RACING REVIEWBRITAIN

LAWMAN’S FOREST RANGER RAIDS CHESTER AND HUXLEY PRIZERun for the first time as a Gr.2, five colts and geldings lined up for the ten-furlong Huxley Stakes yesterday, the highest graded contest ever run at Chester.

With likely pace angle Frankuus (Frankel) unwilling to enter the stalls, it was last season’s Gr.2 winner Eminent (Frankel) who led, tracked by Forest Ranger (Lawman) and War Decree (War Front). Restrained in front by Oisin Murphy, the leader slowed the pace down from around the six pole. He was ridden along three out, but was soon back peddling. Meanwhile, Forest Ranger loomed on his outer and, having gone clear entering the home straight, he kept on gamely to record a length and a quarter win. War Decree ran on for second, two and a half lengths ahead of the late-finishing veteran Gabrial (Dark Angel). Eminent proved a bitter disappointment, trailing home last, beaten over 13 lengths by the winner.

A winner on each of this three seasons, Forest Ranger has now done something which he had not done previously and backed up a victory with another win. Gelded over the winter, the Yeguada de Milagro-bred bay landed the Gr.3 Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket last month, his first success in Stakes company.

A 26,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 purchase by Aidan O’Ryan and Richard Fahey, Forest Ranger is a half-brother to the Listed-placed Home Cummins (Rip Van Winkle), out of the French Listed scorer Alava (Anabaa).

STALLION NEWSBRITAIN

GLADYS A FIRST WINNER FOR SHADWELL’S MUKHADRAMNunnery Stud-based Mukhadram, the Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes-winning son of Shamardal, became the latest first season sire to

get off the mark, when his daughter Dame Gladys scored at Nottingham yesterday evening. Always to the fore, the Copgrove Hall Stud-bred bay was always to the fore and took the lead after passing the two pole. She was narrowly headed soon after, but battled back before holding on to score by a short head. Running in the colours of Guy Reed Racing, she hails from a fine Reed family, being out of a Dr Fong daughter of the Listed (then) Chester Cup winner Flossy (Efisio), who also scored in the November Handicap.

RACING PREVIEWNORTH AMERICA

HI HAPPY OUT TO LAND MAIDEN NORTH AMERICAN GR.1 IN MAN O’WAR Headlining the weekend’s Stateside action is the Gr.1 Man O’War Stakes over 11 furlongs on turf at Belmont Park today. A total of ten horses have been declared, where the Argentine-bred Hi Happy is likely to go off favourite. Winner of four Gr.1s in South America, including the Carlos Pellegrini, the six-year-old entire made it into the winner’s enclosure in North America last time at the sixth time of asking. The son of Pure Prize won the Gr.2 Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Second home was One Go All Go (Fairbanks), with last year’s Saratoga Gr.1 scorer Sadler’s Joy (Kitten’s Joy) and last season’s Gr.1 United Nations Stakes winner Bigger Picture (Badge Of Silver) in fourth and seventh respectively.

On Go All Go, who was second in the Gr.2 Mac Diarmida Stakes three weeks previous behind Sadler’s Joy, has since taken the Gr.3 Dixiana Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland, where Call Provision (Lemon Drop Kid) was fourth.

Mukhadram, who stands for a fee of £7,000, won five of his 16 starts, which, in addition to his top-level win, included the Gr.2 York Stakes and the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes. He was also placed four times in Gr.1s.

Bred by Wardall Bloodstock and raced by Hamdan Al Maktoum, Mukhadram is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Musidora Stakes-placed Woodland Aria (Singspiel), out of the once-raced Timber Country mare Magic Tree. She is a half-sister to the Classic scorer and sire Mastery (Sulamani) and the Gr.1 (then) Gran Criterium

Mukhadram (Shamardal), who stands at Nunnery Stud, had his first winner when Dame Gladys won at Nottingham yesterday.

last month in the Gr.3 Prix de Fontainebleau. The re-opposing Louis D’Or (Intello) was three and a half lengths back in third.

Winner over 1600m last season as a juvenile, Dice Roll (Showcasing) put up an impressive performance in the Gr.3 Prix Djebel, dropping down to 1400m at Deauville on his return and winning by five lengths from Magic Bibou (Panis), with Infernal Majesty (Siyouni) back in seventh.

Another trial winner and final local runner is Francesco Bere (Peer Gynt), winner of the Listed Prix Omnium II at Fontainebleau in late March from subsequent Gr.3 Prix de Guiche scorer Intellogent.

The sole Irish entry is last year’s European Champion Two-Year-Old U S Navy Flag from the Aidan O’Brien yard. The son of War Front won both the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes and Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes, but returned in a Listed at Leopardstown last month, where he was last of four, beaten 14 lengths. Better ground in Paris will suit much better.

The three final runners will have travelled from Newmarket. James Tate sends across the channel Hey Gaman (New Approach), a three-time winner last year, including of a Listed race and Gr.2 runner-up, who was third in the Gr.3 Greenham Stakes on his return. John Gosden saddles the final two runners, both of whom have yet to run in Stakes company. King’s Shield (Scat Daddy), last year’s Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up sale topper, won a conditions race on his return at Kempton Park, but was only third in the Esher Cup last time, while Il Primo Sole (Raven’s Pass), a winner in three starts last year, returned with a Kempton Park novice win in the middle of last month.

The 2016 winner, Sir Percy’s eight-year-old son Wake Forest, made his return last month from a near ten-month layoff in an allowance optional claimer at Aqueduct. The entire was second to Scholar Athlete (Einstein), with the former Dermot Weld-trained Postulation (Harlan’s Holiday) in third.

Money Multiplier (Lookin At Lucky) was runner-up to Wake Forest two years ago and was last seen running third in the Gr.1d His Highness the Emir’s Sword in Doha in February.

The final runner is Catcho En Die (Catcher In The Rye), a Gr.1 winner in his native Argentina, who scored in claiming company last month at Aqueduct, on his third North American start.

COLTS ALL SET FOR CLASSIC CLASH IN POULAINSThe Classics have returned home. After their two-year sojourn in Deauville, the Poules have been returned to Longchamp, where the fields will race for the first time since 1986 on the middle course, La Moyenne Piste.

The Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains is set to be the fourth contest on the card tomorrow, for which 11 colts have been declared to start. The hometeam challenge is strong. Wootton (Wootton Bassett) comes into this unbeaten in three starts and last season’s Listed scorer edged outlast season’s Gr.1 Jean-Luc Lagardere runner-up Olmedo (Declaration Of War) over course and distance

The Camacho filly Teppal, trained by David Simcock, has won both her starts, novice contests at Lingfield Park and Kempton Park last August/September, while Aidan O’Brien relies on Could It Be Love. The daughter of War Front, who had three quick runs last April and May, returned at Dundalk last month to win a maiden by over six lengths.

JAPAN – SUNDAY

STIRRING OUT TO REGAIN SOUL IN VICTORIA MILEA total of 18 fillies and mares will contest the Gr.1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo tomorrow. Soul Stirring, the first Gr.1 winner for Frankel when taking the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in 2016, followed up last year with victory in the Gr.1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks). However, her form since then has dipped and was last seen running tenth in the Gr.2 Hanshin Himba Stakes, where the slowly-run early part of the race was not to suit according to connections.

Last season’s winner Admire Lead (Stay Gold), fourth in the Hanshin Himba Stakes, is looking to become the third horse in a row to win successive versions of the race, following in the footsteps of Verxina and Straight Girl. The second and third home from last year, Denko Ange (Meisho Samson) and Jour Polaire (Deep Impact), return.

Other Gr.1 winners in the field are the 2015 Oka Sho (Japanese 1,000 Guineas) heroine Let’s Go Donki (King Kamehameha), last seen running second in a 1200m Gr.1, where Rieno Tesoro (Speightstown) was 14th, and last May’s NHK Mile Cup winner Aerolithe (Kurofune).

Lys Gracieux (Heart’s Cry), out of the demoted Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches scorer Liliside (American Post), has yet to score at the top level, but was a Gr.2 winner in February and was third in the Hanshin Himba Stakes.

Reine Minoru (Daiwa Major) won the Oka Sho last year, with Lys Gracieux in second and Soul Stiring in third. Back in 16th that day was Miss Panthee (Daiwa Major), who comes into this on the back of a four-time winning run, including of the Hanshin Himba Stakes last time out.

Others to return from the Hanshin Himba Stakes include the runner-up Red Avancer (Deep Impact), the eighth Eterna Minoru (Empire Maker), the ninth Rabbit Run (Tapit), the 12th One To One (Deep Impact) and the 13th Queen’s Milagro (Manhattan Cafe).

TOP-CLASS JUVENILES CLASH WITH TRIALS WINENRS IN POULICHESA larger field of 14 fillies will head to post 40 minutes later for the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, which appears to be a strong contest, with impressive trial winners taking on some of the best fillies from last season.

Godolphin’s homebred Musis Amica won the course and distance trial last month, adding to her sole victory as a two-year-old. The daughter of Dawn Approach won the Gr.3 Prix de la Grotte by a comfortable length and a quarter from Sea Prose (Lope De Vega). Wind Chimes (Mastercraftsman) was back in fifth, beaten three lengths, while a further four and a half lengths back in sixth was Mission Impassible (Galileo). Both of them were Listed scorers as juveniles last term.

A few days earlier at the Deauville trial, the Gr.3 Prix Imprudence was taken by Coeur De Beaute (Dabirsim), who has since been purchased by Teruya Yoshida. Second home, beaten a half-length, was last seasons Gr.3 Prix du Bois heroine Zonza (Alex The Winner). The fourth home at the Normandy venue Moisson Precoce (Lawman) will re-oppose.

Barkaa (Siyouni), who was recently purchased by Peter Brandt’s White Birch Farm and Joseph Allen, raced four times on the all-weather over the winter and won a Listed race at Cagnes-sur-Mer. On her turf debut on the re-opening day of Longchamp she ran out the highly impressive four-length winner of the Gr.3 Prix Vanteaux.

The Sageburg filly Red Line, winner of the Listed Prix FBA – Aymaeri de Mauleon at Toulouse two weeks ago, has raced almost exclusively in the provinces, but did score at Masions-Laffitte on her sole run at a Parisian track last September.

The remaining French-trained runner is Polydream. The daughter of Oasis Dream has not run this year, but was well thought of as a two-year-old. Winner of her first two races, including the Gr.3 Prix de Calvados, she was runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac.

The Marco Botti-trained Capla Temptress is the sole top-level winner in the field. The daughter of Lope De Vega, who is making her seasonal return, won the Gr.1 Natalma Stakes at Woodbine last September, but was last seen running seventh in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf.

Of the three remaining visitors, only Karl Burke’s Ellthea (Kodiac) has experience at Stakes level. Following her ninth to Polydream at Deauville last August, she won a valuable Doncaster nursery followed by the Gr.3 C L & M F Weld Stakes at the Curragh. She then ran fifth in the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile.

LAWMANFOREST RANGER remains unbeaten this season with an easy win in the Group 2 Huxley Stakes.

Next stop is the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes.

THIS WEEK’S HEADLINES

REPUBBLICA WIDE OPEN AFTER ANDA DEFECTIONThe Gr.2 Premio Presidente della Repubblica lost its favourite Anda Muchacho earlier this week. The winner of the Gr.2 Premio Roma and Gr.3 Premio Parioli last season was not declared yesterday due to a stone bruise and will be trained for the second half of the season. Scuderia Incolinx will be represented by the veteran Greg Pass (Raven’s Pass) in a race which has provided the pink and green silks with three wins. Selmis won the Presidente in 2009, while the sire Altieri landed a back-to-back victories in 2004 and 2005.

That double was also the last one for the race as a Gr.1, which was downgraded in 2016 due to low ratings. Time To Choose (Manduro), the 2017 winner, bids for a second success and he has proved that his game win by a neck from Greg Pass was not a fluke. He landed the Gr.3 Premio Ribot in the autumn and confirmed his supremacy over Greg Pass on his comeback, scoring easily in the Listed Premio Natale di Roma. Dario Vargiu, the retained jockey of Scuderia Effevi, had no doubts in picking Time To Choose, leaving the second Effevi runner Together Again (Pivotal) to his fellow Silvano Mulas.

The German runner Diplomat (Teofilo) is also bidding for a double, but is winless in 16 starts since his upset victory in the 2016 Presidente della Repubblica. The main danger for the local team comes from France. Royal Julius (Royal Applause) was beaten just a short head by Time To Choose in the Premio Ribot last year. The five-year-old, trained by Jerome Reynier, has had this race as his main target for a while and returned a career best performance when second behind Air Pilot in the Gr.2 Prix d’Harcourt on ParisLongchamp’s opening day. The step down in trip from 2000m to 1800m could help him and some rain will be welcomed by French connections, who have called up the evergreen rider Gerald Mosse.

Presley (Gladiatorus) was the most improved horse in Italy during the 2017 season. He scored six consecutive wins by an aggregate margin of 18 lengths and ran a brave race when third in the Gr.2 Premio Roma, behind Anda Muchacho and the Gr.2 Derby Italiano winner Mac Mahon. He won the Listed Premio Regione Toscana easily on his comeback. The four-year-old Law Power (Lawman) is making his first start at Group level and he deserves that, following his impressive three-length win in the Listed Premio Circo Massimo Tattersalls.

Sunday’s racecard at Capannelle also includes the Listed Premio Tadolina for fillies and mares and some well contested and valuable handicaps. One of them, the Premio WWF, is in the memory of Daniele Porcu, the Italian jockey who prematurely died last winter.

SAN SIRO HOSTS MAJOR NATIONAL HUNT MEETING TOMORROWSan Siro is hosting its big National Hunt meeting tomorrow, with the Gr.1 Grande Steeple Chase di Milano over 5000m and the Gr.2 Corsa Siepi dei 4 Anni, a 3600m hurdle for four-year-olds as highlights. Scuderia Aichner, which won the Grande Steeple Chase last year with Broughton (Teofilo), runs two other horses, as well as the defending champion. Broughton, who was third in the Gr.1 Gran Premio di Merano after his success at San Siro, ran a disappointing race on his comeback a month ago. It was too bad to be true but Josef Vana jr has left him to his fellow Czech rider Jan Faltejsek and has picked the ride of Martinstar (Martaline), one of the two other Aichner recruits. The six-year-old was picked up for €24,000 following a win at Auteuil in November. He moved to Josef Vana in Czech Repubblic and won well on his Italian debut in the Premio Durini, the traditional prep race over 4000m. He jumped with gusto, including the oxer, the most demanding jump. The mare Secret Sinner (Lawman) is not in the same class as the other Aichner horses. Trainer Josef Vana also saddles A Pigalle (Discover D’Auteuil), a reliable chaser.

The main danger for the Vana quartet is Delight My Fire (Way Of Light), who ran third in the Grande Steeple Chase di Milano last year and ran a blinder when third in the famous Listed Velka Pardubicka.

Paolo Favero, the former champion trainer, saddles Recently Acquire (Beat Hollow), the 2017 runner-up who coasted home last time. Ilaria Saggiomo has a couple of French-breds, topped by Axel Lauteix (Panoramic), who has a stamina edge over El Calife (Califet), a recent winner.

The Corsa Siepi Dei 4 Anni has attracted a tiny field of five but the race is a mouthwatering rematch of the first two in the Gr.2 Premio Giulio Berlingieri, the Czech-trained Arkalon (Tiger Groom) and the homeboy Live Your Life (Turati). Arkalon posted a five-length win in the first round, but the poor Live Your Life faced an unfair four-kilo penalty. This time they will lock horns at level weights and Live Your Life has the edge of a winning run under his belt. Vermithor (Big Bad Bob), much improved over the winter, won the Gr.2 Criterium d’Inverno at Pisa but was beaten fair and square by Live Your Life last time.

Letter fromAmerica by JOHN P. SPARKMAN

Then the rains cameWe knew our fate in the 2018 Gr.1 Kentucky Derby at the

post position draw on the Wednesday before the race. Our national horse race is unique among American

horse races in several ways, most notably the size of the field. Several of Britain’s big handicaps, as well as the Gr.1 Derby at Epsom routinely attract fields of 20 horses or more, but, because of the more compact layouts of most American racecourses, essentially all the rest of our races are restricted to, at most, 14-horse fields, the size of our standard starting gate.

The rules for the Kentucky Derby, though, set the maximum field size at 20, with preference assigned according to a points system earned through designated races. Every year within recent memory more than 20 horses are entered, though sometimes late injuries have resulted in fields of only 18 or 19 horses.

Early pace from the gate is consistently faster in American dirt races than anywhere else in the world, and the 20-horse field for the Kentucky Derby puts a premium on the ability to get out of the gate quickly and run the first quarter mile in between 22 and 23 seconds. Vino Rosso is simply not that kind of horse. He gets out of the gate quickly enough, but he needs a bit of time to get organised, and he is not a horse that is going to outrun the speed horses to the first turn. Thus, when Vino Rosso drew post 18, we knew he had little chance to win.

The further out you are in the gate the higher the premium on the ability to run a fast first quarter-mile, since simple geometry dictates that the path from the outside of the gate to the inside rail at the first turn a little over a quarter-mile away is longer than the path from inside posts. What tends to happen in the Derby with horses like Vino Rosso is that they end up much further behind the leaders than they normally would be. As the horses approach the first turn, they are often stacked five or six deep in two forward flights, and all the jockeys make a desperate attempt to get closer to the rail, and the field suddenly spreads out linearly as riders are forced to slow their horses in order to drop over behind one they can’t beat to the rail. Suddenly a horse that was six lengths behind the leaders is 12 or 15 behind.

Still we were hopeful that Vino Rosso might be able to rally late and make the frame as the horses who had committed to the mad dash to the first turn tired.

Then the rains came. It would have been a miserable day for both horses and people

at any racetrack in the world under the conditions that developed in Louisville last Saturday, but the task facing horses that run from behind the leaders was truly appalling. The normal gritty kickback that often intimidates European horses facing it for the first time turned into a silicon infused mist that they were forced to breathe, in addition to blinding both the horses and their riders.

Poor Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy), who was without any doubt at all the best European-trained horse ever to run in the Kentucky Derby, was completely overwhelmed by the conditions. Never before required to break from the gate with the alacrity that is second nature to American-trained horses, he suffered the additional indignity of getting soundly bumped in his first stride, and then again heading into the first turn. Ryan Moore, nevertheless somehow achieved an otherwise promising position in midfield, but you could see midway down the back straight that he was working far too hard to maintain that position, much less make any ground, and Moore rightly accepted the situation.

Our poor Vino Rosso broke alertly enough but was all but last by the time he reached the first turn and showed no inclination to improve that position until John Velazquez finally worked him to the middle of the track off the home turn. To his credit, once clear of all the flying sand, he put in his best work in the last two furlongs and was one of the few horses making ground at the end. You might note that he is sure to stay the 12 furlongs of the Gr.1 Belmont Stakes, while Justify (Scat Daddy) is not.

That said, Justify is clearly a remarkable colt. Eleven years ago Vino Rosso’s sire Curlin, arrived at the Derby with a resume very similar to Justify’s, but he was not quite ready to win, rallying late to finish third. Curlin, of course, went on to earn two Horse of the Year titles. Justify may be just that good.
