Leadership at the U.S. Army War College, where he remains an adjunct faculty member.

Atkinson served as a reporter, foreign correspondent, and senior editor for 25 years at the Washington Post. His most recent assignments were covering the 101st Airborne during the invasion of Iraq, and writing about roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007. Among other assignments, he served as the Post’s assistant managing editor for investigations as well as the paper’s Berlin bureau chief. In that post he covered not only Germany and NATO, but also spending considerable time in Somalia and Bosnia.

Born in Munich, Germany, Atkinson is the son of a U.S. Army officer and grew up on military posts. He holds a Master of Arts degree in English literature from the University of Chicago and an honorary doctorate from Norwich University.

Laura W. BushLaura Bush, former First Lady of the United States, is an advocate for literacy, education and women’s rights. After leaving the White House, President and Mrs. Bush founded the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas. The Center is home to the Bush Presidential Museum and Library and the George W. Bush Institute, a public policy center established to solve today’s most pressing challenging by developing leaders, advancing policy, and taking action.

As Chair of the Bush Institute’s Women’s Initiative, Mrs. Bush promotes access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity for women and girls around

Laura Bush has visited schools around the world and met with students in nations from Afghanistan to Zambia, with a particular focus on the education of girls and women. Mrs. Bush worked with the Library of Congress to create the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. in 2001. The National Book Festival continues to this day and annually attracts more than 120,000 Americans. Stephanie CutterA trusted advisor to America’s most powerful democratic leaders, Stephanie Cutter is the former deputy campaign manager for Obama 2012 and former White House deputy senior advisor to President Obama. Called “one of the most prominent voices in the [Democratic] party, and one of its top strategists and crisis managers” by POLITICO, her political and communications experience spans two decades in both the public and private sectors. The New York Times called her “the polished, sometimes scarily organized strategist who gets things done” who “has a long and favorable reputation with some of the most influential journalists and opinion makers in Washington.” GQ named her one of the “50 Most Powerful People in Washington.”

Revered for her gritty perseverance and straightforward approach to analyzing the difficult issues and political headlines of the day, Cutter is a frequent face on CNN as a political commentator and a former Crossfire co-host. From her unique vantage point, she offers an enlightening look at the current state of politics and shares an insider’s perspective on today’s headlines. Cutter is one of the foremost experts at weaving together political strategies to create a winning narrative with the Atlantic noting her “ability to drive home a message with force and clarity is prized.”

As deputy campaign manager for President Obama’s successful 2012 re-election campaign, she deployed ground-breaking techniques to reach the American people and steer the campaign to victory. Before joining the campaign, Cutter was a deputy senior adviser to President Obama, overseeing White House communications strategy. She crafted the confirmation strategy for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and helped create the First Lady’s successful Let’s Move! campaign. In 2009, she served as counselor to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, handling the strategy behind Obama’s Financial Stability Plan. Cutter was the chief spokesperson for the Obama-Biden transition team and served as Michelle Obama’s chief of staff for the 2008 campaign. From 2005–2006, She served as a senior strategist and advisor to Senators Harry Reid (then-minority leader), John Kerry, and Edward M. Kennedy. In this dual role, she crafted and managed a strategic messaging campaign that led to the Democratic takeover in the 2006 midterm elections. In fall of 2003, the John Kerry brought in Cutter to develop a communications plan to reposition him for victory in the Democratic primaries. After the campaign’s come-from-behind upset, she worked as communications director for his presidential bid. From 1994–2001, she also held several positions in the Clinton Administration including White House deputy communications director.

Mark McKinnonMark McKinnon is a political advisor, reform advocate, media columnist and television producer. He is the creator, executive producer and co-host of Showtime’s real-time documentary series of the 2016 election and the Trump presidency, The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth, the highest rated unscripted program ever on Showtime. He was the chief media advisor to five successful presidential primary and general election campaigns, and is co-founder of No Labels, an organization dedicated to bipartisanship, civil dialogue and political problem solving.

McKinnon has worked for many causes, companies and candidates, including former President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain, the late former Governor Ann Richards and Bono. He

serves on the boards of numerous organizations dedicated to reforming the influence of money in politics and is a member of the Television Academy and serves on the board of jurors for the Peabody Awards. In 2014, McKinnon launched Mayday PAC to force ethics reform in the United States Congress, along with Harvard law professor Larry Lessig and tech moguls Steve Wozniak, Peter Thiel and Reid Hoffman. McKinnon and Julian Castro, HUD secretary, served as co-chairs of Southerners for the Freedom to Marry before the historic Supreme Court ruling affirmed the right of all Americans to wed.

According to Broadcasting & Cable magazine, McKinnon is one of “a handful of players behind every big decision, consensus or roadblock in Washington...putting a unique, sometimes hidden stamp on the outcome of today’s debates.” Politics Daily writes, “He’s known for his originality in a field typified by copycats, a mellow personality in a world populated with high-strung brutes and ecumenical urges in a profession dominated by its unadulterated partisans.” “McKinnon is evidence that principled centrism is not an oxymoron,” wrote John Avalon in a Daily Beast column about the 25 Best Centrist Pundits. “McKinnon piloted John McCain’s 2008 primary campaign to victory. But he announced in advance that if Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination, he would ride off into the sunset rather than participate in the negative attacks he knew would be required. This is unheard of in the world of modern politics, where partisanship trumps principle as a matter of course.” Former President George W. Bush says of McKinnon, “I was really impressed by Mark’s creativity, and I was particularly impressed by his honesty.” Senator John McCain, in his typical straight-talk fashion, remarks, “He’s almost a genius.” And President Barack Obama calls McKinnon “a class act.”

For 20 years, he worked at Public Strategies, Inc., where he was an owner and vice chair. In 2010, Public Strategies merged with Hill+Knowlton Strategies, where he served as global vice chair and currently serves as an advisor to the firm. An award-winning communications strategist and media producer, McKinnon has been awarded more than 30 Pollie and Telly awards honoring the nation’s best political and public affairs advertising.

President Bush appointed McKinnon to serve as a governor of the Broadcasting Board of Governors. He serves on the board of the Austin Film Society, and he lectures frequently at universities, including the JFK School of Government at Harvard University and the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. McKinnon has been a regular columnist for The Daily Beast and The Daily Telegraph (U.K.) and a consultant to Aaron Sorkin’s HBO show The Newsroom and Netflix’s House of Cards.

McKinnon attended the University of Texas at Austin and served as editor of the award-winning university newspaper, The Daily Texan . He spent several years in Nashville working as a songwriter with Kris Kristofferson (and was wildly unsuccessful). McKinnon also is a two-time Ironman finisher. His quality of life is exceptionally enhanced by the enduring love and patience of his wife, Annie, whom he started dating before he had a driver’s license, and his daughters, Brita and Kendall.

U.S. Senator Tim ScottTim Scott is a US Senator representing the Great State of South Carolina. His story is one of hard work, education, success, and the American Dream.

Growing up poor in a single parent household in North Charleston, Tim watched his single mom work 16 hour days as a nurse’s assistant to keep him and his brother afloat.

As a freshman in high school, Tim nearly failed out, flunking four classes. That year though, he met a mentor named John Moniz who shared life-changing ideas with Tim. Through hard work, education, innovation, and with the

discipline his mother already gave him, he began the process of turning his life around.

The lessons gleaned from his mentor still guide the Senator today: you can think your way out of poverty, and financial independence is a stepping stone for success. Having a job is a good thing, but creating jobs is a great thing.

During his time in office, Senator Scott has supported multiple initiatives to ease the burden on small businesses, giving them the opportunity to prosper and create jobs. Notably among these was legislation to repeal the death tax, which unfairly punishes family owned small businesses.

Senator Scott has striven to honor his mentor’s memory and the sacrifices of his mother by achieving in his own life. His goal is simple: to positively affect the lives of a billion people. That path has taken him from building a successful small business of his own, to Charleston County Council, to the South Carolina State House, and the U.S. House of Representatives. In January 2013, Tim was sworn in as a United States Senator from South Carolina.

While at ABC, Walter oversaw the organization’s political coverage – including the daily political tip sheet The Note, guided the editorial content of all political news, and provided on air analysis. She co-hosted 2012 election night coverage for the Yahoo!-ABC News Network with Good Morning America weekend anchor Dan Harris. She and Harris also anchored the live-streamed coverage for the presidential and vice presidential debates. Before ABC, she was the editor-in-chief of The Hotline, Washington’s premier daily briefing on American politics. There she served as the political publication’s primary voice for three years, and she provided regular analysis of the national political environment in her weekly National Journal column, On the Trail.

Walter has provided election night coverage and analysis since 1998 and was a member of CNN’s Emmy-award winning election night team in 2006. She has also been a regular contributor to PBS’ NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and has provided political analysis on virtually every major political program on television.

Named one of the “Top 50 Journalists” by Washingtonian magazine, Walter was dubbed one of the most powerful people in politics in George magazine for her insights into the mechanics that make the political machine run. She also won the Washington Post’s Crystal Ball Award for her spot-on election predictions and has been frequently quoted as a congressional election expert in newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and the New York Times. Charlie Cook, editor and publisher of the Cook Political Report, said, “Today, her work is trusted and respected by Democrats and Republicans alike. She knows how to get beyond bluster and spin to unearth – and explain – what really matters in a political arena. And, she has a proven track record of success, which is essential for those whose jobs depend on accurate political forecasting.”

Walter graduated summa cum laude from Colby College and serves as a member of its Board of Trustees. She was also a fellow in the fall of 2013 at the University of Chicago’s institute of politics.
