This year marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Sweden ever since concluding a Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation in 1868. In commemoration of this, Dr. Akito Arima, the president of the Haiku International Association (HIA), led a project of cultural exchange tour in Sweden from 24th to 30th of this June.

The 25 tour members of the project from Japan arrived at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in the evening of the 24th. It was the day after Midsummer in Sweden, which is the most important holiday in the Swedish calendar apart from Christmas. People seemed not to bathe the afterglow of the celebration, although we were caught in a traffic jam caused by people traveling back from the Midsummer festival.

Dr. Lars Vargö, the chairman of The Swedish Haiku Association and the former Swedish Ambassador to Japan, who had made the plan of this tour warmly welcomed us at the hotel in Stockholm.

While we were aware of “white nights”, there was a great difference between what we had heard and what we actually saw. The shades of eve came slowly and it made us free of guilt feeling toward going out on the town at night.

25th: All day in Uppsala. We visited the House and the Garden of Carl von Linné, one of the most world-renowned natural historian. We also visited Uppsala Cathedral and Uppsala University Library. Then we offered flowers to grave of Mr. Dag Hammarskjöld who was the second Secretary-General of the United Nations and unfortunately killed in an airplane crash.

26th: Haiku Symposium at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities. Starting with the greeting from H.E.Ambassador Jun Yamazaki, Dr. Lars Vargö hosted the symposium. The four presenters gave the keynote speeches and conducted open discussion and on the theme of “Haiku in the World Today”. The four were;

President of European Union, - Prof.Dr. W.F.Vande Walle, Specially appointed professor Research Unit of

Japanese Studies,and- Dr. Lars Vargö, the chairman of the Swedish Haiku AssociationDr. Arima described the history of poetry, specifying that poetry in the Western

countries had developed with long poems such as Iliad and Odyssey, however poetry in the Eastern countries had not. Then he mentioned the three characteristics of Haiku, which is familiar to the world nowadays; 1. Very short, 2. Mainly targeting on “nature” and 3. Everyone can enjoy composing a haiku. He concluded his presentation with saying that Haiku which lives in coexistence with nature will help environmental protection and establish the peace.

Dr. van Rompuy told that poetry is everlastingness and Haiku is a part of poet, quoting a passage from Endymion written by John Keats, an English Romantic poet, “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.” He explained that a haiku poet turns to be active by composing a haiku, even though he/she passively feels something from the nature and seasons. He emphasized that a haiku poet lives toward the ideal of truth, goodness and beauty and therefore haiku would be an antidote against excessive rationalism and egoism.

Dr. Vande Walle pointed out the necessity of the standard of haiku format by comparing the definition specified in the introduction of “ANTHOLGY OF INTERNATIONAL HAIKU POETS” published by HIA and that of the American Haiku Association. He also described the difference between Haiku and Senryu as “Serious” and “Humor”, introducing Issa as an example.

Dr. Vargö introduced William George Aston, a British consular official in Japan, who made a major contribution to the fledgling study of Japan's language and history (Japanology) in the nineteenth century. Then he explained the contribution of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, known also by the Japanese name “Koizumi Yakumo”and Yonejiro Noguchi, the first composer of haiku in English to tell the history of English haiku.

After the symposium, we hold an award ceremony of “The World Children's Haiku Contest in Sweden” sponsored by the JAL Foundation. Audience give a warm hand to the children who received award certificates and prizes with delight. In addition, film with haiku provided by Ms. Susanne Concha Emrich was screened during the celemony.

We enjoyed our lunch at the best scenic view restaurant in the Modern Museum and then we gathered again at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities to hold a

After the meeting, we visited Vasa Museum.27th: We visited Vallentuna, one of the most Viking dense areas in the world. At

first, we went the Church of Markim located on a hill and surrounded by wheat field, which was built in the 12th century. A woman in native dress served us a cup of elder flower tea with delicate sweet aroma. We enjoyed listening to the traditional Swedish music at the chapel. Mr.Pierre Nordahl recited haiku together with contrabass and lute reminiscent of a minstrel singing. Dr. Arima rode happily in a carriage to the next destination the Husby Museum with Ms.Parisa Liljestrand, the mayor of Vallentuna Municipality.

In the afternoon, we hold a symposium titling “What is Haiku” with the same presenters and chairperson. We discussed how we overcome the linguistic difference

to promote haiku to the world and how we deal in the difference of season sense (e.g. rain is chilly in December in the North, but not in the South).

28th: We spent the whole day at Stockholm, visiting the town hall, the Stockholm Public Library, the Nobel Museum and Gamla stan where is the old town of Stockholm. What was special about sightseeing was that we visited The Drottningholm Palace Theatre. Thanks to Dr. Lars Vargo, we felt that we slipped back in time to the 18th Century as a guide wearing an old costume showed us over the theatre including special places where are not normally opened to the public. We enjoyed the last night by having dinner at Gamla stan.

29th: We went back to Japan. Through this haiku interchange tour, I keenly felt that haiku can increase social circle over the border, and I realized again the importance of respecting circumstances and places of others.
