Assembling Your Disaster/Earthquake Kit
By: Dr. Kenneth S. Cheng
As we continue to hear of the natural disasters that are occurring throughout the world, weshould also be reminded to be fully preparedfor any natural or man-made disaster in ourlocal area. The information in this article may be the most important information you readfor the rest of the year. That is because your completed earthquake kit will be the key toyou and your family’s survival of a disaster. In the past several months, there have beenseveral measurable earthquakes in our southern California region.Additionally, therehavebeenseverallargeearthquakesonthe“PacificRimofFire,”thezonewhereearthquakesandvolcaniceruptionsarecommon (and the zone inwhichwe live.) Recall from our previous articles thatteamsof scientists andother experts feel thata 7.8 magnitude earthquake (approximatelyeight timesstronger thantheHaitiearthquake)striking Southern California within our lifetime is inevitable.Whensuchaneventoccurs, wewilllikelybewithoutgas, waterandelectricity;andpublic assistancewill be slow or non-existent.The disaster/earthquake kit is the cornerstone to being prepared and self-sufficient. Putanother way; your earthquake kit is the key to yoursurvival. Implementyourkitnow, andyouwon’thave to thinkabout it for the restof thisyear.
Your disaster/earthquake kit should be able to sustain you and your family for a minimum of 3 days, although nearly all experts and relieforganizations advise preparing for 14 days. The author of this article, having worked innational disasters and having seen firsthand the responsetimeofaid,utilities,publicservice,etc.,stronglyadvisesthatyouprepareforaminimumof14days.Thisarticlewillprovideyouwiththebasics of assembling such a kit. It is not meant tobeexhaustivebutmoreapointofreferencefromwhichyoucantailortoyourspecificneeds.Additional references are also provided at the
end of this article.
Onequestion that is frequentlyasked is, “Whydo I need an earthquake kit? I already have everything I need in my home.” This may betruebutveryshort-sighted.Imagineeverythingthat is on a shelf or cabinet, and the contentsof every drawer are strewn on your floor. Then add3-6inchesofwaterfromthebrokenwatermain that you were able to turn off but only after thewaterfloodedyourbottomfloor.Lastly, addsome broken glass and some drywall from your collapsedceiling. This isnot the time tobeingcollectingyoursuppliesforsurvival.
Another frequent question is, “If it’s that bad,whydon’tIjustleave?”This,too,isshort-sighted:youareassuming thatnobridgeorunderpassis affected between your home and your destination, you are assuming that you haveenough fuel to get to your destination (remember thatwithnoelectricity, therewillbenoworkingfuelpumpsandevenifyoucangetfuel, you’renotgoingtobeusingyourcreditcard,)andyouare assuming that you have enough food and waterinyourcarforanytravelandunexpectedstops.Lastly,ifonly10%oftheresidentsOrangeCounty felt similarlyanddecided to leave, ourroadswouldbeingridlockfordays, anditislikelythatyouwillgonowherefast.Yourbestoptionmaybeto“shelter inplace,”andyouwillneeda disaster/earthquake kit to do so successfully.

WATER. You should store at least one gallon of water per person per day, more if elderly, ill, breastfeeding, or in warm environments.Water should be stored in original containers

Information on how to utilizeyourwaterheater’swater, aswellaswaterpurificationinstructions(usingwaterpurificationtabletsorunscentedbleach),canbe foundontheNellieGailwebsite,www.nelliegailranch.organdclicking“resources.”
FOOD. Store at least a three day supply (andpreferablyatwoweeksupply)ofnon-perishablefoods. Ideally, select foods that require norefrigeration, preparationorcookingandrequirelittle or no water. Also, select foods that younormally use at home so you can rotate this in andkeepthestoredfoodsfresh.
SHELTER.Ifyouareunabletoinhabityourhome, youwillneedaplace toshelter.ARV,suchasa motorhome or trailer will make an excellent place to shelter. For others, a tent or tarpwillprotectyoufromanyrainorwind, andprovideyou with shade when needed. Extra clothing can be items that you normally would have given to charity.
MEDICATIONS AND FIRST AID. Prescriptionmedications should be in their original container and enough for one month. You should also haveawritten list of themedication, includingdosage, instructionsand theRxnumber toaidin refills. Health insurance usually won’t allowyou to purchase an extra month’s worth ofmedication, butyourphysiciancanprovideyouwithanextraprescriptionthatyoucanpurchasewithoutgoingthroughinsurance, oryoucanaskyourphysicianifheorshehassamplesofyourmedication. Be sure to rotate your medications toavoidstoringexpiredmedications.
PETS. Pets oftenplay an important role in ourlivessobesuretoplanfortheiremergenciesaswell.Youshouldalsobepreparedtoevacuate
withyourpet, however, keepinmindthatmostpublic shelterswillnotallowyou tobringyourpet. As such make appropriate contingencyplans, possibly settingupa “buddy system”ofpetcarewithneighborswhoalsohavepets.
MISCELLANEOUS. Cash is important becausecredit card terminals and ATM machines will be non-functional when the electricity is out.Copiesofyour importantdocumentswillmakeiteasierforyoutofileinsuranceclaims, accessbankaccounts, etc.New flashlights thatutilizeLEDlightbulbsarefarsuperiorastheyuselesselectricityprolongingbatterylifearelessproneto burning out light bulbs and are generally brighter.Ifyouaregoingtopurchaseaflashlight,considerpurchasingtheLEDflashlights.
STORAGE AND LOCATION OF YOUR EARTHQUAKE KIT. The idea of an earthquake/disaster kit is to have all necessities in one location that is stored away from sources of heat and light. Good areas include the back corner of one’sgarageor inan infrequentlyusedcloset. The location should be on the bottom floor of multistory buildings and next to an exterior wall for easy access should there be a building collapse. Lastly, the items shouldbe stored inasturdycontainer.Themetal“contractor’sbox”found at construction job sites is an excellenttypeofcontainerforyourearthquakekit.
Again, thisarticleandtheaccompanyingsupplylistwillhelpyougetstartedonyourearthquakekit. It is recommended that you copy this listand use it as the foundation of your family’searthquake kit. Future articles will include work andcarpreparation, andwaterpurification.Youcan also find additional information on disaster preparationat:
