Term 4 Week 9 Date: 7th December 2017

“Our School...Your Children...Their Future”

Dear Parents and Carers,

Mainstream Classes 2018 – there will be a change to the structure of classes for 2018. All classes will be Stage based, that is,

Early Stage One (Kindergarten) three mixed ability classes

Stage One (Years One and Two) six mixed ability classes

Stage Two (Years Three and Four) five mixed ability classes

Stage Three (Years Five and Six) five mixed ability classes

Some of the advantages of this model include: smaller class sizes, students learn at Stage level outcomes rather than Grade levels which makes learning more individualised, composite classes across the whole school ensure equity of learning groups, teachers work collaboratively to meet Stage outcomes. Research predominantly conducted in primary schools suggests that there is no discernible difference between composite or straight grade classrooms in terms of academic performance. However, benefits to a child's independence, responsibility, and study habits have been highlighted. As an example, younger children within a composite grade aspire to emulate older children in their work and in turn the older students provide leadership and mentoring opportunities that develop positive self-esteem. It can be said that composite classrooms are more flexible; allow children to work at their own pace; offer a wider range of friendship opportunities; and encourages more co-operation, and tolerance.

Centre Stage – Congratulations to our marvellous students on two outstanding performances this week, our concert demonstrated talent, co-operation and persistence. A big thank you to Mrs Cheryl Owens for her co-ordination of a dedicated and professional team of teachers and thanks too to Jayne Evans for her expertise.
