Presidents Report
As Presidents we are very committed to our club and we do everything in our power to
keep the club running from a ‘bowls’ perspective to a high and active level, to ensure that
all our members enjoy their bowls and that there is fair as well as competitive element to
all games played. As a Bowls Committee our discussion and decisions are for the benefit of
the 450 members as well as the 120 individuals that like to use our facilities for roll-ups.
Whilst we consider the now and next season we have to consider the long term future of
the Club and our aim is to encourage members to join but also to keep the current
members that we have. In our last article we asked for numbers of teams to be increased
by splitting and forming new teams and we are very much keeping our fingers crossed for
when the details are published about teams wishing to play in the 2018/2019 season. You
will recall that in the 2016/2017 season we had 174 league teams and this season we have
dropped by 15 teams to 159. It has to be said that a significant part of this drop was due to
Rushcliffe players going back to their home venue and the loss through illness or poor
health to some of our members but nevertheless there was a drop. We cannot afford
another drop for 2018/2019. We are crossing our fingers so those of you that value the
club please cross your fingers with ours.
We have heard one or two people say that they only have 4/5 players for next season for
one reason or another. Please could we encourage these individuals to put in their team
applications with the names that they currently have because there will be the best part of
6 months to recruit additional team members. The reception team and the Bowls
Committee will do all they can to ensure that all teams have a reasonable number of squad
players.
You will all be aware that we are again hosting the Nationals this year from 7 – 16 April. We
have seen the preliminary programme and it is going to be a very full on programme. We
understand that this year we will be hosting the semi-finals of the Liberty Trophy Men’s
Inter County as well as the final. We would like as many club members to help with the
running of the Finals and in this respect a notice is now on the board in which you are able
to add your name to help in various roles. Please add your name. The Finals will be a
spectacle of good bowling and so if you are not helping please come up and enjoy the
bowling where there is free admission to members. If you are able to help refreshments
are provided.
The Lord Mayor of Nottingham Michael Edwards has accepted our invitation to open the
Finals on Saturday 7 April at 9.00am. We have also written to our three local Councillors
and invited them to the opening ceremony and to date Marcia Watson has accepted our
invitation and we are waiting to hear from Malcolm Wood and Wendy Smith.
We have also written to our local MP Alex Norris and although he is unable through diary
commitments to make the opening ceremony he was very keen to come to look at the
3
event at some stage and so we have agreed with his Private Office that he will be visiting
the Club and the Finals on Friday 13 April mid-morning. Very good news from a bowls and
NIBC/political situation.
A very big thank you to all club staff and members who were involved in the following
competitions:
British Isles Women’s Indoor Bowls Council Under 25 International Series matches played
on 10/11 February.
The National Indoor Visually Impaired Indoor Pairs Championships played on 17/18
February.
The organisers, competitors and supporters who attended both events were very
complementary about the hospitality that they were provided with by our club and as such
both events were a great success. A sincere very well done and thank you to all from us
both.
That is all for now. It is likely that once the league forms have been sorted out and we have
a direction as to what is happening next season that we will publish a supplementary
Newsletter. Watch this space!!!!

Please remember that old copies of the Year Book contain members
private numbers and should not be discarded carelessly, either
dispose of by shredding or return to the Club, this also applies to any
other document showing personal details.
This is an Urgent Message from the Bowls Manager
Some teams still have not submitted their entries
for the 2018 - 2019 season. Could you please get
your registration forms in ASAP even if you haven’t
yet completed your full squad of players, these
additional players can be added at a later date. It is important that all team
entry forms are submitted without delay as it will soon be time to get the
Year Books prepared for the printers and the fixtures have to be sorted out
prior to that. Your urgent attention would be very much appreciated.

The Opening Ceremony
On Saturday 10 February and Sunday 11 February our club hosted the BIWIBC U25 Ladies
International Series for the Acle Trophy.
Ladies’ President Shirley Ellis and Men’s President Philip Morley were at the opening
ceremony at which Shirley in a speech handed over our premises and facilities to the EIBA
organisers for the weekend.
Also at the opening ceremony were Skyla Sharpe - Saunders (10) and Sarah Kimber (12),
granddaughters of Pete Sharpe who led the Welsh and England teams respectively onto the
green with their countries banners. Abbie Hall (13) and Lauren Hall (10), granddaughters of
Philip and Chris Morley led onto the green the Scottish and British Lions teams respectively.
Well done to the girls for helping out and especially for the fact that they were asked to
wear their school uniforms on a Saturday!!
At the closing ceremony on the Sunday Shirley presented the Acle Trophy to the winning
team England and the EIBA returned the use of the premises back to NIBC.
The event was a great success with the Centre packed with supporters who provided a lot
of encouragement to the players. Great atmosphere.

Nottingham Indoor Bowls Centre hosted the Visually Impaired Bowls England (VIBE) National Indoor Pairs tournament for visually impaired bowlers from across England on 17-18 February 2018. Men’s President Philip Morley opened the competition and handed over our premises and facilities to the VIBE organisers for the weekend.
24 visually impaired bowlers, from across the country, descended on Nottingham IBC for an intensive weekend’s bowling. Pairs were split into two groups of six – with each pair playing all the other pairs in their group on Saturday and first thing on Sunday morning. The top four in each group went through to a seeded knock-out phase whilst the bottom two in each group contested the semi-finals and final of the ‘Plate’ competition.

Editors Note:
The printed version of the February Newsletter had some copies where the bottom line of some of
the pages was missing which meant that the page 6 joke was without the punch line, apologies for
that error, the joke is reprinted in full below. There were no problems with online copies.
Honeymoon Secret
On their honeymoon a husband confesses a secret to his new wife. "Darling, I'm a bowls fanatic,"
he says. "You'll never see me at the weekends and all our holidays will be at bowls tournaments."
"I've got a confession too," replies his new wife. "I'm a hooker." "That's ok," replies the husband.
"Just concentrate on your aiming point and take a bit more green."
Four bowlers were out on the Green practicing. As one of them was about to bowl, they saw a funeral precession go by.
Instead of bowling, the bowler removed his cap and placed it on his chest until the funeral had passed.
At this point, one of the others said, "You know, that was the most touching thing I've ever seen."
The bowler answers, "Well, I was married to her for 15 years. It was the least I could do!"

Sudoku
For those new to Sudoku the rules are quite simple
All you have to do is fill in the empty squares so that
each row, each column and each 3 x 3 block
contains all of the numbers 1 to 9. This means that
the total of each column, each row o& each block
must add up to 45.
This is a slightly more difficult puzzle, which has 38
of the 81 squares already filled in and should be
possible to complete in around fifteen minutes.

Car Park Security Survey
With the high costs of around £7000 for the winter bowls season we have to ask the
question:
Is it imperative that we keep paying for manned security of the car park?
Bearing in mind that there are outside security cameras and that Pinnacle Security have
offices within the property.
The Council of Management have asked that we seek the views and opinions of our
members as to whether we should continue stretching our budget by paying for this
service next year. (Please tick the appropriate box hand to reception).
Do we keep Manned Security Yes or Do we save money by saying No
