Chartered 9/27/73 Kirkland Sunriser: President-Dr. Cary Odegard currently has a clinic in Kirkland. https://www.odegardchiropractic.com/

Cary and his wife Teri have two adult daughters and had lived in Kirkland for 36 years before they moved to Gig Harbor in 2016. He remained active in the Kirkland Sunrisers club because it is part of his family and love for the community. He joined the Kirkland Kiwanis Sunrisers in 1990 after a Sunriser member came to his

chiropractic office and basically stated he had to join the club. There was no choice but to accept his offer. The club then had about 35 members strong and met every Thursday in Totem Lake. Their major fundraiser at that time was Christmas tree sales. For many years he was very active in all aspects of Sunriser activities – all service projects, fundraising and social gatherings. He had served as a board member for 14 years, twice as president (his 3rd term), and awarded Kiwanian of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and other service awards. Their major service project for over 15 years which they still do yearly has been the Books for Kids program, delivering books for every K-3 student of selected schools in the Lake Washington School district. They also volunteer with other clubs in local fundraising projects. In 2007, their club began a project of restoring and maintaining Kiwanis Park, a city park that had been neglected for several years. They also had a joint project with the city of Kirkland to purchase a new sign for Kiwanis park. Annually they ask for donations to purchase new plants for the park. Their members have been very active in work parties to restore the park. Currently their club has approximately 15 members and working toward increasing their membership to over 20. Report from your Ltg. Becky Wilder: THANK YOU! I would like to thank all who came and all the clubs who gave monetary gifts to our new chartered club. Providence Point Kiwanis lived up to their obligation as “Godfather,” they gave the biggest amount. Issaquah Valley Kiwanis had the most interesting gift, a bedpan with starter dollars. ISV actually use a bed pan for collecting “Happy Dollars.”

Newcastle Area Kiwanis chartered 11/16/2017, just had its Charter Celebration last February 21, 2018 At Aegis Gardens Newcastle Stan Head Cultural Center. Despite the rain and snow we had about 56 attendees at the

Newcastle Area Kiwanis Charter Celebration. We had 34 people from the 12 clubs of Division 28 that attended, 14 committed members but only 11 showed up, and 10 guests. Total committed number was 58 but only a total of 56 people showed up. Governor Bell was in attendance, too.

Note: To all Clubs that maintain a website, please update your information as when people search your clubs, it is not good to have old information. Thanks! Lieutenant Governor Club Visits Report: It was really fun to visit our twelve clubs more than twice as you experience different kinds of meetings-regular, board and business meetings and you get to know most of the members. You can also feel the camaraderie among the members who attend the meetings. Like any Kiwanis club, there are groups of leaders or a core group who are really making sure that the club will survive and continue to serve their community.

1. Chartered 11/1/50-The Bellevue Kiwanis Club is currently my home club and I have known Heaton since 2003, current president; Joseph Murashie, Dr. Jim Rosenwald and others. Their meetings at the Sheraton Bellevue Grille is every 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 6 pm. Their board meeting is every 1st Tuesday currently at Banner Bank. The last time I attended, the Snohomish Kiwanis club was interclubbing with them. They currently sponsor five (5) Key Clubs. I got involved with the Bellevue Club when we re-chartered Sammamish High Key Club and in order to be the official Kiwanis Advisor, I had to transfer my membership.

Unlike some Kiwanis clubs, the Bellevue Club is not well connected with the Bellevue city government but they do have a lot of service activities every week. Coming soon is their Casino night, Saturday, April 28, 2018-Doors at 6 pm. Play starts at 7 pm. Highland Community Center-14224 Bel-Red Road, Bellevue, WA 98007. For more info about what they do, go to their website: http://bellevuewakiwanis.portalbuzz.com

Current #of members 20 as listed with KI This February they lost one of their oldest and longest member, Chuck Simonson-he was not only the longest member in Bellevue but also one of the 3 longest member of PNW Kiwanis. Our prayers and condolence to Chuck’s family and his Kiwanis Bellevue family.

2. Chartered 8/15/29 Issaquah Kiwanis club is the oldest club in our Division and my former club for twelve years. This is where I learned all about Kiwanis, I was an active member doing all kinds of volunteer work from newsletter writing; Key Club advising, engaging Key Clubbers with our activities, presented the Youth Protection Guidelines and talked about how to relate with our Key Clubbers and inspiring Key Club students to go serve beyond their school by being candidates for higher office in their division or district. Worked with Key Club Ltg’s and Kiwanis Clubs to charter Builders and Key Clubs. They sponsor two Key Clubs and two Builders Clubs. Also worked as leasing agent; website, publicity, sending articles to the defunct Issaquah Press newspaper, engaged our K-Family to join the Salmon parade and enlisted the Key Clubber of the Year award with the Chamber of Commerce. I also have been a Board member, and received an Outstanding Kiwanian award.

My visits were just like it was before. They are a traditional club that sings “Hail to Kiwanis,” “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” “Oh Canada,” recite the Pledge, and give an invocation/inspiration and they schedule a speaker every meeting except for their business meetings. They meet regularly every Wednesday at noon and they have a buffet lunch for $11. They currently have 40 members and about twenty dedicated members who attend the meeting and they were former publishing editor, mayor, fire chief, city employees, school district employees and local business owners. They are well connected to the community. They lease their building from the city for $1 for as long as they take care of the place. This

4

is such a big advantage as they also rent this out to the community. Their big fund raisers are Salmon Days barbeque, Concert on the Greens and the BBB-Boots, Barrels and Brews coming up soon March 23. For more info go to their website- http://issaquahkiwanis.org/

3. Chartered 8/15/80-The Issaquah Valley Kiwanis Club is a club mostly of men. Most of them I met at the DCM at Gibson Hall. I have known Jim Seiber, current president for a long time since Liberty High Key Club used to help them on their barbeque burgers during Issaquah Salmon Days and they donate money to the school DCON or to the school Key Club scholarship fund.

They meet every Friday at IHOP in Issaquah at 7 am. The advantage of this meeting place is they have a private meeting room and IHOP opens at 6 am, so if you’re early, you can just go in and order your breakfast. They start their meeting with the pledge, song and invocation. Their meeting is very lively and you get to know most of the members. They use a bedpan for their Happy Dollars why they gave one to the Newcastle Area Kiwanis with money in it. They seldom have a speaker but the topics of what they discuss is very connected to what their service projects are in the community. Members are mostly retired people who worked in the Issaquah school district or other business in Issaquah. They don’t specifically have board meetings as in their Friday meetings, they discuss what is needed to be voted on and the members vote right there, so there is no delay in making club decisions. They’re a very cohesive group with 10 members attending their meetings out of their current 14. They have their own service projects but also help with other Kiwanis clubs for their service projects and fund raising.

4. Chartered 10/29/47-Kirkland Kiwanis Club is the home club of Matt Gregory, past Ltg. and elected Past Ltg. Big Foot chair and Club Counselor. Their current president is Dale Sahr who was featured in our October Newsletter. The Kirkland Kiwanis club has 85 members (6 addition from 79), the highest number of members in our Division. They are a traditional club, they pledge, sing and have an invocation/inspiration and they have a speaker for their meetings. They meet every Wednesday at lunch at the Market St. Restaurant in Kirkland and it is usually a full house with members. They sponsor four Key Clubs, one Builders Club and one aKtion Club. Their newsletter writers write with humor. Their biggest fund raiser is the Christmas tree lot sale and they just donated 10K to KCCP. To know more about what they do, please visit their website at http://www.kirkland.kiwanis.org/

5. Chartered 9/27/73-Kirkland Sunrisers Kiwanis Club meets currently at the Redmond Town Center

Original Pancake House every 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month. Cary Odegard, president is featured here as president. They currently have 14 members and yet they are very busy with their service projects and fund raisers in their community such as Kirkland Kiwanis Park restoration and maintenance project, Kiwanis Books program, Community Supper, Eastside Baby Corner, Kindering, Kiwanis Children Cancer Program at Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Eliminate Project, SIGN-Kiwanis International Fracture care project, Nightmare at Beaver Lake, Holiday Lights and their Key Club scholarships at the Tesla Stem High School.

6. Chartered 10/19/60-Mercer Island Kiwanis president Harry Dingwall was featured in our December

newsletter. They meet at Island House in Mercer Island every 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month. They have a traditional meeting and they invite speakers. With 14 members (added 2 from 12) they have about 4-6 members attend their meeting and they have several projects and fund raising like providing flags to businesses and their sale of fireworks. This year they are giving away $20K to their community and sponsored clubs. They have one Key Club, one Builders and one K-Kids. They support Matthew

5

House, Boy and Girls Club Positive Place, Eastside Baby Corner, Mercer Island Special Olympics, Mercer Island Youth and Family Services.

7. Chartered 11/5/64-Northshore Kiwanis Club has two presidents- They meet every Wednesday

morning at the Anderson School House McMenamins, Erma Olin room (Tavern), on Bothell Way NE at 7am. We also meet in the evenings, on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm. These meetings are held at The Den Coffee Shop at 10415 Beardslee Blvd, Bothell WA, 98011. Peg Dowd leads the 7 am meeting and Andrea McDaniel handles the 2nd Wednesday night meeting. I must say that the 7 am morning meeting has a bigger and nicer room at Mcmenamins. Besides, there is a waiting room with a fireplace, it is part of the Hotel. When I attended their 7 am meeting, I booked a room at the hotel and it was such a good decision as it rained hard that morning and the traffic was so bad even after the meeting. Northshore currently has 26 members and they have, one aKtion club, 3 Key Clubs and just recently their CKI folded this year. Their main fundraising project is selling fruit during the Christmas season. They support the food bank, senior center and other service projects in the community of Bothell, Kenmore and Woodinville area, for more information please visit their website http://northshorekiwanis.portalbuzz.com/

8. Chartered 1/24/86-Providence Point Kiwanis Club in Issaquah is lucky to have a club in this active

senior living community. They have their meetings at the Townhall center every 1st and 3rd Friday at noon. They are a traditional Kiwanis club and have speakers at their meetings. They have a captured community and currently have 30 members and about 10 members that attend their meetings. Their current president Janis Hong is recovering from health problems and VP-Elect Judy Wing is temporarily covering for her. They fund raise by knocking on doors in their community. They support the Issaquah Food and Clothing Food Bank, Providence Marianwood, Eastside Baby Corner, the Providence Point Medical Loan Closet and their Eastside Catholic Key Club, and two K-Kids. For more information, please go to their website http://providencepointkiwanis.org/

9. Chartered 7/11/06-Redmond Kiwanis club meets 7 am every Friday at the Family Pancake House in

Redmond (they open at 6 am). They are a traditional club and have speakers in their meeting. Their current president Byron Shutz was featured in our October newsletter and is a current Redmond Council member, they have about 3 of them in this club, and is very active in the community working with the city. Before that for seven (7) years, Redmond was down to 6-4 members but they did not give up their charter; currently they added 4 to their 29 so they have 33 members now. Their meeting is efficiently ran by Byron and surprisingly for a 7 am meeting, they have about 15 or more members attending at a given time. They have several service projects and they partner with other local and city events. http://www.redmondkiwaniswa.org/

10. Chartered 12/15/94-Sammamish Kiwanis club is a traditional Kiwanis club that sings, recite the pledge

and give invocation/inspiration and they have speakers in their meetings. They meet 1st Wednesday 7-8:30 pm at the BGC Sammamish Teen Center and 7 am, 2nd & 3rd Wednesday at the Sammamish Hills Lutheran church. They currently have 28 members adding 1 from their 27. They serve food for their morning and evening meeting with each member signing up for food assignment. Their current president Tom Vance was featured in our October newsletter and was past council member and mayor of Sammamish. They just finished their fundraising Jumpin Jive To Thrive. They also do the Ski Swap as their major fund raiser. They support Eastside Baby Corner and their sponsored Key Clubs. Their service projects include Adopt a Road Clean Up, Blood drives and other community projects in Sammamish. For more info, please visit their website- http://sammamishkiwanis.org/Default.aspx

6

11. Chartered 3/11/30-Snoqualmie Valley Kiwanis club meets 7 am at the Mt. Si Golf Course Restaurant.

It is beautiful out there with the view of Mt. Si and the Golf course. Currently, they have 20 members but only about 3 or 4 members attend their meetings. Marie Jackson is serving her 2nd term as president, she was featured in our December newsletter. Harold Erland is past Ltg. and current secretary of the club helps Marie run the morning meetings. Their major fundraising is selling fireworks. They support their Key Club, Eastside Baby Corner, Salvation Army and other local organizations in their community.
