Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Love God—Grow in Faith—Serve Christ

Christian Community, Communication and Connection A blessed season of Lent to all reading the Spire! We are in the very special 40 day period leading to the Holy Day at the heart of the Christian Church: the day of resurrection, Easter Sunday. We began our Lenten journey with Ash Wednesday worship and again had the pleasure of being joined by members of St. John’s Evangelical Catholic Church and Father Rolo. As a nearly full sanctuary we prayed together, sang and listened and received the imposition of ashes. It was a special joy to celebrate our ecumenical oneness in Christ. MSUMC will continue the Lenten journey with special opportunities for study and reflection. Wednesday evenings at 6 pm our Bible Study group meets for prayer and discussion of Bishop Richard Wilke’s “He Set His Face to Jerusalem: A Lenten Study for Adults.” Thursday mornings at 9:30 am, our Book Club will read and discuss Japanese Christian Shusaku Endo’s “A Life of Jesus”. Sunday worship will focus on the spiritual disciplines of Jesus as he walked the last weeks of his earthly journey. Confirmation Class for our youth will continue throughout March, meeting each Sunday afternoon at 4:15. We continue to work on our communication and connection with one another at MSUMC. In April we will begin a series of small group Church Meetings (on Wednesday evening, during the Sunday school hour and on Sunday afternoons) to discuss our hopes and goals for Main UMC. Our goal is to offer an opportunity for each church members to share concerns, offer dreams and communicate “holy nudges” from the Lord. We will record ideas shared and collate them to be shared with the entire church body in a meeting over a fellowship meal. Our new church webpage (http://mainst-umc.org) continues to be developed and fine tuned. Soon we will have online giving available to those who prefer to pay their tithe or donate electronically. You will (soon!) have the option to listen to either the whole worship service or the sermon only, accessed easily on our webpage. Our Instant Church Directory https:www.instantchurchdirectory. com/ is up and running. Please consider sending your information to Richard Ammons/ Instant Church Directory if you have not done so already. We can also make printed copies of this new Directory if you would prefer a hard copy. Do you wonder who all our new members are? We have welcomed 26 new members since Easter of 2017, and we have ten more persons waiting to come into membership. We will soon have a bulletin board (downstairs in the Sunday School Parlor) of photos and names of our new people. Good stewardship of our finances and resources is always our goal. Please see the report from our Stewardship Drive and consider your role in all that we do in mission, proclamation and service at MSUMC. We are so grateful for each of you for your prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. Pastor Linda

Main Street Preschool Happenings….

Students will begin the month of April with a special visit from the Waynesboro Police Department. Many times, often unintentionally, parents convey a negative image of police officers to their children by threatening that the police will take them to jail if they misbehave. We want our students to know that police officers are wonderful community helpers!

Later in April, students will be visiting Buffalo Gap High School for Food for America. This is an educational program which focuses on agriculture literacy, sponsored by the BGHS FFA. Our students will have an opportunity to pet farm animals, watch sheep shearing demonstrations, and hold baby chicks. They can climb aboard a tractor, use an old-fashioned crank corn sheller, and taste

homemade ice cream. This is a trip that never disappoints! Thank you again for your continued prayers for our school and students. We are blessed to have such overwhelming support from the church family.

Blessings! Anne Ramsey, Director

On Wednesday, March 21st, the preschool will be hosting their annual Spring Dinner & Show. Dinner will begin at 5:00 pm. The menu includes baked spaghetti, salad, applesauce, garlic bread, and dessert. Our show will begin at 6:00 pm and will showcase Songs & Nursery Rhymes from Around the World. All proceeds from the evening will benefit our Preschool Scholarship Program. This year, we have 6 students attending MSP on scholarships. These students may not have had the opportunity to attend a Christian based preschool without the generosity of church members like you! If you would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, but are unable to attend the dinner, donations can be made in the Sunday offering or delivered to the church office. Please make checks payable to “Main Street United Methodist Church” and note “Preschool Scholarship Fund” in the memo. We hope to see you there!

The students at Main Street Preschool began celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday a little early this year with a field trip to the Waynesboro Public Library in February. Students toured the library, went on a scavenger hunt for various resources (newspapers, magazines, atlases, videos, cd’s, computers, etc.), attended Story Time, made a craft, and enjoyed a special snack. They learned about borrowing, caring for, and returning books. They also had an opportunity to use the automatic check out to borrow books to enjoy at the preschool.

The preschool will kick-off March, by participating in Read Across America. This is a national celebration that takes place on Dr. Seuss’ birthday to promote reading. The children will dress as their favorite book

characters, read several Dr. Seuss books, and enjoy eating green eggs and ham. Our children are eagerly awaiting the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day. The mischievous Leprechauns have been known to wreak havoc in the classrooms and I feel certain this year will be no exception.

March 22nd will be our preschool Easter Eggstravaganza. It will be a morning full of special crafts, games, activities, Easter egg hunts, and parties. What a wonderful way to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord! (Cont’d on Pg. 12)

Mission Trip to Paxot 2, Guatemala

March 6-12

A group of five Volunteers in Mission will be traveling to our Partner Church: Jesus El Buen Pastor Metodista, in the Mayan highlands of Guatemala. Our Mission Committee has named this long term partnership as one of our top priorities in outreach. We are committed to: supplying new shoes for school children, supplying rice and beans to the Methodist Church kitchen to feed their After School Program students (400 of them) and providing medicine for the small public health clinic in this village of 1500 K’iche Mayan people. Our group will: do home visits, talk with the directors and teachers of the Methodist After School Program, see the new feeding program in place, worship with our partner church on Friday afternoon (2+ hours!), visit the health clinic and fellowship with Pastor Tomas and Candelaria Riquiac. Our goal is to accompany our Guatemalan brother and

sisters in Christ, visit and know them, and learn together what more can be done in the village of Paxot 2, where the Methodist Church is at the very center of community life.

Note: on Sunday March 11, we have the pleasure of hearing guest preacher John Brenneke.

Pictorial Church Directory Online Now

Our new, on-line and app accessible (pictorial) directo-ry is up and running! It is called Instant Church Directo-ry and may be found at https:www. instantchurchdirecto-

ry.com/. If you have an email address registered with our church, all you need do is to create a free account at the site via "Church Member Sign In.” If problems

exist creating your account, please contact Richard Ammons ([email protected]), not the church office. Your account is secure; you will be able to view the directory for Main Street, etc., but not download or share the database for security reasons. We DO know the database is incomplete and with er-rors; the Directory allows multiple phone numbers/email addresses and such, that we do not have in our present church membership software. So sign up, take a look at the data for you/your family, and advise Rich-ard, by email, what you wish to update, correct, etc. Have a picture you want to post with your Directory info? Great! Send it to Richard digitally, or ask the church office to scan it for you and send to him. We hope you will enjoy our new, instantly updateable and 24/7 available directory!

The SPRC is welcoming resumes for the positions of part-time Youth Director, and part-time Children's Director. The positions currently are being advertised Church-wide until February 20, 2018. On February 21 we will begin to adver-tise on a district-wide level. If you wish to apply, please email your resume to Laurie Lafferty at [email protected]. Job descriptions are available from Laurie or the church office. Laurie Lafferty

A Note From Your New Lay Leaders Becky Grandle (11:00 am) and Stephanie Schaefer (8:30 am) would like to introduce themselves as your new Lay Leaders for 2018-2020. Lay Leaders are the eyes and ears of the congregation, your representatives who are voting members of Church Council, Staff Parish Relations, Finance, and Nominations and Lay Leadership Committees. Lay Leaders work with the pastor and church leaders to launch or strengthen ministries that build discipleship. They look for opportunities for ministry to advance the mission and ministry of the congre-gation in the community. They are to live Main Street’s mission—Love God, Grow in Faith, Serve Christ. That’s a big job description. How do we get started? We are planning a series of Congregational meetings to engage the membership (That’s YOU) in devel-oping a shared vision of Main Street ministry and mission. We hope you will come to one of these meetings and leave with a better understanding of where Main Street is at this moment and the feeling that your voice counts as we plan a shared vision of the future. Please keep an eye out for meeting dates as they are scheduled. Becky and Stephanie are hopeful you will contact them with your ideas and suggestions for Main Street’s ministry and mission for both inside our church

walls as well in the community. Becky can be reached at [email protected] or 540-294-0441 and Stephanie at [email protected] or 540-470-0483.

How Great Thou Art – an Easter Drama Presented by the Waynesboro Choral

Society This is the sixth time since 1994 that Main Street has opened its doors to the community allowing the Waynesboro Choral Society to bring witness to the resurrection through this Drama – with costuming, drama, powerful music and a full orchestra.

Performance dates are March 25, 30 & 31 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are free, night specific, and are available from Wright’s Hallmark and Waynesboro Garden Center. A Free Will offering will be gratefully accepted.

We have a need for approximately 15 artificial trees and bushes up to 6-7 feet tall and would be appreciative if you would be willing to lend us yours (these are not as readily available as a decade ago) we will be willing to ‘dust them off’ and take good care of them. Please give Don Coffey a call – 540-476-1500. The WCS has been blessed beyond measure of Main Street’s generosity for allowing us to use your facilities for almost forty years. Does the number 40 ring a bell in this Lenten season?
