Dear Members and Friends of the Clarendon Historical Society,

As you know, CHS has partnered with the Cobblestone Society and Museum in the past. They have the best museum in Orleans County! But, they want to make

it even better and here is an easy way for you to help. Place your vote(s) to help the Cobblestone Museum become the site of the upcoming Creativity Incuba-tor event. You can have one vote from each of your devices: if you have a smart phone, a laptop and a tablet you can vote three times! The competition is stiff -- please help them out!

Thank you!

Dear Friend of CHS ,Please join us on Wednesday,

April 18, 2017 at 7:00 PM when Matthew Ballard, Orleans County Historian, will present Stories that Kill!, sharing the stories of several local criminals from bootleggers and thieves to killers and perhaps a few cases of mistaken wrongdoing. From the infamous murders of Alice Wilson and Emma Hunt to the embezzlement case of Albert S. Warner, Orleans County’s history is filled with shocking instances of crime and wrongdoing!

Not only is Matt Ballard the Historian for Orleans County, he now resides in our own Clarendon! A local native, Matthew graduated from Albion High School in 2006. He enrolled at SUNY Brockport soon after. Focusing his studies in Amer-ican History during the era of National Expansion and Reform (1815-1880), he has studied a broad range of local sub-jects including Cobblestone Masonry and Polish Immigration; completing his B.S. in History in 2010. In 2012, he earned his Master of Library Studies (M.L.S.) from the University at Buffalo where he studied academic librarianship and special collections management.

He serves as a member of the Preser-vation Committee with the Western New York Library Resources Council and is a board member of the Western New York Association of Historical Agen-cies. He also hosts the Albion Polonia

website, which serves as a historical and genealogical resource for area research-ers interested in the Polish communities of Albion and Medina.

Additionally, the Clarendon Histori-cal Society has some exciting plans for

2018 and we hope to see you at all our programs! Here is what is in the plan-ning stage:

Dear CHS Friend,Please join us on Wednesday, May

16, 2017 at 7:00 PM when Aaron Delehanty will speak of his work Restoring Dioramas at RMSC and Chicago Field Museum. His current work at the Rochester Museum and Science Center includes the 1838 in Rochester diorama. At the Field Museum in Chicago he built a life-sized habitat diorama using Carl Akeley’s striped hyena’s taxidermy. Carl Akeley, born in Clarendon, is credited with inventing the habitat diorama, showing animals ac-curately in natural positions in settings that replicate their natural environ-ment. Mr. Delehanty says that in many ways his career has followed in Akeley’s footsteps.

Aaron Delehanty is an artist and painter. He is the staff artist at RMSC where he builds dioramas, makes hyper realistic replications of artifacts, paints murals and creates all kinds of convinc-ingly realistic landforms for the muse-ums exhibits. Before coming to Roch-ester he held the same position at the Field Museum in Chicago. He also runs a small fabrication studio and exhibition space in Spencerport called Loud Cow. He is a graduate from the Master’s pro-gram at the San Francisco Art Institute, the bachelor’s program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as a history degree from Ohio State

The program will take place at the Clarendon Historical Society which is

located at 16426 Fourth Section Road, Holley, NY at the intersection of Route 31A and Church Street in Clarendon. The presentations are free and open to the public, so bring a friend! Light refresh-ments will be served.

Joanne Frenchwill present

June 6, 2018 11:43:33 AM EDT[email]

Dear CHS Friend,Please join us on Wednesday, June

20 at 7:00 PM when Joanne French will present Two Remarkable Wom-en of Rochester: Matilda Harper and Kate Gleason.

Martha Matilda Harper, a domestic servant, developed a business model that would enable women to achieve financial independence. She opened the first public hair salon in the region and became one of the first businesspeople in America to start franchising, allowing franchisees to open salons under the Harper name. Each franchise was run by a woman.

Her own floor-length hair served as an effective marketing tool and appeared in many advertisements for her products. Many of her innovations, including the Harper Method, underlie the modern con-cept of the hair salon. In 2003, Harper was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame for her achievements in business

Kate Gleason, the first woman to attend The College of Engineering at Cornell, brought innovation and interna-tional sales to Gleason Works. Known for her engineering prowess, she developed a method of pouring concrete to build houses and oversaw the financing and construction of several factories. She was the first woman elected to full member-ship in the American Society of Mechani-cal Engineers. In addition, she was an astute business woman, a humanitarian, philanthropist and suffragist. The Kate Gleason College of Engineering at RIT is named in her honor, and Kate Gleason Hall is an RIT residence hall.

Joanne French lives with her family in Spencerport. She enjoys being an ac-

tive member of the community, having volunteered extensively at the Spencerport Central School, the Susan B. Anthony House and Sojourner House. She is cur-rently the Library Store Coordinator at the Rundell Library in Rochester.

The program will take place at the Clarendon Historical Society which is located at 16426 Fourth Section Road, Holley, NY at the intersection of Route 31A and Church Street in Clarendon. The presentations are free and open to the

public, so bring a friend! Light refresh-ments will be served.
